Opis:
Works belonging to the world literary canon are widely commented on by literary scholars. The editorial aspects of the editions of the same works, however, do not have such thorough studies. The discussion of the editorial features of children’s publications seems to be all the more important because improperly selected typographic parameters may significantly impair the quality of the reading experience and discourage reading itself. The article indicates the importance of particular architectural elements of the Polish editions of two masterpieces of children’s literature, Winnie the Pooh and Alice in Wonderland, which appeared in Poland after 1989. The indication of specific typographical sizes and layouts of illustrations makes it possible to determine reading competences which should be possessed by a reader designed by the publisher, and thus also to prove whether a particular edition has been given an appropriate editorial design for the recipient.

The subject of the presented paper is the analysis of the graphic design of the novel The 35th of May or Conrad’s Ride to the South Seas by Erich Kästner, edited by Nasza Księgarnia publishing house in the period 1957-2008. The Polish edition of the book, illustrated by an eminent representative of the Polish School of illustration, Bohdan Butenko, has the features of a picture book. It is characterized by the versatility of the project, including typography and book “architecture". The graphic layout of the book, examined as a form of intersemiotic translation, is analyzed in terms of humor, which is present in both the literary text and illustrations in several typical figures: caricature, carnivalesque "world upside down", subtle parody and satire.
Tematem artykułu jest analiza szaty graficznej powieści Ericha Kästnera 35 maja albo Jak Konrad pojechał konno do mórz południowych w wydaniach Naszej Księgarni z lat 1957–2008. The text deals with representations of the human body in the illustrations of Fritz Kahn’s publications – an important popularizer of science during the years of the Weimar Republic. Associated with the publishing house Franckh’sche Verlagshandlung, Kahn was the author of numerous books on popular science, the most important being the five-volume Das Leben des Menschen, with successive parts published from 1922–1931. The book contained more than 1,000 illustrations, executed by a group of about 20 graphic designers. The author of the present article analyzes the images from Kahn’s publications in a broader context. He demonstrates the specific nature of the publisher Franckh’sche Verlagshandlung, and reconstructs for us the circle of graphic designers and their way of working on the visual aspect of Das Leben des Menschen. He analyzes the various types of representations of the human body found in Kahn’s publications, and then places them within the tradition of depicting the human body (Wolfgang van Kempelem, nineteenth century productivists), as well as on the artistic map of the Weimar Republic (among others medical atlases, DADA, Bauhaus, Cologne Progressives).

The front cover of a book usually contains the title, the authors’names, the publisher’s logo and an illustration. All these elements announce the content of the book, and the paraverbal elements (illustration, typographical arrangement…) can also be used to awaken the curiosity of the potential reader. This article deals with the reproductions of art works chosen by the editors for the front covers of Translation Studies books. Cover illustrations are treated here as a kind of “definition of translator’s work through a pictorial metaphor”, i.e. as a representation of how translation can be understood or as an indication of its important features. The analysis of these illustrations shows the various means used by the publishers of Translation Studies books to define translation through pictures.

The paper is a sample of the author´s current intermedial research into the illustrations of Karel Jaromír Erben’s volume of ballads Kytice (1853). Visual transmediations of a literary pretext may be understood as interpretations sui generis: while illustrations reveal the individual attitude of the visual artist, the illustrated book bears traces of the conditions in which it was published. In case of a classical work such as Kytice, numerous illustrated editions inevitably reflect also the concept of cultural tradition in the period concerned. Relevant social, creative and spiritual problems and needs of the time may be projected onto the illustrations resulting in a meaning-making process related to and parallel to the textual one. The focus of this enquiry is expressed by the optical categories of colour, brightness, and contrast as related to the visual representations and traits of the pretext. Featured illustrators: Zdeněk Sklenář, Alén Diviš, Helena Konstantinová.

Objectives of the study: The quest to establish how skits and comic illustrations have made an impact through healthy learning for social change prompted this study that focuses on students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO) Ondo State. As a result, the research questions that guided this study were: what is RUGIPO students’ extent of exposure to skits programs and educational comic illustrations? What are the health benefits of their exposure to comedy skits and comic cartoons? What is the impact of skits and comic illustrations on the students’ lifestyles, and lastly, what are the similarities and differences in the two media that determine their transmedia rendering components. Research method: The method used in this study is essentially a survey method, which is crucial for obtaining opinions from the target population. A descriptive research approach was also used in clarifying essential concepts. A brief description of the context: Transmedia storytelling is narration across multiple media, each contributing to the story; in that regard, it becomes innovative. Skits with comic illustrations are forms of media that can be used in the teaching process. Their core component is humor, very popular in Nigeria, which is experiencing all forms of social problems, also evident in academia. Social learning theory, developmental media theory and the Socio-Ecological Model are the theoretical frameworks adopted in this study. They are based on the media and also rooted in psychology and sociology, thereby forming a background to ground the findings of the study. Research findings: The findings revealed there is a great shortage of local transmedia production, while the development of transmedia narratives is a complex creative exercise from a technical point of view. However, the more students read and watch humorous content through skits and comic illustrations, the more they learn how to interact in their peer groups. Skits and comic illustrations as a form of media remain influential. Conclusions and recommendations: Both skits and comic illustrations rely on humor. The study therefore explained that when exposed to both, the health benefits are psychological and enhance mental health. Among other things, it suggested that the National Orientation Agency of Nigeria should adopt transmedia storytelling as a strategic tool to enhance their sensitization campaigns. Creators of skits and comic illustrations are also advised to consider native  transmedia productions for wider reach and positive social change.

Current need of the social integration of people with a handicap, either physical, social, or other, finds significant professional response in a field of pre-school and elementary education. In the accordance with the request of holistic child's personality development (harmonious integration of its cognitive, social-emotional, and perceptual-motoric areas) the education by art seems to be helpful and effective in removing barriers and deepening child's skills to understand and respect the otherness and also as one of the effective ways leading to the social acceptation and inclusion of people with some kind of a handicap. Paper deals with the possibilities of educational use of illustrated books for children and youth, which thematize one of the handicap types – visual impairment. It roots from the assumption of high effectivity of the experiential methods (“through personal experience to understanding”) and examines inclusive thinking formation options and attitudes of intact pupils through experiential activities, which use illustrated books thematizing blindness. Solution of the issue comes from the analysis and comparison of the poethological aspects of artistic expression of such handicap in concrete book titles. There are compared artistic-expressive and receptive specifics of various illustrative approaches, particularly their aesthetic-experiential potential – extent of possible sensor, emotional, and cognitive experiences, which offer various modalities of the illustrative rendering of visual impairment to the child's recipient. The same attention is given to their ethical and axiological reflection. In the context of these findings, there are defined paradigmatic differences between the books illustrated in traditional ways and artistically experimental books. Following this, there are outlined alternative models of the didactical application of the issue.

The objective of the study was to establish the impact of illustration on the reading and interpreting of a poem in the case when only one illustration is provided with the text. The research study involved 408 students of the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Arts. The students were divided into two groups, of which one was given the poem Učenjak (Scholar) written by Niko Grafenauer and illustrated by Lidija Osterc, while the other had the same poem illustrated by Marjan Manček. Both groups had to answer a number of questions regarding personal traits of the literary character, his appearance and the environment he lives in. The results showed that the illustrations had a significant impact on the interpretation of the physical features of the literary character and the environment he is set in. This in turn affected the understanding of the message of the poem.

Antonio Tabucchi is one of the most representative authors of contemporary Italian literature. His output includes a short story for children entitled Isabella e l’ombra, which was illustrated by Isabella Staino and to whom the story is dedicated. Instead of relying on words to write short texts at school, the main character, a little girl named Isabella, uses colours and explains their chromatic compositions to the teacher. Undoubtedly, the writer’s pedagogical intention behind this story is for young readers to understand that literary expression does not occur only by writing but also through images and colours that can transmit as many emotions as written texts do. Moreover, the text, which can be considered a Bildungsroman for children, touches upon some topics visible in other novels and stories by Tabucchi. This paper aims to analyse the way in which Tabucchi shares some of his existential ideas with a non-adult audience, particularly regarding the relationship between various forms of language, the symbolism of colours, the power of visual communication, and the importance of such feelings as sadness, affection, and generosity.

Artistic activity at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries resulted not only in the development of literature and art, but also functional art and crafts, e.g. graphics and book decoration. Apart from artistic press, it was clearly visible in the phenomenon of the so-called beautiful book. The most distinguished artists of that period: Stanisław Wyspiański, Jan Bukowski, Antoni Procajłowicz – designed covers, vignettes and decorations of the best-known literary works. Lucjan Rydel, who found himself among those artists, was a friend of Wyspiański and cooperated with him, which meant that their first joint works heralded the discussed phenomenon at the Vistula River. This big event was the publication of Rydel’s translation of Iliada with the pictures and illustrations by Wyspiański, who also decorated Rydels’ volumes of poetry, using floral motifs, which were typical in his later work. Also other artists in their ornaments have tried to refer to the motifs which were dominant in Rydel’s works. Thanks to this practice, some editions of dramas (1902, designed by A. Procajłowicz) and Bajka o Kasi i królewiczu (1904, designed by S. Dębicki) should be regarded as the most renowned works of the ‘beautiful book’ trend, not only in Poland, but also in East-Central Europe. This paper focuses on the most representative ‘beautiful books’, based on Lucjan Rydel’s works from the period 1896–1911.

The article puts into an analysis the astonishing fact of an impressive number of artists from all over the world who executed illustrations to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There in the view of surprisingly little information provided by Carroll in the dilogy text. The comparison of the graphic material, selected by the article’s author in consideration of its high artistic value, brings about an opportunity to follow different artistic approaches, strategies, techniques, modes, styles, manners and fashions. The time span of the discussed material covers 150 years, ranging from Carroll’s own illustrations to his manuscript of Alice’s Adventures Underground to original artworks created by various illustrators for the art show celebrating Alice’s 150th anniversary in 2015, which have been published in the exhibition catalogue. The author of the article suggests that the very lack of extensive description of Alice in the dilogy, actually allowed the illustrators, or even encouraged them, to introduce original Alice’s representations, according to their own preferences, and willingly reject John Tenniel’s canonical illustrations from the first 1865 edition.

The paper presents the Cyrillic XVII-century manuscript “Vinets Khrystov”, comprising Baroque sermons by the prominent Ukrainian preacher Antonii Radyvylovskyi. Special attention is paid to the decorative elements employed for illuminating and structuring the content of the codex, which serves as the model for the namesake edition published in Kyiv in 1688. The study demonstrates that the embellishments of “Vinets” are an integral part of the manuscript, often correlating with its textual part. Initials, headpieces, and tailpieces, as well as the title composition in “Vinets Khrystov”, can be employed to purely decorate and meaningfully illustrate the monument.
