Opis:
The article attempts to contribute to the discussion on the methods used in creating the world in the media, viewed from the rhetorical perspective. Implementations of the rhetorical principle of the adaptation of the utterance to the context and the situation of the audience to which exposition is directed (cf. K. Burke’s idea of identification and the so-called “identification” principle) are followed by both linguistic structuring of the utterance and the following argumentation may effect in the media content messages that are not only different but, frequently, create opposing images of the world. How far they may differ in their message is then shown with the example of the media reception of the death and the burial of Czesław Miłosz manifested in the presentations offered by two daily newspapers: Gazeta Wyborcza and Nasz Dziennik. The excerpted source material shows how the multitude of receivers designed to be reached by different mass media communication channels and diversity in taste and expectations of audiences makes it possible for journalists to create subjective interpretations of the world. Once created and tailored to the context of the audience, they function in parallel pathways and, should a clash between them ensue, the only outcome is that their rhetorical nature gets even more accentuated. With these circumstances given, what we experience then is a situation when different truths collide, while each of them surfaces within a given context of human conversation and each is validated by its respective audience to be reached and goals to be attained.

Healing traditions are very likely to have roots in the beginnings of any civilisation, which comes from the natural needs of a human striving for physical and mental comfort. On ethnically Polish lands, medical culture developed together with the society, which is reflected in the names of healers. The linguistic and cultural image of a doctor is affected by the anthropocentric experiences of speakers of Polish, stereotypes and the media that strengthen its versions, all recorded in the lexis, phraseology and paremiography. Today (according to the survey), negative traits of doctors (31) are significantly more common than their virtues (9) that include: being specific, accurate, efficient, devoted to duty and caring. According to the survey, today’s doctor is, most of all, in a hurry, overworked and tired, but also dissatisfied, uninterested in the patient, impatient, late, cold and always angry. People’s focus on doctors’ negative traits has been a permanent phenomenon for centuries.

Each language is anthropocentric and constitutes a link between man and culture verbalizing theoretical, practical and cultural knowledge acquired by man when it comes to conceptualizing the world. In the context of an anthropocentric paradigm of science, cultural linguistics is particularly important, since it investigates the problem of the relationship and interaction between language and culture. The reflection of the world (of objective reality) in human consciousness, in linguistics is represented by the relations between a conceptual and a linguistic vision of the world. The color turns out to be a universal category, although in each linguistic community retains its own specificity. Th e number of “basic” colors in each culture may be different. Th ese “basic” colors form a picture of the world “in color”, which is part of the linguistic image of the world. This worldview “in different colors” is based on the characteristics of color perception in a particular culture, reflecting at the same time individual conceptualization of each of the members of a linguistic community. In the article a lingoculturological analysis of Spanish phraseological units containing the color semantic element is presented. These “colorful units” are a significant phenomenon of Spanish culture reflected in the language and present particular nuances of the idiosyncrasies of Spain.

Opis:
Dwelling is one of the practices that builds the lifestyle of an individual who selects convenient, usually consistent elements from the entire range of communication offers. Analysis shows how living space is organised and presented in new development investments. The aim of the analysis was to reconstruct images of modern housing based on the marketing communication which is presented on development companies’ websites. It was possible to distinguish repetitive narratives about flats and estates considered as spaces that perform functions and serve specific purposes. The concept of JOS (Linguistic Image of the World) was used for the analysis and facilitated the discovery of the representation of the perception of reality contained in language. The research was based on the vocabulary, phraseology and semantics of the texts. The analysis made it possible to perceive and describe five highlights in communication dimensions of living (location, design adaptation, safety, community and comfort). Capturing the relationship between linguistic and social elements and their meaning, significant from the point of view of creating meanings, has led to the conclusion that buying an apartment from a developer equals buying a specific lifestyle. Developers using communication based on social norms and aspirations offer the individual a coherent vision of a “better” future and an ideal life. Despite the slight differences between various estate investments, the picture of residence presented in the marketing communications is universal—it refers to a small catalogue of values.

In order to conduct comparative research and to analyze the differences between lexemes in Polish and Swahili, I have chosen methodology connected within a course of cognitive research, namely the linguistic image of the world. As part of the project I would like to look into and describe the linguistic image of Africa in specific Polish reportages. In addition, and in order to show the differences in the ways of conceptualisation of the reality by representatives of other cultures, I am planning to visit Tanzania to do more research. This article contains the linguistic image of Africa in a specific Polish dictionary. I have analysed the lexemes: Africa, African and Negro to show the dissimilarities.

Materials collected from 30 respondents, including 15 students from Śląski University and from a Lublin University and 15 students from Oxford University, showed that the concept of ‘giftedness’ is understood by Polish students identically to English students. ‘Giftedness’ was definedby a series of connotations: ‘creativity’, ‘talent’, ‘ability to do something’, ‘predisposition’, and ‘organization of thinking’.

Opis:
In the recent years, a turn towards interdisciplinary research in which proper names are presentedas an interpretation of reality and a mirror of historical, political, social and cultural processes has been observed in onomastics. Names can reflect a popular vision of the world presenting its anthropocentric conceptualization reconstructed on the basis of knowledge, beliefs, valuation systems and cultural experiences of people. Thus the cultural analysis of onyms comprises notions of a linguistic image of the world, point of view, profiling, conceptualization and categorization of ideas, valuation, stereotype and prototype, connotation, metaphor and metonymy. Special attention is also paid to the secondary functions of proper names which, apart from indicating and identifying objects, can also perform metaphorical, expressive, ludic, pragmatic and marketing functions. The so-called cultural onomastics focuses on the study of proper names in this aspect. The analysis of onyms is shifted in it towards the creator and interpreter, presenting the manner of conceptualizing a selected fragment of reality in the categories of a consolidated mental pattern. Interdisciplinary research develops in many directions, making use of the methods and notions of such sciences as sociology, psychology, folk medicine, cognitivism, ethnology, folkloristics, anthropology, religious studies, neurology. Cultural onomastics concentrates on a variety of proper names belonging to the fields of anthroponymy, toponymy, media onymy and chrematonymy. Furthermore, the new research fields necessitate changes in the traditional methodology as well as consideration of a broad social and cultural context within a particular system of values.

Communication in public spaces has a tremendous influence on every single aspect of the society: education, politics, culture. A crucial role in this communication is played by the media which present to the public a precise interpretation and valuation of given information, thus creating specific images of the world. In 2018, “Rainbow Friday” – a social initiative coordinated by the civil rights group Campaign Against Homophobia – has become a widely commented topic which attrcted a lot of from the media. Thanks to the analysis of such publications we can observe mechanisms of creating and consolidating specific world images by the media and to better understand how different world views validate the topic of sexual education. The main goal of this article is to look into the narrations of liberal and conservative media with regard to “Rainbow Friday” and to highlight the connections of those narrations with the already realized researches on the language used to describe people from sexual minorities.

In the Russian linguistic image of the world the concepts of MOSCOW and THE PROVINCES constitute an opposition since they are placed on two distant valuerelated poles. It seems that in the linguistic awareness there is no rich modern Moscow in separation from the backwards, poor and civilizationally and mentally neglected provinces characterised by parochialism. The characteristic features of both concepts are most clearly visible in their juxtaposition, and without it they lose their meaning. This is a specific relationship which has not been observed in other antonymous pairs of concepts such as good and evil, or wealth and poverty.

linguistic image of the world
Opis:
The aim of the article is to reconstruct the linguistic image of the Polish clergy on the basis of Aleksander Świętochowski’s feuilletons. This image is determined by the point of view of the speaker. In my analysis I have distinguished the following points of view: 1) the POV of a non-believer, 2) the POV of a positivist and an involved citizen, 3) the POV of a positivist and scientist. These perspectives are complementary and mutually determining. As a non-believer, the feuilletonist distances himself from the clergy. He views Church authorities through the prism of their decisions and his judgment is always negative. The feuilletonist also focuses on the behaviour of the clergy. He notices and denounces their immoral attitudes. A similar, negative image of the clergy is presented from the point of view of a positivist and an involved citizen. The representatives of the Church are depicted as intellectually backward religious fanatics. The priests who are open to science or are scientists themselves are perceived and judged in a positive light by the feuilletonist, who expresses his respect and admiration towards them. The same concerns the representatives of the clergy who actively contribute to the wellbeing of society. As regards language, the feuilletonist uses contrast and axiologically charged vocabulary, including religious and biblical expressions, which is both effective and persuasive. Furthermore, the suggestiveness of the images under discussion is enhanced by means irony and expressions with negative connotations.

Acquiring a knowledge that goes beyond sensual experience (for example, looking through a microscope or telescope) and beyond categories rooted in language, requires a lot of courage, crossing the safe boundaries of the domesticated and designated world. The poetic porte-parole of Wis³awa Szymborska struggles with the experience of crossing these boundaries, which leads to undermining the customary categorisations established in our common language. The author of the paper interprets these poetic transgressions – evoked in the works of the Noble Prize winner – from the linguistic perspective. Namely, she refers them to two concepts of the linguistic categorisation of the world: logical (scientific), originating from Aristotle’s theory, and cognitive, alluding to Immanuel Kant’s philosophy focused on the popular (naïve and culturally determined) image of the world. The paper presents the manner in which devices of artistic expression, such as a metaphor, negation, tautology, gradation, etc., are adopted by the poet to undermine both the popular (stereotypical) qualification of phenomena and scientifically determined category boundaries.

The text is a study on an excerpt from materi-al which is part of research reconstructing the linguistic and cultural image of Poles and of Slovenians. An analysis of the operational categories of the lin-guistic image of the world is a valuable source of knowledge about the stereo-typical image of the country and of its representatives, reflecting the subjective point of view of respondents. A binary model emerges clearly, with a positive – negative (unambitious) attitude of Slovenians towards science and education. The comparison of the auto- and heterostereotypical approach, in our case the Slovenian one with the Polish one (respondents who had had contact with Slo-venians), yields a broader picture of the studied aspect.

In the course of her research, the Authoress aims to show the fundamental differences in the way the linguistic image of the world is constructed in different languages (here: Polish and Classical Hebrew) at the level of syntactic structures. This component of the linguistic image of the world less frequently constitutes the object of research in the Polish cognitive tradition than, for example, lexis, which is why the Authoress considers the collected phrasemes and the meanings they convey to be particularly worth highlighting. The linguistic material that forms the basis for the research comes from the part of the Hebrew Bible called Nübî´îm, and the syntactic structures themselves are selected from the biblical material with the noun vyai ´iš, which defines man in the Bible as an individual. The structures presented here, built from a combination of the nouns xa', [;re, vyai and the prepositions B., l., l[;, la,, ta,, K. express complex and varied interpersonal relations: there are many images of closeness, cooperation, care, unanimity, but also feuds, conflicts, ruthless struggle and rivalry, with which the history of Israel was marked. Semantically, they complement the linguistic image of the intricate interpersonal relationships portrayed on the pages of the Bible.

Introduction: The article presents a linguistic image of the modern world based on a study on children performed using Stefan Baley’s method. The article follows up with a discussion of the theses of the author’s own research. The article presents selected research results. Research Aim: The research aims to understand better children’s and youth’s experiences using the abecadło method and to compare results with those published in 1947 by Stefan Baley’s research team. Method: The research was proceeded by the abecadło method suggested by Stefan Baley and used by his research team in 1945 and 1947. Results: The presented results respond to three elements: words-associations most commonly recalled by children (taking differences between younger and older groups into consideration); words-associations reflecting ongoing social-cultural changes (taking differences between younger and older groups into consideration); words considered as universal and independent from the political, cultural, social and economic context and separated from the age of researched groups. Conclusion: The research show that present-day children’s experiences can be grouped and presented as four types of associations: 1) the first one is created by mass media and modern technology; 2) the second one is created by geographic names and connected with nature ones: animals, plants etc.; 3) the third one is created by words related to human and animal proper nouns; 4) the fourth one is created by universal words.
