Opis:
The theme of Russia occupies a special place in the works of Ivan Bunin. He turns to Russia throughout his literary activity. In exile, his forsaken homeland becomes a source of special inspiration for the author, and a main subject for the book of his stories Dark Alleys, where Bunin included his Late Hour. In this short story, the author recalls lost places in his native land. The motive of the journey is plot-forming and connects two layers, which interact in the narrative: the journey that happened in the real past, and an imaginary journey. Bunin describes this imaginary journey as if it is happening in reality. The routes of these two journeys include new loci as Suez Canal, Nile, Paris..., which indicates the importance of the idea of geo-poetics for the author. Recollections in Bunin’s story Late Hour come up to the Memory, which tramples death. It proves the resurrectional power of art.

Celem artykułu jest krótka analiza fenomenu XIX-wiecznej fotografii erotycznej o tematyce orientalistycznej w kategoriach antropologicznych. W miejsce dość oczywistych już uwag o nieprzystawalności haremowych fantazji Europejczyków do realiów życia na Bliskim Wschodzie zaprezentowane zostały potencjalne potrzeby, jakie spełniały te bardzo popularne w owym czasie przedstawienia. Pocztówki z inscenizacjami życia algierskich kobiet i fotografie pamiątkowe z komercyjnych atelier Kairu, Bejrutu i Stambułu dają nieoceniony wgląd w wyobraźnię seksualną pokolenia naszych przodków.
The paper briefly analyzes phenomenon of nineteenth-century erotic orientalist photography in anthropological terms. Its aim is to show potential needs that realize these popular representations instead of examining the rather obvious incomparability of harem fantasies into Middle Eastern reality. Postcards with staged images of everyday life of Algerian women and souvenir photographs taken in commercial atelier from Cairo, Beirut and Istanbul can give inestimable view of sexual imagination of our ancestor's generation.

The paper is aimed at describing the transgressive anthropological model of Leśmian’s late poetry. The research was inspired by poetic activities of the poet himself, who in his poem Zwiewność (Ethereality) created a new “mystical” poetic image, and then extracted an unusual material and metaphysical form of human existence from it. This work of poetic creation is turned in the article into the lens of imagination which allows to perceive adequately new radical forms of human existence and phenomena occurring in their creation, such as destruction, metamorphoses and transgressive fusion with the cosmos as well as the matter of this existence (rhythm and movement).  
Próba opisania transgresyjnego modelu antropologicznego późnych wierszy Leśmiana. W badaniu inspiracją stały się poetyckie działania samego poety, który w liryku Zwiewność stworzył nowy „mistyczny” obraz poetycki, a następnie wysnuł z niego niezwykłą, materialno-metafizyczną formę ludzkiego bytu. Z tego dzieła poetyckiej kreacji uczyniono w artykule wyobraźniową soczewkę, umożliwiającą adekwatny ogląd nowych radykalnych form ludzkiego bytu i wydarzających się w ich powstawaniu zjawisk – destrukcji, metamorfoz i transgresyjnego scalania z Kosmosem, a także materii owego bytu (rytmu i ruchu).

Szkic opisuje model mistycznej poezji polskiego romantyzmu. Analizy rozpoczęto od obrazu wizji mistycznej w Widzeniu Mickiewicza. Ukazano dalej znaczenie Liryków lozańskich, w których zostały stworzone transcendentne formy poetyckie oddające inność Bytu mistycznego. Następnie opisano, jak Słowacki rozwija te formy w poezji genezyjskiej, tworząc zespół technik poetyckich ujmujących różne aspekty świata transcendentnego. Zbadano w szkicu także najbardziej niezwykłe, apofatyczne zjawiska poezji Słowackiego wyprowadzające poetyckie poznanie poza Byt, w przestrzeń Boskiego Pra-gruntu bliskiego mistyce Böhmego i Mistrza Eckharta.
The article is an attempt to describe a model of mystical poetry in Polish Romanticism. The analysis begins with a look at the image of the mystical vision in Adam Mickiewicz’s poem − “Widzenie” [“The Vision”]. Next, the importance of the Lausanne poems, with their transcendent poetic forms that show the otherness of the mystical being, is presented. Afterwards, a description of how Słowacki develops these poetic forms in the genesis poetry is provided. Słowacki created a set of exceptional poetic techniques that present many aspects of the transcendent world. The most unusual, apophatic phenomena of Słowacki’s poetry were also examined. It has been shown how these late poetic forms lead poetic cognition outside of Being and into the space of the Divine Pre-Ground. These turn out to be close to the mysticism of Böhme and Eckhart

Marcel Łoziński, jeden z czołowych twórców polskiego filmu dokumentalnego, swoją autorską metodę nazwał „zagęszczaniem rzeczywistości”. Polegała ona na wprowadzeniu do filmowanego świata podstawionych przez siebie bohaterów, prowokowaniu rzeczywistości po to, by ujawnić jej charakterystyczne cechy, niewidoczne na pierwszy rzut oka bądź niedostępne dla kamery. Łoziński porównywał siebie do obserwatora akwarium, który zamiast czekać, aż coś się wydarzy, decyduje się nim potrząsnąć, wzbić piasek do góry, wywołać reakcję. Metoda Łozińskiego była jedną z pierwszych prób odejścia od kina obserwacyjnego, od metody cierpliwego oka. Współczesne kino dokumentalne coraz częściej rozwija podejście Łozińskiego i wręcz eksperymentuje z granicami gatunkowymi - tworząc kino pogranicza, filmowe hybrydy balansujące między dokumentem a fabułą. Prawdziwa fikcja 87 Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą usystematyzowania tego zjawiska na polskim gruncie i wpisania go w szerszą światową tendencję, której przedstawicielem jest choćby Joshua Oppenheimer (reżyser słynnej Sceny zbrodni) nazywający swoje filmy „dokumentami wyobraźni”.
Marcel Łoziński, one of the most important Polish documentary film directors, described his method of working as “densifying the reality”. It means that the director introduces into the real world and real situations actors whose role is to provoke the reality, discover its’ characteristic elements that are either invisible at first sight or unreachable to film with a camera. Łoziński compared himself to a person observing an aquarium, who instead of waiting until something happens, decides to shake the aquarium, provoke situations, cause reactions. Łoziński’s method was one of the first attempts to move away from strictly observational mode of documentary cinema. Directors of contemporary documentary films more and more often develop this approach even experimenting with the borders of a genre, creating hybrid films that blur the boundaries between documentary and fiction. This article is an attempt to describe different styles of hybrid films in Poland and compare them with international tendencies, such as what Joshua Oppenheimer (the author of “The Act of Killing”) calls the “documentary of imagination”.

Scientists and engineers create the scientific and technological knowledge to generate societal and individual wealth and related economic growth. The article explores wealth creation, worldwide research and development (R&D) expenditures, US R&D expenditures by business, government, and academic organizations and economic sectors, and profiles the US science and technology workforce including recruiting and compensation costs. The process of recruiting scientists and engineers is profiled. Many technology based companies are currently using artificial intelligence algorithms to assess applicants’ technology knowledge and select the optimal job candidate. Are there non-technical personality traits which are equally important in recruiting scientists’ and engineers performance? What non-technical personality traits should a research and scientific organization assess to decide among position candidates? Five non-technical character traits to evaluate candidates in hiring decisions are intelligence, imagination, initiative, interpersonal skills, and integrity are explored. Specific questions to ask candidates are suggested to investigate each trait.
Naukowcy i inżynierowie tworzą wiedzę naukową i techniczną, żeby generować społeczne i jednostkowe bogactwo, oraz powiązany z nim wzrost gospodarczy. Niniejszy artykuł zgłębia tematy tworzenia bogactwa, światowych wydatków na badania i rozwój (B&R), wydatki organizacji biznesowych, rządowych i akademickich oraz sektorów gospodarki na B&R w USA, oraz przedstawia charakterystykę amerykańskich pracowników zajmujących się nauką i technologią, łącznie z kosztami rekrutacji i wynagrodzenia. Proces rekrutacji naukowców i inżynierów jest sprofilowany. Wiele firm opierających się na technologii obecnie używa algorytmów sztucznej inteligencji do oceny wiedzy technologicznej aplikantów i wyboru optymalnego kandydata. Czy istnieją nietechniczne cechy osobowości, które są równie ważne dla sukcesu rekrutacji naukowców i inżynierów? Które nietechniczne cechy osobowości powinna brać pod uwagę organizacja naukowo-badawcza wybierając kandydatów na dane stanowisko? The paper views human sciences as a kind of cultural bond, building unity across all divisions and boundaries. For this purpose it uses arguments proposed by such intellectuals as Nussbaum, Rorty, Markowski and Assmann. It aims at justification of the thesis that humanities serve intrinsic integration and development of personality, social integration, maintaining bonds with the past and history, and creating a sense of common destiny of all human beings. Human sciences expand our horizons, allowing us to transcend the limits of our inborn egoism, they teach us how to imaginatively reach beyond and above the local perspective, creating foundations for interpersonal solidarity, respect, tolerance and compassion. The present political trends in Poland and in the world clearly favor natural and technical sciences, tending to devaluate and to marginalize humanities, which can be a prognostic of cultural regress, with unpredictable consequences for the future.

This paper examines Heidegger’s short 1944–45 lecture course, Introduction to Philosophy – Thinking and Poetizing, recently published in an English translation by Phillip Jacques Braunstein (Indiana). The course presents a unique and penetrating treatment of what, for Heidegger, is (1) the compelling place of mitdenken and mitdichten in the fundamental nature of philosophizing, and (2) the precise relationship of these elements to questions of human guidance, dwelling, and willfulness. I argue that, so doing, the text clarifies Heidegger’s uneasy position regarding the place of ‘poetizing’ in the work of imagination and reason. His ongoing engagement with Nietzsche and Hölderlin is here distilled such that we find a specific rubric for tracing Heidegger’s subtle, though decisive, attention to the connection between thought’s intrinsically ‘productive’ character and poetry’s refining ‘projective’ artistry. This connection becomes apparent when the discourse of the course is paired with the focus of his later text, Poetically Man Dwells (1951).

The article draws the outline of the studies of villager self-government system in China, then emphatically analyses a typical example, the XiangTu school, most scholars of which are teaching in the Center of China. The article analyses the change of study direction of the XiangTu school. The author points that the theoretical feature of the school is connecting villagers’ autonomy with governance of villages. However, the author criticizes the school for its flaws on the methodology.

This essay uses the notion of necroepistemology to expose the killing of the other as executed by the neoliberal historiography in Ethiopia. Utilizing Fanonian negative dialectics, it critiques the ahistorical, immaterial, and reified object, as well as universal history, promoted by the official Ethiopian historiography’s absolute time, space, and matter. It does so to reveal the ways in which the enduring social questions and new imaginations are dismissed by this historiography as the work of the global-local left. To counterbalance this practice, I return to the 1974 Ethiopian socialist revolution and to the staging of Ethiopian socialism as a critical transnational rethinking of the human in the country. At the same time, attending to the everyday struggle of women performers in both the imperial and revolutionary spaces, the essay reminds us how the revolutionary practice, which had envisioned a new social human, ended up marking female performers’ bodies as dangerous for the socialist movement. Revealing the ways in which women performers collaborated with and fought against a male revolutionary figure, this essay ends with a call to respond to the current necroepistemic moment to draw attention to the historically vulnerable people who are dying in Ethiopia in the here and now.
W artykule wykorzystano pojęcie nekroepistemologii, aby opisać proces zabijania Innego przez neoliberalną historiografię w Etiopii. Odwołując się do dialektyki negatywnej Frantza Fanona, autor poddaje krytyce ahistoryczny i zdematerializowany przedmiot badań oraz uniwersalizację historii praktykowaną w oficjalnej etiopskiej historiografii, która posługuje się absolutyzującą koncepcją czasu, przestrzeni i materii. Celem krytyki jest ujawnienie metod stosowanych przez tę historiografię, by marginalizować aktualne kwestie społeczne i odrzucać nowe wyobraźnie jako dzieło globalno-lokalnej lewicy. Szukając przeciwwagi dla tej praktyki, autor powraca do etiopskiej rewolucji socjalistycznej z 1974 i do inscenizacji etiopskiego socjalizmu jako krytycznej transnarodowej refleksji nad podejściem do człowieczeństwa w tym kraju. Jednocześnie, przyglądając się codziennym zmaganiom aktorek zarówno w przestrzeni imperialnej, jak i rewolucyjnej, przypomina, że praktyka rewolucyjna, która niosła nową wizję człowieka jako istoty społecznej, zakończyła się naznaczeniem ciał performerek jako niebezpiecznych dla ruchu socjalistycznego. Esej ukazuje współpracę i walkę aktorek z męskim rewolucjonistą, kończy się zaś wezwaniem do odpowiedzi na obecną sytuację nekroepistemiczną, aby zwrócić uwagę na bezbronnych ludzi, którzy umierają w Etiopii tu i teraz.

: This article attempts to answer the question of whether a work of art created under the influence of extrasensory images can be considered a marginal phenomenon in the European art. The author points out that in our culture the interest in this kind of creative inspiration gained importance only in the mid-nineteenth century. Then, she discusses various causes of altered states of consciousness and subsequent stages of trance during which extrasensory images appear. Focusing on works of art which were inspired by such images, she refers to the concepts of David Lewis-Williams, Stanislav Grof, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Aldous Huxley and Carl Gustav Jung. The text is concluded with a reflection on the contemporary significance of art with extrasensory sources. The author emphasizes the remonstrative nature of such art and its role in self-knowledge. It is believed that extrasensory images expand our understanding of personality and allow us to go beyond the scope of the problems imposed through the media by politicians or religious leaders.
Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy dzieła sztuki powstające pod wpływem obra-zów pozapercepcyjnych, można uznać za margines sztuki europejskiej. Autorka zwraca uwagę, że w naszej kulturze zainteresowanie tym rodzajem inspiracji twórczej uzyskało istotne znaczenie do-piero od XIX wieku. Następnie omawia różne przyczyny powstawania odmiennych stanów świado-mości i kolejne etapy transu, podczas którego pojawiają się obrazy pozapercepcyjne. Koncentrując się na dziełach sztuki, których źródłem były tego typu wyobrażenia, powołuje się między innymi na koncepcje David Lewisa-Williamsa, Stanislava Grofa, Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza, Aldousa Huxleya i Carla Gustava Junga. Tekst kończy refleksja dotycząca współczesnego znaczenia twór-czości o źródłach pozapercepcyjnych. Autorka podkreśla kontestacyjny charakter tego typu sztuki oraz jej rolę samopoznawczą. Uważa, że obrazy pozapercepcyjne rozszerzają nasze pojmowanie osobowości i pozwalają wyjść poza krąg problemów narzuconych za pośrednictwem mediów przez polityków czy przywódców religijnych.

Opis:
This article discusses one of the sources of Stefan Chwin’s writing imagination, namely the painting of Caspar David Friedrich. The author presents how the painting of the Romantic artist is present in the works of the Gdańsk novelist. It is pointed out that the presence of the Friedrich themes aims at representing ineffability and mystery which are touched upon by Stefan Chwin in his novels.

The article refers to the international scientific symposium which took place in 2019 in the UK capital during the Open House London. The meeting of scholars from Warsaw and London was devoted to the assumptions of architectural literature studies and possibilities of developing this approach for research on Polish emigration in London. In the first part of the article Aleksandra Wójtowicz – an author of the approach of architectural literature studies – presents its assumptions and possibilities of implementation. She recalls the features of ‘difficult places’ – a category developed by Warsaw’s interdisciplinary team. She also mentions the principles of ‘re-imaginary architecture’ – Justyna Gorzkowicz’s proposal – referring to the category of reading identity places in exile. The second part of the article is devoted to the specics of Open House London. Justyna Gorzkowicz presents the characteristics of two Polish places that the symposium participants could get acquainted with during their visit to London: PUNO’s headquarters and Cezary Bednarski’s Vertically Detached Houses.

Opis:
Philosophical discourse in Islam revolves around God, and God’s manifestation in the world. This article attempts to describe the philosophical concept, and especially the Sufi concept, of God. For Muslim philosophers the question “how does unity give rise to multiplicity?” had a crucial meaning. In Islam God is One, and everything else is two or more. The Oneness of being remains inaccessible to people. However, Sufis tried to give an answer to the question “What is Reality? What is the ‘face of God’, and what does this notion really mean?” And also “what veils separate Him from His creation?” Sufis tried to find the answer to all these questions not in the calm of a library but in deep religious experience. Because God in His mercy revealed the Laws in order that people would be able to make choices which lead directly to their felicity in the next stage of their experience. This was a difficult and dangerous process, and it required from neophytes a love of God. In their searches, the Sufis try to answer the question of what one sees when one throws off the inhibiting shackles of the mind and senses, what does one feel when one crosses the border of the phenomenal world? What kind of world does one observe when one wakes up from a dream which is life? What does one see in the state of illumination?

Podejmowany problem badawczy, przyjmujący postać pytania o kształt i przebieg kolonizacji pedagogiki ogólnej przez pedagogikę krytyczną w okresie transformacji ustrojowej w Polsce, ma swoje źródło w potrzebie rozpoznania obecnej dynamiki naszej wyobraźni pedagogicznej i zrozumienia fenomenu zróżnicowania pedagogiki krytycznej rozwijanej w poszczególnych rodzimych ośrodkach akademickich. Przygotowany w latach 2017–2019 materiał został podzielony na dwa artykuły. W części pierwszej rekonstrukcje poszczególnych tematów i wątków z zakresu problematyki teorii krytycznej szkoły frankfurckiej czy postmodernizmu stanowiły wprowadzenie do prezentacji wstępnego obrazu kolonizacji polskiej pedagogiki ogólnej przez pedagogikę krytyczną, który to proces zakorzeniania na przełomie lat 80. i 90. ubiegłego wieku stanowi zasadnicze zagadnienie części drugiej. Autor koncentruje uwagę na recepcji, reakcji, przebiegu i sposobach zakorzeniania się krytycznej teorii edukacji na gruncie polskiej pedagogiki w początkowej fazie jej osiedlania. Poczyniony wysiłek badawczy ma dostarczyć wiedzy przydatnej do kolejnych badań podjętej problematyki, rozpoznania dalszych losów poszczególnych kolonii pedagogiki krytycznej, ale również kilku wstępnych ustaleń, które Autor przedstawi w zakończeniu tego artykułu.
The research problem undertaken, taking the form of a question about the shape and course of the colonization of general pedagogy by critical pedagogy in the period of the political transformation in Poland, has its source in the need to recognize the current dynamics of our pedagogical imagination and also in the need to understand the phenomenon of the differentiation of critical pedagogy developed in individual Polish academic centers. The material prepared in 2017–2019 was divided into two articles. In the first part the reconstructions of individual topics and threads in the field of the critical theory of the Frankfurt school and postmodernism were a introduction to the presentation of the initial picture of the colonization of Polish general pedagogy by critical pedagogy, which process of rooting at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s will be the main issue in the second part. The author focuses on the reception, reaction, course and ways in which critical educational theory took root in the initial phase of its settlement in Polish pedagogy. The research effort made is to provide knowledge useful for further research on the issues raised, for identifying the further fate of individual colonies of critical pedagogy.
