Subsystentność, czyli cecha określająca zdolność do wszczepienia w inny byt albo przyjmowania do siebie innych bytów, w teologii rozpatrywana jest w odniesieniu do Boga i stworzeń, a zwłaszcza w refleksji nad osobami ludzkimi. Cechę tę ma przede wszystkim substancja Boga, w której usadowione są trzy Osoby. Odpowiednio też przymiot ten ma każda z trzech Osób, które są usadowione w jednej substancji. Ponadto każda z Nich jest usadowiona w dwóch pozostałych, a także przyjmuje je do siebie. Subsystentność Osoby Boskiej ma inny charakter w odniesieniu do substancji i w odniesieniu do pozostałych dwóch Osób. Bóg Stworzyciel ma zdolność przebywania w stworzeniach i zdolność przyjmowania ich do siebie. Analogicznie wszelkie byty stworzone mają zdolność przyjmowania Boga, ale tylko w sposób aspektowy (ślad Boga), i przebywania w Bogu. Szczególnie subsystentność jest cechą stworzeń personalnych (obraz Boży).
Subsistentiality, which is a feature determining the capability of being interiorised into another being, or of taking other beings into oneself, in theology is considered in relation to God and creatures, and in particular in the reflection over human beings. This feature is, first of all, to be found in the substance of God, which comprises three Persons. This feature is also characteristic of each and every of the three Persons who are located in one substance. Moreover, each of them is located in the remaining two and takes them to Himself. Subsistentiality of the Divine Person has a different character in relation to the substance and in relation to the remaining two Persons. God the Creator has the ability to remain in creatures and the ability to take them to Himself. Similarly, all created beings have the ability to take God but only in an aspect oriented way (the trace of God), and remain in God. In particular, subsistentiality is a feature of personal creatures (the image of God).

From the Thomistic point of view, the outline of philosophy of spiritual being takes into account three basic dimensions of the spirit. The first deals with the existence of independent personal beings, i.e. individual substances: God, angelic beings and human souls. The second is related to the fundamental phenomena of the inner life of a person, that is powers of the soul, their acts and objects. The last form of the spirit deals with personal external activity in the course of which all kinds of extra-mental beings are created. These include, above all, the multiple forms of the so-called spiritual culture, present nowadays mainly in science, art, morals and religion.

Artykuł przedstawia dzieło filozoficzno-literackie, które mimo charakteru kompilacji odegrało ważną rolę w historii kultury, gdyż pozwoliło przenieść istotne idee filozofii starożytnej do innej epoki, tj. średniowiecza. Jest to komentarz do księgi szóstej De re publica M.T. Cycerona, który odnajdujemy w Commentarii in Ciceronis Somnium Scipionis A.T. Makrobiusza. Utwór ten był przez długi czas jedynym świadectwem istnienia tekstu napisanego przez Cycerona. Był on również jednym z głównych źródeł, z których do średniowiecza dotarły idee platonizmu i pitagoreizmu oraz elementy starożytnych doktryn astronomicznych, muzykologicznych i matematycznych. Dzieło to było często komentowane przez średniowiecznych uczonych i zajmuje umysły wielu z nich. Liczne zagadnienia poruszane przez Makrobiusza wzbudzały zainteresowanie autorów znających jego Commentum. Podejmowali oni wątki Makrobiusza, rozwijali je i przekształcali według własnego sposobu myślenia. Komentarz Makrobiusza był w średniowieczu wielokrotnie przepisywany i komentowany, o czym świadczy liczba zachowanych rękopisów. W niniejszym artykule autor przedstawia wstępny zarys poglądów teologicznych, antropologicznych i psychologicznych, w połączeniu z komentarzem na temat przekazu w okresie średniowiecza.
The article presents a philosophical and literary work which, despite its compiler character, played an important role in the history of culture. Thanks to him, important ideas of ancient philosophy were transferred to another era, that is, the Middle Ages. This work is a commentary on the VI book of De re publica by M.T. Cicero of A.T. Macrobius: Commentarii in Ciceronis Somnium Scipionis. This piece was for a long time the only trace of the mentioned piece by Cicero. It was also one of the main sources by which the ideas of Platonism and Pythagoreism as well as elements of ancient astronomical, musicological and mathematical doctrines reached the Middle Ages. This work was commented on very often by medieval scholars and is present in the minds of many of them. The numerous issues raised by Macrobius met with the interest of authors who know his Commentum. They took up macrobian threads and developed and transformed them according to their own way of thinking. Macrobius’ comment was repeatedly rewritten and commented on in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the number of preserved manuscripts. In this article, I want to present an initial outline of the theological, anthropological and psychological views mediated by the commentary on the transmission of the Middle Ages.

The Medieval imagery in the representations of the Genesis are profusely analysed in the literature of the subject. This is owing to the fact that the images in question cumulate a large number of interrelated religious motifs and ideas. The paramount motif is that of the Creator, whose presence was usually represented graphically by the figure of Christ with the crossnimbus. Other figures were also used as substitutes of God the Father. Figures of angels taking part in the consequent stages of creation are a frequent iconographic element, too. Irrespective of the above, the bodies and the carnality of Adam and Eve has been discussed only marginally, or completely ignored in the research on the Medieval imagery of the Genesis. Despite the common belief that Medieval art had no intense interest in the human body, the scenes depicting the creation of the human being reveal the artists' attempts to take up the theological discourse on the nature of carnality, bearing “God's image.” This paper points at a selection of patristic texts and those written by other authors who interpreted carnality in the context of the mystery of the human soul, intellect, human senses as well as the conditions relating to the sexual divide. The analysis is based on the most outstanding Medieval miniatures and reliefs that represent the relationship between the human being and the Creator in the moment of creating, first, Adam and then Eve. Special emphasis is placed on the artists' efforts to carefully represent the gestures of the Creator, which are to tell the spectator about the dignity of the human body as created by God. Also discussed are images that pinpoint the difference in the artistic positioning of the representation of God in relation to Adam and Eve. Some of the images show closeness and affinity, when God leans down towards the world in the act of creating man. In others, God sits on a globe, creating man by means of a divine gesture, but staying in a distance to His creation. A vital element in the way in which the first parents' bodies were painted was how a given artist emphasised or understated the anatomical features of Adam and Eve. Some artists even presented them as children, in an apparent need to give their own interpretation of their age. Yet another significant aspect in the analysis of how the human body was depicted is that of surroundings. The representations of the garden of Eden present nature, with special exposition of the ground on which the newly-created Adam is lying, a rock as well the trees and rivers in paradise.

To the question “What are we?”, the common-sense answer is “human beings”; but many philosophers prefer to say we are “persons”. This paper argues that the philosophical use of “person” (to mean, roughly, a conscious, rational agent) is problematic. It takes us away from the sound Aristotelian idea that our biological nature is essential to what we are, and towards the suspect Lockean idea that a person could migrate from one body to another. This dualistic Lockean conception is often laid at Descartes’s door, but Descartes himself in many passages underlines our status as human beings. There is a further danger in the idea of personhood as rational agency if (following Kant) it is seen as that which makes someone worthy of moral respect. Respect should be recognized as an inalienable and absolute human entitlement, independent of our circumstances, capacities, group-membership, qualifications or faculties.

This text aims to show that the core of human divinity according to Aristotle is exercising the divine mind for its own sake. Being happy and thus divine is auto-teleological, and must not be reduced to any sort of instrumental value. This reading of Aristotle excludes the theist interpretations of Prime Mover as well as the attempts at identifying the human mind with God, mainly because both these (different) interpretations seem to make auto-teleological bios theoretikos impossible. The first do this by introducing the divine provision which makes people act for God’s sake and not for their own sake. The others reduce the special status of humans by taking away the divine part, in my opinion being the sine qua non condition of the concept of human divinity. All the interpretations of human divinity which I have presented above can be useful nowadays in the ethical, (bio)ethical, social or even political discourse. This shows that the history of philosophy is not only about the past, but also about the future.

The aim of this article is to present the position of Islamic ethics and bioethics on the issue of the value of life. To better illustrate this topic the article is divided into two parts. In the first, the authors provide an overview of ethics, and relate it Islamic bioethics, including its sources and inspirations, while in the second, the authors examine the value of life as depicted from the perspective of Quranic ethics and Islamic bioethics of both the Shi’a and the Sunnis. Although the text has a propedeutic character it is important because it adds another theologico-philosophical layer to the complex bioethical discussion that lies at the heart of the current dispute about the value of human life.

Abstract: The human body and its theoretical possibilities of change or transformation have not yet been discussed in publications. Assuming that the source of information about a person can both be their remains and iconography, this article attempts to approach this issue based on two sources: a graphical representation of the object that could be used to transform the human body - i.e. a wand and the narrative scene representing the transformation. On the vessel from Smuszewo, Wągrowiec district, there is the figure of a man holding a wand in his right hand. He is surrounded by many small holes - it is highly probable that they are a graphical representation of the human transformation when touching the wand (Fig. 1B). For the Nadziejewo vessel, Środa Wielkopolska district, Greater Poland Voivodeship, another interpretation is proposed other than the published one (Mikłaszewska-Balcer 1973, Fig. 1). This interpretation assumes that the first person is the man responsible for the ritual of body change, and on right the ritual wand is depicted. Other figures visible on the left side of the picture show the transformation of the body - at the beginning the change is in the legs (from none to three), and at the end the evident transformation of the entire body. What is the most important is that the last of the three figures are connected by a line of holes which emphasis the most important stage of transformation, i.e. obtaining a new state (Fig. 1A). The scene was explained as a graphical presentation of the transition of the human body to the world of the sacrum. This is further evidence and support for including the Lusatian Culture into the orbit of a pan-European system of a mythological axial era. One of the characteristics of this sphere was a focus on the world of values, which were needed to protect against negative external factors, and was realised inter alia through magical acts.

This article proposes the thesis that Edith Stein’s late anthropology has a theocentric orientation. The threefold structure of a human being consisting of a body, soul and spirit is examined in order to validate the thesis. First of all, the finitude of a human being points out to the eternal being and – consequently – human beings are not conceivable by themselves, without the context of God. Moreover, the hylomorphic union of the body and soul adopted from Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy is enriched in Stein’s anthropology by the concept of spirit. This results in a threefold structure and is reason enough to suggest man’s iconic similarity to the Trinity. Furthermore, Stein takes over St. Teresa of Avila’s concept of an internal center of the soul, which can be a meeting point between a person and God. The analysis of the soul’s center supports the main thesis.

Since most pressing today on a global scale is to be able to unite religion, philosophy, and science into parts of a coherent civilizational whole, and since the ability to unite a multitude into parts of a coherent whole essentially requires understanding the natures of the things and the way they can or cannot be essentially related, this paper chiefly considers precisely why the modern world has been unable to effect this union. In so doing, it argues that the chief cause of this inability to unite these cultural natures has been because the contemporary world, and the West especially, has lost its understanding of philosophy and science and has intentionally divorced from essential connection to wisdom. Finally, it proposes a common sense way properly to understand these natures, reunite them to wisdom, and revive Western and global civilization.

Under Hylemorphism, all composed beings are composed of form and matter. Accordingly, the human being is a unified substance of soul and body. Through the operations of a human being an immaterial power is manifested which demonstrates that the rational soul is immaterial and immortal. Through these elements of Thomistic metaphysics, a clear understanding of the person emerges as both in-itself and toward-others. After key metaphysical principles such as the principle of sufficient reason are defended, arguments against the thesis which claim the person is reducible to body or soul are rebuked and the Hylemorphic account is shown to stand. Leaning on the work of W. Norris Clarke, the person as body and soul is thus shown to be the frontier of being.

This article argues that, strictly speaking, from its inception with the ancient Greeks and for all time, philosophy and science are identical and consist in an essential relationship between a specific type of understanding of the human person as possessed of an intellectual soul capable of being habituated and a psychologically-independent composite whole, or organization. It maintains, further, that absence of either one of the extremes of this essential relationship cannot be philosophy/science and, if mistaken for such and applied to the workings of cultural institutions, will generate anarchy within human culture and make leadership excellence impossible to achieve. Finally, it argues that only a return to this “common sense” understanding of philosophy can generate the leadership excellence that can save the West from its current state of cultural and civilizational anarchy.

One of the most important problems of Polish Catholic community of faith at the present time is the idea of the enthronement of Christ the King of Poland – very well known, and yet controversial. This pastoral and spiritual movement, for the first time in the history of the Catholic Church in Poland, seems to divide seriously the Polish Catholic community into two parts: those who are almost fanatical followers of this idea claiming that only the enthronement of Christ the King will save the modern world from darkness, and on the other hand a serious opposition towards this group, that is the environment treating the very enthronement as a serious element of darkness within the Catholic family in Poland. Perhaps, an analysis and practical pastoral application of the idea of leading Christ onto man’s spiritual peak which was presented by blessed John Henry Newman in his writings will be a sort of rescue in this dispute.
Jednym z ważniejszych problemów wspólnoty katolickiej w Polsce jest bardzo popularna w tym czasie i w pewnym sensie kontrowersyjna idea Intronizacji Chrystusa na Króla Polski. Ten ruch duchowy i duszpasterski, pierwszy raz w ciągu długiej historii Kościoła katolickiego nad Wisłą, wydaje się poważnie dzielić polskich katolików jakby na dwa stronnictwa: tych, którzy niekiedy wydają się być prawie fanatykami powyższej idei, sądzącymi, że jedynie Intronizacja Chrystusa może wybawić nowożytność z jej ciemności; oraz mocna opozycja wobec tego typu myślenia, która właśnie pomysł Intronizacji traktuje jako poważną ciemność teologiczną wewnątrz katolickiej rodziny w Polsce. Być może do rozwiązania tej trudnej dysputy teologicznej przyczyni się analiza i praktyczne, duszpasterskie zastosowanie poprzednio istniejącej już idei intronizacji Chrystusa na szczyt duszy ludzkiej, która przedstawiona została w duchowych pismach błogosławionego Johna Henry‘ego Newmana.

The dispute over delayed animation, although it has its beginnings already in ancient philosophy and culture, started for good only in contemporary times when the right to kill unborn children (so-called abortion) entered the canon of constitutional law and, what is even stranger, started to be proposed for inclusion into basic human rights. Despite being discussed nowadays mainly in medical and legal sciences, the problem involves disputes of an ethical, religious and ideological nature. In these discussions one can notice a clear lack of anthropological and metaphysical argumentation that would address the question about the beginning of the human being (which entails the question about the beginning of being per se) in the light of common properties that belong to really existing beings, and the metaphysical laws that govern the manner in which things (including human embryos) exist. This article discusses understandings of the human being as they are found in Plato’s, Aristotle’s and Thomas Aquinas’s philosophical anthropology. It is this triad of approaches: Platonic, Aristotelian and Thomistic, that allows one both to notice the specificity of Aquinas’s approach and to resolve the dispute concerning delayed animation.

This paper maintains that Swinburne’s argument that the body is not essential to who I am is vulnerable to a similar objection to that put forward by Arnauld against Descartes: how do I know that my self-identification furnishes a complete and adequate account of the essential “me,” sufficient to show I could really continue to exist even were the body to be destroyed? The paper goes on to criticize Swinburne’s “hyper-Cartesian” position, that we are simply “souls who control bodies,” and thus only contingently human. This denial of our essential humanity compares unfavorably with Descartes’s own more intuitively attractive view that the human being is a genuine entity in its own right.
