Opis:
This article deals with the exclusion of deaf, hearing- and speech-impaired people from our modern communication society, as they are unable to use the phone. This situation leads to discrimination and disadvantages in their everyday lives. One solution to this problem is the implementation of so-called relay centers which act as go-betweens; with the aid of communications assistants and interpreters, a direct conversation with a hearing person becomes possible. The Center for Sign Language and Deaf Communication has developed a concept of such a relay center for Austria. The main innovations are the integrative technological approach (trying to integrate all possible communication devices) and the embedding into an Internet portal, including additional services for the target groups. An overview of the activities carried out during the 6-month preparatory project is given, and the results are described.

Do badań wykorzystano wybrane próby z Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale (9 prób), test koordynacji wolnej, step test, skale bólu VAS oraz kwestionariusz zawierający kilka pytań własnych.
Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic arthropathy of developmental age. According to the criteria of the International League Against Rheumatism, JIA is arthritis with the onset before the age of 16 and lasting at least 6 weeks. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess balance and motor coordination of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on a group of 68 people. The test group consisted of 34 patients treated at the inpatient rehabilitation unit in the Regional Education and Treatment Centre for Children and Youth (Regionalny Ośrodek Rehabilitacyjno- Edukacyjny dla Dzieci i Młodzieży) in Rzeszów, whereas the control group included 34 children from the School Complex in Niechobrz. Chosen tests from Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale (9 tests), slow coordiction test, step test, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and a questionnaire containing some questions prepared by the authors’ were used in the study. The results were statistically analyzed using Student’s t-test and Mann Whitney p-U test. Results: In the test group 24 children suffered from oligoarthritis and 10 from polyarticular arthritis. T-test analysis revealed that children with JIA had lower average in 7 tests in Fullerton test as well as in the tests evaluating rapidand slow coordination in comparison to healthy children. Patients with polyarticular arthritis obtained much worse results in Fullerton and coordination tests. When two or more joints in the lower limb were affected, it resulted in problems with performing turn round, tandem gait, standing on one leg with eyes closed and step test. Pain above 4 in VAS caused worse performance of the subjects in Fullerton and coordination tests than in case of children who rated their pain 3 or less. Conclusions: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis affected the balance and motor coordination of children. The deterioration of balance and motor coordination in children with JIA was influenced in a statistically significant way by the type of disease, the number of joints affected and pain perception.

Opis:
The presented study aims at the identifi cation of these mechanisms in the area of integrated education as well as at showing possible consequences for educational practice and the development of disabled learners. The first is related to the biological model of disability, which is determined by the notion of physiological norm and for which organism impairment is a constitutive feature. What ranks as priority in the second standpoint are special educational needs treated as a derivative of functional disorders. This point of view is particularly visible in some psychological definitions presenting disability as individual functional disorders. The last perspective of viewing the disabled learner which is discussed here is situated in the assumptions of constructivism. Each of the presented standpoints allows for slightly different handling of the disabled learner’s school problems. In the presented article, the discussed issues are rooted in the last – constructivist approach.

Opis:
ntroduction: Lower limb amputation is a surgery performed as a last resort, when all other therapeutic options have been exhausted. The duration of treatment lasts from a few to several months and depends on the extent of amputation, the patient's overall health and the course of the stump healing process. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using the database of the General and Vascular Surgery Ward of the Nikolay Pirogov Regional Specialist Hospital in Łódź. Patients who underwent lower limb amputation at the transfemoral level in 2017 were analyzed. 92 patients undergoing surgery were qualified for the study. Patients were divided into two groups: those with no healing complications and those with stump healing complications. Medical records of both groups were analyzed for risk factors for impaired healing. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Patients with impaired stump healing most often had minimal bleeding and higher ASA scores compared to patients without healing complications. No differences between the two groups were found for the remaining parameters. Patients with complications needed an average of 28 days to heal the wound and spent an average of 40 days in hospital, compared to 14 and 21 days, respectively, for patients without complications. The percentage of deaths in the group of patients with complications was also significantly higher (35%) than in the group of patients without complications (5%). Conclusions: Statistically significant factors increasing the risk of impaired stump healing include high ASA scale and minimal muscle bleeding during surgery. Patients who experienced this complication are at greater risk of prolonged hospitalization and death in the postoperative period. This study showed statistically significant risk factors for impaired stump healing following amputation and confirmed the negative impact of this complication on the length of hospitalization and risk of death.

The visually impaired person is created in the image of God, as is the person with normal vision. The impairment does not infringe on the dignity of the impaired. The impaired person is a fully-fledged subject, enjoying all the rights that relate to his/her belonging to the Church and society. The visually impaired are incorporated into the Church through Baptism. They undertake their Christian and personal vocation in the Church. The impairment makes the vocation of an impaired person unique. It is one of its kind and can me more difficult than that of a person with normal vision. The visually impaired are also called to participate in apostolic action – in the form they are fit for. Their apostolic activity mostly consists in giving the testimony of their Christian life, their acceptance of the suffering and devoting it to Christian causes, and in their prayer. The Church community offers them spiritual, psychological and material support.

The paper addresses the situation of sign language users (mostly deaf people) in the context of inclusion as a political goal. For several reasons, there is often still some confusion with the terms of deaf and hearing impaired. In order to overcome this confusion, a survey is given over the needs of people who have a sign language as their preferred language as well as the needs of people who decide on preferring spoken language (mostly hard-of-hearing people). One should also doubt that the whole target group of people with disabilities in the hearing area consists of two separate groups only. Starting from the right of self-determination, the better solution seems to be the individual right of a person to choose any offers which are useful for her/him. As for other groups of people with special needs, ICT is seen as a big chance for improving their situation in terms of life and job chances. Several projects and experiences are reported.

The present work discusses results concerning sound perception obtained in a pitch memorization experiment for blind and visually impaired subjects (children and teenagers). Listeners were divided into two age groups: 7–13 year olds and 14–18 year olds. The study tested 20 individuals (8 congenitally blind and 12 visually impaired) and 20 sighted persons comprising reference groups. The duration of the experiments was as short as possible due to the fact that our listeners were children. To date, no study has described results of such experiment for blind/visually handicapped children and teenagers. In the pitch memory experiment blind teenagers outperformed blind children and both age groups of visually impaired subjects in two out of three tested cases. These results may have implications for the development of auditory training in orientation and mobility of young visually handicapped people.

The blind and visually impaired are one of the groups prone to stigma. Stigma imposed by social environment may lead to self-stigma, that is expressing negative opinions about oneself as a result of the carried sigma. Self-stigma usually develops in three stages: first the stigmatised person realizes that they have been stereotyped, then they accept the stereotype and finally apply it to themselves. Thus, to develop selfstigma, the person has to be aware that they are perceived by the society in a stereotypical way (a blind person is usually perceived as passive, dependent and reliant on other people’s help), accept it and acknowledge themselves that this is their real image. Not every visually impaired person is will develop self-stigma. The article presents selected factors and preventive measures that may reduce the risk of self-stigma.

In addition to limiting the perception of sound stimuli, hearing impairment can affect human functioning in various spheres of life: including physical, mental, and social ones; at the same time, it might affect the development of communication and, above all, language skills as well. The results of scientific research briefly presented in the introductory part of this article report on the varying severity of these difficulties. Then, on the basis of the secondary literature, the principles of creating spoken and written texts are discussed. In the following part, the characteristic features of narrative forms of expression are listed, especially description, which is significantly different from the story. Next, the results of our own research on the ability to structure description based on the oral and written statements of 12 students with varying degrees of hearing loss are presented. Based on the collected material, it was noticed that the composition of written texts produced by the people with hearing disabilities are more thoughtful, more complex and more complete, although they also contain stylistic and linguistic errors. A significant number of people also used such sentences which clearly finish and/or summarise their descriptions. Spoken texts are short and concise, which is most noticeable in listing the distinctive elements or parts of a provided illustration, or individual features of one’s appearance. There are also fewer texts in which the emotions of travellers are noticed and described. Single sentences and extended single sentences prevail. Moreover, features typical of spoken language are present as well. Finally, there are some difficulties in building a compositionally and logically correct statement.

The article presents the results of research on the usefulness of specialized information and communication technologies (ICT) in mathematics education of visually impaired students. The aim of the research was to evaluate the benefits of using innovative technologies for both a teacher and his/her visually impaired student. Functionality and usability of proposed solutions were preliminarily evaluated. Possibility to create mathematical content available for both visually impaired and blind students in EPUB3 format was positively evaluated by all 20 surveyed teachers. At the same time, 19 teachers asked for the opinion about diverse educational tools supporting preparation of the class materials appreciated their value as significantly facilitating and time saving solutions. Vast majority of them (17) expressed the opinion that cubarithms improve the process of teaching and practicing arithmetic. Fifteen teachers stated that semantic interpretation of the formulas in Polish and the possibility to navigate easily through their structures are the factors that significantly accelerate the performance of visually impaired students. Remote desktop tool has been assessed as facilitating teacher-student cooperation both in-class and on-line. The teachers also claimed that proposed solutions may positively influence the effectiveness of mathematics education in heterogenic student group by accelerating and facilitating the didactic process. That in turn may be considered as a positive response to the challenge of inclusive education.
