The thesis of this paper is that Polish humanities exists and is doing well in institutional sense but at the same time it has no social impact. That being so, on one hand we have dozens if not hundreds of units in which thousands of academics work. On the other hand we observe a limited external influence of these institutions and their employees. This impressive institutional and at the same time personal development seems to ignore external goals and functions or undervalue them in comparison to the institutions’ own development and functioning. There are many reasons for this, and not only academic institutions themselves should be blamed for it. It can be claimed that the modern world seems to see humanities as something inimportant, and it happens due to various conditions. One can see a parallel between the satae of the humanities and the state of the culture in general with the whole socio-cultural context, including the humanities. The article consists of five parts. The first one is about the reasons of the humanities institutional development. In the second part, I refer to the character of social sciences and humanities. In the third part, I mention the motivation to practice them. The fourth part deals with external conditions of practicing social sciences and humanities, and the fifth with their important tasks.

The topic of the article is the role of the mathematical education in the humanistic education (history, history of literature and art etc.). The author underlines the meaning understanding as the fundamental notion of the humanities. The lack of the understanding perspective leads the humanistic education to the superficial knowledge of facts and dates, always incomplete and not very useful for the grasping of the specific world of the human thinking and motivation. Mathematics, as the only pure formal subject in the Polish school educational program (there is no classes in logic in these schools), can provide the student at least with the three important abilities. Namely, mathematics education improves the imagination of the school-boys and girls (starting with the simple summing up and multiplication operations), deduction (as opposite to funding our convictions only on the opinions) and integrity of the knowledge (it is impossible to comprehend the more advanced mathematics theses with no knowledge of the other, more fundamental parts of it; much the same it is impossible e. g. to comprehend the essence of the historical processes without knowledge of the all important elements of them). However, what is needed in the school program in mathematics is some information about the more advanced mathematical theories and its applications to the other kinds of science (mathematics in cosmology, fractal theory, topology), These theories cannot be presented completely on this stage of education, yet can improve the imagination of the young men and help them to recognize the meaning of the mathematics for the understanding of the whole world, its structure and dynamism.

The article aims to describe the conceptualization of pandemic discourse taking place in humanistic reflection. The author analyzes the statements of Giorgio Agamben, Niall Ferguson, Ivan Krastev, Jean Luc Nancy, Slavoj Žižek, Piotr Augustyniak, Inga Iwasiów and Tomasz Stawiszyński. He describes the trends appearing in their texts regarding the assessment of the causes of the pandemic and forecasts its further consequences, and also briefly analyzes the ways of describing it. Finally, the author formulates conclusions about the humanities – pessimistic in terms of its diagnostic and prognostic capabilities – and poses questions about its current status and potential.

The paper discusses the activities involved in the process of creating a digital thematic repository focusing on historical cartographic and textual sources. On the basis of the thematic repository created as part of the project “Shaping the borders of Independent Poland in the light of cartographic documents”, the author presents proposals for solutions aimed at effective management of the various materials, as well as allowing users easy access to specific information. It provides an overview of the issues identified in the context of identifying, selecting, digitising and sharing digital copies of sources of relevance to humanities and social sciences research. With regard to the digitisation of cartographic sources, the article examines the challenges of adapting the technology to meet the diverse needs of information retrieval. In addition, it addresses issues related to the development of metadata and the integration of different types of sources. The article also addresses issues related to maintaining and updating the digital repository, with a particular focus on ensuring the sustainability of the project. The conclusions of the completed project allow us to identify best practices in the process of creating and managing a digital thematic repository, which can be a valuable tool for researchers, students, and cultural heritage institutions.

Autorka podejmuje namysł nad miejscem edukacji filmowej w szerszym kontekście teoretycznym, odwołując się do koncepcji pedagogiki sytuacjonistycznej Tadeusza Sławka oraz osadzając ją w ramach nowej humanistyki. Jako studium przypadku omawia i analizuje wybrane działania z 35-letniej historii Centralnego Gabinetu Edukacji Filmowej. Komentarze do pomysłów Gabinetu autorka odnosi do europejskich strategii edukacji filmowej: wypracowanych przez British Film Institute oraz funkcjonujących we Francji. W zakończeniu artykułu zostało sformułowanych pięć celów edukacji filmowej, które łączyłyby projekty z tego obszaru z kształceniem humanistycznym.
The author reflects on the place of film education in a broader theoretical context, applying the concept of situationist pedagogy proposed by Tadeusz Sławek and the framework of new humanities. As a case study, the author discusses and analyzes selected activities of Centralny Gabinet Edukacji Filmowej (Central Studio of Film Education), whose 35-year history has not yet been the object of an in-depth study. The author comments on the Studio’s ideas, relating them to some European strategies of film education, namely those established by the British Film Institute and those at work in France. In the conclusion, the author proposes five aims of film education that would link its programmes to humanities education.

This article foregrounds the collapse of the binary opposition between drama and theatre that in literary and theatre discourses are traditionally recognized as wholly separate art forms, with the former based on words and the latter based on live performances. The present author argues that by applying a performative perspective on art in its varied forms and introducing the category of the entanglement of matter and meaning, derived from quantum physics, a non-antagonistic approach to drama and theatre is still possible. The argument that sees literature as a performative art, adopted by the author, provides additional support. This article shows how changes in the very notion of the text as well as in the ontological status of literature itself have had their effect on the transformations of beliefs and conceptions grounded in the vision of the humanities understood as “the textual world” to produce the concept of “entangled world” instead. This being the case, the author proposes to depart from the concept of “text” (no matter how restructured or redefined), abandon thinking in categories of network structures (even Latour’s actor-network’s theory), and discard dialectical or holistic approaches (even the theory of cognitive blending – “cognitive amalgams”) in favour of emergent “entanglement acts”, anamorphic perspective in art reception and synaesthetic discourses. By studying experiences related to performativity in the arts and discourses related to performance studies, the article goes to show the changes currently going on in the humanities and transforming them into the perfomative humanities in the process.

In this article the author argues that engagement in scientific research and didactics on university level requires high ethical standards. Truth as a basic value implies a special quality of the scientific research and interpersonal attitudes. The author focuses on selected issues grouped into few sets of problems: 1) criteria of decision making in choosing topics for the investigations, 2) publication strategies, 3) promoting young scientists, 4) interpersonal relationships influencing quality of research – team problems, critique, cooperation, and competition, 5) respecting authorship of ideas and participation in the researches, 6) management of scientific institutions – priorities, challenges, and Machiavellian strategies, 7) making profits on scientific activity and applications, 8) marketing strategies promoting and disturbing scientific activity, 9) ideological biases and socio-political engagement of the scholars representing the humanities and social sciences. The main thesis of the article is that developing healthy interpersonal relationships contributes to one’s respect for the truth as a crucial value of scientific activity.

Rozwój nauk szczegółowych stanowi wyzwanie dla reprezentantów humanistyki, a konsekwencją jest dyskusja na temat statusu nauk humanistycznych, jaka toczy się w ostatnich dziesiątkach lat dziewiętnastego wieku i na przełomie dziewiętnastego i dwudziestego wieku. To, co nosi nazwę przełomu antypozytywistycznego zostało zainicjowane przez Wilhelma Diltheya, ale istotny wkład w dyskusję na temat statusu nauk humanistycznych mają również neokantyści. Artykuł stanowi próbę krótkiego ukazania stanowisk reprezentantów szkół badeńskiej i marburskiej w tej dyskusji. Jednocześnie analiza ujawnia różnice między ujęciem badeńczyków a marburczyków. Badeńczycy koncentrują się na odrębności nauk humanistycznych od nauk przyrodniczych, natomiast marburczycy chcą ukazać szczególną pozycję filozofii w systemie nauk. Wspólnym mianownikiem tych koncepcji jest jednak potrzeba pokazania wagi nauk humanistycznych w rozwoju cywilizacyjnym ludzkości, świadomość faktu, że rodząca się humanistyka stanowi problem dla nauk przyrodniczych.
The development of specialized sciences is a challenge for representatives of the humanities, and consequence is a discussion on the status of the humanities, which takes place in the last decades of the nineteenth century and at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. What is called N antipositivist turn, was initiated by Wilhelm Dilthey, but an important contribution into discussion on the status of the humanities is made by neo-Kantians. This article is an short attempt to present the position of representatives of Baden and Marburg school in this discussion. Badenians concentrates on the separetness of humanities from the natural sciences, ant the Marburgians wants to show a special position of philosophy in the science system. The common denominator of these concepts, however, is the need to show the importance of the humanities in the development of the civilization of mankind, aware of the fact that the nascent humanities is a problem for science.

The aim of this articole is to discover traces of humanitas in late antique and mediaval literature. Starting from the classic meaning of this notion, the paper finds three meaningful episodes: the controversy between Ambrosius and Symmachus about the Altar of Victory, the Dialogue of a Philosopher with a Jew and a Christian by Peter Abelard and the spread of the Life of Balaam and Josaphat. Through these examples, the article builds a new idea of humanitas, free from historical restricion, a blend of literary passion, acceptance of diversity and multiculturalism.

Comeniological research can be recognized as the one that belongs to the broadly understood humanities. Due to the factual diversity of Comenius' creative output, which is the subject of many scientific specialties, it can be included in transdisciplinary research. In this way, comeniology is capable of constructing many genetic sequences, thanks to which Comenius' legacy and heritage is not only of a historical nature; it truly belongs to the valuable components of contemporary humanistic culture. On the other hand, however, the affiliation of comeniology to the humanities also has a darker side; looking at it from the scientific and methodological point of view, generalizations within it are not nomothetic.

The article aims to look for a way to geographically delineate the notion of target culture in the language textbook “The World We Live in” by Ogasawara et al. (2013) published in Japan for Japanese students and teachers. Looking at the textbooks as cultural artefacts, we identified geographical space within the scope of the sample textbook and analysed the pedagogical context the place names appeared in. By doing that we attempt to find the spatial bias of the book, which is a manifestation of values there inscribed, often called the “hidden curriculum”. The elaborated method, following a seminal study by Risager (2018), is an attempt to adapt the proposed content analysis of the textbooks into GIS tools in order to capture the geographic dimension of the content. The method serves as a stepping stone towards the creation of a model to analyse and identify the attitudes toward the cultural content of educational materials. This will not only enable a more authentic classroom experience responding to the needs of particular groups of students and teachers but also look for ways to make the textbooks more inclusive.

The article presents a grim vision of the world in which teaching is no longer conducted. This serves as a basis for a critical evaluation of the abolishment of didactic process in favor of publications. The main idea is that the basis for the teaching process in the humanities is the only way in which humanities can develop understanding that will reach culture through the mediation of students which are the beneficiaries of humanistic ideals of teaching. There are also presented ideas concerning possible practices that counter negative tendencies. One of them is focused on creating publications about the humanistic didactic process that would include students not only as forces to gain knowledge withing the university but also as an active participants of culture that can develop themselves through the humanistic ideals. Special role of cultural studies in this process is also emphasized.

As a result of the transformations of the higher education system, there began a search for objective measures, making it possible to compare different higher education institutions (in terms of their academic staff, research outcomes documented in publications, professional careers of university graduates and the like). It prompted the academic circles to reflect on the actions undertaken by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, in particular those pertaining to the National Qualification Framework. Academic disciplines differ from one another in terms of their research methods, which is why all attempts at a parametrization, implementation of quantitative indices to evaluate representatives of the humanities, mathematical algorithms or taxonomy as means enabling a “fair” assessment of all academic teachers regardless of the discipline they represent, appear to be worthless.

The author of the article proves the existence of a strict connection between the broadly understood humanities and the areas of linguistic research that refer back to the cultural, communication, and in part also the structuralist paradigms. In order to substantiate his thesis, the author provides examples of such connections, with particular emphasis on the character and outcomes of research conducted by Krakow-based linguists.

Popular belief about contemporary visual culture says that it is a space of either disinformation or communication chaos. Many humanities scholars are very critical about so called pictorial turn in culture, although the use of this term in this context is actually inappropriate, as pictorial turn was originally used to name the birth of visual studies as a separate academic field. The paper studies some other common misunderstandings about using images in scholarly communication and teaching and also presents some basic ideas how those may be overcome. The article presents the graphic designer's point of view, which seems to be supplementary, but in fact is needful in rapidly changing humanities.

The article presents the legal concept of orphan works in the context of the Polish Law on Copyright and its social and cultural impact on the effectiveness of scientific research, especially in the field of humanities. The purpose of introducing legislative solutions relating to orphan works is to save the cultural heritage from oblivion, and also to restore the continuity of scientific research. The article also raises the question of the contemporary idea of Open Access, which is considered as another plane for new humanities — as a place of common ground to exchange knowledge without barriers.

The purpose of this paper is to ponder upon the future of the humanities from a metaphilosophical perspective inspired by G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophy of the history of philosophy. The need for this reflection follows from the crisis that the humanities are facing today due to global changes in higher education, caused by the domination of the capitalist economy and the dramatic development of technology. The author assumes that the essence of the humanities is determined by the formation of self-understanding (Bildung) and proposes to consider this issue from a broader historical point of view and apart from the institutional context of human sciences, namely in the light of the history of philosophy, understood according to the Hegelian approach as the development of selfknowledge. The paper extensively discusses Hegel’s philosophy of the history of philosophy, as well as subsequent metaphilosophical positions inspired by Hegel’s thought (especially that of August Cieszkowski and Martin Heidegger). As a result, the question about the future of the humanities is transformed into a postulate of reflection on the primacy of technoscientific thinking in the modern world. In line with the Hegelian view of knowledge development – attributing autoperformative function to self-cognition – this kind of reflection is a potential remedy for the crisis currently diagnosed in the humanities.
