Opis:: The paper presents the results of field and laboratory studies aimed at studying the processes of oil transformation in the soil under the influence of natural biological processes during a two-year period on artificially created old spills. The soil of the study area was characterized as meadow. The high toxic effect of oil was confirmed, which was expressed in the complete extinction of soil flora and fauna. Despite the low oil content in the soil (less than 5%), soil self-purification processes were not observed. Moreover, the high sorption properties of the soil, the violation of the water regime and the lack of aeration led to the “conservation” of oil and significantly slowed down the natural processes of its biodegradation. This was confirmed by a slight change in the content of oil products a year after the start of the experiment, as well as the presence of free oil in the pore space of the studied soil.

Opis:: Public crude oil fields in Wonocolo sub-district were active from 1942 until now and have inadequately operated. The aims of this research were to measure the level of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) pollution and their distribution in soil and surface water at the Wonocolo public crude oil fields. Twelve composite soil samples were collected from uncontaminated and contaminated sites of old well (OW), transportation line (T), and refinery area (R) at the depths of 0–30 cm, 30–60 cm, and 60–90 cm. The composite surface water sample was obtained from two points with different distances from the river side. TPH from soil and surface water samples were extracted using soxhlet and gravimetric method. Quantification of TPH was performed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometer. From the results of this study, it was concluded that soils and surface water are contaminated by TPH of 119.80–107,190 µg/g and 211,025.73 µg/L, respectively. TPH is clearly located in the upper of 0–30 cm depth at OW, T, and R sites (52,328.14–107,189.63 µg/g). These concentrations exceeded the soil quality standard of TPH and classified as category A for human hazard risk. The findings from this study show that there are considerable health risks which are potentially poisonous to humans in the local area. We recommend that remediation could be conducted using biological methods to reduce TPH pollution level.

Opis:: The aim of the study was to assess the impact of diesel oil on the activity of oxidoreductases in loamy sand, and to evaluate effect of selenium addition in the restoration of homeostasis of soil contaminated with diesel oil. The experiment was carried out under laboratory conditions with loamy sand. 0.05 mmol/kg of selenium (Se(IV) or Se(VI)), and diesel oil in the doses of 2, 10 and 50 g/kg were added to the soil samples. In soil treated with selenium and diesel oil activities of dehydrogenases, catalase, o-diphenol oxidase and nitrate reductase were measured on 1, 7, 14, 28, 56 and 112 day of the experiment. Contamination with diesel oil did not cause significant changes only in the activity of o-diphenol oxidase. The highest increase was observed in activity of dehydrogenases. Selenium limited hydrocarbons impact on activity of soil oxidoreductases, especially in loamy sand with diesel oil in the dose of 10 g/kg. Obtained results showed that this effect was reduced after treatment with selenium in both oxidation states but for nitrate reductase and catalase this reduction was reported after application of Se(VI) and Se(IV), respectively.

Opis:: The impacts of industrial wastewater contamination on the geotechnical properties of clayey soil have been studied in the research presented in this paper. The contaminant in question is industrial wastewater released from Thi-Qar oil refinery as a by-product of production, and the soil samples obtained from Thi-Qar oil refinery plant in Al-Nassyriah (a city located in the south of Iraq). The geotechnical properties of contaminated soil samples were compared with those of intact soil to measure the effects of such a contaminant. The soil samples were obtained from three locations in the study area; representing the highly contaminated area, the slightly contaminated area, and the intact area used as a reference for comparison of test results. The results of the tests showed that the contaminant causes an increase of natural moisture content, field unit weight, Atterberg’s limits, and maximum dry unit weight, as well as an increase of the compression index and the coefficient of vertical consolidation. Also, the contaminant causes a decrease in specific gravity, the optimum moisture content initial void ratio, the swelling index, the coefficient of permeability, and cohesion between soil particles.
Niniejsza praca została poświęcona badaniu wpływów zanieczyszczeń ściekami na właściwości geotechniczne próbek gleby gliniastej. Czynnikiem zanieczyszczającym są ścieki przemysłowe, uwalniane z rafinerii Thi-Qar jako produkty uboczne produkcji i wyrzucane bezpośrednio na glebę, powodując jej zanieczyszczenie. Ten produkt uboczny będzie dalej określany jako węglowodory ropopochodne (THP), w celu uniknięcia złożoności omawianych wpływów poszczególnych składników ścieków przemysłowych na właściwości geotechniczne gleby. Próbki gleby zostały pobrane z rafinerii Thi-Qar w mieście Al.-Nassyriah, położonym na południu Iraku, o współrzędnych geograficznych (N 305916.2, E 0461332.8). Zanieczyszczone i nierozłożone próbki gleby zostały pobrane w trzech miejscach na badanym obszarze oraz na trzech głębokościach w każdym z tych miejsc. W celu zbadania wpływu różnych stężeń węglowodorów ropopochodnych na właściwości geotechniczne gleby, przeprowadzono badanie trzech lokalizacji o bardzo zanieczyszczonym obszarze (NA1), nieznacznie zanieczyszczonym obszarze (NA2) oraz nienaruszonym obszarze (NA3).

Opis:: W artykule opisano obowiązujące regulacje prawne w zakresie oznaczania zawartości węglowodorów w próbkach gleby. Zebrano i przedstawiono dopuszczalne graniczne wartości stężeń węglowodorów w glebie, jak również metodyki referencyjne zalecane w pomiarach i badaniach zanieczyszczeń węglowodorowych w tym elemencie środowiska. Przeprowadzony przegląd dopuszczalnych granicznych zawartości węglowodorów w glebie dowiódł, że wartości dozwolonych stężeń węglowodorów są zróżnicowane w szerokim zakresie, w zależności od rodzaju oznaczanej substancji. Przegląd regulacji prawnych ukazał także, że podstawową metodyką referencyjną jest chromatografia gazowa (GC) w zakresie oznaczania węglowodorów alifatycznych oraz wysokosprawna chromatografia cieczowa (HPLC) do oznaczania wielopierścieniowych węglowodorów aromatycznych (WWA).
The article describes the current legislation regarding the determination of hydrocarbons concentration in soil samples. In the paper the permitted limits of hydrocarbons concentration in the soil was collected and presented, as well as methods recommended for the reference measurement and testing of hydrocarbon contamination in the environmental medium. A survey of acceptable limits of hydrocarbons concentration in soil, showed that the limit of concentrations of hydrocarbons vary widely, depending on the type of determined substance. Review of legal regulations also showed, that the primary reference methodology, is gas chromatography (GC) for the determination of aliphatic hydrocarbons, and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Opis:: Węglowodory to szeroka grupa związków organicznych, które niejednokrotnie klasyfikowane są jako substancje szkodliwe, toksyczne oraz mające negatywny wpływ na środowisko a także zdrowie i życie ludzi. Istnieje wiele metod oznaczania zawartości tych związków w próbkach środowiskowych. W artykule przedstawiono wybrane metody analityczne, które mogą być stosowane do oznaczania zawartości węglowodorów w próbkach środowiskowych. Omówiono również wyniki badań próbek gleb w różnym stopniu zanieczyszczonych węglowodorami oraz wyniki badań próbek rzeczywistych, w tym o złożonej matrycy pochodzących z terenów działalności górnictwa naftowego i gazownictwa, uzyskane poprzez zastosowanie wybranych metod analitycznych. Na podstawie analizy otrzymanych wyników badań dokonano następnie oceny przydatności wybranych metod analitycznych do określania stopnia zanieczyszczenia próbek środowiskowych węglowodorami.
Hydrocarbons are a broad group of organic compounds, often classified as hazardous, toxic substances having a negative impact on the environment, as well as on people’s health and life. There are many methods for the determination of these compounds in environmental samples. This article presents selected analytical methods that can be used, for the determination of hydrocarbons in environmental samples. It also discusses the results of tests performed with use of selected analytical methods, on samples of soils contaminated with hydrocarbons in varying degrees, and the results of tests on real samples, including samples with complex matrices derived from areas of oil and gas industry activity. Assessment of the suitability of selected analytical methods for determining the degree of contamination of environmental samples by hydrocarbons was conducted, based on the analysis of the research results.

Opis:: Wykorzystanie komunalnych osadów ściekowych na cele przyrodnicze było dotychczas, oprócz składowania, najpowszechniejszym sposobem ich zagospodarowania. W ostatnich latach wprowadzono jednak ograniczenia w związku ze składowaniem odpadów zawierających znaczne ilości substancji organicznych. Komunalne osady ściekowe to w głównej mierze masa organiczna, którą po odpowiednim przetworzeniu można wykorzystać jako produkt poprawiający właściwości i strukturę gleb. Jak wykazały badania, komunalne osady ściekowe mogą zawierać pewne ilości wielopierścieniowych węglowodorów aromatycznych (WWA), które zanieczyszczają gleby tymi związkami poprzez doglebowe zastosowanie osadów. W artykule omówiono wyniki badań zawartości wielopierścieniowych węglowodorów aromatycznych w osadach ściekowych, surowych i przetworzonych, pochodzących z jednej oczyszczalni ścieków komunalnych. Wskazały one na znaczne zanieczyszczenie związkami z grupy WWA surowych osadów ściekowych. Zastosowanie stabilizacji poprzez higienizację osadów wapnem palonym spowodowało zmniejszenie stężeń WWA oznaczanych w przetworzonych osadach. Wyniki badań porównano z wartościami dopuszczalnymi zgodnymi z projektami Komisji Europejskiej z 2000 i 2010 r.
The use of municipal sewage sludge on agriculture was in this day, in addition to storage, the most common way of their utilizations. In recent years, however, the limitation of storage of waste containing significant amounts of organic substances have been introduced. Municipal sewage sludge is mainly organic matter. After appropriate processing it can be used as a product that improves properties and structure of soil. Municipal sewage sludge may contain, according to the research, include certain amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which could determine a danger contamination of soil with these compounds by soil application of sludge. The article discusses the results of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs in sewage sludge, raw and processed, coming from one municipal sewage treatment plant. The results show a significant contamination of PAHs compounds of raw sewage sludge. Stabilization by hygienisation of quicklime show a decrease concentrations of PAHs in designated processed sediments. Results of the study were compared with the limit values of the projects of the European Commission in year 2000 and 2010.

Opis:: Sediment samples were collected from the coastal area of the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone of Musa Bay. The samples were analyzed to determine the degree of hydrocarbon contamination and identify the sources of PAHs which were evaluated by employing the ratios of specific PAHs compounds and principal component analysis (PCA). The levels of TPH concentration in the studied area were relatively moderate compared to the world-wide chronically oil-contaminated locations. The concentration of total PAHs was lower than those in other parts of the Musa Bay but approached the NOAA sediment quality guideline value.

Opis:: Wprowadzenie. Miód jest synonimem zdrowej żywności. Jego jakość jest m.in. związana ze stanem środowiska. Pomimo zaprzestania produkcji i stosowania, w środowisku wykrywa się nadal pozostałości trwałych węglowodorów chlorowanych. Część z nich jest klasyfikowana jako związki rakotwórcze dla człowieka. Ciągłe narażenie pszczół na działanie różnego rodzaju środków chemicznych nie pozostaje bez wpływu na wytwarzany przez nie produkt. Z tego względu znajomość stopnia zanieczyszczenia miodu może mieć istotne znaczenie dla zdrowia człowieka. Cel badań. Celem pracy była ocena stopnia zanieczyszczenia miodu związkami należącymi do trwałych zanieczyszczeń organicznych. Materiał i metody. Badaniom poddano sześć rodzajów miodu oraz zebrane po okresie kwitnienia kwiatostany rzepaku i glebę z pól położonych w okolicy miejscowości Przybysław i Pęczerzyno w województwie zachodniopomorskim. Zakres badań obejmował oznaczanie zawartości pestycydów chloroorganicznych: α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, heptachlor, aldryna, dieldryna, endryna, izomer B epoksydu heptachloru, p,p’-DDT, o,p’-DDT, p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDD, o,p’-DDD; non-orto (PCB 77, PCB 81, PCB 126, PCB 169), mono-orto (PCB 105, PCB 114, PCB 156, PCB 157) oraz kongenerów wskaźnikowych PCB (PCB 28, PCB 52, PCB 101, PCB 118, PCB 138, PCB 153, PCB 180). Oznaczenia wykonano metodą chromatografii gazowej sprzężonej ze spektrometrią mas (GC-MS). Wyniki. Spośród analizowanych pestycydów chloroorganicznych w miodach największe stężenie notowano dla heptachloru (3,89 ng/g m.m.), natomiast zawartość kongenerów wskaźnikowych kształtowała się w zakresie od ilości śladowych poniżej LOQ do 0,02 ng/g m.m. Zawartości kongenerów non- i mono-orto PCB w miodach były stosunkowo niskie, osiągając maksymalnie 0,02 ng/g m.m. Wnioski. Zawartości analizowanych związków chloroorganicznych w badanym materiale zależały od miejsca pobrania próbek, przy czym najwyższe stężenia notowano w kwiatostanach rzepaku. Stwierdzono znacznie większe zanieczyszczenie gleby i kwiatostanów rzepaku pochodzących z okolicy Pęczerzyna, jednak nie miało to wyraźnego wpływu na zawartość związków w miodzie. Najmniej zanieczyszczeń chloroorganicznych zawierał miód gryczany. Zawartości oznaczanych związków w badanych miodach były na niskim poziomie i nie stanowiły zagrożenia dla zdrowia konsumentów.
Background. Honey is a synonymous of healthy food. Its quality is associated with the state of the environment. Although persistent chlorinated hydrocarbons are no longer produced nor used, their residues are still detected in the environment. Some of these compounds are carcinogenic to humans. Continuous exposure of bees to various types of chemicals impacts also their products. Therefore, knowledge of the degree of contamination of honey may have important implications for human health. Objective. The aim of this study was to assess the degree of honey contamination with POPs. Material and methods. Six species of honey were analyzed, as well as rape inflorescences and soil coming from the villages Pęczerzyno and Przybysław in Western Pomerania, Poland. The scope of investigation included organochlorine pesticides: α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, heptachlor, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor epoxid isomer B, p,p’-DDT, o,p’-DDT, p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDD, o,p’-DDD, dioxin-like non-ortho PCB congeners (PCB 77, PCB 81, PCB 126, PCB 169), dioxin-like monoortho PCB congeners (PCB 105, PCB 114, PCB 156, PCB 157) and indicator PCB congeners (PCB 28, PCB 52, PCB 101, PCB 118, PCB 138, PCB 153, PCB 180). Chromatographic separation was performed using gas chromatography (HP 6890) coupled with mass spectrometry (HP 5973). Results. Among the analyzed organochlorine pesticides the highest concentration in honeys was noticed for heptachlor (3.89 ng/g mm). The content of indicator PCB congeners in honey ranged from below LOQ values to 0.02 ng/g w.w. The content of non- and mono-ortho PCB congeners in honey were relatively low, reaching a maximum 0.02 ng/g w.w. Conclusions. The content of the analyzed organochlorine compounds in the material depended on the location of sampling sites, and the highest concentrations were found in rape inflorescences. The soil and rape inflorescences from Pęczerzyno were the most contaminated with POPs, but it had no clear impact on the content of the compounds in honey. Buckwheat honey was significantly (p<0,05) least contaminated with POPs. The content of the examined POPs in honeys was low and safe for consumers health.

Opis:: PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are widespread in the natural environment. They are suspected to have mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic effect on our organisms. Production of wholesome and high quality vegetables does not necessarily involve selection of adequate farmlands or substrates used for vegetable growing. Combustion processes are a source of PAHs in the soil and air. Excessive levels of PAHs are accumulated when the balance between their decomposition in soil and supply from other sources is disrupted. The objective of the present research has been to evaluate the effect of anthracene and pyrene on the concentration of selected trace elements in butter lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), cultivar Vilmorin, grown on substrates with different nutrient abundance. A pot experiment in four replications was carried out twice in the spring of 2007 and 2008. The pots were maintained in a greenhouse at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. Lettuce was grown under the minimum (optimum) and triple (II fertilization level) substrate abundance in nutrients. In the second variant o the experiment, when the nutrient abundance was elevated, nitrogen was split into two doses: 2/3 of the whole rate were added before planting lettuce seedlings, and 1/3 of the rate was introduced 10 days afterwards. In the first variant, when the nutrient abundance was minimal, all of the nitrogen was added in a single dose. Spraying the lettuce plants with anthracene (ANT), pyrene (PYR0 or their mixture started 10 days after planting. Foliar introduction of the tested PAHs continued for 25 days (in the amount of 1.8 cm3 day–1 at a concentration of 100 mg dm–3) until the vegetative season finished. At the same time, an identical total amount of the PAHs was added to soil as aqueous solution, at 7-day intervals, according to the same pattern. Determinations of the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Cr, Zn, Mn) was performed with the ASA method, having first mineralised (HClO4+HCl+HNO3) the plant material which had been dried at 60oC. The determinations were compared with certified material (CTA-VTL-2). Concentrations of the trace elements in butter lettuce were significantly varied depending on the experimental factors. A more abundant substrate significantly raised the levels of Cd, Zn and Mn, but had no effect on concentrations of Cu, Ni and Cr. The way the PAHs were applied did not have any influence on modifications in the determined levels of the metals. Out of the two analysed PAHs, anthracene, especially when applied to soil, increased the concentrations of Zn nd Cr in lettuce leaves.
WWA (wielopierścieniowe węglowodory aromatyczne) są związkami powszechnie występującymi w środowisku. Przypisuje się im działanie mutagenne, rakotwórcze i teratogenne na nasze organizmy. Produkcja zdrowych i dobrych jakościowo warzyw nie zawsze jest związana z wyborem odpowiednich terenów lub podłoży do ich uprawy. Źródłem WWA zarówno w glebie, jak i w powietrzu są procesy spalania. Do nadmiernego ich nagromadzenia dochodzi na skutek zachwiania równowagi między rozkładem w glebie a przychodem z innych źródeł. Celem badań była ocena wpływu antracenu oraz pirenu na zawartość wybranych pierwiastków śladowych w sałacie masłowej (Lactuca sativa L.) odmiany Vilmorin uprawianej w podłożach o zróżnicowanej zasobności. Eksperyment wazonowy w 4 powtórzeniach przeprowadzono dwukrotnie wiosną w latach 2007-2008 w hali wegetacyjnej UWM w Olsztynie. Sałatę uprawiano w warunkach o minimalnej (optymalnej) zasobności podłoża w składniki pokarmowe oraz 3-krotnie zwiększonej (II – poziom nawożenia). Azot wprowadzano w dwóch dawkach przy zwiększonej zasobności podłoża: 2/3 dawki przed posadzeniem rozsady, a 1/3 dawki po 10 dniach od posadzenia oraz w całości w przypadku pierwszego poziomu nawożenia. Oprysk roślin antracenem (ANT) oraz pirenem (PYR) i ich mieszaniną rozpoczęto po 10 dniach od posadzenia. Dolistne wprowadzanie wybranych WWA trwało przez 25 dni (w ilooeci 1,8 cm3 doba–1 o stężeniu 100 mg dm–3) do końca okresu wegetacji. Jednocześnie doglebowo dostarczono sumaryczną ilość WWA w takim samym układzie 1 raz na 7 dni w wodnym rozcieńczonym roztworze. Zawartość wybranych metali ciężkich (Cd, Cu, Ni, Cr, Zn, Mn) oznaczano metodą ASA po mineralizacji (HClO4+HCl+HNO3) wysuszonego w temp. 60°C materiału roślinnego. Oznaczenia wykonano wobec materiału certyfikowanego (CTA-VTL-2). Zawartość pierwiastków śladowych w sałacie masowej była istotnie zróżnicowana w zależności od czynników doświadczalnych. Zasobniejsze podłoże wpływało istotnie na zwiększenie zawartości Cd, Zn i Mn, nie miało zaś wpływu na koncentrację Cu, Ni i Cr. Sposób aplikacji WWA nie miał wpływu na zmiany zawartości oznaczonych metali. Spośród testowanych WWA, szczególnie antracen aplikowany doglebowo zwiększał zawartość Zn i Cr w liściach testowanej rośliny.

Opis:: The paper presents studies results of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contaminations migration in sandy formations on the post-industrial area in Katowice in aspect their horizontal migration between aeration and saturation zones. In all investigated soil samples were determined mineral oils (>C12), gasoline (C6-C12) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) content and were also defined coefficient of filtration. Both mineral oils and gasoline belongs to organic liquids group lighter than water. Researches were supplemented with simulation of ground and underground water contamination state, round investigated area and also migration of petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contaminations model in examined grounds. The correlation between seasonal position of underground water level and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contaminations content in ground vertical profile was also showed. Besides variations of filtration rate in relation to petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) contaminations content was presented, as well.

Opis:: Herbata jest jednym z najczęściej spożywanych napojów w świecie. Powszechnie uważa się, że picie herbaty może być korzystne dla zdrowia. Obecne w herbatach pozostałości pewnych zanieczyszczeń mogą mieć jednak niekorzystny wpływ na zdrowie. Główne zanieczyszczenia, to metale ciężkie, fluor, pestycydy, a nawet dioksyny. Posiadające dużą powierzchnię liście herbaty mogą zostać zanieczyszczone WWA obecnymi w atmosferze. Procesy przetwórcze mogą również wprowadzać WWA do gotowego produktu. Celem pracy było określenie stopnia zanieczyszczenia herbat czarnych, zielonych, czerwonych i białych przez WWA. W trakcie badań oznaczono zawartość 23 WWA, tj 16 WWA wg EPA oraz 15 wg EU w 18 gatunkach herbat i ich naparów. Procedura analityczna została oparta na ekstrakcji heksanem WWA z suszu w łaźni ultradźwiękowej oraz ekstrakcji cykloheksanem w układzie ciecz-ciecz z naparów. Całkowita zawartość 23 WWA wyniosła w suszu od 221,9 µg/kg do 2945,5 µg/kg, w tym 2,7 µg/kg do 63,1 µg/kg benzo[a]pirenu. Pod względem średniej zawartości WWA analizowane gatunki herbat można uporządkować w następującej kolejności: herbaty czarne < herbaty czerwone< herbaty zielone< herbaty białe. Najbardziej zanieczyszczony był jednak jeden z gatunków herbat czarnych, zarówno pod względem całkowitej zawartości 23 WWA jak i poziomu BaP. Do naparów przenikało średnio 12,6% WWA zawartych w suszu. Dominowały w naparach WWA o 2, 3 i 4pierścieniach, podczas gdy bardziej toksyczne związki występowały w śladowych ilościach. Stężenie 23 WWA i BaP w naparach mieściło się w granicach od 332,5 ng/dm3 do 2245,9 ng/dm3 i 0,35 ng/dm3 do 18,7 ng/dm3.
Tea is the one of most widely consumed beverage in the world. It is generally believed that tea consumption might have health promoting properties. But residues of certain chemical compounds might impose a health threat on tea drinkers. The main contaminants are heavy metals, fluoride, pesticides and even dioxins. Tea lives which possess a high surface area can be contaminated with atmospheric PAHs. The manufacturing processes may also introduce PAHs into tea lives. The aim of his study was to determine the contamination of black, green, red and white teas by PAHs. In this investigation, content of 23 PAH, i.e 16 EPA PAH and 15 EU PAH were determined in 18 brands of tea and its infusions. The analytical procedure was based on ultrasonic extraction for dried tea and liquid-liquid extraction for infusions. All samples were cleaned up by florisil cartridge. The total content of 23 PAH varied between 22.9 µg/kg to 2945.5 µg/kg and 2.7 µg/kg to 63,1 µg/kg µg/kg for BaP. The analysed tea samples showed an increasing presence of PAH in the following order (mean value): black tea< red tea< green tea< white tea. However the highest content of PAH was found in the one brand of black tea bag both in sum of PAH and BaP content. During tea infusion 1.,6% of total PAHs contained in tea was released into the beverage. The dominant PAHs in tea infusion were 2, 3 and 4 rings PAH, while the most toxic compounds were found at trace amounts. The concentrations of total 23 PAHs and BaP in tea infusions ranged from 332.5 ng/dm3 to 2245.9 ng/dm3 and 0.35 ng/dm3 to 18.7 ng/dm3 respectively.

The clays were characterized using XRD, optical microscopy (thin sections) and CEC measurements. The contaminated samples were analyzed using ATD-GC-MS, Rock Eval and XRD. Volatilization of the fluid phase hydrocarbon was monitoring for 663 days. The quantity of volatilized hydrocarbon compounds reached 50.0–65.0% at the end of the experiment. All of the analyses indicate hydrocarbon pollution of the clay layers after the volatilization process. The gross compositions of the fluid and the sorbed phases are different; the total amount of cycloalkanes among the sorbed hydrocarbons is very low. The dominant sorbed components are toluene, xylenes, nC9, nC10, nC11 and nC7. Cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, benzene, nC12 and nC13 also occur in lower concentrations. The geochemical and XRD results indicate that adsorption onto the external surfaces of the clay minerals was the main sorption process.
