Opis:
We investigate univalent holomorphic functions f defined on the unit disk such that f() is a hyperbolically convex subset of ; there are a number of analogies with the classical theory of (euclidean) convex univalent functions. A subregion Ω of is called hyperbolically convex (relative to hyperbolic geometry on ) if for all points a,b in Ω the arc of the hyperbolic geodesic in connecting a and b (the arc of the circle joining a and b which is orthogonal to the unit circle) lies in Ω. We give several analytic characterizations of hyperbolically convex functions. These analytic results lead to a number of sharp consequences, including covering, growth and distortion theorems and the precise upper bound on |f''(0)| for normalized (f(0) = 0 and f'(0) > 0) hyperbolically convex functions. In addition, we find the radius of hyperbolic convexity for normalized univalent functions mapping into itself. Finally, we suggest an alternate definition of "hyperbolic linear invariance" for locally univalent functions f: → that parallels earlier definitions of euclidean and spherical linear invariance.

We give a simple proof of the sufficiency of a log-lipschitzian condition for the uniqueness of G-measures and g-measures which were studied by G. Brown, A. H. Dooley and M. Keane. In the opposite direction, we show that the lipschitzian condition together with positivity is not sufficient. In the special case where the defining function depends only upon two coordinates, we find a necessary and sufficient condition. The special case of Riesz products is discussed and the Hausdorff dimension of Riesz products is calculated.

When the measurement errors may be assumed to be normal and independent from what is measured a subnormal model may be used. We define a linear and generalized linear hypotheses for these models, and derive F-tests for them. These tests are shown to be UMP for linear hypotheses as well as strictly unbiased and strongly consistent for these hypotheses. It is also shown that the F-tests are invariant for regular transformations, possess structural stability and are almost strongly consistent for generalized linear hypothesis. An application to a mixed model studied by Michalskyi and Zmyślony is shown.

This article describes use of the Generalized Algebraic Difference Approach for derivation of generic dynamic site equations. The generic equations are useful in situations of unspecific expectations with regards to the final model form where one wants to test simultaneously in a single fitting many various models and assumptions about the modeled processes. Equations derived in this work are extremely flexible with various patterns of polymorphisms and asymptotes. Even thought in principle the generic equations have more parameters, those derived with methodology proposed here are very parsimonious.

In the paper I discuss some premises of “quantum mechanics” with regard to the thesis that the time arrow does (not) exist. In this context I consider above all the famous Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen’s experiment (EPR-experiment). I also indicate Schrödinger’s interpretation of wave function “symmetrical” towards time (nomological isotropy) and the peculiar understanding of the pair particle-antiparticle, assuming that the direction of time can be reversed. Eventually, I discuss the issue of measurement in quantum mechanics with which the existence of time arrow (anisotropy) is often linked. If it comes to the interpretations of quantum mechanics, from the point of which I consider the issues in question, then in principle I limit myself to two: the so-called Copenhagen interpretation and David Bohm’s conception of “hidden parameters.” I arrive at a conclusion that the premises of quantum mechanics that are at issue here cannot be sufficient grounds for a conclusive recognition of the reversibility (non-existence) of time arrow.

Opis:
The development of a non-certainty-equivalent adaptive control system for the control of a nonlinear aeroelastic system is the subject of this paper. The prototypical aeroelastic wing section considered here includes structural nonlinearity and a single control surface for the purpose of control. Its dynamical model has two-degree-of-freedom and describes the plunge and pitch motion. It is assumed that the model parameters (except the sign of one of the control input coefficients) are not known. The uncontrolled aeroelastic model exhibits limit cycle oscillation beyond a critical free-stream velocity. Based on the attractive manifold, and the immersion and invariance methodologies, a non-certainty-equivalent adaptive state variable feedback control law for the trajectory tracking of the pitch angle is derived. Using the Lyapunov analysis, asymptotic convergence of the state variables to the origin is established. It is shown that the trajectory of the system converges to a manifold. The special feature of the designed control system is that the closed-loop system asymptotically recovers the performance of a deterministic controller. This cannot happen if certainty-equivalent adaptive controllers are used. Simulation results are presented which show that the control system suppresses the oscillatory responses of the system in the presence of large parameter uncertainties.

Opis:
In a fundamental book [5] on the so-called network calculus and research papers using this technique, as for example those cited in this paper, the notion of causal linear time-invariant teletraffic systems (networks) is used. It has been mentioned in [5] that these systems are analogous to the causal linear time-invariant systems (circuits) described by integral convolution (or convolution sum in the case of discrete ones) in classical systems theory. Note that networks considered in the network calculus are described by other type of convolution that uses the infimum operation. Moreover, the algebra used in the above technique is also different. This is the so-called min-plus (or max-plus) algebra. Therefore, it is not obvious that the teletraffic systems (networks) described by the infimum convolution fulfill the following basic properties: linearity, causality, time-invariance, associativity and commutativity of their convolution operator, known from the classical theory of systems. The objective of this paper is to prove or show in detail that the above properties hold.

Opis:
Design of a state observer is an important issue in control systems and signal processing. It is well known that it is difficult to obtain the desired properties of state feedback control if some or all of the system states cannot be directly measured. Moreover, the existence of a lumped perturbation and/or a time delay usually reduces the system performance or even produces an instability in the closed-loop system. Therefore, in this paper, a new Variable Structure Observer (VSO) is proposed for a class of uncertain systems subjected to a time varying delay and a lumped perturbation. Based on the strictly positive real concept, the stability of the equivalent error system is verified. Based on the generalized matrix inverse approach, the global reaching condition of the sliding mode of the error system is guaranteed. Also, the proposed variable structure observer will be shown to possess the invariance property in relation to the lumped perturbation, as the traditional variable structure controller does. Furthermore, two illustrative examples with a series of computer simulation studies are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

The aim of the paper is to point out certain analogies between de Saussure’s theoretical reflection on the ontic properties of expressions and the corresponding old Chinese and Indian concepts. Following a review of de Saussure’s ideas, the author proceeds to present their Eastern analogues. The main focus is turned to the fact that the Chinese Moists as well as the Indian grammarians and philosophers elicited proportion as the key to the understanding of the mechanism of language. The Sanscrit grammarians, the philosophers of Mīmāṃsa as well as, most probably, Gongsun Long in China saw clearly the invariant and non-material nature of expressions. The Buddhist logicians and the Moists also pointed to the oppositional character of expressions as constitutive for language.

This paper defines the concept of simple strategy and introduces three kinds of simple strategies: wealth-invariant, scale-invariant and "wealthier-accept more". For three commonly used utility function families: CARA, CRRA and DARA equivalent characterizations are obtained in terms of the corresponding simple strategy, in terms of the buying and selling price properties, and in terms of the utility function properties as expressed by Cauchy functional equations. Moreover, an extension of famous Pratt (1964) theorem is proved which involves buying price for a lottery as an alternative measure of comparative risk aversion. Additionally a number of propositions on both selling and buying price for a lottery and CRRA utility class are proved.

Multi-Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MGCFA) demonstrated the deficiency of the four original European Commission (EC) items for consumer confidence. Fit of the MGCFA model was unacceptable and without scalar invariance, index comparison between study periods was not permissible. This provided clear motivation for a plausible alternative index specification to comply with requirements for single-dimensionality and meaning invariance throughout the study period. The MGCFA model using a new set of items demonstrated partial metric and partial scalar invariance. Using the structural equation framework, consumer confidence was revealed as strongly interrelated with unemployment forecast and durable goods purchase.

This paper presents a method for affine invariant recognition of two-dimensional binary objects based on 2D Fourier power spectrum. Such function is translation invariant and their moments of second order enable construction of affine invariant spectrum except of the rotation effect. Harmonic analysis of samples on circular paths generates Fourier coefficients whose absolute values are affine invariant descriptors. Affine invariancy is approximately saved also for large digital binary images as demonstrated in the experimental part. The proposed method is tested on artificial data set first and consequently on a large set of 2D binary digital images of tree leaves. High dimensionality of feature vectors is reduced via the kernel PCA technique with Gaussian kernel and the k-NN classifier is used for image classification. The results are summarized as k-NN classifier sensitivity after dimensionality reduction. The resulting descriptors after dimensionality reduction are able to distinguish real contours of tree leaves with acceptable classification error. The general methodology is directly applicable to any set of large binary images. All calculations were performed in the MATLAB environment.
