Intergenerational education and intergenerational integration are one of the most important challenges caused by the aging of Polish society and its consequences. The area of these challenges includes searching for new institutional forms for integration and intergenerational education. The article presents a project of an intergenerational educational house consisting of: intergenerational home, community club, day care centre for the elderly. The planned institution fits in with the ideas of Polish social pedagogy and social work, aimed at releasing social strengths both in the individual, group and local community dimension. The basis of the described institution's activity is the broadly understood education, including intergenerational education, which not only serves the enrichment and further development of its students, but also promotes social solidarity, identifies and uses the potential of individuals, groups and the local environment.

The aim of this article is to present the concept of intergenerational education in Germany in the context of the solidarity idea. As challenge for intergenerational education the authoress describes the demographic change in Germany and their consequences for intergenerational relationships. So one of the main aims of the intergenerational education is to build positive relationships between different generations. The intergenerational relationships are describes in the article both in the micro dimension (family) and in the macro dimension (society). Then the authoress presents the idea of solidarity, which is the base of the intergenerational education concept. In conclusion she underlines, that for intergenerational relationships is ambivalence typical and the building of positive relations between generations requires to manage with ambivalence. Solidarity can be an effect of constructive managing with ambivalence in intergenerational relations.

The paper focuses on presenting the research results of a community-based project titled ‘ICT Guides’, in which we investigated the features and functions of intergenerational learning with the use of ICT tools, which open the way for the virtual word. This was accomplished by surveying 267 youth and seniors attending 16 ICT courses in Gothenburg (Sweden), Sheffield (the United Kingdom), Madrid (Spain), and Berlin (Germany), with the use of a questionnaire. Both groups perceive intergenerational learning with the use of ICT as a chance to get to know the other group, despite age and cultural differences. With the use of ICT tools in intergenerational learning, mobile devices make up for a lack of a good command of language when communication problems occur, through application of texts, pictures, movies and music available online. ICT also facilitates mutual understanding and contributes to breaking the polarization that can occur between immigrant youth and unrelated adults, to the mutual benefit of both parties.

Using the micro data of Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) in 2017, this paper analyzes the logical relationship between intergenerational care, intergenerational support and subjective well-being of the elderly. The study found that intergenerational care can significantly enhance the subjective well-being of the elderly, and there are age and income heterogeneity. Further analysis found that there is a partial mediating effect of intergenerational support in the effect of intergenerational care on the subjective well-being of the elderly. Based on this, it is necessary to build an elderly care service system that is coordinated by home-based community institutions and combined with medical care and health care, vigorously develop an inclusive nursery service system, establish and improve the nursery policy and mechanism, and promote the professional and standardized development of infant care services.

Within the context of high filial norms and a limited formal care system for the elderly in Lithuania the paper examines the effects of adult children migration on intergenerational solidarity from elderly parents left behind perspective. More specifically, we analyze if changed geographic proximity as a result of adult children migration has crucial effects on the associational, affectual and functional dimensions of solidarity or it is (also) being predicted by other individual and familial factors. The analysis is based on a quantitative survey of elderly parents (N=305) with at least one migrant child. The results suggest that even if adult children migration has some negative impact for associational solidarity (and to a certain extent, for affectual one), in a way it is being compensated with positive impact on functional solidarity in terms of financial support. While greater geographic proximity as a result of adult children migration is the crucial factor of associational solidarity and determines some forms of functional solidarity, the affectual dimension of solidarity is being shaped by other familial and individual predictors.

W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę pojęciowego określenia międzypokoleniowej edukacji stanowiącej nieodłączną część międzypokoleniowej praktyki, która jest odpowiedzią na zjawisko międzypokoleniowej segregacji nasilającej się wskutek postępującego procesu starzenia się społeczeństwa oraz towarzyszących temu zmian ogólnospołecznych i kulturowych. Celem edukacji międzypokoleniowej jest zawiązanie na drodze formalnych i intencjonalnych działań łączności między generacjami, najczęściej skrajnymi, z intencją czerpania obustronnych korzyści i wzajemnego ubogacania się, a w szerszym znaczeniu – wzmacniania rodzin i całych społeczności. Międzypokoleniowe uczenie się to w praktyce zjawisko stosunkowo młode, podobnie jak w nauce, w której dopiero tworzone są jej podwaliny teoretyczne i empiryczne. W niniejszym tekście zaprezentowano wciąż nowatorskie na gruncie polskim zagadnienie międzypokoleniowej edukacji w perspektywie koncepcyjnego dorobku praktyki międzypokoleniowej.
This article describes a concept of intergenerational education as an inherent part of activities responding to an intergenerational segregation being a result of progressing society’s aging phenomena and related general social and cultural changes. It aims at establishing contact among generations (mostly distant ones) through formal and intentional practice, focusing on mutual benefits and personal development and in broader context on family and community reinforcement. Intergenerational learning is a new phenomenon in both practice and science which has just formed its theoretical and empirical foundations. This paper presents issue of still innovative in Poland intergenerational education in an intergenerational practice’s output perspective.

Aim. The aim of the research is to identify intergenerational communication problems in tourism and hospitality enterprises and define teaching/learning initiatives and methodologies required to develop employees’ competencies to solve intergenerational communication problems. Methods. 12 semi-structured expert interviews with tourism and hospitality business owners and/or top-level management in three countries (Lithuania, Latvia, and Sweden) were conducted to collect information on generational differences in communication and intergenerational communication problems in the company. Qualitative content analysis was applied for data analysis. Results. Nine main groups of intergenerational communication problems have been detected and corresponding teaching/learning initiatives and methodologies that take into account the specific characteristics of each generation are recommended to eliminate each of the problems identified. Conclusion. Generational differences and differences in communication lead to intergenerational communication conflicts in tourism and hospitality enterprises. The suggestions on organising adult learners’ teaching/learning process based on generational differences may be applicable in workplace learning and also in educational institutions providing adult education. Cognitive value. The paper focusses on analysing intergenerational aspects in communication processes in tourism and hospitality enterprises and offers the means of solving communication conflicts by employing certain adult teaching/learning initiatives and methodologies suitable to non-formal and formal adult learning.

The concept of space is depicted in the notion of social sciences. Intergenerational relations take place in a specific type of space, which consists of individual segments. The article deals with intergenerational learning in the Czech family from three generations perspective. Intergenerational learning means phenomena and processes aiding mutual transfer of knowledge, experiences, and attitudes in the family that take place in specific family life situations, in interactions, and during the shared activities of the participating generations: children, parents, and grandparents. The thesis of pro-learning family culture-the influence of family characteristics such as communication, family climate and cohesion on learning in the family is elaborated on. The thesis of pro-learning family culture is developed further to identify four different models of family learning from intergenerational perspective. A mixed research design was used.

Dynamika współczesnej rzeczywistości wyraża się w szybkich i radykalnych zmianach demograficzno-społecznych. Zmiany te wymuszają konieczność dostosowania istniejących instytucji do potrzeb wszystkich grup wiekowych. Niezwykle interesującą instytucją wychodząca naprzeciw potrzeb osób w każdym wieku są uniwersytety międzypokoleniowe. W artykule podjęto się ukazania specyfiki funkcjonowania w zakresie integracji międzypokoleniowej stowarzyszenia o nazwie Uniwersytet Międzypokoleniowy przy Wydziale Nauk Społecznych Uniwersytetu Warmińsko-Mazurskiego w Olsztynie (UM WNS). Wymieniona organizacja jest przykładem dobrej praktyki w zakresie działań sprzyjających solidarności międzygeneracyjnej i więzi oraz relacji międzypokoleniowych. Do badań wykorzystano metodę przeszukiwania i analizy źródeł wtórnych, znajdujących się w bieżącym archiwum podręcznym stowarzyszenia oraz archiwum cyfrowym zgromadzonym przez UM WNS. W artykule przedstawiono zarówno zarys działalności UM WNS w perspektywie współpracy organizacji z instytucjami środowiska lokalnego (zwłaszcza środowisk seniorskich), jak i charakterystykę pracy w obszarze międzypokoleniowym: realizacji warsztatów, wykładów, seminariów i konferencji.
The dynamics of contemporary reality are expressed in rapid and radical demographic and social changes. These changes necessitate the need to adapt existing institutions to the needs of all age groups. An extremely interesting institution meeting the needs of people of all ages are intergenerational universities. The article undertakes to show the specificity of functioning in the field of intergenerational integration of an association called the Intergenerational University at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (UM WNS). This organisation is an example of good practice in activities conducive to intergenerational solidarity and intergenerational ties and relationships. The research used the method of searching and analysing secondary sources, located in the current reference archive of the association and the digital archive collected by the UM WNS. The article presents both the outline of the activities of the UM WNS in the perspective of the organization's cooperation with institutions of the local environment (especially seniors) and the characteristics of work in the intergenerational area: the implementation of workshops, lectures, seminars and conferences.

Parochial catechesis in Belgium, especially in Flanders as the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, is confronted with a lot of challenges. This text deals with three main thematic clusters. The fi rst cluster centres on the relation between ‘Christianity’ and ‘culture’ and its consequences for the content and the method of the catechesis. In a context where Christianity and culture are no longer intrinsically linked to each other, new models of catechesis have to be found. The authors propose a ‘hermeneutical model of catechesis’, whereby many elements of the surrounding culture and of the faith tradition(s) are confronted with each other in a multidimensional way, challenging each other. In this vision, religious truth is not a set of dogmas that should be transmitted, but an open and ‘utopian’ search process that asks for new questions time and again. From a didactical as well as from a theological perspective this hermeneutical model offers new opportunities for catechesis. The second cluster can be summarized as ‘life-long’ and ‘life-wide’ learning. The authors argue that is it necessary to create vertical (intergenerational) and horizontal (among a generation or a speci fi c group) networks dealing with religious communication. Thereby they propose a speci fi c church organisation with lots of possibilities for cooperation between different parochial groups. The title of the article, catechesis inside out, refers to the vision that religious communication is not only a task inside church communities. The authors argue for open church communities daring to speak with people that hold to different world views. The second thematic cluster also deals with the organisation of the catechesis and more speci fi cally with the question of the target group or the age of those who are catechised. In a third movement the article deals with questions about finding ‘good’ catechists. At the end of the text the authors offer a summarizing re fl ection on the art work ‘Daughters of Eve’, which contains the main arguments they have dealt with.

The main aim of this paper is to juxtapose the normative aspect of intergenerational solidarity with specific care practices against the backdrop of Poland’s public debate on social expectations, costs and changes needed in the system of pensions and social benefits offered to elderly citizens (the systemic context of intergenerational solidarity). The paper presents grandparents’ practices in offering care to their grandchildren and children’s practices in supporting their elderly parents. Such practices originate not as much from the emotional aspect of intergenerational solidarity as from culture-defined expectations of specific age categories, reinforced by unavailability of public care institutions. The analysis, based on qualitative and quantitative data, finds that intergenerational solidarity in Poland is a source of multiple tensions (including gender-related ones).

The first part of the paper is a proposition of a replacement of the category ‘intergenerational solidarity’ (which is a rather idealistic, wishful thinking and descriptive term, cumbersome and difficult to use in the changing and complex social environment) with a term ‘intergenerational ambivalence’ as the latter refers to the conflicting expectations, commitments, norms, standards and actions of individual generations and their ambivalence, which, even if they divide the generations, constitute at the same time the essence of the intergenerational relations. Intergenerational ambivalence on the other hand much more precisely than intergenerational solidarity describes the relations between representatives of different generations as it very accurately reflects the specificity of the relations between generations that appear in the postmodern world with its conflicting expectations, as well as because it emphasises that the specificity of each category of generation reflects the ability of its representatives to cope with the contradicting ideas in their relations with older generations, and with ambivalences that are characteristic of a given place and time. The other part of the paper is an attempt to characterise the manner in which ambivalences that permeate the intergenerational relations are articulated in everyday actions, in particular in those realised through material culture, as well as the manner in which the specifics of today’s material culture increases those conflicts.
Głównym celem pierwszej części artykułu jest zaproponowanie, by zastąpić kategorię „solidarność międzypokoleniowa” (która ma charakter bardzo zideologizowany, bardziej życzeniowy niż opisowy i jest bardzo kłopotliwa do zastosowania w zmiennym, złożonym środowisku społecznym) pojęciem „ambiwalencja międzypokoleniowa”. To ostatnie odnosi się do sprzecznych ze sobą oczekiwań, zobowiązań, norm, działań poszczególnych generacji, do ambiwalencji, które choć dzielą, to jednocześnie stanowią istotę stosunków międzypokoleniowych. Kategoria ta dużo trafniej niż pojęcie solidarności międzypokoleniowej opisuje relacje łączące przedstawicieli poszczególnych pokoleń przede wszystkim dlatego, że bardzo dobrze odzwierciedla specyfikę związków pomiędzy poszczególnymi generacjami, które pojawiają się w ponowoczesnym, pełnym sprzecznych oczekiwań świecie, a także dlatego, że akcentuje ona, iż specyfikę poszczególnych kategorii pokoleniowych określa w dużej mierze to, jak radzą sobie one ze sprzecznościami obecnymi w relacjach ze starszymi generacjami, z ambiwalencjami charakterystycznymi dla określonego czasu i miejsca. Druga część artykułu poświęcona jest próbie scharakteryzowania tego, w jaki sposób ambiwalencje przenikające dziś międzypokoleniowe stosunki artykułują się w codziennych działaniach, przede wszystkim tych realizowanych za pośrednictwem kultury materialnej, a także tego, w jaki sposób współczesna specyfika tej ostatniej takie sprzeczności wzmaga.

W artykule autorka prezentuje własny sposób realizacji w duchu wartości chrześcijańskich wieloetapowego i wieloaspektowego projektu o charakterze senioralnym, integrującego młodzież o różnych potrzebach edukacyjnych z osobami starszymi ze środowiska lokalnego.
Upbringing is a lifelong process, one to which a person is subjected from birth to death. This process is based on an established system of values, which is first passed on to the child by the family, the immediate social environment. The ongoing socio-cultural, economic, political and demographic changes in Poland and the rest of the world indicate that the hierarchy of values of young people has changed over the years. It is essential that the generational transmission of traditional existential values is conducted through constructive intergenerational dialogue. This task should be implemented by both the family and social environment in which a young person exists. The institution of school is particularly important in this regard. In the article, the author presents her own way of implementing a multi-stage and multi-faceted senior project, integrating young people with different educational needs and the elderly from the local community in the spirit of Christian values.

Purpose: To explore how the predecessors and successors of Polish family businesses use and refine existing knowledge, identify knowledge deficiencies or absences, and create new knowledge during the working together stage. Methodology/approach: The article builds on qualitative empirical material gathered in 2018 and 2019 with a problem-centered interview approach aiming to capture the complex and potentially diverging realities of both generations. Altogether, 48 preliminary interview questionnaires were completed and, subsequently, 46 interviews were conducted. Findings: The study captured that the use of existing knowledge during the Working Together period is significantly supported by the fact that the old and young generation share several unarticulated beliefs, mental models, and behaviors. However, the identification of knowledge gaps and the creation of new knowledge are heavily hindered by the fear of confrontation and only declarative – instead of active – interest of the older generation in creating new knowledge. Originality/value: The article bridges the gap between the literature on organizational ambidexterity and family business by empirically investigating the intergenerational dynamics of owners’ families regarding knowledge creation. Moreover, we introduce the concept of intergenerational familial ambidexterity.

Newly arrived (refugees, migrants, transmigrants, immigrants) children require a shiftin intergenerational storytelling. Intergenerational storytelling enables culturally and linguistically diverse emergent learners exposure to not only language but socio-cultural knowledge, values and practices. This study examines the intergenerational storytelling and art session held at a co-joined pre-school and elderly care home. There were 15 pre-school children aged 4-6, half of whom were newly arrived in Finland, and 4 Finnish elder storytellers. The theme of the project was to utilize everyday socio-cultural practices. The study used Pink’s visual semiotic and Kress’ multimodality for analysis. The research investigated two questions: 1) To what extent can intergenerational multimodal storytelling benefit transmigrant, immigrant community engagement and identity? 2) In a globalized world, how do children’s relationships with multimodalities create learning (language, socio-cultural practices)? Data was collected from qualitative pre - and post-session discussions from the six storytelling sessions, video recordings made by the participants, and multimodal artwork created by the children after each storytelling session. The results revealed transmigrant children engaged with components of stories that connected to their residency situation. Additionally, children represented themselves in the art as response to multimodal storytelling sessions. Interactive storytelling was effective means for socio-cultural interaction between pre-school children and elderly storytellers/people.

Nowadays, when the migration processes have contributed to the high diversification of societies, one can observe that many social environments put extra emphasis on actions aimed at the integration of minority and majority groups. One of the issues connected with the integration of socio–cultural migrants with the host societies is their acquisition of intercultural competence. Having appropriate intercultural competencies increases the probability of success in the integration processes. However, this does not mean that the immigrants’ opportunities for integration in the cultural and intergenerational dimension are not problematic. Those difficulties are related to the multi-faceted cultural diversity of migrant groups recognizing different norms and values, what in a consequence may lead to tensions and even conflicts. It should be emphasized that intercultural competence and its implications – the success of integration or the integration failure – do not depend only on cultural diversity. What is important is the age of the migrants in addition to other psychological factors such as awareness of one’s self-centredness, attribution error or the group anxiety. The paper focuses on the acquisition of intercultural competences by the migrants in the integration process with the majority group depending on the migrants’ age and cultural capital. From the theoretical point of view, the younger the migrant is and the more similar to the new social reality the cultural context of the migrant’s is, the higher chance is to acquire the necessary cultural competences. It is indeed related to the new reality of the migrant’s life. Moreover, the level of one’s awareness of one’s self-centredness and the group anxiety as well as one’s perception of the reasons for one’s own and other’s behaviours (attribution error) can diversify the process.

The paper is an attempt to analyse the influence of generational differences on social relations and psycho-social atmosphere in the contemporary work environment. The starting point of this analysis is the category of Echo-Boomers, which is how the generation of Millennials (also named Generation Y) is called due to certain qualities that make them similar to Baby Boomers, who were born in the twenty years after World War II. The subject of this analysis are some overlapping areas of both generations regarding value systems, attitudes, as well as cultural practices related to professional activity and balance between work and the private sphere. The purpose of this analysis is to verify the hypothesis that there is a significant similarity between both generations, a generational resonance.

Demographic cycles – phenomena that consist of intertwined baby booms and baby busts – have been observed for several centuries. Its consequence is that numerically big generations at the childbearing age cause high birth rate and the other way round. These regularities are significantly disrupted by crucial historical events – first of all by world wars, but also by increased emigration waves. Taking into account modern society we focus on present times. Obviously, it is only a metaphor because it is difficult to be restricted only to static presentations while talking about problems connected with the human life span. In order to do that three temporal dimensions are needed – that is also past and future. Only in this way the directions and pace of social changes can be presented.

Family education includes the whole of conscious and deliberate family influences that take place spontaneously, accidentally and unintentionally. It leads to long -lasting changes in the human personality. The adults play the largest role in this process - they are the mentors in shaping the young generation. With regard to the intergenerational transmission of tradition, education takes place not only through the verbal message of known customs, but also through experiencing, imitating and teaching the youngest generation in relation to various spheres of life - both simple activities and transmission of attitudes, social, moral and economic values and political. The main purpose of the research was to get to know the answer to the question: How does the intergenerational transmission of tradition and what educational habits are passed on in the family. In addition, the answers of people from three specific age ranges were also compared: 12 - 20 years; 21 - 60 years; over 60 years.

A man builds his own hierarchy of values during the whole life. The hierarchy structure is impacted by environment in which the man lives, mainly: family, kindergarten, school, peer group, church, mass media as well as important or chance events that man experiences during his/her life. However, the key meaning in understanding the essence of fundamental values, respecting them and building so-called moral core is family upbringing. Both parents and other family members, especially grandparents, play essential role in this process. In this paper we present results of empirical research. The main objective was to learn the opinion of older generation representatives on the values in modern world in the context of intergenerational transmission and determining factors.

The main aim of the paper was to analyse determinants of care for elderly parents provided by adult children in Poland. The data were from the first wave of the Polish Generations and Gender Survey (GGS-PL) carried out in 2010 and 2011. The logistic regression model with the dependent binary variable describing the fact of providing care to elderly mother or father has been applied. The obtained results are mostly in line with those described in the literature on this topic. Generally the probability of giving care to elderly parents increases with respondent’s age. Women have higher chances of providing care to older mother or father than men do. Persons better educated (with secondary or higher level of education) are characterized by higher probability of caring for elderly parents. Parameters estimates for several variables such as place of residence, living arrangements, employment status and health status were statistically insignificant. As it would have been anticipated health status of a parent significantly increases the probability of providing care to a mother or a father. Moreover, the better the relationship between children and parents, the higher chances of taking care of older parents. In addition, the more respondents agreed with the opinion of responsibility of children for care for elderly parents, the higher the risk of providing an instrumental help by them was.
