The article attempts to search for continuity between the past and the present inscribed in the language, using selected idioms as examples. The author presents idioms as a linguistic “transmitter” of culture reflecting the experiences of its users. The paper concludes with a few reflections on the role of language education and creating the linguistic awareness of the young generation. The author highlights the need to combine the knowledge of the history of traditional idioms and the knowledge of using new idioms created for advertising and media purposes to shape the attitudes and language activity of young people.

In contemporary Polish, there are phrases and winged words that come from films, TV series, songs, the language of politics, advertising, popular TV and radio programmes. Among the well-established expressions from the film and TV series, there are permanent verbal connections derived from the films by S. Bareja. Fixed verbal connections stand out among them: Słuszną linię ma nasza władza, Jak jest zima, to musi być zimno, Narodziła się nowa świecka tradycja, Ile jest cukru w cukrze, Nie wiem, nie znam się, nie orientuję się, zarobiony jestem. These idioms, winged words appear in both canonical and modified form. The usual modifications change or replace parts of the original phrases. Innovation strengthens the invariant. Fixed verbal connections of this type are usually ironic and comic. They often fulfill a ludic or phatic function – their appearance is the sender’s communicative signal addressed to the recipient participating in the same culture which is being created today not only by literature, music, painting and other works of art, but also by films, TV series, television and radio programs and so on.

In the paper, scientific literature concerning phraseological derivation has been reviewed. Phraseological derivation is very important in developing lexical resources. Main part of the paper concerns the process of univerbation. Review of the scientific literature shows that the view of European scientists on the complex issue of correlation between phraseol-ogy and word formation in deriving words from idioms is still up to date. The aim of the research paper is to make the reader think further of the complex issue of phraseological derivation.

One of the most important and most complex research tasks within phraseology and phraseography is the description of the meaning of idioms. Idioms are, as seen from the semantic point of view, especially complicated language units. They contain a semantic added value which results from two aspects: (i) their ambiguity based on feedback between the literal and the lexicalized meaning, (ii) their polylexicality – their semantic derivations can occur on the level of the word group and also concern the individual elements. The aim of the article is to characterize the semantic potential of idioms and to try its explication.

The article points out some challenges to classify the idiomatic expressions of football in French. It shows that the basic semantic criteria of compositionality and transparence, and therefore the distinction between collocations and idioms, are to be studied in relation with the football terminology, the context itself and the language register. These elements influence the transparence of expressions, effecting on the category within the collocations (regular, transparent, opaque) and can even result in changes between the main groups of collocations and idioms.

Ces facteurs influencent sur la transparence et de ce fait sur la classification des expressions idiomatiques du football, entraînant des glissements entre les sous-catégories de collocations (régulières, transparentes, opaques), voire entre les collocations et les locutions.

Undoubtedly, phraseological units constitute one of the most fascinating aspects of the language, especially with regard to their illustrative and often abstract meaning contrasted with their equivalents in other languages. Describing the same phenomena, they often emphasise distinct elements. For instance, in English one can lie through one’s teeth, however, one neither needs teeth to lie in Polish, as eyes are indispensable (kłamać komuś w żywe oczy), nor in German – in this case, all that is necessary is somebody’s face (jemandem glatt ins Gesicht lügen). In order to beat about the bush, cotton is required in Polish (owijać w bawełnę) and flowers in German (etwas durch die Blumen sagen). Nevertheless, in some cases the equivalence rate is considerably high (lay one’s cards on the table – wyłożyć karty na stół – die Karten offen auf dem Tisch legen). However, speaking off the cuff has hardly anything in common with its German equivalent (aus dem hohlen Bauch heraus sprechen), whereas the Polish equivalent (mówić bez przygotowania) is not even deemed a phraseological unit at all. This article is an attempt at a comparative analysis of selected English, German, and Polish phraseological expressions concerning human communication with regard to both their idiomaticity degree in accordance to typologies by Harald Burger (2010), Christiane Römer and Brigitte Matzke (2005) and the represented equivalence type, based on classifications by Hessky (1992), and Laskowski (2003). Finally, the question regarding the linguistic worldview, the origin of convergences and divergences between the aforementioned expressions, is touched upon.

The object of the contribution is the action-type-related, synonymous and antonymous variance of the idioms of the type “in der Klemme sein”, which is thematized against the background of the traditional phraseological and construction-grammatical approaches in phraseology. The idioms are compiled in their macroparadigms and examined with regard to the formation mechanisms (construction patterns/templates) of the action type related variants, synonymous and antonymous pairs. The goal of the paper is to identify the design patterns (construction patterns, templates) present within the macro paradigms. The conceptualizations and descriptive entities of traditional phraseology underlying the paper: micro- and macroparadigms, character fields, model formations/phraseotemplates, synonymous and antonymous pairs, synonymous phraseological series appear compatible with the tools of construction grammar, in particular with the entities of construction and construction pattern and the mechanism of coining. Thanks to the consideration of the language as a whole (language system in its entirety) and the orientation towards cross-level (lexis-syntax-semantics) and at the same time systematic changes, construction grammar provides a favorable theoretical framework for the description of the paradigmatically conditioned variance of idioms.

The present study investigates to what extent the effect of cross-linguistic differences on L2 idiom comprehension is modulated by the presence of a context. Sixty students of German as a foreign language (L1 French) completed a comprehension test consisting of metaphorical idioms in the L2 that differed from their L1 equivalents conceptually and formally and were presented with or without context. The results show that an increasing degree of conceptual and formal distance as well as the absence of context are generally associated with lower performance in the idiom comprehension test. However, the analysis of interactions shows that the presence of the context was especially supportive for conceptually different items, whereas the facilitative effect of formal similarity considerably diminished with increasing conceptual distance.

Idiomatic expressions in Florian Czarnyszewicz’s novels as a linguistic evidence of mutual relations of the Polish community by the Berezina river at the beginning of the 20th centuryThis article is an attempt at analysing collocations chosen from Florian Czarnyszewicz’s novels Nadberezyńcy and Wicik Żywica on the basis of their semantic classification. The subject of the analysis were collocations expressing mutual interpersonal relations: love, relations with family members or neighbours, fighting with somebody / showing hostility, punishment / revenge, killing / dying. The majority of the analysed idioms are used to express emotions, among which negative emotions prevail. The analysed units can be divided in the following way:typical of spoken Polishhaving full semantic, lexical and grammatical equivalents in Belorussianhaving full semantic, lexical and grammatical equivalents in Russianhaving full semantic, lexical and grammatical equivalents in Belorussian and Russian.This division results from the historical and linguistic conditions – the Poles inhabiting ethnic Belarus lived in a multinational environment. Traditional Polish communities were located near Belorussian and Russian (Old-Believers’) villages. The genetic proximity of the Polish, Belorussian (including dialects) and Russian languages gave rise to numerous language interferences. The evidence of this is the vocabulary used in Czarnyszewicz’s novels, especially idioms.

The name psych-verbs is commonly assigned to verbs denoting mental or emotional states, such as fear, worry, frighten, or surprise. Such verbs select a participant/an individual who experiences an emotional or mental state, usually referred to as an Experiencer, and a non-Experiencer argument, sometimes called stimulus, trigger of emotion, causer or target/subject matter, or subsumed under the label of ‘theme’ (Landau, 2010, p. 5). The special behaviour of Experiencers, related to the so-called ‘psych effects’, is the reason why psychological predicates have been a subject of debate in theoretical syntax for several decades. The aim of this study is to check whether English verbal phraseological units, which denote a psychological condition of an Experiencer and occur with locative Prepositional Phrases (PPs), may serve as evidence for Landau’s (2010, p. 6) hypothesis of ‘Experiencers as mental locations’. Landau’s theory has been chosen since it covers a much broader variety of data, in comparison with the previous approaches, offered by Belletti & Rizzi (1988), Grimshaw (1990), and Pesetsky (1995), among others. The data analysed in the paper have been extracted from English dictionaries of idiomatic expressions, supported with the COCA Corpus. The study focuses on Object Experiencer verbal phraseological units that display a structure V + PP. The results of the study reveal that, in total, out of 3,000 tokens, there are only 50 psychological verbal idiomatic expressions with an Object Experiencer. However, the data show that a lexical P with the Experiencer as an object appears only in 13 (26%) idiomatic expressions out of the 50, whereas 37 items (74%) include an Experiencer preceded with no P. The latter might be treated as exhibiting an oblique Experiencer with a null preposition. However, no relevant syntactic evidence can be found in support the claim that there is a covert P in this type of phrase. Therefore, the results do not provide enough evidence in favour of Landau’s (2010) theory of Experiencers as mental locations, placed either in a covert or overt PP.
