Opis:
Objectives: Good ventilation is more important in hospitals than in many other buildings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the condition, performance and modernity of ventilation systems on the perceived indoor air quality (IAQ) and the indoor air-related symptoms of hospital personnel. Materials and Methods: An inspection and evaluation graded on a 1 to 3 scale of the condition, performance, and modernity of the ventilation systems was carried out in ten central hospitals in Finland. The perceived IAQ and the related symptoms were collected by means of an indoor air questionnaire survey among the workers in these hospitals. Results: The condition, performance and modernity of the ventilation systems were good in 40% of the hospitals included in the research and poor in another 40% of them. In hospitals where the majority of the ventilation systems were assessed to be good, the prevalence of the indoor air-related complaints and symptoms was lower than in hospitals where the majority of the ventilation systems were assessed as needing extensive repairs. Conclusions: The condition and performance of the ventilation systems in hospitals had a significant impact on the perceived IAQ and the symptoms observed among the employees in Finnish hospitals. Therefore, it is important that hospital ventilation systems are maintained properly and regularly. Furthermore, they should be renovated, at the latest when their technical lifespan expires.

Opis:
Badania przeprowadzono w pomieszczeniach przeznaczonych na czasowy pobyt ludzi: w pokojach biurowych i punktach kserograficznych zlokalizowanych na terenie miasta Lublina. Badania stężenia ozonu w powietrzu wewnętrznym przeprowadzone zostały w dwóch okresach: w okresie letnim i w sezonie grzewczym. Próbki do badań pobierano metodą pasywną.
Ozone is the common component of indoor air. Because of its high reactivity it plays an important role in forming of indoor air quality, which influence directly on health of interior occupants. It is a well-known fact, that ozone can damage the respiratory system, inflames and irritates respiratory tissues, and can worsen asthmatic symptoms in individuals with asthma. Ozone exposure can produce symptoms such as coughing, chest tightness and impaired breathing. Elevated exposures have the potential to induce permanent lung damage, and even increase the risk of premature death in persons with poor health. Hence, there is a need to measure the concentrations of ozone in indoor air environments. The indoor ozone concentration depends on the outdoor ozone concentrations, the rate at which indoor air is exchanged with outdoor air, interior air circulation, indoor sources of ozone (eg ozone generators, electrostatic air cleaners, photocopiers, and laser printers), the rate at which ozone is removed by indoor surfaces, and reactions between ozone and other chemicals in the air. The objective of this study was to examine ozone concentrations in indoor air in selected non-occupational environments: office rooms and Xerox service points. Summer time and cold (heating) season was examined. Samples were collected using passive method. The ozone concentration on summer time was within the range of 0.04-K).01 mg/m3 for office rooms and 0.008-0.176 mg/m3 for Xerox points. In two examined Xerox places the permitted level of ozone (0.15 mg/m3) was exceeded in summer time. In cold time the permitted level of ozone was not exceeded in any Xerox points. hi offices rooms the permitted level of ozone was not achieved.

The paper deals with the subject of increasing the efficiency of air purification in ventilation systems in situations of unusual hazardous indoor air pollutants. It analyzes possible locations of additional filtering and sterilizing elements in the installation to eliminate their return to the rooms. The quantities of pollutants in particular parts of the system were determined for a given fan configuration in the air handling unit and a possible leakage in the heat recovery system. Guidelines were proposed for the design and construction of systems to enable rapid modification of systems in the event of unusual contamination or pathogens in the indoor air.

W kurzu najczęściej spotykanymi bakteriami były pałeczki Gram-dodatnie. Większość należała do rodzaju Bacillus.
Dust particles collected from indoor environments may contain hundreds of chemically and biologically active components, which can cause many adverse health effects and deterioration of building materials. While all types of microorganisms can cause problems indoors, bacteria and fungi are most commonly associated with indoor air quality complaints. Some of them produce mucus and excrete chemicals which can provoke allergy, respiratory system and skin irritation, headache, or fatigue. This study was designed to obtain information about characterization of the microbial community in settled dust samples from indoor environments of the Lublin area. Dust samples were collected from households and educational establishments. Microbial species and their concentrations were determined by culture analysis. The concentrations and proportions of morphologically distinguishable culturable bacteria and fungi in dust samples was as follows. In case of bacteria the most commonly found were Gram-positive rods, predominantly Bacillus spp. (Bacillus subtillis) and cocci - genus Micrococcus (Micrococcus leutus) and Staphylococcus. Fungi were represented by genus Aspergillus (mainly Aspergillus nigerii), Penicillium, and Cladosporium. Additionally, microbial concentrations of similar environments vary between sample types, eg total amount of fungi has been higher in dust from textile covered floor than in samples from bare floor.

Opis:
Introduction. Population increasingly draws attention to the issues concerning the environment degraded by the progress of civilization and the impact of this process on health. However, public awareness of the risk exposure to indoor contaminants is lagging a long way behind knowledge regarding outdoor environmental hazards. The aim of the study was to assess the risk perception related to exposure to indoor environmental factors in the population of Silesia. Materials and methods. In this study the electronic version of a questionnaire survey – downloaded on the website www.moja-ankiety.pl. was used. During the 3-months duration of the project 552 subjects participated in the survey. In the study participated the Silesian Voivodeship inhabitants such as chat rooms users, newsgroups and online forum participants. Data analysis was performed by using statistical program – STATA Version 8 SE [9], where the Kruskall-Wallis test and χ 2 test were applied. Statistical significance was assessed at p value *0.05. Results. Despite the low perception of environmental health hazards inside the dwellings, the majority of respondents were able to indentify health effects and ways to reduce exposure to indoor air pollution. Both gender, place of residence, education level and age significantly affected the level of perception of respondents on the risk connected with exposure to indoor air pollution. Conclusion. It is necessary to continuously work on raising public awareness of environmental health hazards in confined spaces, the causes of their occurrence, types, effects and above all the ways to counter these threats.
Materiały i metody. Wnioski. Koniecznym jest stałe podnoszenie społecznej świadomości dotyczącej środowiskowych zagrożeń zdrowia w pomieszczeniach zamkniętych, przyczyn ich powstawania, rodzajów, skutków i przede wszystkim sposobów zwalczania tych zagrożeń.

Objectives: Airborne particle concentrations can be used as quality indicators of indoor environments. The previous lack of reference data has limited the use of particle measurements in offi ce environments. The aim of this study was to describe the concentrations of airborne particles (≥ 0.5 μm and ≥ 5.0 μm) in 122 Finnish offi ce buildings with suspected indoor air problems. Materials and Methods: The database consisted of indoor air and supply air particle samples collected in 2001–2006 from the Helsinki area. The particle concentrations (≥ 0.5 μm and ≥ 5.0 μm) were measured in the indoor air (528 samples from 122 offi ce rooms) and in the supply air (384 samples from 105 offi ce rooms) with an optical particle counter. Airborne particle concentrations ≥ 0.5 μm were categorized according to the effi ciency of supply air fi ltration and health survey data. Results: The mean concentrations in the indoor air equaled 1900 particles/l and in the supply air 1300 particles/l. The effi ciency of supply air fi ltration decreased the fi ne particles counts in both the indoor and supply air. The counts of large particles, ≥ 5.0 μm, were low in the indoor air. Airborne counts of ≥ 0.5 μm particles (geometric mean) were statistically higher in the offi ces whose occupants had work-related symptoms (eye and/or upper respiratory symptoms or upper respiratory infections) than in the offi ces whose occupants had no such symptoms. However, the symptoms may also be linked to other indoor air problems or particle characteristics not studied in this work. Conclusions: This study indicates typical airborne particle levels (≥ 0.5 μm and ≥ 5.0 μm) in Finnish offi ce buildings with suspected indoor air problems. The results can be used to evaluate the quality of indoor environment, possible indoor air problems, and the need for additional investigations.

Opis:
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are additive flame retardants which have found applications in polymers for many consumer plastic and electronic goods. Wide use of these chemicals has led to their extremely high concentrations in the indor environments. This paper presents an exploratory study of the photodebromination of five individual lower polybrominated diphenyl ether congeners (BDE-28, BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100 and BDE-101) irradiated with white light and different UV (A, B, C) light ranges. The capability of photodegradation of lower PBDEs under room lights was proven by the debromination which occurred with various effectiveness for the selected PBDE congeners and depended of light source. Almost all PBDE congeners showed the greatest decay when exposed to UV-C, with the exception of BDE-100. The decay of irradiated congeners occurred rapidly during the first 5 min of experiment. The final degradation varied from 38% decay (BDE-28, UV-C) to 94% (BDE-47, UV-C). These findings can help in predicting PBDE behavior in indoors and also be useful in the design of PBDE remediation processes.

Opis:
This paper discusses the importance of indoor air quality and indicates its relation with outdoor air quality in the area of spa treatment. Significant factors and sources causing indoor air pollution by particulate matter and radon are considered. Particular attention is drawn to specific functions of health resorts in spa treatment in the context of the importance of indoor and outdoor air for patients staying in the resorts. It is underlined the specificity of health resorts providing treatment for patients classified as the group most sensitive to air pollution, i.e. people with chronic respiratory diseases. The study comprised measurements of 24-h concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and 10-minute instantaneous concentrations of radon-222 (222Rn) from February 5 to February 25, 2021 in a treatment room of one of the Polish spas located in Lower Silesia. The analysis of interactions between the concentrations of two fractions of particulates PM10 and PM2.5 was presented. The interaction and dependence of factors affecting the elevated values of concentrations of the studied pollutants were discussed. The presented analyses showed that the concentrations of the studied pollutants were influenced by air exchange and air infiltration from outside to inside. In the case of short-term measurements of 222Rn activity concentration in the air, it was found that the observed changes in hourly concentrations of 222Rn are analogous to those observed in residential buildings. For the specific time intervals, the variation of PM concentrations and 222Rn activity concentration was found to be similar.
