Opis:
Aim. This research paper discusses the educational process of immigrant children in Lithuania with the intention to determine the integration trajectory most likely to be chosen by the immigrant students. Methods. The research methods include legal analysis of Lithuanian legislations related to immigration, immigrant integration and education, meta-analysis of previous research on immigrant integration into Lithuanian society as well as semi-structured interviews with experts of the field. Results. Having completed the research, the following conclusion has been drawn: immigrant children education in Lithuania does not tend to create conditions for successful integration and more often than not influences immigrant students to choose those integration paths that may inspire inner or outer conflict. This is due to the lack of integration policy and strategy at the state level as well as the tendency to create a cultural hierarchy wherein the Lithuanian culture is implicitly considered as above others. Practical application. The results of the research can be used to improve the conditions of immigrant children education in Lithuanian schools on the national level as well as by schools willing to foster the integration of immigrant students; the results can also be considered in the process of establishing integration policy on the state level.

Slovak education is still undergoing transformation changes. The changes are influenced by objective and subjective factors, provoking several questions, e.g. the ones concerning new objectives resulting from the need to improve the training of future teachers. Training of teachers for the first level of elementary schools of extraordinary importance has become. It is expected to reflect several current tasks connected with, for example, the migration of people in Europe as well as with the preparation for language competence.

Opis:
For several years, a growing number of foreigners have been seen in Poland. Interestingly, not only seasonal workers come to Poland, but according to Eurostat research, these are people who decide to stay permanently, buy apartments, start families. In the context of the globalization of culture, it is worth considering the state of Polish education, with a particular emphasis on the pre-school education. What can the state offer to children who learning Polish as a foreign/second? How do teachers find themselves in this new educational situation? Who is really a person working in a kindergarten: a teacher, a mentor, a guardian of identity, a speech therapist, a psychologist or just a companion? The work focuses on problems reported by kindergarten teachers as a result of contact with an immigrant student in kindergarten. The presented case studies will become an answer to the question about need for change in postmodern Europe.

Opis:
To understand transcultural education in societies with children from many cultural backgrounds, this essay looks at socialization in colonial-hierarchical settings and uses the analysis of cultural impositions to discuss consequences and needs in present-day immigration societies. The analysis begins with an historical approach to intercultural education. In a first section, focusing on British as well as French and Dutch colonies it analyses memories as reflected in life-writings of colonized resident children in schools run by in-migrant – “third-culture” – imperial administrators and teachers – a remote-control education. Present-day constructs of mono-cultural national values may be equally remote to the life-worlds of many-cultured societies. The second part traces the migration of imperially-educated students and working adults to the (former) colonizer core with India-to-England (late 19th to early 20th century) and Suriname-to-The Netherlands (1960s-2000s) as examples. In a third section, as an exemplary case for today’s multicultural cities, I discuss French-speaking university students from North and West Africa in Paris, i.e. migrant students facing a national/nation-centred/nationalist educational system. In a concluding part, I will interpret present-day Canada’s educational practices in terms of transcultural socialization. How did children and adolescents connect the "facts" learned in educational institutions to their everyday lives -- if they did so at all?

As early twentieth century Americans vigorously debated U.S. immigration policy and immigrants’ impact on the nation and its culture, leaders of American colleges and universities discussed among themselves the impact of immigrant students and students of immigrant parentage on the nation’s expanding higher education system. Although the development of ethnic and religious quotas in private elite institutions has been well documented, historians have paid relatively little attention to the way faculty and administrators at urban public institutions viewed students from immigrant families and their educational needs. This paper will show that professors and administrators in urban institutions, especially those that received public funding, expressed intense anxiety about students from immigrant homes.

“How Come We Don’t Deliver?” asks Elana Shohamy in the title of her paper on imagined multilingual schools and tackles the striking issue in education: the need for a paradigm shift towards a multilingual approach. This paper focuses on the role of immigrant teachers in this process. Based on the sociolinguistic framework of linguistic markets and the pedagogical framework of professionalization, it presents a qualitative study on teachers’ language beliefs. Using linguistic biographies, this study reconstructs how beliefs towards multilingualism emerge and develop under different educational settings. The findings indicate significant deviations in the perception of multilingualism and showcase deep insights into the development of these perceptions over time. The results reveal the importance of socio-political setting and contribute to a reflected understanding of linguistic diversity management in multilingual education and the need for teacher professionalization.

Opis:
Problems of children adaptation, acculturation and integration have been ignored or treated marginally in large literature devoted to migration process. This article discusses problems that children of immigrants in Poland are facing particularly in Polish school. The qualitative research (based on interviews) is focused on immigrant children attending Polish schools mainly in Warsaw and investigates both the perspectives of children themselves and of school as an institution. Different situations of emigration produce different types of challenges for the host country’s school methods and goals. The research presented here is mainly about the first two categories of people mentioned below: 1) children of diplomats and long term contract employees, whose stay in Poland is strictly determined, AND (2) children of economic migrants who choose between long term stay in Poland or further migration, or even when returning home. Their stay in Poland is an element of the individual life strategy of the family. The third group - (3) children of political refugees and persons who attempt to receive the legal status of political refugee. the conclusions of the article also may be of interest for researchers dealing with children of refugees. Poland became a relatively attractive country of immigration because of (1) its relative easy access, (2) relatively high standard of living, (3) its safety and (4) its high level of education.

Opis:
As Poland is becoming a more attractive destination for immigrants, Polish schools need to develop relevant solutions that can assist the integration of immigrant students into Polish society. The objective of this study is threefold. Firstly, the paper aims to discuss the role of schools in counteracting threats to societal security resulting from increased migration. Secondly, the study investigates immigration policy and educational solutions in Poland. Finally, we evaluate educational solutions implemented in schools to facilitate the integration of immigrant children, their safety, as well as discuss the difficulties and advantages resulting from the presence of foreign students in Polish schools. The study shows that schools play a special role in educating young people about societal values, personal safety and societal security. Educational solutions aiming at immigrant integration need to be investigated in the context of multidimensional legislation on immigration. The findings of the quantitative analysis relate to the solutions adopted by Polish schools that assist the integration of foreign students. They also shed light on the problems and benefits of having heterogeneous classes. Most schools in Poland offer foreign students a number of educational opportunities related to Polish language acquisition, academic performance (e.g. remedial lessons) and social integration. Inability to speak Polish is the greatest problem at schools, which is the root cause of other complex problems, such as foreign students’ falling behind with schoolwork, slower pace of the lesson, and discipline problems.

The article addresses the multifaceted issues of cultural diversity in contemporary Spain. Multiculturalism is perceived from the perspective of ethnic minorities and immigrant students in, mainly, compulsory schooling. Legal framework for the school system is followed by the description of inequalities in education. The aspect of segregation or even marginalization of immigrant alumni and their significantly lower achievement (after PISA reports), when compared to native peers, is strongly emphasized. A section dedicated to linguistic pluralism in the Autonomous Communities of Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, gives the way to the country's legal background, as regards cultural diversity. There are also considered the aspects of support through compensatory programmes in the classroom in the light of the policy of normalization.

The author is on the borderline of two generations: digital natives and digital immigrants. Thus, this paper presents the autoethnographic perspective of these two worlds as experienced by her. The first one, as Umberto Eco said, is a Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge world and is the analogue world of the book (BOOK). It is close to the author because of the fact of her educational experiences related to her childhood and youth. The other one is related to using the digital space or educational mobile applications, and is experienced by the author during didactic and research work at the University as well as during workshops she leads for school teachers of different educational stages. Combining these two worlds together gives food for thought and critical reflection on possibilities that are hidden in each of them as well as signalizing the potential risks they both pose.

Artykuł, zwracając uwagę na przemiany czytelnictwa, edukacji i historycznej pamięci, prezentuje stanowisko wyrażające potrzebę powrotu do klasycznych ścieżek edukacyjnych – dialogu i dyskusji o doświadczeniu czytelniczym.
The article presents opinions related to university literature teaching and the necessity (justified or not) of adapting teaching methods to the abilities of a modern recipient. It also concentrates on the problem with defining new generation of students, through the prism of digital technology. However, the fundamental issue to consider, is the problem of academic literary education, which often does not raise enthusiasm among students. Many of them are treating the subject as not practical enough. I also refer to my own teaching experience; expressing the point of view that literature defends itself, besides lacking strict rules of modern education and the need to diversify students discussions using innovative, activating methods. Its interpretation is, however, dependent on contemporary context. The article, notes the common change in reading, education and historical memory, presents the necessity of preserving traditional educational paths – focused on dialogue and discussion about the reader’s experience.

Tracing the process of immigrants' transition, it appears that in the twentieth century children of Eastern European, mainly Jewish immigrants were trying to get rid of the European past of their parents as quickly as possible in order to take the full advantage of American culture. This attitude brought serious changes in family values, social ties, and religious traditions among immigrants' children, which was vividly presented in Kazin's works. Moving straight toward their American future often meant leaving the Old World heritage and language behind. Many of the immigrant children regarded this type of attitude as another logical step in their development. But although this incorporation into the mainstream of the American culture was fruitful, some of them experienced a deep sense of irreversible loss over their past.
