Opis:
The decision about emigration for economic reasons, including emigration to Ireland, after Poland joining the European Union, has been the object of research interests of a number of fields of knowledge. Sometimes, a tempting vision of improving Polish people’s own economic status makes them decide to leave the homeland without any knowledge about the culture of the adopted society. The article is focused on the analysis of the language competence of Polish grammar school students in Ireland. There are presented weaknesses and strategies for surviving in the new environment without language skills and its influence on adaptation to school and life in Ireland. The article is supported by the research conducted in Irish grammar schools and Polish weekend schools in Ireland (2010–2011).

Opis:
The dynamics of the integration process varies in case of the first and the following generations of emigrants. It is quite challenging though to describe all the details of the integration process of Polish migrants to Ireland due to the short period of Poland’s membership in the EU. However, it is important to analyze the barriers which are becoming more and more visible on the way to integration of the first “pioneer migrant generation”. The aim of the paper is the multi-dimentional analysis of the factors impeding Polish migrants’ integration into the Irish society. The analysis refers to the empirical research based on the technique of in-depth interviews. The main focus is on the two aspects of integration: the social and the cultural ones. The social aspect of integration includes: career trajectory, participation in the social life of the local community and interpersonal relations. The cultural aspect of integration includes: language skills, values and behavioural patterns as well as everyday culture and rituals. The analysis focuses both on individuals and on institutions, that is the activities of Polish-Irish associations, and stresses the factors impeding the integration process of Polish migrants. Those factors can be divided into: social factors such as weak ties with Irish people and institutions and desire to come back to Poland; cultural factors such as insufficient language skills and lack of knowledge of norms and behavioral patterns; legal factors such as reluctance to acquire Irish citizenship and unwillingness to participate in the Irish political life; and finally, spatial factors that is lack of contacts with the Irish people in the migrant’s local communities.

Opis:
The article looks at the origins and scale of migration of Poles to the Republic of Ireland and the characteristics of migrants in light of various statistical data. It outlines the characteristics of the Polish population in Ireland on the basis of 2016 census, taking into account the main directions of changes in relation to previous censuses. Polish immigrants, very few in Ireland before 2004, have since become the largest group of non-Irish nationals, stable in size and spread all over the country. Despite its size and multiple ties to Ireland such as the growing number of Polish-Irish citizens and the increasing share of homeowners, it is argued that the Polish community has limited visibility and impact on the Irish society and politics. The author also points out the housing crisis and Brexit-related risks as important challenges for the Polish community.

Opis:
The paper delineates the core issues surrounding political, socio-economic, and territorial implications on a number of transport issues on the island of Ireland by looking at the record of transport in the early 20th century, concentrating on the disintegration of the rail network, and its effect on local population, as this was the foremost method of transport during this period. An amalgamation of interviews and open-ended questionnaires directed towards politicians painted a vivid picture of the core principals influencing their parties‟ policies in relation to transport on the island. Participant observation of an overt nature was incorporated to investigate the views of those who feel they have suffered as a result of the neglected border region, along with the other areas of the northwest, and the policies of their political representatives. The data also reinforced the notion that other arguments also portrayed that security reasons in the latter half of the century in the north contributed to the problem. The paper looks at the discourse of political stagnation to motivation over the last century and the political manifestations that have created this tidal shift. A preliminary questionnaire survey was conducted to explore a number of key issues such as (a) island‟s troubled past and the land transport infrastructure, (b) reasons why the railway and road networks in the proximity of the border counties have become so stagnant, (c) perceived impacts of devolution and the peace process on transport on the island, and (f) possibilities of stronger cooperation and cohesion between the north and the south in relation to transport.
Obserwacje jawnego charakteru uczestników zostały włączone do badania poglądów tych, którzy czuli, że ucierpieli w rezultacie zaniedbania pogranicza regionu, wzdłuż innych obszarów północnego zachodu, i polityki przedstawicieli politycznych.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to analyze the opportunities and threats for Northern Ireland after the EU referendum in United Kingdom. As a basis for the research method a study based on the analysis of selected information sources was used. The referendum on the United Kingdom’s continuing membership of the European Union resulted in a victory for those wishing to leave the Union, and has become the impulse for discussions on the possible directions for future developments in Northern Ireland. There are two scenarios being considered: Northern Ireland remaining within the United Kingdom, but outside the European Union, leaving the United Kingdom and uniting with the Republic of Ireland, which would enable it to retain its membership of the European Union. A referendum on unifying Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which is supported by republicans, is currently neither justified – the lackof sufficient support of the population, nor is it possible – as the proposition would be vetoed by the main unionist parties and by the government in London which is fully committed to maintaining the unity of the United Kingdom. If, however, the unifi cation of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland occurred, in addition to the enormous initial cost, it could instigate the threat of destabilisation of the political scene and rekindle conflicts between Catholic and Protesant groups. In the long term, uniting with the Republic of Ireland would enable Northern Ireland to maintain a strong developmental impulse arising from the benefits of being a member of the EU; such as access to the Single European Market, structural funds, etc., which the province may lose if it stays within the United Kingdom. The real effects on Northern Ireland will depend on the results of the negotiations and decisions reached by the United Kingdom and the European Union on the conditions on exiting the Union and the future directions, forms and principles for further co-operation. Its economic development is of fundamental signifi cance for the future of Northern Ireland, including the peace process.

Opis:
The following essay attempts to shed some light on Michael Longley’s poems about birds, which form a fairly complicated network of mutual enhancements and cross-references. Some of them are purely descriptive lyrics. Such poems are likely to have the name of a given species or a specific individual representative of that species in the title. Others make references to birds or use them for their own agenda, which often transcends the parameters of pure description. Sometimes birds perform an evocative function (“Snow Geese”), prompt the poet to explore the murky mysteries of iniquity (“The Goose”), judge human affairs from the avian vantage (“Aftermath”), or raise ecological problems (“Kestrel”). Most of the time, however, Longley is careful not to intrude upon their baffling otherness. Many of his bird poems are suffused with an aura of subtle yet suggestive eroticism, a conflation of the avian and the amorous.

Opis:
The abject failure of British Prime Minister Theresa May to get the United Kingdom’s (UK) Withdrawal Agreement from the European Union (EU) through Parliament on 15 January 2019, with MPs overwhelmingly rejecting it by 432 votes to 202, has been put down to a variety of reasons. Primary among them has been the question of the post-Brexit status of the land border between the Republic of Ireland and the UK’s province of Northern Ireland. Although an issue which was initially seen as of minor importance, the significance of the Irish border steadily grew over time until it became the main stumbling block in UKEU Brexit negotiations brought about by the decision of the British people to leave the EU in a referendum held on 23 June 2016. Indeed, the key term of the ensuing debate, namely ‘the Irish backstop’, produced such confusion among politicians, political pundits and the general public that the House of Commons, split between so-called Brexiteers and Remainers, decided to reject May’s deal out of hand. This article seeks to argue that, from June 2016 (the time of the referendum) up to January 2019 (the time of the first vote on May’s Brexit deal in Parliament), the issue of the Irish backstop was seriously underestimated before suddenly taking centre stage and ultimately sabotaging the Withdrawal Agreement from within.

Opis:
This study documents the first palynological data from the Silurian of the Dunquin Inlier of the Dingle Peninsula and focuses on the lower part of the succession. The previously undated Coosglass Slate Formation contains a low diversity Llandovery to early Wenlock acritarch assemblage, confirming the previously enigmatic Coosglass Slate Formation as the oldest formation in the Silurian succession. The lithofacies and acritarch biofacies suggest the mudstones of the Coosglass Slate Formation represent a low energy, offshore, muddy shelf palaeoenvironment. The Ferriter' s Cove Formation, a succession of five offshore to tidal-flat regressive marine cycles yielded more diverse palynological assemblages. Acritarchs and cryptospores from the Ferriter's Cove Formation confirm a Wenlock (Homerian) age for this formation. The integration of palynological and sedimentological data from four of the offshore to tidal-flat regressive cycles reveals three consistent palynomorph distribution trends: (1) offshore and shoreface depositional facies contain the most diverse palynological assemblages in which acritarchs with long and ramified processes dominate; (2) back-barrier tidal-flat facies are characterized by terrestrially derived palynomorphs, particularly cryptospores, together with a restricted acritarch assemblage of mainly micrhystrid and veryhachid forms with small simple processes; (3) back-barrier lagoonal facies with patch reefs are dominated by the sphaeromorph acritarch Leiosphaeridia.

ECONOMIC INTEGRATION
Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to assess the level of economic integration of Polish national in rural Ireland and to analyse the non-economic determinants of this process in the context of the EU 2004 enlargement. The paper focuses on a micro level analysis of migrants’ economic integration and a macro level analysis of the Irish labour market impact on migrants’ integration during the period of economic prosperity between 2004 and 2007. It explores neoclassic economic theory, NELM theory as well as dual labour market theory and network theory to assess migrants’ integration with the labour market. The paper is based on the main findings of a research study conducted in 2007 in all four provinces of the Republic of Ireland. The study employed mixed methods, including: literature review, face-to-face and electronic surveys, elite interviews and a focus group discussion. The research findings revealed that Polish migrants in rural Ireland were a well-educated and highly motivated workforce and not the resource-poor from the most impoverished provinces of Poland as one might envisage. They were either employed or in education prior to migration. The choice of the migration destination was largely determined by the Polish migratory network and work opportunities in rural Ireland. Most of migrants indicated temporality of stay. Many factors influence the permanency of stay, not least the economic trends in both Ireland and Poland but also life opportunities and sense of life stability. Due to the high market demand for unskilled and semi-skilled workers, most of the respondents were employed but the research found ‘an occupational gap’ in the employment patterns and significant levels of underemployment among migrants. However, the Irish authorities did little to capitalise on this potential opportunity. Finally, the paper presents how work conditions, including nationality represented at work or language used at work impacted on integration. It is concluded that the ‘brain drain’ experienced in Poland was mirrored by a ‘brain waste’ in Ireland.

The opinion provides an assessment of the correctness of the choice by the Council of Ministers of the procedure for ratification of the Protocol on the concerns of the Irish people on the Treaty of Lisbon, done at Brussels on 13 June 2012 (the so-called Irish Protocol). As a consequence of the Irish Parliament’s expectations relating to the protection of certain values and interests, which are of vital importance for Ireland and constitute a condition sine qua non of the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon, the development of the above mentioned Protocol and ratification thereof by all EU member states has proved to be necessary. The author claims that there are no grounds for the application of the procedure specified in Article 90 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, instead of the procedure referred to in Article 89 (1) of the Constitution (i.e. with prior consent granted in statute).

This paper is concerned with the challenges now faced by genealogy tourism in County Galway, situated on Ireland’s western seaboard. It presents, in a condensed format, the results of fieldwork which combined qualitative and quantitative methodologies, namely recorded focus group and one-to-one interviews (23 interviewees), participant observation (6 participants), diaries (2 participants) and questionnaires (302 respondents). This assisted in producing a comprehensive cross-sectoral snapshot of genealogy tourism in the region and has enabled us to tackle three pertinent questions: what are the reasons behind the 50% decline in the overall number of genealogy tourists visiting Ireland since 2000?; what are the profiles, needs and expectations of genealogy tourists coming to Ireland and how do they differ from those of mainstream tourists?; can the genealogy tourism market be recovered and - if yes - how can this be achieved? Finally, the investigation brought fresh perspectives on marketing Irish genealogy and incorporating it into new heritage tourism products that respect local needs but respond to the competitive environment of a globalised world in which the tourism industry continuously redefines its roles.

The participation of young people in the research process can be empowering for the participants and valuable for the research outcomes. This paper presents the methods used and outcomes of involving youth in the development of priorities for the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study in Ireland. Two participative workshops were conducted with young people: the first focused on identifiying what is important for people to understand about young people’s lives; the second served to expand and prioritise the themes identified, for the purpose of developing questionnaire items. Following idea generation, discussion and voting four themes emerged as priorities. These were; ‘Diversity and Individuality’, ‘Independence’, ‘Mental Health’ and ‘Bullying’.The process enabled young people to prioritise dimensions of their lives that deserved further quantitative research attention. The findings of the study identify the potential of such a methodology to transform the path of any research project concerning young people.

Opis:
Der Artikel enthält Zusammenfassungen nur in Englisch.
In The Ghosts of Belfast (2009), spectres of the conflict’s victims haunt Gerry Fegan, a former “soldier” and assassin. Picking up the metaphorical cue from the epigraph to Neville’s novel – “the place that lacks its ghosts is a barren place” – the article addresses the thriller’s supernatural content. The meaning and role of the titular ghosts have been in part determined by Neville’s debt to the Western traditions of making sense of the supernatural. However, they assume new roles within the narrative and possibly also in the author’s vision of the peace process: i.e. in keeping Northern Ireland “fertile”.
