Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza pojęcia nieśmiertelności, wpisanie go w kontekst debaty bioetycznej poświęconej pojęciu udoskonalania człowieka i przedstawienie problemów wiążących się z tymi zagadnieniami. W tekście podejmuję próbę krótkiego omówienia kwestii udoskonalania człowieka w nawiązaniu do postępu technologicznego i zarysowanego przez Harrisa programu ewolucji udoskonalającej. Następnie staram się pokazać czym dla Harrisa jest nieśmiertelność, jakie jej typy wyróżnia, dlaczego warto się nią zajmować i w jaki sposób. Wreszcie przedstawiam główne zarzuty kierowane pod adresem nieśmiertelności i to, jak Harris się im przeciwstawia. Celem pobocznym, czy raczej postulatem, jest próba zaproponowania kierunku dalszych badań zarówno nad zagadnieniem nieśmiertelności jak i w dziedzinie udoskonalania człowieka.
The main goal of this article is to analyze the notion of immortality, to place it in the context of bioethical debate over the concept of human enhancement and to present problems related to these issues. In the text, I attempt to briefly discuss the question of human enhancement in reference to the technological progress and Harris's program of enhancing evolution. Afterwards I try to show what for Harris immortality is, what types of it he distinguishes, why is it worth dealing with and how. Finally, I present the main allegations against immortality and the way Harris opposes them. A side goal, or rather a postulate, is my attempt to propose a direction for further research both on the issue of immortality and in the field of human enhancement.

In this paper I undertake to analyze the way in which the arrival of HETs may influence the therapeutic relationship between the medical doctor and the patient. I begin with presenting he notion of transhumanism, insisting especially on the fact that some of the technologies that can be classified as HETs are already in use. As a result, the traditionally difficult task of defining health and a disease is becoming even more complicated. This circumstance poses the risk that medical doctors in their relationship with the patient, because of the possibilities offered by new technologies, will oscillate in their professional practice between helping the patient to recover and satisfying needs that are not justified by the considerations of health. I will try to show how the therapeutic relationship between the medical doctor and the patient may be transformed because of new technologies by using the example of IVF procedure applied to postmenopausal patients. In order to understand why the relationship between the medical doctors and their patients is so vulnerable in the context of transhumanism, I propose to re-analyze the most basic notions which help us understand the nature of the therapeutic relationship: the status of medicine as contrasted with technology, basic principles of medical ethics, the notion of a disease and an illness.

In this article I discuss one of the most significant areas of bioethical interest, which is the problem of moral enhancement. Since I claim that the crucial issue in the current debate on human bioenhancement is the problem of agency, I bring out and examine the conditions of possibility of selfunderstanding, acting subjects attributing responsible authorship for their actions to themselves. I shall argue that the very idea of moral enhancement, properly understood, fails to justify the claims that enhancing the “biological” factor that plays a part in the process of making moral choices, whether through biomedical or genetic interventions, will actually increase the probability of having “morally better future motives”.

The papers are written by a dozen or so well-known experts on transhumanism, who come from renowned academic institutions and various research centers. The publication is not only interesting and inspiring, but also forces one to reflect on the nature of man, his essence and the impact of technology on his life, as well as the ethical evaluation of this impact.

Human enhancement affects all members of society and is thus closely linked to issues of social justice: up to now, the promises and perils of enhancement are usually only known to, and thus used, by few members of society. This can lead to individual competitive advantages that create or widen social gaps. Broad public information is, therefore, key to ensure that enhancement does not conflict with the principle of equality of opportunities. As possible means of public information, literature and films are able to counter such possible social injustice, which is why they may be allotted a central role in the ethical debates on human enhancement. Two aspects will be considered in this regard: 1) enhancement in art and 2) through art. 1) The extent to which artistic depictions and public information and perceptions of enhancement may be intertwined will be illustrated by two examples where both texts and their accompanying paratexts had a particular bearing on the public debate on enhancement: the film Gattaca of 1997 and the novel Never let me go (2005) by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro. 2) The second part of the paper is dedicated to the question of how far enhancing selected groups of society may contribute to a greater common good and which potentials art can offer in this regard. Three groups of persons will be taken into account: 1) clinical ethics committees, 2) physicians, and 3) patients.

Vylepšovanie človeka je skutočnosťou, ktorej sa nevyhneme. Niekedy ho možno vnímať doslova ako spoločenský imperatív. Technologické zásahy, ktorým pri vylepšovaní čelí človek, však neraz vzbudzujú oprávnené obavy a otvárajú otázky, ktoré sme si doteraz nekládli. Ide nielen o výzvy antropologické, ale zásadným spôsobom aj etické. Preto je legitímna a potrebná snaha stanoviť etickú hranicu medzi dovolenými a nedovolenými zásahmi vylepšovania človeka. Tento článok si kladie otázku a zároveň dáva na ňu odpoveď, či je možné stanoviť jasnú hranicu, ktorá by bola použiteľná pre celú oblasť vylepšovania človeka.
Human enhancement is a reality that cannot be avoided. Sometimes it can be seen literally as a social imperative. However, the technological interventions that humans face in enhancement often raise legitimate concerns and questions that we have not yet asked. These challenges are not only anthropological, but also fundamentally ethical. It is therefore legitimate and necessary to attempt to draw an ethical line between permissible and impermissible human enhancement interventions. This article asks and answers the question of whether it is possible to draw a clear boundary that is applicable to the entire field of human enhancement.

Edukacja jest ciągłym procesem przygotowywania młodych ludzi do wejścia w dorosłość, podczas którego wyposaża się ich w niezbędne narzędzia i wiedzę, aby mogli poradzić sobie w przyszłości zarówno na rynku pracy, jak i w życiu osobistym oraz w funkcjonowaniu w społeczeństwie. Jest to również na swój sposób proces „udoskonalania człowieka”. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przybliżenie modnych dzisiaj i szeroko komentowanych koncepcji filozoficznych transhumanizmu i posthumanizmu. Najpierw zostanie zatem przedstawionych kilka najbardziej znanych i popularnych wizji dotyczących przyszłości, które zostały zaprezentowane przez wizjonerów przełomu XIX i XX wieku, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tych, które na swój sposób się już spełniły. W dalszej części artykułu zostaną ukazane koncepcje filozofii transhumanizmu i posthumanizmu, wraz z przedstawieniem najważniejszych różnic. W ostatniej części wskazane zostaną wyzwania edukacyjne postulowane przez aktywistów tych ruchów filozoficznych, a na koniec – główne problemy etyczne, jakie rodzą się w świecie futurystycznych wizjonerów.
Education is a continuous process of preparing young people to enter adulthood, of equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to cope in the future so that they can cope both in the labor market and in their personal life as well as in functioning in society. It is also, in its own way, a process of “human enhancement.” This article aims to introduce the fashionable and widely commented philosophical concepts of transhumanism and posthumanism. First, some of the most famous and popular visions of the future from visionaries at the end of the 19th century are presented, with a particular emphasis on those that have in some way come true. In the next part of the article, the very concepts of transhumanism and posthumanism are clarified, along with a presentation of the most important differences. In the last part, the educational challenges posed by proponents of these philosophical movements are indicated, as well as the main ethical problems that arise in the world of futuristic visionaries.

The author proposes a set of possible objections and amendments to the notion of transhumanism that can be made from the standpoint of environmental ethics. The transhumanist movement, as it is developed by such researchers as Nick Bostrom, Ingmar Persson, Julian or Savulescu, is devoted to identifying the best ways and measures of utilizing the scientific knowledge of human biology in order to allow people overcoming the limits of their current biological condition. However, such project raises several moral, ethical, political, and economical issues. It is worthwhile – in the author’s opinion – to broaden the discussion over transhumanism by including environmental issues, raised by such thinkers as Aldo Leopold or Paul W. Taylor. The author argues for a radical concept of enhancement – in opposition to Nicholas Agar’s “moderate enhancement”. The author believes that by introducing the Taylorian concept of “respect for nature”, it is possible to ameliorate the transhumanist program by – on one hand – identifying its possible shortcomings, but also by ensuring the care or the best possible ecological conditions for future generations.

Opis:
Przedmiotem rozważań są wartości transhumanistyczne sformułowane przez Nicka Bostroma, których realizacja ma uzasadniać dynamiczny proces technicyzacji środowiska życia człowieka i jego biologicznej konstytucji. Powrót do nienowej propozycji Bostroma i jej kolejna krytyczna analiza pozwalają poznać głębiej cele ideologii transhumanizmu, która zaczyna zastępować tradycyjną humanistykę. Wynik analizy wskazuje na konieczność powrotu do tradycyjnego systemu wartości etycznych i zachowania w ewoluującym transczłowieku osoby ludzkiej. W artykule przybliża się także stan i możliwości nowych zintegrowanych technologii GRIN, których wprowadzanie, w dużej mierze sterowane prawami komercji, zagraża utratą kontroli człowieka nad jego własnym wytworem.
The object of consideration is transhumanist values, formulated by Nick Bostrom, the realization of which is supposed to justify the dynamic process of technicization of the human living environment and its biological constitution. The return to Bostrom’s non-new proposal and its subsequent critical analysis allow us to learn more deeply about the goals of the ideology of transhumanism, which is beginning to replace the traditional humanities. The result of the analysis indicates the necessity of returning to the traditional system of ethical values and preserving in the evolving transhuman the human person. The article also takes a closer look at the state and possibilities of the new integrated GRIN technologies, whose introduction, largely guided by the laws of commerce, threatens the loss of man’s control over his own creation.

Opis:
This article is about the philosopher as a potential therapist. It starts from tendencies exhibited by a group of contemporary philosophers involved in a so-called human enhancement. Drawing on the newest discoveries of genetics, genetic engineering and pharmacology, they offer a set of therapies aimed at the extensive ‘improvement’ of the human condition. In the second part of the paper, selected ideas concerning philosophical therapy by the Ancient philosophers are presented. They basically employed personal contact, conversation, and wise counselling. Then these two approaches to this kind of therapy are compared and contrasted. The contemporary approaches offer novel, technical ways of intervention but are blind as far as farreaching goals and the essential goods of human life are concerned. Despite serious cultural differences, the contemporary therapy can learn a lot from the ancients. If the human being is to be treated by philosophers, an integral picture of who the former is must be taken into account. This means that both his interiority and exteriority should be subjects to the therapy.
Artykuł dotyczy filozofa, który może pełnić funkcję terapeuty. W pierwszej części ukazane są tendencje do postaw terapeutycznych dostrzegane w środowisku filozofów współczesnych zaangażowanych w tzw. ulepszanie człowieka. Wykorzystując najnowsze osiągnięcia genetyki, inżynierii genetycznej i farmakologii, filozofowie ci oferują terapie ukierunkowane na „ulepszenie” ludzkiej kondycji. W drugiej części artykułu ukazane są wybrane idee dotyczące terapii filozoficznej w postaci, jaką praktykowali niektórzy filozofowie starożytni. Ich propozycje opierały się zasadniczo na kontakcie osobowym, rozmowie i radach o charakterze mądrościowym. W kolejnej części artykułu te dwa podejścia są skontrastowane i porównane. Stanowiska współczesne podkreślają wagę nowych, technicznych metod ingerencji w życie człowieka, ale są ślepe, jeśli chodzi o ujęcie istotnych celów i dóbr ludzkich. Pomimo wielu poważnych różnic kulturowych współczesna terapia może się wiele nauczyć od tej rozwijanej w starożytności. Jeśli istota ludzka ma być poddana terapii praktykowanej przez filozofa, konieczne jest wzięcie pod uwagę jej integralnego obrazu. Oznacza to, że tak jej wnętrze, również jej zewnętrzność powinny stać się przedmiotem ewentualnego oddziaływania terapeutycznego.
