Opis:
The quantity and quality of organic carbon were studied in bottom sediments of two small, shallow, polymictic dam reservoirs located in SE Poland: Zalew Zemborzycki (ZZ) and Brody Iłżeckie (BI). Total content of organic carbon (Corg), and its fractions have been determined. The maps of Corg spatial distribution have been compiled. Wide ranges of sedimentary Corg were noted as well as differences between two reservoirs in respect of its content and spatial distribution. The Corg content in the sediments showed a longitudinal zonation pattern in the ZZ and a transverse one in the BI. The composition of sedimentary Corg showed the highest percentage of the insoluble fraction followed by humus acid fraction and the lowest – hemicelluloses fraction. In the humus acid fraction, fulvic acids overbalanced humic acids.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to find the effect of water regimes on soil sorptivity and humic components of organic matter. Physicochemical parameters were also determined. Steady state cumulative infiltration was the highest (60-100 mm) in non-irrigated upland soil and the lowest (8-10 mm) in waterlogged soil. The highest sorptivity of 4.0-4.5mmmin-1/2 was found in nonirrigated upland soil and the lowest in seasonally waterlogged soil (1.0-1.5 mm min-1/2). Organic carbon content of all soils was low (<1%), EC values were also low (< 4 dS m-1). Saturated moisture was high in waterlogged soil. The non-irrigated upland soils had a higher fraction of fulvic acid (0.15-0.2%), due to which they were more capable of infiltration, whereas waterlogged soils had a greater fraction of insoluble humic acid (0.29-0.35%) and exhibited less cumulative infiltration. Sorptivity decreased as the clay content, pH, EC, porosity and humic acid content of the soil increased.

Opis:
Humic and fulvic acids are important materials for the health of the soil. This is related to the capability of humic and fulvic acids as chelating agent for pollutant in soil. The relationship between humic and fulvic acids with that of the soil properties is an important aspect to determine the characteristics of soil. Furthermore, production of humic and fulvic acids is a time-consuming process with several stages. Regarding this problem, the selection of sample size to study humic and fulvic acids is important. The relationship between the soil properties was analysed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis, which is regarded as a solution to solve the analysis of complicated problems by offering a powerful approach. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between humic and fulvic acids, in terms of their mineral and physicochemical properties using the PLS method. The study was carried out in West Java, Indonesia. The results showed that the relationship between the chemical, physical, mineral contents with humic and fulvic acids, affected the negative and positive aspects of the relationship. Humic acids had a weak to good model category (0.269–0.940) with regards to the soil properties, and fulvic acids had a moderate model category (0.495–0.603) against all soil properties. Thus, the PLS method can solve a problem in study relationship between the soil properties with small sample and can help in understanding the soil characteristics in general.

The study was conducted on 14 moorsh formations taken from differently secondary transformed peat-moorsh soils. For each sample the amount of soil carbon oxidised during 2 hours with 0,005 M Kmn04 at pH = 2,5-2,6 was measured. Generally the influence of the state of secondary transformation on the amount of soil organic matter susceptibility to oxidation was noticed, especially for strongly and very strongly transformed soils. Moreover, the content of fulvic and humic acids was analysed simultaneously. The best correlation between the fulvic to humic acids ratio and organic carbon susceptibility to chemical oxidation appeared for soils of W1 >0,60

Opis:
The use of salt to malt ice has definite effects on the environment. Some of these environmental effects are: soil erosion, environmental pollution, changes in mineral nutrition or general destruction of the physiological processes of plants. This use of salt has a negative impact on roadside vegetation and sustainability. The objective of the presented study was to investigate the effects of fulvic and humic organic acids as well as the calcium on growth and chlorophyll content of seven tree species grown under salt stress. Two year old seedlings of – Acer campestre, Aer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala, Ginkgo biloba, Platanus ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' and Tilia cordata were planted to plastic pots (2 dm3 vol). They were planted outdoors in a growing medium compound which had high sphagnum peat, grainy sand and composted pine bark. Salinity stress was maintained by irrigating plants with tap water containing 3.3 g NaCl/L H2O. Different organic fertilizers were used to redce the risk of nutritional stress caused by salinity. Salinity in the growing medium limited the growth of two maple species and littleleaf linden. In other species such A. campestre, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, G. biloba there were no significant differences when compared to the control group of plants. Severe leaf damage was observed on A. paltanoides where leaf burning was seen on up to 30%of the leaf blade surface. The response to salinity of other species like A. pseudoplatanus, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, and T. cordata was less evident. Humic organic acids applied alone to the growing medium improved the growth of all the maple species when compared to the control group. A calcium had the best effect on the growth of all tested trees except A. tataricum ssp. ginnala and G. biloba. The chlorophyll content index (CCI) differed according to the growing medium treatment and the species. The total CCI ranged from 9.62 for the control plants P. ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' to 52.64 for G. biloba which had been treated with a calcium. Application of organic fertilizers to the salt treated growing medium increased the CCI in many species.

The study presented here concentrates on the characteristics of the humous compounds of humic and fulvic acid fractions of ß-humus, originating from the typologically differentiated soils (podzolic soil and chernozem). The soils were chosen so as to emphasize differences between chemical structure and degree of aromatic nucleus condensation in the humous acids isolated from them. It was found that the structure of the humous substances isolated from the podzolic soil is characterised by the lowest degree of condensation of the aromatic nucleus and the lowest polymerisation, while the humous acids from the chernozem are characterised by the highest degree of condensation of the aromatic nucleus and the strongest polymerisation.

Opis:
The mechanism of coagulation with highly alkaline polyaluminum chlorides is well understood, but there is a lack of information on the effect of the presence of iron in these coagulants on the efficiency of purifying water with increased contents of natural organic matters among which humic substances are precursors of disinfection by-products. The dissolved forms of organic substances are the most problematic with regard to water treatment because major concern is the formation of disinfection by products resulting from reactions between dissolved organic matter fractions and disinfectants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of precursors of disinfection by-products removal using highly alkaline polyaluminium chlorides that had different alkalinity and iron content. In the water after the coagulation process a value of SUVA254 was calculated because this indicator correlates well with dissolved organic matter reactivity and disinfection by-products. The analysis of the obtained results showed that the effectiveness of dissolved organic matter removal was determined by the formation of colored iron-organic complexes.

Twenty different soils were investigated. The soils varied in their acidification degree, granulometric composition and a carbon content. The investigated soils were collected from arable land, meadows and forests. Humic compounds were extracted from the soil according to the Konowowa and Bielczikova's method. Very high quantitative and qualitative differentiation\was observed. It was related to the soil type and utilisation system. Low but differentiated quantities of humic compounds extracted by 0.05 M H2SO4 were found in the samples of the analysed soils. In the extract of pyrophosphate and sodium base as well as in the extract of sodium base, there were more fulvic acids than humic acids which was reflected in the narrow Ckh:Ckf ratio, particularly in the forest soils. In addition very high proportion of non-hydrolysing carbon was observed. Its content ranged from 52 to 84%. The highest proportion of this fraction was found in the soils agriculturally utilised.

Opis:
Nitrogen is one of the key components of plant production and the nitrogen requirement of the plant supplied either by mineral nitrogen applications or by biological nitrogen fixation. Although the atmosphere contain huge amount of N2, plants are not able to use that as a nitrogen source. Immediately usable forms of nitrogen are nitrate (NO3-) or ammonium (NH4+). The bonds between two nitrogen atoms are quite strong thus, reducing N2 gas to mineral nitrogen forms needs considerable high amount of energy. However, in biological life, microorganisms may convert N2 to mineral nitrogen sources in ambient temperature and pressure; therefore, biological nitrogen fixation is both environmental friendly and sustainable. Industrial nitrogen fixation and mineral fertilization leads both environmental pollution and economic impact. In this research, the effects of humic+fulvic acid (HFA) on nitrogen fixation were evaluated. For this purpose, a pot experiment in controlled environment was carried out. Peanut seeds were sawn in the hole prepared after dual application of HFA doses and rhizobium bacteria. Two times sampling was realized, one in the flowering and the other in harvest time. Results revealed that HFA application was effective on biologic nitrogen fixation; however, increasing HFA doses were adversely influenced determined parameters. Due to the soybean was cultivated as a forecrop at the field where the experimental soil is collected, nodulation was observed even at non-inoculated pots. Nevertheless, the higher values obtained from inoculated plants. Based on the results presented in the paper, HFA was positively effective on a number of parameters evaluated, yet the lower doses should be recommended.

The study site, 2700 m a.s.l., is located in the central Taiwan. A globally rare combination of the mean temperature (ca. 9.5 °C) and total annual precipitation (ca. 4100 mm) makes studies on pedogenic and edaphic processes of the moist soils in this area worthwhile. The study was undertaken to investigate distribution and characteristics of humic substances in this subalpine forest ecosystem. Fulvic acids comprised a higher total organic carbon fraction (1.8 to 25%) than humic acids (1.1 to 13.4%). Fulvic acids were more mobile and migrated downwards to deeper horizons. Comparatively, humic acids were distributed more in the surface horizons. The hu- mification index, based on E4/E6, showed that humification varied in different horizons even in the same profile. The AlogK and RF values indicate that the types of humic acids extracted from Tsuga forest soil are grouped as P or A types, whereas Rp or B types are in Picea forest soil, suggesting a high degree of humification of humic acids in such soils. Features of the absorption spectra were consistent with the classification of humic acids with A logK and RF values. Humification indices and humic acid types in these subalpine soils indicate that they are similar to acidic soils elsewhere with abundant rainfall and cold climate.

pedunculate oak
Opis:
Pedunculate oak is a species of major economic importance in Polish forests. This species seedlings constitute 18.9% of the nursery production in the country. One of the most widespread fungal disease these oaks face is the oak powdery mildew induced by Erysiphe alphitoides. Nursery production is on the lookout for environment−friendly means of plant protection as well as growth simulators capable of raising levels of productivity. Our objectives was to assess two preparation treatments regarded as biostimulators (registered as fertilisers under the names Apol−Humus and Apol−Hum Chelat) in the raising of seedlings of pedunculate oak in bare−root nursery conditions. The experiment included 6 variants with seedlings treated with the above agents, protected against mildew in the traditional way using Falcon 460 EC, treated with fertiliser and fungicide at the same time, or left as control specimens with no measures taken. All preparations were applied by means of foliar spraying 5 times in the course of the season. Survival of seedlings was then assessed at the season end, along with biometric features like root−collar diameter, length of main root and stem, dry mass of leaves and stem, and degree of oak powdery mildew attack. Results indicated curtailment of mildew infection of oak seedlings thanks to both of the biostimulators, albeit to a more limited extent than when fungicide was applied. No stimulation of seedling growth was achieved, however, though the most favourable biometric parameters characterised the oaks supplied with both biostimulator and fungicide. Significantly higher survival rate was noted for oaks offered effective protection against mildew, in the variants with the fungicide or with simultaneous application of Apol−Humus or Apol−Hum Chelat with Falcon. The research points to the two biostimulators under study (based on natural components) being suitable for use in the nursery production of pedunculate oak seedlings, with it being presumed that either or both can allow for reduction in amount of fungicide necessary to be used to safeguard seedlings against mildew.
