    The problem of the body-soul separation has long been the subject of both philosophy and science. There is no doubt that man is a biological being. What is not certain is how human biology influences our actions and decision processes. Does it constitute humanity or is it just an excess. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Arnold Gehlen, who laid the foundations of the institutional theory, stated that man is a being marked by a deficiency. This statement was derived precisely from man’s biological deficiencies. At the same time, those influenced the human’s ability to create complex institutional systems. From the biological foundations of the analysis of man as a psychophysical being, Gehlen derived the need to establish a system of rules and norms that helps us to survive. This article will primarily discuss the biological foundations of Gehlen's theory. It will show how this 20th century anthropologist moved from researching the biological aspects of individuals to the cultural challenges faced by modern humans.

    Starting by the very fact that Mark Granovetter’s notion of “social embeddedness” became very successful by establishing new economic sociology in the 1980s yet it is argued that current economic sociology needs to work on a stronger connection to institutional arguments. It is shown that this can be based on new theoretical developments by linking micro and macro level. This article reconstructs Granovetter’s attempt of working within an action-based framework that has strong ties to the work of MaxWeber as well as to some parts of new institutionalism. The particularity of Granovetter’s approach is seen in his assumption that individuals’ interests as well as their economic actions are socially embedded in “networks of social interactions” that influence the economic outcome. With regard to Max Weber and new institutionalism, it is then argued that Mark Granovetter omits to carefully consider both firstly how mutual expectations defined within social relations are affected by more general social expectations (the institutional framework) and secondly what kind of coordination problems are precisely solved by social relations through information or expectation. But this would be important for a more complex and more realistic picture of economy. Therefore, it is recommended to analyze the interplay of different social mechanisms-social capital, trust, legitimacy, hierarchy, social entrepreneurs-that work either through information in a network, group norms or generalized expectations in an wider institutional framework. In conclusion, a methodological suggestion is made by combining historical-empirical work with theoretical arguments.

    The subject of the text is the problem of the mind’s effect on the body in Margaret Wilson’s interpretation. Part I presents Margaret D. Wilson’s interpretation of the Cartesian dualism against the background of the debates on dualism conducted in Anglo-American philosophy as well as that of debates that were contemporary to Descartes. In Part II Descartes’ argument is presented for the distinction of the soul and the body on the basis of analysis of cogito (epistemological argument). In Part III the problem of the soul’s effect on the body is defined from the point of view of the conception of the role played by sensual perception. In the final chapter it is stated that Descartes’ position ranges from the Natural Institution Theory to the Co-extension Theory. Margaret D. Wilson herself is in favor of the former conception of the Cartesian understanding of the relation between the soul and the body, according to which sensual perception is an argument for the union of the soul and the body on the strength of the union instituted in a natural way by God. In the conclusion it is stated that the Natural Institution Theory – albeit not free from problems – is a more comprehensible explanation of the relations between the soul and the body, whereas by using the Co-extension Theory Descartes, even though he wants to ensure a close union of the soul and the body, does not give a clear solution, and what is more, he exposes his position to contradiction.

    The aim of this article is to introduce the theoretical basis of regional security and the functioning of regional security institutions in the light of international relations. The article includes: consideration of definitional aspects of international security of a state and regional security, criteria of regional security, approaches to the issue of security in selected theories in international relations as well as threads dedicated to their origin, evolution and current forms of activity of regional security institutions. The conclusion of the article indicates that the sources of cooperation in the area of regional security can be perceived in two ways: firstly, as a result of the natural desire of states to cooperate with each other, striving for regional integration, and the expression of the identity and regional culture. Secondly, primarily in the effect of states' endeavors to obtain hegemony in the region, the desire to protect sources of security diversification, and finally the result of the belief that collective action can be more effective in countering threats and mitigating effects of the weakness of nation states in the anarchic international environment.

    Game theory can be viewed as an important contribution to multi-agent modeling, with widespread applications in economics and other social sciences. This paper presents two distinct approaches to extending – sociologizing – classical game theory: firstly, a system/institutional approach – social science game theory (SGT), and secondly, Erving Goffman’s interactionist approach (I-game theory). The two approaches are presented and compared; they are also contrasted with the classical theory. The article ends by concluding that due to the social science game theory, sociologists and social scientists are no longer forced into the classical straightjacket with its hyper-rationality, anomic players, and the absence of any social fabric (institutional and cultural formations). Moreover, the new game theory offers a reliable toolbox of social science concepts and methods for describing, analyzing, and explaining highly diverse interaction phenomena. We claim that those two approaches have already proved themselves useful for investigating and modeling a variety of interaction processes including cooperation, conflict, and negotiation.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest rekonstrukcja kontekstu powstania, dokonanie charakterystyki i wskazanie głównych założeń teorii instytucji M. Hauriou jako jednego z najbardziej wyczerpujących i spójnych przykładów instytucjonalizmu prawnego. Artykuł prezentuje, przy wykorzystaniu metody krytycznej analizy tekstów źródłowych, podstawowe elementy definicji instytucji wraz z jej ontologicznymi i epistemologicznymi założeniami dotyczącymi pojęcia prawa i metodologii badań prawniczych. Druga część artykułu przedstawia krytyczny wkład teorii M. Hauriou w odniesieniu do wybranych podstawowych pojęć prawa publicznego i konstytucyjnego jako sprzeciw wobec tradycyjnych, normatywistycznych i pozytywistycznych ujęć konstytucjonalizmy. Prace Hauriou, pomimo ich istotnego znaczenia jako pośrednie źródło inspiracji dla współczesnych doktryn pluralizmu konstytucyjnego, nie są prawie w ogóle przedmiotem dyskursu europejskiej nauki prawa. Ostatnia część artykułu została zatem poświęcona wybranym uwagom dotyczącym aktualności teorii instytucji ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wyzwań związanych z postępującą pluralizacją porządków prawnych.
    The aim of this paper aims is to reconstruct the original context, the characteristics and the main assumptions of M. Hauriou’s theory of the institution as one of the most coherent and comprehensive examples of legal institutionalism. By means of critical source analysis, the paper presents the basic elements of the notion of the institution together with its ontological and epistemological assumptions concerning both the very concept of law and legal methodology. The second part of the paper presents the critical approach expressed in Hauriou’s theory towards some core concepts of public and constitutional law by opposition to traditional, normativist and positivist approaches to constitutionalism. Hauriou’s work, despite its importance as indirect inspiration for contemporary doctrines of constitutional pluralism, is nowadays barely present in European legal science discourse. The last part of the paper is therefore dedicated to some closing remarks on current relevance of the theory of the institution with particular focus on the challenges of increasing pluralism of legal orders.

    W niniejszym artykule autor chce pokazać, że igrzyska olimpijskie są instytucją społeczną, która tworzy i reprodukuje pewne wzory oraz reguły zachowań. Proponuje definicję instytucji społecznej w kontekście igrzysk olimpijskich. Instytucja igrzysk olimpijskich narzuca ramy działania aktorów społecznych (zbiorowych i jednostkowych). Ponadto, instytucja igrzysk olimpijskich funkcjonuje w pięciu polach (w pięciu kontekstach): społecznym, ekonomicznym, politycznym, kulturowym i komunikacyjnym. W niniejszym artykule pokazane są powiązania wybranych kontekstów z igrzyskami. Autorka odnosi się także do pojęcia strategicznego pola działania oraz usytuowania go w systemie pól instytucjonalnych, które proponują Neil Fligstein i Doug McAdam
    In this article I present the Olympic Games as a social institution that creates and reproduces certain patterns and rules of behavior. I propose a definition of a social institution in the context of the Olympic Games. The Olympic institution imposes the framework for the action of social actors (collective and individual). In addition, the olympic institution co-operates in five fields (five contexts): social, economic, political, cultural and communicative. This article shows the links of selected contexts to the Olympic Games. I refer to the concept of strategic action field and its placement in the institutional field system proposed by Neil Fligstein and Doug McAdam.

    The article presents fragments of the text by Antoni Wincenty Kwiatkowski (1890-1970) „Theory of psychosphere and its bibliological method” signed with his alias Antoni Starodworski, and being stored in the Hoover Institution Archives, Stanford Unviersity. This is a synthetic monography of a book culture in the USSR in the 20-30s of the 20th century. In the author’s interpretation, theory and practice of book studies agreed with marxist-lenninism ideology was a system of social engineering serving communist indoctrination, upbringing “a Soviet man” (homo sovieticus), as well as development of the communist society and the USSR.

    Wyznaczenie funkcji ochronnej norm procedury przedsądowej w sprawach o świadczenia emerytalno-rentowe w oparciu o cel i zakres norm jest nie tylko możliwe, ale i konieczne dla szerszego rozumienia ubezpieczeń społecznych. Kontekst prawnoteleologiczny odgrywa tu rolę wyznacznika pożądanego przez ustawodawcę celu normy prawnej i pozwala na wskazanie przykładowych instytucji, które, powołane przez ustawodawcę, realizują funkcję ochronną. Dokonując badania norm przez pryzmat psychologicznej teorii prawa, wyraźnie widać, że prawo ubezpieczeń społecznych jest zjawiskiem psychicznym i należy je poddać wielopłaszczyznowemu badaniu, które uwidoczni zamierzony cel ustawodawcy. Funkcja ochronna realizowana jest także przez określony model procedury z precyzyjnie wyznaczonymi granicami funkcji. Z socjologicznej perspektywy istotny jest także cel niepożądany, niezamierzony przez ustawodawcę, jaki wywołują normy realizujące funkcję ochronną, a jaki uwidacznia się z przeprowadzonej analizy.
    Determining the protective function of the norms of the pre-trial procedure in cases of pension and retirement benefits based on the aim and scope of the norms is not only possible but also necessary for a wider understanding of social insurance. The legal and teleological context plays the role of a determinant of the aim of a legal norm desired by the legislator and allows for the indication of exemplary institutions which, established by the legislator, perform a protective function. When norms are being examined through the prism of the psychological theory of law they show that social security law is a psychological phenomenon and should be subjected to a multidimensional study that will reveal the intended aim of the legislator. The protective function is also performed by a specific procedure model with the precisely defined boundaries of the function. From the sociological perspective, an undesirable goal is also important, unintended by the legislator, which is caused by the norms fulfilling the protective function, and which is visible from the conducted analysis
