Opis:
Recently, we have witnessed an infusion of calculating models based on models offered by nature, models with more or less fidelity to the original that have led to the development of various problem-solving computational procedures. Starting from the observation of natural processes at the macroscopic or microscopic level, various methods have been developed. Technological progress today allows the accelerated reproduction of natural phenomena in the laboratory, which is why a new niche has arisen in the landscape of nature-inspired methods. This niche is devoted to the emulation of artificial biological processes in computational problem-solving methods. This paper proposes a novel approach, which is to develop novel computational methods in the field of Natural Computing based on the semi-natural process, namely Directed Evolution. In the first step we explain Directed Evolution, defined as the artificial reproduction of the process of evolution in the laboratory in order to obtain performing biological entities. For computer scientists, this provide a strong source of inspiration in the search for efficient methods of optimization. The computational model that proposed here largely overlaps with the Directed Evolution protocol, and the results obtained in the numerical experiments confirm the viability of such techniques inspired by processes which are more artificial than natural. The paper describes a novel general algorithm, inspired by Directed Evolution, which is able to solve different optimization problems, such as single optimization, multiobjective optimization and combinatorial optimization problems.

Opis:
We have two motivations. Firstly, semantic gap is a tough problem puzzling almost all sub-fields of Artificial Intelligence. We think semantic gap is the conflict between the abstractness of high-level symbolic definition and the details, diversities of low-level stimulus. Secondly, in object recognition, a pre-defined prototype of object is crucial and indispensable for bi-directional perception processing. On the one hand this prototype was learned from perceptional experience, and on the other hand it should be able to guide future downward processing. Human can do this very well, so physiological mechanism is simulated here. We utilize a mechanism of classical and non-classical receptive field (nCRF) to design a hierarchical model and form a multi-layer prototype of an object. This also is a realistic definition of concept, and a representation of denoting semantic. We regard this model as the most fundamental infrastructure that can ground semantics. Here a AND-OR tree is constructed to record prototypes of a concept, in which either raw data at low-level or symbol at high-level is feasible, and explicit production rules are also available. For the sake of pixel processing, knowledge should be represented in a data form; for the sake of scene reasoning, knowledge should be represented in a symbolic form. The physiological mechanism happens to be the bridge that can join them together seamlessly. This provides a possibility for finding a solution to semantic gap problem, and prevents discontinuity in low-order structures.

This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of basic feature selection (FS) methods that have originated from nature-inspired (NI) meta-heuristics; two well-known filter-based FS methods are also included for comparison. The performances of the considered methods are compared on four balanced highdimensional and real-world text data sets regarding the accuracy, the number of selected features, and computation time. This study differs from existing studies in terms of the extent of experimental analyses that were performed under different circumstances where the classifier, feature model, and term-weighting scheme were different. The results of the extensive experiments indicated that basic NI algorithms produce slightly different results than filter-based methods for the text FS problem. However, filter-based methods often provide better results by using lower numbers of features and computation times.

In an era of decreasing number of discoveries of conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, in the global oil and gas industry we can observe growing interest in unconventional resources. Conducting effective production from this type of reservoirs is associated with carrying out the intensification processes of production, among which hydraulic fracturing is the most popular. Fracturing project design consist of several technological parameters, i.e. the type of fracturing fluid and quantity of proppant, which have a direct impact on the process effectiveness. The actual shape of the fracture is difficult to predict due to the local heterogeneity of the reservoir and the superposition of the phenomena occurring during stimulation treatment. In this paper optimization model was proposed, which allows for selection appropriate parameters of fracturing technology. Developed optimization algorithm is based on two-dimensional PKN fracture model and Cinco-Ley analytical method. Optimization method used in this paper based on nature - inspired algorithms which were compared with gradient method.

Biologically inspired computing that looks to nature and biology for inspiration is a revolutionary change to our thinking about solving complex computational problems. It looks into nature and biology for inspiration rather than conventional approaches. The Human Immune System with its complex structure and the capability of performing pattern recognition, self-learning, immune-memory, generation of diversity, noise tolerance, variability, distributed detection and optimisation - is one area that has been of strong interest and inspiration for the last decade. An air conditioning system is one example where immune principles can be applied. This paper describes new computational technique called Artificial Immune System that is based on immune principles and refined for solving engineering problems. The presented system solution applies AIS algorithms to monitor environmental variables in order to determine how best to reach the desired temperature, learn usage patterns and predict usage needs. The aim of this paper is to explore the AIS-based artificial intelligence approach and its impact on energy efficiency. It will examine, if AIS algorithms can be integrated within a Smart Air Conditioning System as well as analyse the impact of such a solution.

Evolutionary multi-agent systems (EMAS) are very good at dealing with diffi cult, multi-dimensional problems. Research is currently underway to improve this algorithm, giving agents even more freedom not only to solve the problem, but also to make decisions about the behavior of the algorithm. One way is to hybridize this algorithm with other existing algorithms to create the Hybrid Evolutionary Multi Agent-System (HEMAS). Unfortunately, such connections generate problems in the form of unbalanced agent energy levels. One solution is to use an agent energy redistribution operator. The article presents three different proposals for such redistribution operators, compared them with each other and selected the best based on the results of numerous experiments.

This article presents Artificial Life, an interdisciplinary field of study that helps understand life on Earth (life as we know it) and other, possible kinds of life (as it could be). Artificial Life research builds models of life and synthesizes related phenomena and processes in all currently available media – software, hardware and wetware. The first part of this work focuses on Artificial Life as a research field. In the second part, three exemplary computer science algorithms are shown that are inspired by biological processes. These are evolutionary and coevolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence and ant algorithms, and artificial immune systems. The final part of this work provides a number of reflections on the goals of Artificial Life research, human nature and limitations, and our problems with evaluating complex outcomes of digital life experimentation.

This paper presents developments in the area of brain-inspired wireless communications relied upon in dense wireless networks. Classic approaches to network design are complemented, firstly, by the neuroplasticity feature enabling to add the learning ability to the network. Secondly, the microglia ability enabling to repair a network with damaged neurons is considered. When combined, these two functionalities guarantee a certain level of fault-tolerance and self-repair of the network. This work is inspired primarily by observations of extremely energy efficient functions of the brain, and of the role that microglia cells play in the active immune defense system. The concept is verified by computer simulations, where messages are transferred through a dense wireless network based on the assumption of minimized energy consumption. Simulation encompasses three different network topologies which show the impact that the location of microglia nodes and their quantity exerts on network performance. Based on the results achieved, some algorithm improvements and potential future work directions have been identified.

Opis:
This study examines the way in which the Neoplatonic philosopher Proclus treats an episode of the dialectic communication between Socrates and Alcibiades in the Platonic dialogue Alcibiades I. More specifically, it refers to how the characteristics and the choices of two different types of lovers – the divinely inspired one and the vulgar one – are displayed in the aforementioned text. The characterization ‘divinely inspired lover’ befits a person who communicates in a pure way with his beloved one and attempts to teach the latter the objective values of the intellect. By contrast, the characterization of the ‘vulgar lover’ befits that individual that approaches another individual exclusively on the basis of his external beauty. The first type of lover is presented within the realms of the permanently qualitative, while the second as someone who satisfies solemnly his subjectivity and his instincts. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that Proclus argues that Socrates, whom he considers to represent the very definition of a divinely inspired lover, is inspired by divine powers and attempts to act towards to his fellows – in this instance to Alcibiades – in the way through which the divine providence is revealed.

5G is a fifth-generation wireless technology that enables extremely fast data transfers and massive connection capacity. Existing Mobile health technology requires more reliable connection power and data transfer rates. The purpose of this research is to design, analyse, and compare the performance of a bio-inspired lotus-shaped microstrip patch antenna array with two to three radiating elements. The proposed antenna utilizes proximity coupled indirect microstrip transmission line feeding technique operating in the 24 GHz-30 GHz frequency band. The results indicate that performance continues to improve as the number of radiating elements increases. Moreover, each radiating element is loaded with complementary and non-complementary split-ring resonators (SRRs). The performance of the proposed microstrip antenna array is then analysed and compared with and without split-ring resonators. The findings validate that the proposed bio-inspired metamaterial-based microstrip patch array antenna is more reliable and performs better than an antenna without SRRs.

A study branch that mocks-up a population of network of swarms or agents with the ability to self-organise is Swarm intelligence. In spite of the huge amount of work that has been done in this area in both theoretically and empirically and the greater success that has been attained in several aspects, it is still ongoing and at its infant stage. An immune system, a cloud of bats, or a flock of birds are distinctive examples of a swarm system. In this study, two types of meta-heuristics algorithms based on population and swarm intelligence - Multi Swarm Optimization (MSO) and Bat algorithms (BA) – are set up to find optimal solutions of continuous non-linear optimisation models. In order to analyze and compare perfect solutions at the expense of performance of both algorithms, a chain of computational experiments on six generally used test functions for assessing the accuracy and the performance of algorithms, in swarm intelligence fields are used. Computational experiments show that MSO algorithm seems much superior to BA.

This paper concerns efficient parameters tuning (meta-optimization) of a state-of-the-art metaheuristic, Quantum-Inspired Genetic Algorithm (QIGA), in a GPU-based massively parallel computing environment (NVidia CUDATMtechnology). A novel approach to parallel implementation of the algorithm has been presented. In a block of threads, each thread transforms a separate quantum individual or different quantum gene; In each block, a separate experiment with different population is conducted. The computations have been distributed to eight GPU devices, and over 400× speedup has been gained in comparison to Intel Core i7 2.93GHz CPU. This approach allows efficient meta-optimization of the algorithm parameters. Two criteria for the meta-optimization of the rotation angles in quantum genes state space have been considered. Performance comparison has been performed on combinatorial optimization (knapsack problem), and it has been presented that the tuned algorithm is superior to Simple Genetic Algorithm and to original QIGA algorithm.

Trzeci z cyklu Odnalezione w krajobrazie artykuł publikowany w „inAW Journal – Multidisciplinary Academic Magazine” prezentuje wyniki badań dotyczących sposobu inspiracji elementami natury w wybranych realizacjach architektonicznych. W wyniku analizy powyższych cech sklasyfikowane zostały trzy drogi inspiracji: nawiązanie do wyglądu zewnętrznego, zastosowanie zasady działania oraz jednoczesne nawiązanie i podważanie cech immanentnych obiektu inspiracji.
The third article in the series Found in the Landscape published in the „inAW Journal – Multidisciplinary Academic Magazine” presents the results of research on sources of inspiration by elements of nature in selected architectural projects. Buildings designed in the last decade by Japanese architectural offices have been characterized in terms of idea, structure, quality of architecture, taking into account the biophilic features described in the previous issue of the journal, as well as differentiated perceptions of users. As a result of the analysis of the above-mentioned features, three types of inspiration have been classified: referring to the external appearance, applying the principle of operation , and at the same time referring to and undermining the inherent features of the object of inspiration.
