Opis:
This article examines sociological, psychological, and suicidological research on the determinants of male suicide to explore the fact that Polish men complete suicide 7.4 times more than women, a frequency twice as high as in the US. This paper is based upon an examination of relevant literature and statistical databases. A keyword search was completed in both Polish and English language databases. Ideals of masculinity and negative social attitudes towards a non-binary view of gender may increase stressors and discourage men in Poland from revealing their problems while seeking support, explaining the high rates of suicide completion among Polish men. Suicide prevention programs must tackle gender conceptualizations and alcohol use patterns as well as increase avenues for male help-seeking behaviors. These changes will require political and religious organizations to confront the weakening of male hegemony as the organizing principle for family and society. This paper explores the increased rate of male suicide in Poland from the perspective of gender.

Opis:
Traditionally, sociology has spent much more time exploring relationships between humans, than between humans and other animals. However, this relative neglect is starting to be addressed. For sociologists interested in human identity construction, animals are symbolically important in functioning as a highly complex and ambiguous “other”. Theoretical work analyses the blurring of the human-animal boundary as part of wider social shifts to postmodernity, whilst ethnographic research suggests that human and animal identities are not fixed but are constructed through interaction. After reviewing this literature, the second half of the paper concentrates on animals in science and shows how here too, animals (rodents and primates in particular) are symbolically ambiguous. In the laboratory, as in society, humans and animals have unstable identities. New genetic and computer technologies have attracted much sociological attention, and disagreements remain about the extent to which humananimal boundaries are fundamentally challenged. The value of sociologists’ own categories has also been challenged, by those who argue that social scientists still persist in ignoring the experiences of animals themselves. This opens up notoriously difficult questions about animal agency. The paper has two main aims: First, to draw links between debates about animals in society and animals in science; and second, to highlight the ways in which sociologists interested in animals may benefit from approaches in Science and Technology Studies (STS).

Young workers are the category of people who experience precarity and precariousness the most. This article explores the work experiences of the young precarious workers as an important component of constructing their social identity. It focuses on the problems with sense of professional identity, biographical sense of work experiences and the processes of transition to adulthood in the context of insecure earnings and permanent uncertainty. It also deals with the lack of control over time and future life plans and the alienation of work. As a consequence of precariousness, young people need to cope with traps of uncertainty, poverty and helplessness. The article is based on the analysis of biographical interviews with young people aged 18-30 years old in low-paid temporary jobs, low paid open-ended contracts, traineeships and the unemployed. The whole collection contains 70 interviews. The article focuses on ten cases which represent more general properties of work experiences. The analysis enables us to address emerging questions concerning the relationships between constructing biography and the experience of work and to formulate tentative conclusions from the ongoing research.

Opis:
This paper aims to reconstruct the biographical work (Corbin and Strauss) undertaken by parents of non-normative people. The initiating event of biographical work is the disclosure of a non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity by the child. For many parents, this is an event that causes a breakdown of previous schemes of action, a gradual loss of control, and suffering. The empirical data consist of autobiographical narratives of parents of people with non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The study involved mothers and fathers residing throughout Poland, who were selected according to the snowball procedure. The data were collected through the narrative interview technique and compiled according to the analytical procedure proposed by Fritz Schütze, which is part of the interpretative research paradigm. In the course of four parallel biographical processes (contextualizing, coming to terms, reconstituting identity, and recasting biography), the new experience is integrated into the biography, its consequences are understood and accepted, a coherent identity is reconstituted and a new course for one’s life are charted. The analysis of the narrators’ biographical work has made it possible to identify three categories that organize the course of the parents’ lives and identities—stigma, normalization, and activism.

Codes of conduct seek to institutionalize certain practices and govern the actions of those who accept the regime. As they arise and seek to displace established ways of life in organizations, they provide examples of institutional development and change. This paper examines how the UK code of corporate governance arose and developed over time, and how it leads to a common understanding across various fields of social actors. Specifically, it examines the debate about what the ethos of the board for directors should be, as exhibited in consultations informing the 1992, 2003 and 2010 versions of the code. It shows social actors, as expected, taking stances aligned with their economic interests. But over time and through the institutional work involved in the debate, some of those actors identify increasingly with the process, and the collective understanding informs the identity of those participants.

The body that is experienced as an object, which requires constant reshaping, adjusting to working conditions, might get damaged, and worn out. Using Simmel’s (1965) concept of poverty as a social category one is put into, and West and Fenstermaker’s (1995) concept of class as something one “does,” this paper looks at the AmeriCorps program, to examine how members “do poor.” In 22 in-depth interviews with a diverse sample of AmeriCorps members, I detail a member’s “typical” experience with poverty: first, encountering themselves in poverty, then working to disassociate themselves from having a “poor” identity, and, finally, still maintaining the positive experiences associated with their service.

Education is a complex process. Very often it is defined as a general set of action aimed at education, which comprised of aims and rules. Exemplification of education are educational institutions, and educational programmes on each its level. Among many of its aims the most crucial is leading the individual to full independence. Independence is a complex process, demanding not only the example but also own and very often verified experiences. Experiences, which allow the individual to recognize own possibilities, needs and roles, which are going to be fulfilled. Independence allows then for asking questions concerning oneself, own place among others, and these always stay in a close bond to own identity. In special education the subject of identity gain greater significance. Pedagogues concentrate mainly on language expression and on actions, by which disabled are expressing themselves. More important become examining if undertaken educational actions allow disabled to perceive themselves as independent individuals. Are they equipped with emancipated, inner strategies of controlling? Or, another way round, is their independence controlled from outside and depends on retrieving inner patterns of behaviours?

Eugenics as a cultural and historical context for social work with the familyThe social discourse on the use of knowledge in the field of genetic research involving both supporters as well as opponents. First, pointing to the medical aspects, emphasize new possibilities for prevention and treatment of diseases. Others warn against the temptation associated with the manipulation of human nature through sex selection, genetic features children or patching or muscles. As stated Marek Drwięga the problem (and the related moral dilemmas) occurs when - instead of the treatment of diseases - people use gene therapy to "improve their physical and mental faculties" to the consequences "as a unit better to" find themselves "above norm ". The variety of positions and the lack of clarity in the expression of individual opinion partly due to the fact that technological progress is much faster than moral reflection. This leads - according to Michael Sandel - a situation in which people express their concern about reaching into the language of autonomy, justice and individual rights. Unfortunately, this "moral" vision of the world does not bring relief to people and does not release them from anxiety, as they continue to answer the fundamental questions concerning, inter alia, the design of children or human cloning remain open. In the context of genetic engineering and biotechnology is increasingly appearing concept of eugenics - invented in the nineteenth century by Francis Galton and meaning "well-born" - which is the "gate" to the in-vitro procedure. In today's world, where thanks to advanced technologies dominate pleasure, convenience and comfort, eugenics may be manipulating the eternal laws of nature in order to "breed a man without any dysfunction and deficits, or to bring into being an artificial being, human-like in appearance only, and characterized by excellent physical and mental efficiency." The purpose of our article is, therefore, a reflection on the risks associated with the formation of new sources of inequality and identity wounds, which is particularly important in the field of contemporary social work with the family.

Processes of European identity formation are analysed here in terms of identity work and, specifically, relationship (interplay) between biographical and collective identity work. First sections of the text (1 and 2) are focussed on grounding the approach in a range of theoretical orientations (symbolic interactionism and culturalist perspectives), on outlining its methodological implications (the rationale for using the method of autobiographical narrative interviewing and various methods of text analysis), and, finally, on developing research questions and preliminary analytical dimensions of studying the collective identity work, especially in relation to European identity work, the latter being based on results of the author’s research on the minority nation society of Wales (e.g. collective identity constructions, and figurations, in terms of cultural periphery / centre, hybridity, and marginality). In the next step of analysis, these preliminary questions and dimensions are related to problems of European identity work in general. In the next section (3) overall heuristic strategies of the offered project are formulated: the attitude of refractive self-reflection, the dialogical principle of calibrating research interactants’ perspectives, a multi-layer approach to the interplay between individual experiences and a variety of collective meaning resources, the strategy of contrastive comparison of studied cases and, finally, the zooming procedure of focussing (coding) empirical materials. The last section of the text (4) relates to the objectives / expected products of the project concerning dimensions and integrated model of collective identity work in Europe, and their practical implications for a range of social / political activities in education, legislation, governance, as well as for NGOs, social arenas and social movements.

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of women’s experiences of call to Christian pastoral ministry as a second career—a mid-life turning point. Drawing on 44 semi-structured interviews with pastors of different denominations, I look at women’s stories of call through the lens of interpretive theory to analyze how women create meanings around this life altering event, and how they construct past experiences in light of these decisions. I employ George Herbert Mead’s theory of time to analyze how women afford prior secular work experiences sacred meaning in light of their subsequent “pastoral call” experience. This paper attempts to arrive at a better understanding of women’s experience of entering pastoral ministry, as well as their past and future life trajectories.

Social comparisons, seeing oneself in relation to others, are universal, common, and perhaps even necessary. In a study of parents of deaf children, intense, open, and mutual examinations were voiced in parental groups, meetings between parents and professionals, and interviews. These comparisons were generated in a specific situation created by successful claims for separate milieus advocated by the Deaf movement. The local culture, “the deaf world,” was characterized by close proximity and a highly charged ideological moral climate. With the central argument that strong integration breeds comparisons and examinations, we conclude that the integration of parents creates a situation perfect for drawing comparisons, creating not only cohesion, but also renewed separatist distinctions, expressed in terms of moral examinations, competition and envy. Studying the content and details of comparisons in any given field makes the particular morality that is bred, fed, and elaborated obvious.

This paper considers some of possible implications of emigrants’ visits back home. Alfred Schütz’s seminal paper “The Homecomer” provides a theoretical framework for analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews with young Polish people living in Germany. An attempt is made to explore why and how – typical for the emigration processes – a more critical and objective image of country of origin and a growing feeling of strangeness at home deepens emigrants’ capacity for reflection on their life and identity. Consequently, most of them painfully realise that they will never fully assimilate with the country of immigration and they no longer find themselves comfortable in their country of origin. This has crucial implications for their biography. The collected empirical data show that some of emigrants plan to immediately return to Poland in order to save their emotional relationship with those back home. Others find their homeland poorer and less prospective in comparison to Germany. This legitimate their residence abroad. And finally, the negative homecoming experience can perform a very important function in the narrators’ common-sense argumentation, i.e., this should reduce psychological and biographical costs of their emigration career

The second part of the article touches on the analysis of the autonomy of a work of art and connected with it – its hermeneutical identity. For Gadamer, this hermeneutical identity of the work of art is characterized by three main features: The first, and principal feature, is the consistency of a repetition of the same features of each presentation that is, the repetition of an established truth concerning reality. The second feature is the continuity of the presentation of the work of art in relation to the tradition of its interpretation. While the third feature contained within a work of art is its occasional character, that is, the specific reason for its origin and its purpose.

The aim of my article is to examine tattoo acquisition in the context of an emerging individualized society in contemporary Poland. The theoretical framework of my project will be the widespread sociological conception of individualization process according to which structural and cultural changes – specific to late modernity – are dissembedding individuals from traditional frames of reference, giving them unprecedented scope of freedom, but simultaneously making them responsible for shaping their own identity. Referring to empirical data gathered during my research, I will try to show the role played by tattoo acquisition in the broader process of identity formation. I will distinguish two main moments of identity work: the moment of expression, where tattoo acquisition serves as a tool enabling individuals to articulate and express their own identity, and the performative moment, where tattoo acquisitions enables them to shape and negotiate their identity. In this article I will focus on two different aspects of identity work oriented towards self-creation: on creative transformation and aestetization of one’s own body and on negotiation of personal freedom and agency mediated by tattooing.
