Although Philip Larkin and Edward Hopper, an English poet and an American painter, worked in two different domains of art and different cultural contexts, their works evoke similar emotions and comments among the public. The recipients regularly mention three major themes of Larkin’s poems and Hopper’s paintings, which are loneliness, sadness and irony. This article aims to discuss how the poet represented them in words and the painter on canvas. I will study the individual style of both artists in order to reveal how various aspects of their works correspond with each other, leading to similar artistic effects.

The article presents an analysis of three paintings by one of the greatest American realist painters, Edward Hopper. The three selected works share a common denominator: they all address the concept of a car and the influence it has on the nation’s life—it has altered the way people traveled and expressed their identity. A car in Hopper’s works serves a twofold function, it allows its drivers and passengers to experience the land more as they can travel wherever they desire but, on the other hand, it contributes to a separation from their environment as the journey involves fragmentariness and rootlessness.

Bezpieczna strefa komfortu stanowi podstawę poczucia bezpieczeństwa i stabilizacji. Zapewnia człowiekowi optymalne warunki rozwoju, pozwalając mu na swobodę wyboru, usuwając bariery na drodze do sukcesu osobistego czy rozwoju. To stwierdzenie jest oczywiste i traktowane niemal jak dogmat. Jednocześnie jednak warto zwrócić uwagę na zjawisko paradoksu, które pojawia się w momencie, gdy brak wyzwań zmniejsza motywację do samorealizacji. Naturalna ambicja stymulowana jest poprzez stopniowe zdobywanie kolejnych progów. Izolacja, zaburzenie psychicznej i fizycznej strefy komfortu w czasie pandemii, wyzwoliła dwie odmienne reakcje. Pierwsza polega na biernej rezygnacji i wegetatywnym oczekiwaniu na zmianę przychodzącą z zewnątrz, druga natomiast na podjęciu aktywnego działania, mającego na celu zmierzenie się z sytuacją, podjęcie wyzwania, jakie ze sobą niesie.
A safe comfort zone is the basis for a sense of security and stability. It provides people with optimal conditions for development, ensuring them freedom of choice, removing barriers to personal success or development. This statement is self-evident and is almost treated as dogma. At the same time, however, it is worth paying attention to the phenomenon of paradox that appears when the lack of challenges reduces the motivation to self-fulfillment. Natural ambition is stimulated by the gradual achievement of new thresholds. Isolation, a disturbance of the mental and physical comfort zone during a pandemic, triggered two different reactions. The first consists in passive resignation and vegetative expectation of change coming from the outside, while the second is in taking active action aimed at facing the situation, taking up the challenge it brings.

This paper is a close-reading of Joyce Carol Oates’ short story The Woman in the Window inspired by Edward Hopper’s 11 A.M. An extensive narrative, which is overwritten over the painting and set in it’s space-time framework, enables the short story discussed herein to be considered as an ekphrastic apocryphon with subversive potential. Literary reaffirmation of the perspective of painted woman that is obviously omitted in Hopper’s masterpiece, allows for the alleged oppressiveness of the painting to be revealed.

The article is composed of two parts. In the first I discuss Lawrence Zbikowski’s Foundations of Musical Grammar, published by Oxford University Press in 2017, which is one of the major musicological works inspired by the latest achievements in cognitive science. Musical grammar, sometimes called cognitive musical grammar by the author, is based mainly on two concepts: an analogy (the mapping of systematic structural relationships between a source domain and a target domain), and a dynamic process (a coherent sequence of phenomena that is distributed over time and typified by parametric modulation or change). The second part of the article is my attempt to apply Zbikowski’s theory to a piece of music. As a musical example I have chosen the second movement of Compartment 2, Car 7 for vibraphone, violin, viola and cello by Paweł Szymański. At the end I conclude that the composer created an analogy between music and a dynamic process known to us from everyday life ─ a journey by train, seen from a passenger’s perspective.

In order to limit dust transfer during the operations of material transportation at the factories of the construction industry, factories of the mineral and raw materials complex employ special dust suppression bunkers. These devices are structures located above a railway hopper (either a truck body or a conveyor). Through the input portal of the device, the transported material is transferred. Dusting can also be carried out under the bunkers from the side of the hopper, into which the material is poured. The design of dust suppression bins should be accompanied by a simulation of dust propagation processes. The simulation should be carried out in order to minimize the dust emissions and to select the optimum locations for the dust suppression sprayers.

Odwadnianie wyrobisk górniczych kopalni odkrywkowej węgla brunatnego Bełchatów wymaga ciągłego i precyzyjnego monitoringu zmian warunków hydrogeologicznych w otaczającym górotworze. Zmiany te powodowane są przez ciągłą eksploatację odwodnieniowych studni głębinowych. Efekty ich pracy monitorowane są za pomocą systemu otworów obserwacyjnych obejmujących swym zasięgiem rejon prowadzonych robót górniczych w wyrobisku, jak również otoczenie kopalni w promieniu nawet kilkudziesięciu kilometrów. W tym aspekcie istotnym jest, aby zarówno studnie głębinowe jak i piezometry charakteryzowały się wysoką sprawnością. Wiarygodność prowadzonych obserwacji położenia zwierciadła wody ma zasadnicze znaczenie dla bezpieczeństwa prowadzenia robót górniczych w wyrobisku oraz optymalizacji kosztów budowy i eksploatacji podstawowego systemu odwodnienia złoża węgla brunatnego. W artykule opisano różne metody oceny stanu technicznego obiektów jakie obecnie stosowane są w kopalni Bełchatów dla nowych obiektów odwodnienia wgłębnego, jak i będących już w eksploatacji. Przedstawiono również, wypracowane w sposób praktyczny, kryteria oceny jakości studni odwadniających i otworów obserwacyjnych.
Drainage of the excavation pits of the Bełchatów opencast brown coal mine requires continuous and precise monitoring of changes in hydrogeological conditions in the surrounding rock mass. These changes are caused by the continuous exploitation of drainage deep wells. The effects of their work are monitored by means of a system of observation holes covering the area of mining works carried out in the excavation pits as well as the surroundings of the mine within a radius of several dozen kilometers. In this aspect, it is important that both deep wells and piezometers are characterized by high efficiency. The reliability of the observations/monitoring of the location of the water table which have been carried out, is of fundamental importance for the safety of mining works in the excavation pit and for the optimization of construction and operation costs of the basic drainage system of brown coal deposits. The article describes various methods of assessing the technical condition of the facilities which are currently used in the Bełchatów brown coal mine for new deep drainage facilities as well as for those which have already been in operation. In the article there are also presented some criteria, which were developed in a practical way, for assessing the quality of drainage wells and observation wells.

The subject of Wojciech Rusinek’s review is Marek Bieńczyk’s collection of essays Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida [Olga’s Apple, David’s Feet]. The author begins his reading of the book by placing it in the context of Bieńczyk’s earlier achievements: both artistic (novels, literary essays) and academic (bearing witness to his studies on Romanticism). While noting that Bieńczyk’s essays are governed by a wealth and a surprising variety of the explored themes, Rusinek emphasises, however, the worldview coherence of the volume. According to the author of the review, a key to the interpretation of all the essays in the book is “the praise of the taste of life,” which makes a new tone in Bieńczyk’s writing, so far associated mainly with the reflection on melancholy and melancholy discourse present in his artistic prose. In the following part of the review, by outlining the content of the essays devoted to Proust’s and Nerval’s prose, Hopper’s painting or Sempé’s drawings, Rusinek analyses the anthropological figures around which Bieńczyk’s digressive and slow reflection revolves: gesture, light, escape, frozen time. The reading of Bieńczyk’s work becomes enriched with an analysis of style (a role of stylization). Moreover, the review points out those fragments of Jabłko Olgi, stopy Dawida where a description of artistic works becomes smoothly linked with the elements of the author’s biography. In the conclusion of the reflection upon Bieńczyk’s essays, the author states that the essays clearly lean towards poetics of epiphany, which, in the view of the author of Jabłko Olgi…, would mean an unclear, veiled by an infinite number of borrowings, allegories, allusions and stylizations, suspending the flow of time, experience of existence in its inexpressible fullness.

The article focuses on behaviour of particular matter depending on marginal conditions with application of the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and DEM (Discrete Element Method). The Discrete Element Method was used for validation of the particular matter behaviour. The research on the bulk material behaviour concentrated on detection of changes of velocity in experimental materials under constant marginal conditions. The marginal condition is an obstacle on the bottom of the storage tank. As experimental material, we selected glass balls of various sizes. The diameter of the particles was 5 and 3 mm. These particles were mixed in a 50/50 proportion up to the capacity of the experimental sample. The output velocity was recorded by a high-speed camera and compared with numerical simulation in the DEM program. The resulting values of the particle velocity in both the PIV and DEM method were compared. The agreement between the experimental outputs and the numerical method in comparison of the flow velocity was on a high level. From results is possible to detect the period when all particles left the tested zone from charts illustrating the average velocity of all particles in the selected areas during drainage of the tank. By comparison of the locations with the period of the flow's termination in the individual zones we can declare that in the course of the flow, the matter leaves the higher delimited zones earlier than zones closer to the outlet hole. The time difference of the mutually successive zones then becomes shorter while approaching the outlet hole. To summarize the whole experiment complexly, we can declare that the particular matter is accelerated towards the outlet hole by action of the 30° incline of the hopper wall. In an area outside the outlet hole, this acceleration occurs especially in the x axis before the matter arrives above the discharge hole, where the core flow is under way and the direction of the matter's acceleration changes from the x axis to the y axis.
W artykule skupiono się na zachowaniu pyłu zawieszonego w zależności od warunków brzegowych z użyciem analizatora obrazu cząstek (ang. skrót PIV – Particle Image Velocimetry) oraz metody elementów dyskretnych (ang. skrót DEM). Metody elementów dyskretnych użyto w celu określenia zachowania pyłu zawieszonego. Badanie materiału sypkiego skupione było na wykryciu zmian w prędkości materiału wysypującego się ze zbiornika, w stałych warunkach brzegowych. Jako materiał eksperymentalny użyto szklane kule o różnych średnicach. Średnice wynosiły 5 oraz 3 mm. Kule wymieszano w proporcji 50/50, aż do osiągnięcia objętości próbki eksperymentalnej. Prędkość wyjściowa została zarejestrowana przez kamerę i porównana z symulacją numeryczną w programie DEM. Porównano uzyskane wyniki określenia prędkości cząstek z obu metod PIV i DEM. Zależność między wynikami eksperymentalnymi i prędkością strumienia wyznaczoną metodą numeryczną była na wysokim poziomie. Dzięki wynikom z wykresów przedstawiających średnią prędkość cząstek na wybranych powierzchniach można określić moment, w którym wszystkie cząstki opuściły badaną przestrzeń. Można stwierdzić, że w przepływ strumienia materiału opuszczającego zbiornik nie jest jednolity. Można stwierdzić, że pył zawieszony przyspiesza w kierunku odbioru, przy 30° kącie nachylenia ściany zbiornika.

Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań eksploatacyjnych dotyczących jednego z najważniejszych odbiorników energii mechanicznej na pogłębiarkach: śrub napędowych. Badania eksploatacyjne obejmowały pomiary parametrów charakteryzujących obciążenia śrub napędowych pogłębiarek w dwóch podstawowych stanach ich eksploatacji: robotach pogłębiarskich i pływaniu swobodnym. Przedstawione w pracy wyniki obejmują 10 pogłębiarek, w tym 8 pogłębiarek ssących nasiębiernych i 2 pogłębiarki wieloczerpakowe. Scharakteryzowano rozkłady obciążeń śrub napędowych, biorąc pod uwagę m.in. wartości średnie, odchylenie standardowe i współczynniki zmienności rozkładu obciążeń. Przedstawiono przykładowe histogramy obciążeń śrub na wybranych pogłębiarkach w badanych okresach czasu. Sformułowano wnioski odnośnie wartości średnich obciążeń śrub oraz współczynników zmienności rozkładu obciążeń. Wyniki przedstawione w pracy będą wy-korzystane przy tworzeniu modeli losowych opisujących rzeczywiste warunki eksploatacji elementów układów energetycznych pogłębiarek.
The article presents results of operation investigations regarding one of the most important receivers of mechanical energy on dredgers: propellers. Operation investigations covered measurements of characteristic parameters of loading propellers on dredgers in two basic conditions of their work: dredging works and sailing at sea. Presented results are based on 10 dredgers (8 trailing suction hopper dredgers and 2 bucket dredgers). In the paper characteristics of spread of propellers loading, i.e. average value, standard deviation and coefficients of variations of loading spred are presented. Examples of load distribution propellers on chosen dredgers during some period of time are shown as well. Conclusions are formulated regarding average value of propellers loading and coefficients of variations of loading spred. Results presented in the paper will be used as a base for creation of random models describing real conditions of operation of dredgers’ power plants.
