Opis:
Previous research showed that accumulations of capital following stationary interest rates are underestimated by human judges. Hyperbolic discounting was suggested as a descriptive and explanatory model for this phenomenon. First, we investigated judged accumulated capital after a period of annual growth and decline. The degree of underestimation increased with accumulated growth and the results supported hyperbolic discounting as a descriptive model on the group level. However, the hyperbolic model did not apply to the data for one third of the participants. Second, we investigated how investment decisions were related to capital accumulation before the investments and to judgments of the possible outcomes of the future investments. To our surprise, the participants’ judgments of expected future accumulated capital did not add predictive power to predictions based on whether there was growth or decline before the investment decision. Unfortunately this strategy leads to suboptimal investment decisions.

The article describes the issues of dividend policy from the perspective of the psychology of the individual investor. A questionnaire survey conducted on 115 Polish stock exchange investors of different age, education, investment goals and professional activity aimed primarily at verifying the behaviour of the respondents in relation to the behaviour of the investors acting on the international market. The findings of the research not only confirm the convergence of the behaviour of Polish capital market investors against the behavioural dogmas of finance, but they also present new patterns of behaviour, provided that factors influencing an investment the decision-making process are taken into account.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to identify the motives behind the investment decisions of manufacturing enterprises in Poland in 1996-2003. The analysis was conducted with the use of probit models and an extensive body of panel data applying to individual enterprises to determine the probability of an investment decision. The author discovered that three key factors encouraged investment by manufacturing enterprises in all the surveyed groups (exporters, publicly traded companies, private domestic and foreign enterprises and companies with foreign capital). The first factor is the expected demand for an enterprise’s products, reflecting prospective sales possibilities. Another important factor is the use of production capacity, reflecting the company’s possibilities for expanding its volume of production on the basis of existing resources and assets. Both these factors are complementary with regard to the description of the investment process. Enterprises wanting to expand their sales tend to make investment decisions when their existing fixed assets are insufficient to increase the supply of products. The third key factor that determines investment decisions is prior involvement in a long-term investment process and the continuation of work in progress. In light of the research, the cost of raising funds and the restrictiveness of monetary policy are only loosely related to the course of investment processes in Poland.

Opis:
W prezentowanym artykule zajęto się dwoma zagadnieniami. W pierwszym rozważono i przedstawiono podejmowanie decyzji inwestycyjnych w świetle uwarunkowań makroekonomicznych.
Two issues were addressed in this paper. First, investment decisions were considered and presented in the light of macroeconomic conditions. Second, a formal analysis of factors influencing investment decisions by entrepreneurs was presented. Investments are an essential factor in the development of the company. They include costs for companies, which are aimed at obtaining benefits in the future. Investments stimulate the economy and serves as the next consumer spending, government spending and net exports a basic component of the Gross Domestic Product. In economic theory can be seen different approaches to investing. This is due to change in the approach to the problem in question and individual preferences. To carry out the research were used data taken from the Information Bulletin of the NBP and GUS Statistical Yearbooks. Analysis of macroeconomic variables studied showed that the greatest impact on investment are: investment in fixed assets, loans and advances to businesses, interest on deposits (6 months), the interest rate on loans for economic purposes. Concluding remarks were a synthesis of both descriptive and formal analysis.

Opis:
This study investigates the impact of the scheduled US and Poland macroeconomic news releases on investment decisions on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE). Our real time macroeconomic data cover the period between July 2006 and June 2009. The macroeconomic variables used include three groups of indexes: the general situation in the economy (GDP and unemployment rate for Poland, GDP and Nonfarm Payrolls for US), customers’ situation (CPI and Retail Sales Dynamics for Poland and US) and situation in enterprises sector (PPI and Industrial Production Dynamics for Poland and US). We find evidence that to a larger extent the investment decisions on the WSE are driven by the US macroeconomic variables rather than the Polish ones. Specifically, we find significant effects of the general situation in the US economy on the investment decisions. Of the macroeconomic news releases, the US GDP has the largest impact on the WSE.

Opis:
Aim/purpose–In this paper, a market volatility-robust portfolio composition frame-work under the modified Markowitz’s approach with the use of sampling methods is developed in order to improve the allocation efficiency for a portfolio of financial instruments formulation procedure at an increased market volatility.Design/methodology/approach–In order to overcome the risk of not receiving an optimal solution to the portfolio optimization (suboptimal outcomes of attribution of weights in allocation procedures) the developed model, first, implements the rationale that financial markets largely feature two states, i.e., quiescent (non-crisis; low market volatility) periods that are occasionally interspersed with stress (crisis; high market volatility) periods and, second, relies on many input samples of rates of return, either from an empirical distribution or a theoretical distribution (mitigating estimation risk). All computational results are reported for publicly available historical daily data sets on selected Polish blue-chip securities. Findings–Not only did the presented method produce more diversified allocation, but also successfully minimized the unfavorable effects of increased market volatility by providing less risky portfolios in comparison to Newton’s method, typically used for optimization under portfolio theory. Research implications/limitations–The research emphasized that in order to get a more diversified investment portfolio it is crucial to outdo the limitations of a single sample approach (utilized in Markowitz’s model) which may on some occasions be statistically biased. Thus it was proved that sampling methods allow to obtain a less concentrated and volatile allocation which contributes the investment decision-making. However, the current research focused solely on publicly available input data of particular securities. In this manner, an additional analysis can be prepared for other jurisdictions and asset classes. There can also be considered a use of other than variance risk measures.Originality/value/contribution–The suggested framework contributes to existing methods a wide array of quantitative data analysis and simulation tools for composing an unique approach that directly addresses the task of minimizing the adverse implications of increased market volatility that, in consequence, pertains to knowledgeable attributing of investment portfolio proportions of either individual or institutional investors. The prepared method is also proved to hold demanded computational quality and, importantly, the capacity for further development.

Opis:
Research background: Researchers traditionally assume that learning is a product of experience. In general, it means that learning can only take place through the attempt to solve a problem and therefore only takes place during activity (Arrow, 1962). On the ground of organizational theory, it has two implications. First, we can agree that repeated activity requires less effort. Second, we can argue that firms undertake activities, with which they have been the most successful in the past and that they expect to be the most successful in the future. Purpose of the article: The aim of the research is twofold. Firstly, this article aims to investigate if we can identify a relationship between the experience in PPP projects and the performance of initiatives of this kind. Secondly, the article aims to provide an interpretation of the relationship between experience and PPP performance. Methods: This research investigates factors influencing the survival of PPP projects in Poland over the period 2009?2015. Cox proportional hazard model is utilized to distinguish between PPPs that succeeded to the operation phase and those that were canceled on the procurement stage. Findings & Value added: The research confirms the existence of a positive relationship between experience in PPP and the outcome of a PPP development.
