Opis:
Development and geographical expansion of multinational corporations makes it more complex and more often we are dealing with cultural diversity within teams of employees. Mutual cooperation of foreigners and local staff raises many intercultural interactions, both negative and positive. The purpose of this article is to identify the benefits and weaknesses arising from intercultural interactions between foreigners and local staff in the German subsidiary operating in Poland. The research procedure was a case study and a method was 12 structured interviews with Polish managers. Research problems concerned the general perception of Polish managers in relation to cooperation with foreigners. The respondents indicated the benefits and problems of this cooperation, as well as practical guidance (advice) to improve these interactions. This case study enriched the empirical achievements in the area of the new trend in management sciences, which is the positive organizational scholarship (POS).

Metabolic and toxicodynamic interactions of some organic solvents in rats repeatedly treated with medium dose levels were examined. It was shown that both n-hexane and ethylbenzene significantly inhibited tetrachloroethylene metabolism during a 2-week period. n-Hexane and tetrachloroethylene enhanced metabolism of ethylbenzene whereas ethylbenzene suppressed n-hexane metabolism only at the end of the experiment. Biochemical changes, especially the drop in the level of non-protein sulfhydryl groups in tissues of rats treated with organic solvent mixtures, were significantly less pronounced than those observed after these chemicals were administered separately. These results demonstrate that metabolic interactions between hydrocarbons and chloroalkene may lead to a modification of the biological response to these compounds.

The problem of monetary aspect of welfare in employees’ household was undertaken in this paper. In order to identify the households in danger of poverty, the binary logit models approach was applied. It was found that the estimation of models without the interaction terms results in misspecification error. Due to this, the interaction terms, between the socio-economic factors of households were included in the model. The obtained results can have significant importance in the aspect of social policy in Poland.

Using the B3PW91/6-31G(d) computational procedure, we fnd two types of complexes to be formed between aliphatic amines and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). Type 1 are noncovalent, primarily electrostatic interactions that occur in the vicinities of the NO2 groups; Type 2 are δ-adducts, at carbons 1, 3 and 5. In Type 1, the TNT framework is very little affected. In Type 2, however, the site of the complex becomes quasi-tetrahedral, with longer bonds to its neighbors in the ring; the C-NO2 bonds are shortened. The Type 1 complexes have weakly negative (attractive) interaction enthalpies. For one of them, utilizing a chargetransfer formalism, we obtained a wave length for an electronic transition to a low-lying dative excited state that is in good agreement with observed values. The Type 2 interaction enthalpies are near-zero or even positive; however all of the complexes correspond to energy minima (no imaginary frequencies). For one of the Type 2, a transition state to a nitronic acid was found, with an activation enthalpy of only 5.6 kcal/mole. This indicates a possible route for amine-induced decomposition of TNT.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between students’ gender and teacher-student interactions in a sample of Botswanan junior secondary school Physical Education lessons. Ninety-six lessons taught by male and female physical education teachers were observed, coded, and analysed for gendered interaction patterns. Chi-square test of independence was used for data analysis. The level of statistical significance was set at p <. 05. Results reveal a statistically significant association between students’ gender and teacher-student interactions with respect to task allocation and misbehaviour management. No significant associations were found between students’ gender and teachers’ questions and feedback. The study concludes that systematic observations of pedagogical interactions in physical education settings are necessary to highlight deeply entrenched gender equity issues in co-educational classrooms. Physical education teacher preparation programmes must impress upon pre- and in-service candidates the importance of and different approaches to enacting gender-sensitive instructional practices. Providing physical education teachers with contextualized pedagogical directions and resources for analysing and addressing gender bias in their classroom will equip them to create inclusive, interactive, respectful, equitable, and productive lessons.

Structural bioinformatics approaches applied to the alpha- and beta-glycosidases from the GH4 enzyme family reveal that, despite low sequence identity, these enzymes possess quite similar global structural characteristics reflecting a common reaction mechanism. Locally, there are a few distinctive structural characteristics of GH4 alpha- and beta-glycosidases, namely, surface cavities with different geometric characteristics and two regions with highly dissimilar structural organizations and distinct physicochemical properties in the alpha- and beta-glucosidases from Thermotoga maritima. We suggest that these structurally dissimilar regions may be involved in specific protein-protein interactions and this hypothesis is sustained by the predicted distinct functional partners of the investigated proteins. Also, we predict that alpha- and beta-glycosidases from the GH4 enzyme family interact with difenoconazole, a fungicide, but there are different features of these interactions especially concerning the identified structurally distinct regions of the investigated proteins.

Opis:
Methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MetRS) belongs to the family of 20 enzymes essential for protein biosynthesis. It links covalently methionine with its cognate tRNA. Crystal structures solved for bacterial MetRSs have given a number of interesting insights into enzyme architecture and methionylation catalysis. A comparison of sequences of MetRSs belonging to all kingdoms of life, as well as numerous biochemical and genetic studies have revealed the presence of various additional domains appended to the catalytic core of synthetase. They are responsible for interactions with tRNA and proteins. Tertiary structure of C-terminal tRNA-binding appendices can be deduced from those determined for their homologues: tRNA binding protein 111 and endothelial monocyte-activating polypeptide II. Contacts between MetRS and other proteins could be mediated not only by noncatalytic peptides but also by structural elements present in the catalytic core, e.g. Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) motifs. Additional activities involve MetRS in the maintenance of translational fidelity and in coordination of ribosome biogenesis with protein synthesis.

In this investigation, galvanic interaction between galena and pyrite in flotation and its effect on floatability of pyrite were studied. Rest and mixed potential studies in the presence and absence of a collector indicated that pyrite was nobler than galena under all investigated conditions. Therefore, pyrite served as a cathode in galvanic interactions with galena. Floatability of pyrite was performed alone and as a mixture with galena in the ratios of pyrite to galena equal to 1:4, 1:1 and 4:1. The experiments were conducted with air and nitrogen. In any galvanic contact between pyrite and galena, anodic oxidation occurred on the galena surface, and hydrolysed lead species adsorbed on the pyrite surface. The investigation of the various reactions occurring on the sample surface was investigated by ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) extraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. In the presence of nitrogen, floatability of pyrite increased. The recovery of pyrite in the presence of air was 22%, while in the mixture with galena (ratio 1:4) the recovery increased to 43%. The results indicated that the presence of galena improved floatability of pyrite.

The aftermath of influenza infection is determined by a complex set of host-pathogen interactions, where genomic variability on both viral and host sides influences the final outcome. Although there exists large body of literature describing influenza virus variability, only a very small fraction covers the issue of host variance. The goal of this review is to explore the variability of host genes responsible for host-pathogen interactions, paying particular attention to genes responsible for the presence of sialylated glycans in the host endothelial membrane, mucus, genes used by viral immune escape mechanisms, and genes particularly expressed after vaccination, since they are more likely to have a direct influence on the infection outcome.

Canthaxanthin (β,β-carotene 4,4' dione) used widely as a drug or as a food and cosmetic colorant may have some undesirable effects on human health, caused mainly by the formation of crystals in the macula lutea membranes of the retina of an eye. Experiments show the exceptional molecular organization of canthaxanthin and a strong effect of this pigment on the physical properties of lipid membranes. The most striking difference between canthaxanthin and other macular pigments is that the effects of canthaxanthin at a molecular level are observed at much lower concentration of this pigment with respect to lipid (as low as 0.05 mol%). An analysis of the molecular interactions of canthaxanthin showed molecular mechanisms such as: strong van der Waals interactions between the canthaxanthin molecule and the acyl chains of lipids, restrictions to the segmental molecular motion of lipid molecules, modifications of the surface of the lipid membranes, effect on the membrane thermotropic properties and finally interactions based on the formation of the hydrogen bonds. Such interactions can lead to a destabilization of the membrane and loss of membrane compactness. In the case of the retinal vasculature, it can lead to an increase in the permeability of the retinal capillary walls and the development of retinopathy.

The purpose of serving a prison sentence is not isolating but inducing the perpetrators of crimes to refrain from committing offences in the future. This is possible when there are positive changes in their attitudes, and in particular when they create a need to respect the legal order and a sense of responsibility for their actions. For this purpose, in addition to other means of influence such as work, education, social contacts, cultural and educational activities and sports, or therapy, it is proposed to the detainees to participate in group resocialization programs. The article presents an example of resocialization program dedicated to convicted juveniles entitled “Butterfly Effect”. It presents the theoretical foundations of the program, the spectrum of objectives and results, the methods to achieve them, and scenario activities.

This paper analyses the complexity of family life, which includes both its charismatic and institutional aspects. Deepening the understanding of this basic social group can be useful in explaining how human beings in their decisions and actions, as well as organizations, unceasingly transcend different oppositions and dimensions. Undertaking this topic is not only important in the context of understanding the fundamental and complex experience of family life in the process of preparing and introducing new members to society, but also from the organizational perspective. It means that exploring the role of both dimensions – charismatic and institutional – which are somehow complementary, is crucial for understanding and harmonizing the different relationships and interactions within organizations, including business ones. In this way the article shows the connection between the functioning of the family and society (including organizations within it).

This paper presents the results of the study on structure and magnetic properties of the perovskite-type (BiFeO3)x-(BaTiO3)1-x solid solutions. The samples differing in the chemical composition (x = 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7) were produced according to the conventional solid-state sintering method from the mixture of powders. Moreover, three different variants of the fabrication process differing in the temperatures and soaking time were applied. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were collected and compared for the set of the investigated materials. The structural transformation from rhombohedral to cubic symmetry was observed for the samples with x = 0.7. With increasing of BaTiO3 concentration Mössbauer spectra become broadened refl ecting various confi gurations of atoms around 57Fe probes. Moreover, gradual decreasing of the average hyperfi ne magnetic fi eld and macroscopic magnetization were observed with x decreasing.
