Opis:
The aim of the research was to determine the changes in the concentrations of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) in sheep during lactation. The experiment was conducted on 20 Polish Longwool ewes. Milking was begun after the lambs were weaned, on the 57th day of lactation. Sheep were milked twice a day (8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.) until dry. The milk yield of each ewe was checked every 10 days. For determination of thyroid hormones, blood was collected every 28 days beginning at sunset, every 20 minutes for 6 hours. The average milk yield of the sheep was determined based on the individual yields on test days. The highest (P ≤ 0,01) milk yield was obtained in the first month of milking, i.e. April (0,48 ± 0,018 l). Milk yield decreased as lactation progressed. The concentration of hormone T3 was significantly higher (P ≤ 0,01) in the first and third months of lactation (0,72 ± 0,02 ng/ml in April and 0,74 ± 0,02 ng/ml in June) than in September (0,55 ± 0,01 ng/ml). The T3 concentration decreased in successive months of lactation. In contrast, the concentration of the T4 hormone increased with the progression of lactation. Significantly (P ≤ 0,01) the lowest concentration of T4 was found in the first and second month of milking (51,7 ± 9,8 ng/ml, 48,8 ± 7,4 ng/ml). The highest T4 concentration in lactating sheep was noted in August (60,55 ± 10 ng/ml). The research showed that the secretion of T3 decreases with milk yield, while secretion of T4 shows an upward trend as lactation progresses. Therefore thyroid hormones modulate secretion of milk in sheep.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of 2 weeks of creatine hydrochloride (CrHCl) supplementation on physical performance and hormonal changes in army soldiers. Materials: Eighteen male army soldiers were randomly assigned in a double-blind fashion to either a CrHCl (n=9) or placebo (Pl) (n=9) groups. CrHCl group costumed 3g of creatine per day, whereas Pl group was given dextrose. Before and after supplementation period, the subjects performed a battery of performance tests including one repletion maximum (1RM) of bench press and back squat, vertical jump (VJ) and Wingate anaerobic test. In addition, blood samples were obtained to determine changes in testosterone and cortisol concentrations per and post supplementation. Results: There were significant increases in VJ, peak and mean power, and 1RM back squat test following the 2 weeks of CrHCl supplementation (p < 0.05) without any significant change for the Pl group. In addition significant changes were observed in testosterone and cortisol concentrations from before to after supplementation in CrHCl group (p < 0.05) and compared with Pl group (p=0.001). Conclusions: In conclusion, the present study indicates that CrHCl supplementation can improve VJ, power performance, 1RM back squat and hormonal changes in army soldiers.

Opis:
Background. Paragliding is an extreme sport performed by gliding from a mountain at high altitude into the air. The authors aimed to determine the differences between the levels of adrenaline, cortisol, and insulin before and after the flight of tandem pilots and passengers flying for the first time, and to determine the relationship between these hormones and death anxiety and risk-taking levels. Materials and methods. The study included 12 experienced male pilots and 15 male passengers flying for the first time. Heart rate and blood pressure were measured after the participants had filled in Personal Information Form, DOSPERT Risk-Taking Scale and Death Anxiety Scale before the flight. Blood samples were taken before and after the flight to determine adrenaline, cortisol, and insulin levels. Results. Adrenaline and cortisol levels, as well as heart rate, increased significantly after the flight, while insulin levels decreased significantly in the passenger group (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the pilot group. Conclusions. The experience factor plays an important role in the positive effect of paragliding flight on cortisol, adrenaline, insulin, and various physiological parameters, as well as mediates the adaptation of the organism to unusual situations. The human organism adapts physiologically and hormonally to the flying action. One of the striking results of the study was that cortisol levels were at the upper limit of normal values in the passenger group after the flight.

Opis:
A short historical outlook of steroid hormones isolation, structure elucidation and hormonal drugs development following by a survey of contraceptive therapeutics syntheses and advancements is given. Structural evolution of the first pills, “the pill”, to the presently used oral contraceptives for women is scrutinized. Comments on activities of selected major researchers in the field: Josef Fried, Russell E. Marker, Arthur J. Birch, Carl Djerassi, Georgy G. Pincus, M. C. Chang, John Rock, Igor V. Torgov, Zoltan G. Hajos and Herchel Smith from the personal prospect are presented. Steroid sex hormones, estrogens (female), androgens (male) and gestagens (progesterone, pregnancy hormone) were isolated and identified as chemical entities in 20-tiest and 30-ties of the 20th century. Development of partial synthesis of basic hormones from cholesterol made possible the initial steroid drugs production: Testosterone propionate and 17a-Methyltestosterone (Ciba) as well as Proviron, Progynon, Proluton (Schering AG). In 1940th and 1950th corticosteroids were isolated and recognized as “magic” anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic drugs. Growing demand for antiarthritic drugs in 1950th stimulated search for new corticosteroid analogues and new steroid row materials. Exploration of Mexican plant Dioscorea “cabeza” by Synthex SA provided economical starting material, diosgenin, and opened the new prospects for hormonal drug research and the production. Subsequently, highly active corticosteroid analogues were developed by several pharmaceutical companies and 19-norprogesterone analogues of high gestagenic activity were synthesized - Norethisterone (Synthex) and Norethyndrel (Searle). Complex studies on the application of Norethyndrel as oral contraceptive for women were carried out in the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology. In 1959 the first drug “the pill”, which was developed on the grounds of Searls’ Norethyndrel - Enovid was registered by Food and Drug Administration in the USA. Shortly after that Norlutin, based upon Synthex’s Norethisterone, had also been approved for application. Commercial success of “the pill”, Enovid and Norlutin, triggered a broad research aimed at the partial synthesis and application of related progesterone analogues. In the end of 1950th and the beginning of 1960th the total synthesis of estrogens and 19-norsteroids gained practical importance. On these grounds Norgestrel and its active enancjomer Levonorgestrel were developed and commercialized by Wyeth Laboratories Inc. in the USA as the first contraceptive products by total synthesis. Starting from 1970th medicinal applications of corticosteroids gradually diminished, whereas growing attention was given to the development of hormonal contraceptives suitable for general application. Several synthetic modifications of Norethisterone and Levonorgestrel were developed and produced in a large scale. Another class of oral contraceptives stem from the steroid total synthesis developed in the Russell Uclaf laboratories. Structurally these compounds are characterized by 19-norsteroid core and the presence of bulky substituent at the position 11ß, as 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl- in Mifepristone (RU 486). The synthesis of 19-norpregnane derivatives bearing at the position 11ß various large aromatic or alphatic groups, which currently is receiving a great deal of attention, is considered.

Opis:
Background. Recently, an increasing number of scientific studies have reported on the adverse effects of sweeteners on the body. The aim of this work was to study the effect of sucralose on the production of thyroid hormones. Material and methods. The study involved 30 women (average age 24.5±5.2 years) who considered themselves to be healthy. Blood levels of free and total triiodothyronine, free and total thyroxine, as well as thyroid-stimulating hormone were determined. The women were then prescribed sucralose for a month, taken daily at a dose of 15 mg/kg. At the end of this period, levels of thyroid hormones were measured again. Results. After the sucralose regimen, free and total triiodothyronine and total thyroxine were found to be 2.0, 1.58 and 1.46 times lower, respectively, than before sucralose intake (P<0.001). Conclusions. Given that sucralose affects the production of thyroid hormones, it can be concluded that sucralose is not a biologically inert compound.
Wprowadzenie. W ostatnim czasie coraz więcej badań naukowych porusza kwestię szkodliwego wpływu słodzików na organizm. Celem niniejszej pracy było przebadanie związku sukralozy z produkcją hormonów tarczycowych. Materiał i metody.

Opis:
Hormones are a heterogeneous, significant compounds, responsible for proper functioning of living organisms, produced by specialized cells, tissues and glands. Theirs main role is signals transmission to target tissues, responsible for the right working of the whole organism. Dysfunctions of the hormones homeostasis balance lead to disease states [1-3]. Recently, scientists have paid attention to role of the metal ions in the proper synthesis of these compounds and functioning of human body [4]. More and more scientific works explain the complicated roles of metals as beneficial factors that stimulate the conformation of peptides. Metal ions are responsible for biological properties and influence of hormones binding to appropriate receptors, but also adverse factors [4,5]. The search for an answer to the question about the metal - hormone relationship has led to the development of a new, interdisciplinary studies: metalloendocrinology, linking inorganic chemistry with endocrinology [4]. In this work, we present the literature data that relate to metal - peptide hormone interactions. We focused on cyclic hormones with a disulfide bridge and their analogues. In our review we have focused on selected natural cyclic peptide hormones: oxytocin, vasopressin, somatostatin, hepcidin and amylin. The studies on the coordination abilities showed that transition metal ions, such as copper(II), zinc(II) or nickel(II), form stable complexes with described peptides. Metal ions actively participate in many phenomena. They have played role in the formation of amylin aggregates in patients with type 2 diabetes [6]. The high ability to copper(II) by hepcidin may have an effect on its homeostasis [7]. Stable complexes of oxytocin and vasopressin facilitate binding with appropriate receptors for these peptides [8].

Opis:
Background. The intent of our study was to seek possible relationships between selected personality traits and the current hormonal status in blood (cortisol and testosterone) among young male and female archers of similar average age (~16.4 years) and their sport achievements (SA) in a future. Material and methods. Morning blood cortisol (C) and testosterone (T) levels and selected personality traits were determined in19 male and 19 female archers. 16 years after the study the data were analyzed with regards to the (SA) expressed by numerical rating and achieved until the end of their career. Results. There were no significant differences between the males and females in scores of examined: trait anxiety (An), neuroticism (Ne), extraversion (Ex), briskness (Br), perseveration (Pe), sensory sensitivity (SS), emotional reactivity (ER), endurance (En), activity (Ac) and C. In females An, Ne and ER correlated positively SA. In males SA was independent on any personality trait, while T correlated negatively with An and Ne and positively with briskness. Conclusions. In young archers there is no significant sex-related differences in personality traits, but this thesis is of limited value because of small sample size. Assuming that in young athletes the personality is not very stable, there are recommended short-term prognosis regarding sport achievements.
Wstęp. Celem naszego badania było poszukiwanie możliwych relacji między wybranymi cechami osobowości a obecnym stanem hormonalnym we krwi (kortyzol i testosteron) wśród młodych łuczników i łuczniczek płci w podobnym średnim wieku (~ 16,4 lat) i ich osiągnięciach sportowych (SA) w przyszłości. Materiał i metody. Wyniki.

Looking for research methods in the comparative spheres of female psychological complexity and complex architectural structure is aimed at optimizing the design processes and expected to result in a space that is shaped to satisfy requirements, comfortable, safe, up– to–date, iconic and at the same time emanates unquestionable beauty. Verification of similarities is made on two levels: evaluation of form and evaluation of function, with taking hormonal factors into account. In this context, subjectification of architecture to the woman’s role allows one to make use, to the widest possible extent, of emotions and senses being an endless source of emerging sensations that often phenomenologically build our experience. Characterological richness of both, supported with construction craftsmanship, reliability of execution, technology, but more importantly by knowledge, imagination and awareness of an architect, points to the possibility of occurrence of cognitive control elements, which implies increased impact on the quality of the reality shaped around us.

Opis:
Currently, a significant problem of water and sewage management is the presence of human hormones, especially estrogens and progestagens, consumed by women in contraceptives and then excreted from the body. While other drugs are used by a small part of the population and rather sporadically, hormonal contraception is used by a large number of women, which contributes to their high concentration in sewage. Even relatively low estrogen concentrations (compared to other drugs) can have harmful effects on the body, disturbing the hormonal balance and leading to various endocrine disorders. In this paper the types of individual estrogen groups were characterized. Next, different methods of their removal from wastewater were presented. The parameters of estrogen removal efficiency depend on which parameters. Next, the effectiveness of each method was compared, also taking into account economic aspects. The work was summarized with appropriate conclusions.

Opis:
Annona muricata is a recognized medicinal plant species. Despite its usefulness, adequate attention has not been given to its propagation and cultivation. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of some rooting hormones on juvenile stem cuttings of Annona muricata. Uniform, healthy, single node leafy stem cuttings were obtained from eighty (80) uniformly growing seedlings. The cuttings were treated with 1mg/ml of Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), 1 mg/ml of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA), coconut water and distilled water as control, using the quick dip method. The percentage survival of the cuttings, percentage of die back, number of new roots formed per cutting, length of new roots formed, and number of new shoot were assessed after 60 days. Results obtained revealed that the species responded differently to the four treatments. Coconut water had the highest survivor percentage (100%) and IBA had the lowest (25%). Coconut water had the highest mean number of roots (5.25) and IBA had the least (1.75), but there was no significant difference between the values obtained from IBA and distilled water. IAA had the highest mean value (1.80) for new shoots, while IBA had the least value and there was no significant difference between the values obtained from coconut water and distilled water. Significant differences, however, did abound in the root length. Coconut water had the highest mean root length value (4.70 cm), followed by distilled water (1.95 cm), while IBA had 1.55 cm and IAA had the least value (0.80 cm). Thus the use of coconut water might enhance the development of stem cuttings of Annona muricata.

European beech seeds are characterised by deep physiological dormancy and to germinate, they require several weeks of stratification at 3°C. Seed dormancy is under hormonal regulation, but the de- tails of how hormones regulate deep dormancy in trees remain not yet well elucidated. We hypothesised that the mechanism of seed dormancy breaking is differentially regulated according to depth of dormancy. Expression of ABI5 and 14-3-3, members of the abscisic acid pathway, and RGL2, a member of gibberel- lic acid pathways, were examined at the protein and mRNA levels during dormancy alleviation of beech seeds. Unlike in non-deep dormant seeds, ABI5, 14-3-3 and RGL2 were present during nearly all periods of cold stratification in beech seeds, but during dormancy breaking and germination these proteins nearly disappeared. Relative abundances of ABI5 and 14-3-3 transcripts were the highest in dormant dry seeds, and during stratification it decreased gradually. We suppose that during stratification, de novo translation of proteins on the basis of deposited mRNA occurred. On the base of our research we can conclude that the seed dormancy breaking mechanism differs according to seed’s dormancy depth

Fast cooling of the organ slows down metabolism and activates intracellular enzymes, which minimizes the effects of warm ischemia. Unfortunately, hypothermia also results in inhibition of ATP synthesis, cell swelling and intracellular acidity. That is why research is continually being conducted to develop new fluids for rinsing and storing organs, as well as to optimize the composition of those that are already in use, which will allow for longer and more effective graft storage and restoration of their optimal functions after transplantation. This article provides current information on rinsing and storage fluids available on the global market. It also discusses tips for the fluid modifications with hormones and micronutrients.

Opis:
Population aging is becoming the biggest medical challenge of the 21st century. The body of elderly people shows a decreased ability to adapt to changing environmental and intracorporeal conditions. Aging is a process that is complex and stretches over a considerable length of time. As we get older our bodies progressively change, including the endocrine system. The changes are not unidirectional and do not affect all the endocrine glands to the same degree. The secretion of some hormones becomes impaired, while the secretion of other ones increases. There are also some hormones whose secretion does not change. The frequent concomitance of chronic diseases and taking many medications makes it difficult to interpret the results of studies on changes in hormone secretion in elderly people. This paper focuses on aging-related changes in the secretion of growth hormone, thyroid hormones, parathyroid and adrenal hormones.
Starzenie społeczeństw staje się największym wyzwaniem medycznym XXI w. Organizm osób w podeszłym wieku wykazuje obniżoną umiejętność przystosowywania się do zmiennych warunków środowiska zewnętrznego i wewnętrznego. Starzenie to proces złożony i znacznie rozciągnięty w czasie.

Opis:
In many studies on tourism in the environmentally valuable areas the advantages for both human health and the budgets of local governments and its residents themselves are emphasized, as well as for increasing knowledge and awareness of tourists through personal contact with nature. However, while we admire the colorful folders, describing the charms of experiencing the nature and plan a similar trip, we should remember that our vacation, especially when spend in environmentally valuable areas require some kind of responsibility and discipline and can not be completely carefree. Since the beginning of the 90s the growth of various forms of tourism is observed in Poland, both: mass and individual. People are increasingly looking for personal contact with nature, to rest from a daily activities, to regenerate and regain health, to acquire knowledge but also to find a unique and sometimes strong experiences to boast with them in front of friends. For a human those things are undoubtedly something positive, but the presence of a human in a space inhabited by wild animals may cause negative reactions, because a man is a potent inducer of stress for the animals. We know about the destructive effects of stress on human health from the daily press or from TV, and it seems that it may have just the same effect on life of animals. Current research techniques allow us to study stress levels in the bodies of wild animals by non-invasively, by analyzing the concentration of glucocorticoids (ie. Stress hormone) in their feces. This method was used for both research on non-predatory influence of predators on the prey and the impact of human on the wild animals. Studies have confirmed that human is a strong stress factor for animals (stressor), which the animals are trying to avoid if possible. It was also stated that he higher levels of stress hormones in animals in places and time related with greater touristic penetration. The negative impact of long-lasting stressor is the greater when rarer species are treated exposed on it. That is why the organization and planning of tourism in environmentally valuable areas should also consider its impact on local animals populations.
