Opis:
The products from raw materials of plant origin are a great source of the biologically active compounds with a wide range of activities and properties, especially antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. Typically, bioactive compounds of plants are produced as secondary metabolites and are sourced mostly as essential oils and hydrosoles. Lately, new, unique and innovative product name fluidolat® are developed by Śmigielski and his co-workers at the Technical University of Lodz [1,2]. These are components which unquestionably has many positive aspects, mostly high application potential, health benefit, biological activity and sensory value. In this article general characteristic of essential oils, hydrosoles, and fluidolat®, as well as a few words about their application and biological activity are presented.

Opis:
Studies on the chemical modifications of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil hydrodistillation process (HD) by using 5% citric acid (CA-HD) and 5% trisodium citrate (TSC-HD) ase water phase were performed. Composition of essential oils obtained in conventional and modified conditions was analyzed by gas chromatography with mass selective detector method (GC-MS) and compared. Antioxidant activity of all essential oils was determined spectrophotometrically by using DPPH radical scavenging method. It was found that applied modifications of hydrodistillation process enhanced yields and antioxidant activity and the best results were obtained using 5% citric acid as a modifier. Effect of this modification on fungicidal activity of essential oils against 8 various fungi strains (Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium culmorum, Phythophtora cactorum, Rhizoctonia solani, Phythophtora infestans, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Ascosphaera apis) was also determined and in most cases enhanced activity was observed.

Opis:
Effect of enzymatic pretreatment before hydrodistillation process on yield and composition of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil was studied. Results obtained by using two selected commercial enzymes applied in food and beverage industry were compared. Control process with non-enzymatic pretreatment in analogous conditions was also performed for proper interpretation of results. Application of gas chromatography with mass selective detector (GC-MS) enabled analysis and comparison of essential oils composition. Moreover, total phenolic content (TPC) was determined spectrophotometrically in post-processing hydrolates, which are also valuable products e.g. for cosmetic applications. Modifications of isolation process by pretreatment with selected enzymes resulted in significant increase in essential oil yields in comparison to conventional hydrodistillation and control process with non-enzymatic pretreatment in analogous conditions. No substantial changes in the composition of obtained essential oils were observed. In post-processing hydrolates higher values of total phenolic content (TPC) were found both after enzymatic and non-enzymatic pretreatment.

Opis:
The essential oil of celery (Apium graveolens) is characterized by exceptionally high content of alkylphthalides. The mentioned compounds exhibit a number of biological effects (including hypotensive, lipid-lowering, neuroprotective, and cytotoxic) and are also responsible for distinctive aroma of the plant. In the current work, parameters of conventional hydrodistillation (HD) and simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE) were optimized to obtain phthalide-enriched fractions of celery seeds. A positive correlation was shown between hydrodistillation time and improved essential oil and phthalide yields. The 6-h HD of comminuted seeds yielded essential oil (2.9%) with a higher total phthalide content (51%), as compared to the samples collected after 1.5-3.0 h, which gave 2.4-2.7% of oil containing 24.6-39.2% of total phthalides. The oil contained sedanenolide (36.7%), 3-n-butylphthalide (13.1%), and sedanolide (1.1%). A further increase in the total phthalide content was achieved by omitting the size reduction step prior to hydrodistillation (68.8%) and utilization of the salting-out effect (84.3%). Enzyme pretreatment had a negligible effect on essential oil and phthalide yields. The change of distillation mode from HD to SDE significantly increased the oil yield of whole seeds (from 2.8 to 5.8% for 6 h processing) while maintaining its high phthalide content (62.5%), which translated to an increase in the total phthalide yield from 19.4 to 36.0 g/kg.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to obtain extracts of Humulus lupulus L hop cones of the Marynka variety and to evaluate their antibacterial properties against three strains of gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 10536, E. coli IPS and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) and against two strains of gram-positive bacteria (Enterococcus hirae ATCC 10541 and Bacillus cereus ATCC 12826). The research material consisted of dried Marynka variety hop cones, from which extracts in the form essential oil (EO), infusion and decoction were obtained. EO was obtained in the process of hydrodistillation. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was evaluated by the plate-cylinder diffusion method against the tested gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Diverse antibacterial activity of water extracts of H. lupulus L hop cones of the Marynka variety (essential oil, infusion and decoction) on the tested bacteria was demonstrated, with higher sensitivity of gram-positive than gram-negative bacteria. The highest resistance to hop extracts was demonstrated by P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The best antibacterial properties were demonstrated by the essential oil at a concentration of 2.0 %. In the group of gram-positive bacteria, E. hirae ATCC 10541 was more sensitive to EO, and E. coli IPS in the group of gram-negative bacteria. In the case of B. cereus ATCC 12826, the sensitivity to infusions and decoctions of hop cones requires further investigation, as the obtained large zones of growth inhibition were unstable.

Opis:
The influence of the time of distillation on the content and composition of essential oil isolated from wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum L.) by hydrodistillation was investigated. The GC-MS data showed that the essential oil was rich in carvacrol (30.90–46.16%) and its biogenetic precursors γ-terpinene (5.72–9.09%) and p-cymene (4.51–13.46%). Other constituents identified in significant amounts were β-caryophyllene, carvacrol methyl ether and (-)-β-bisabolene. On the basis of the obtained data it was proved that time of distillation had no effect on essential oil content. Moreover, there was no significant effect of the distillation time on the content of essential oil constituents found in the experiment.
Zbadano wpływ czasu destylacji na zawartość i skład olejku eterycznego wyizolowanego z macierzanki piaskowej (Thymus serpyllum L.) na drodze hydrodestylacji. Analiza GCMS wykazała, że olejek eteryczny zawierał dużo karwakrolu (30,90–46,16%), γ-terpinenu (5,72–9,09%) i p-cymenu (4,51–13,46%). Pozostałe składniki zidentyfikowane w znacznych ilościach w olejku to β-kariofilen, eter metylowy karwakrolu i (-)-β-bisabolen. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników wykazano, że czas destylacji nie miał wpływu na zawartość olejku eterycznego, co więcej nie miał też istotnego wpływu na zawartość głównych składników olejku.
