Opis:
Test−drilling predation by cassid gastropods on minute clypeasteroid echinoids has been studied in the fossil assemblage of the Heterostegina Sands (middle Miocene, Holy Cross Mountains, Poland). The analysed prey, collected from two sublithofacies of the Heterostegina Sands (coarse−grained Heterostegina Sands and fine−grained Heterostegina Sands), represent three species of Echinocyamus (E. linearis, E. pusillus and E. pseudopusillus). The drill holes were produced presumably by one cassid species, Semicassis miolaevigata. The investigation showed that drilling predation intensities varied among the prey species. Within both fine− and coarse−grained sands, E. linearis was drilled more frequently than E. pusillus. An intermediate value of drilling predation was recognised for E. pseudopusillus. The intensities of drilling predation recognised for some of the prey species (E. pusillus) varied also between (but never within) the sublithofacies. Drilling predation was both size− and site−selective. Larger individuals of E. linearis and E. pusillus were attacked more frequently and the aboral side of the test of all Echinocyamus species was drilled preferentially. An extremely high concentration of drill holes was observed in the apical disc and petals. Results obtained for the most abundant prey (E. linearis) indicate that the predatory behaviour of large cassids was somewhat different from those typical of small cassids. Large cassids drilled and consumed their prey almost always individually, whereas small cassids sometimes preyed upon the urchins in a group. Large cassids displayed also a higher site−selectivity. They more frequently drilled in the petals and apical disc. The patterns of drilling predation were most likely controlled by the potential energetic value of prey (measured by the internal volume/test thickness ratio), prey and predator mobility, prey mode of life, thickness and porosity of the prey's tests, as well as by the proportions between the size of the prey and size of the predator. The results suggest that the mode of life of the prey and its test structure can influence the drill hole morphology.

Opis:
The analysis of shell-drilling predation by naticid gastropods on molluscs from the Korytnica Clays (Middle Miocene, Holy Cross Mountains, Central Poland) has focused on the bivalve Corbula gibba and gastropods Natica tigrina and Hinia restitutiana. The results indicate that predatory behaviour of naticids varies depending on the size of the predator. When drilling corbulids, large naticids displayed higher site-selectivity than smaller naticids. Also, large naticids drilled energetically attractive prey (Hinia restitutiana and Natica tigrina) more frequently than small naticids. Preferential drilling displayed by large naticids from the Korytnica Clays increases the net energy gain for the predator and in result allows it to drill more effectively.
Duże Naticidae znacznie częściej niż małe atakowały H. restitutiana i N. tigrina (Fig. 2A, B), natomiast małe Naticidae częściej niż duże atakowały C. gibba (patrz Fig. 1A—D oraz porównaj sumę NLR i NLL z NSR i NSL w Tabeli l).

Opis:
It is widely accepted that hydrogen bonds contribute into a variety of meaningful processes in nature and human body which has reflection in the share of the scientific community attention over the last decades. Recent years have seen a veritable explosion of research into noncovalent interactions that are analogous to the commonly acknowledged H-bonds. It became obvious that detailed investigation of these types of short contacts should be extensively considered as the main target for theoretical chemistry. In 2007 the article described the σ-hole concept enlightened the phenomena of the halogen bond. Later extensions of this concept into the other elements in periodic table provided the necessary knowledge about the origin of these interactions and gave arise for introducing the other members of the σ-hole bonds family as the chalcogen, pnicogen, tetrel and triel bonds or even those involving noble gases. The foundation of the σ-hole theory is the presence of the region of thinned electronic density caused by the anisotropic accumulation of the negative charge on the covalent R-X bond (where X=halogen) what causes the rising of positive electrostatic potential on the outer side of X atom. This particular location becomes the binding site for the approaching nucleophile. As the σ-hole is located in plane of molecule on an extension of covalent bond, some molecules also contain a σ-hole region situated above and below the plane of the molecular framework. In current work the representative examples of complexes bonded through the σ- or π-holes and their most important features have been briefly given. The main goal was to show the diversity of this type of interaction which covers nearly all the elements of the block p of periodic table. Triel bonds are produced mainly by -hole interaction with Lewis bases and can be characterized by different nature for different elements (boron complexes are stabilized by electrostatics and charge transfer, while Al and Ga ones mostly by electrostatics). In tetrel, pnicogen and chalcogen bonded complexes it has been shown that during the process of dimerization the substantial geometric distortion is observed on the -hole donor molecules. It causes the creation of the second complexation path through newly created -hole. In chalcogen bonded complexes the alternative dimer is stabilized by π-hole and something like - due to presence of lone electron pair of chalcogen. Within the halogen bonds one can highlight the issue of weakening the negative hyperconjugation on the molecules of methylated derivatives of ammonia (like methylamine). It is caused by the appearing of σ-hole donor (FCCl3) which takes control of the majority part of intramolecular charge transfer and in this way enhances the link between subunits at the price of hampering the internal conjugation. Finally, the short report of aerogen bonds in literature is inserted in the last chapter of current paper. Some molecules with noble gases connected with highly electron-withdrawing constituents are able to generate both: σ- and π-hole on their surfaces and in consequences the stable complexes with Lewis bases (for example, diazines). The presence of the latter proves that the discussed types of interaction are very common for massive amount of atoms, even for those which are considered as less reactive.

The Brazilian split test on a centrally holed disc (referred to as a ring-disc specimen) is an important indirect method for determining the tensile strength of rock. This paper studies the effect of the diameter d of the center hole and its position, defined by the eccentricity b and the inclination angle of the eccentric hole, on the peak load, failure pattern and horizontal stress of the disc specimen via laboratory experiments and numerical modeling using the finite element method (FEM). Static Brazilian split tests are conducted on an intact disc and three types of holed discs: C-specimens containing a central hole with different diameters, EH-specimens with a horizontally eccentric hole and ER-specimens with a rotationally eccentric hole.

A novel mid-infrared polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on GaS is proposed. The high birefringence is achieved by using the cladding structure of alternating arrangement of square and circular air holes as well as introducing double elliptical air holes. The finite element method (FEM) is utilized to investigate the mode coupling characteristics in the proposed PBS. The results show that the highest extinction ratio of 115 dB and shortest length of only 40 μm can be realized at a wavelength of 4 μm. A wide bandwidth of 200 nm ranging from 3.9 to 4.1 μm is obtained.

Opis:
With the goal of decreasing the stress concentration along the hole boundary in an orthotropic plate under inequi-biaxial loadings, an optimum design of the fiber angle and hole orientation is presented. The maximum absolute tangential stress along the hole boundary is taken as the objective function, and the fiber orientation angle and the hole orientation angle are considered as design variables. The conformal transformation method of a complex function and the Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm are used. Two non-circular shapes, ellipse and hexagon are taken as examples to analyze the problem. Based on the results, we can conclude that the major axis of elliptical holes should be designed in the direction of the maximum external loading for a perforated structure in an orthotropic plate. However, the principal direction that has the larger Young’s modulus should be inclined to the direction of the minimum loading, especially for a significantly orthotropic plate.

Small water bodies are very diversified environmentally, and also characterized by a considerable variation range of environmental parameters. these two features are responsible for the fact that the fauna of water mites is characterized by a considerable species diversity and that eurytopic species are prevalent. Due to the eurytopic character of the species it is very difficult to define the rules governing their environmental distribution, which probably often has a local character. The present study is an attempt at analyzing this problem, focusing on water mite fauna of kettle holes in Rostock surroundings (Germany). The main factor diversifying the fauna of studied reservoirs is their trophism. Correspondence analysis distinguished three separate groups among the reservoirs. the isolation of the reservoirs was an important factor diversifying the water mite fauna.

In 2011–2014, the occupancy of nest-boxes by secondary hole-nesting birds and their breeding success was investigated in pine stands of the Augustów Forest (North-Eastern Poland). In the studied area of 12600 ha, the share of Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris L. in the stands was 92%. On average, birds occupied 54% and bats 3% of the 224–317 nest boxes controlled yearly. Nest boxes were also used by the Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum L. as food caches. In total, broods of nine secondary hole-nesting species were observed, but only four bird species nested in each year of study. The most numerous species, occupying 53–60% of all boxes each year was the Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca Pall. The Great Tit Parus major L. occupied 15–24% and the Coal Tit Periparus ater L. 10–12% of available nest-boxes, while the Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus L. used 2–7% of nest boxes. The yearly breeding success was highest for tits (Great Tit – 52–84%, Coal Tit – 50–72%) and strongly variable for the Pied Flycatchers – 38–78%. Broods were lost due to predation by martens Martes sp. (38%) and great spotted woodpeckers Dendrocopos major L. (6%) as well as nest competition (2%). The nest-boxes were occupied at a constant rate during the following four years after their exposition. Over 67% of the new nest-boxes were occupied annually which means new nest-boxes (up to 4 years) were occupied significantly more often than boxes older than 4 years.

Fatigue behaviour is one of the most important properties of modern airplanes and rivets influence it strongly. According to the literature, the NACA riveting offers a multiple increase in the fatigue life of joints. The aim of this paper is to investigate the benefits offered by the NACA riveting procedure with respect to the residual stress and strain distribution after riveting as well as rivet hole expansion. Experimental and numerical approaches were adopted. The conventional riveting with both the universal and countersunk rivets was compared with the NACA riveting. The countersunk angle and depth in the case of the NACA riveting was modified somewhat relative to the values met in the literature. For these three cases, strain gauge measurements during riveting, hole expansion measurements and FE calculations were performed. The hole expansion measurement with the use of Computer Tomography(CT) was proposed. Only the FE calculations unambiguously indicate better fatigue properties of the NACA riveting. The proposed method of hole expansion measurement requires further research to increase its accuracy.

The instantaneous primary emission spectra of particles radiating from Schwarzschild black holes and maximally rotating Kerr black holes of masses 1013 – 1015 g were investigated and C code, BlackHawk was used for the simulations. From a Schwarzschild black hole of mass 3.53×1013 g, gluons had the lowest cutoff energy, 199 MeV. The emission spectra were dominated by coloured particles, quarks having with the highest overall emission rate, 2.826×1022 GeV-1s-1 at energy 1.205 GeV. The leptons e±, μ±, τ± showed similar variation in emission rates. The only particles emitted with energies below the rest mass of u quarks were neutrinos, photons, and e±. At greater particle energies (> ~ 2 GeV) the emission rates of all particles were almost equivalent. The emission of vector bosons, Z0 and W± were negligible and became significant when the mass reduced to ~1011 g and then gluons, W±, Z0 and photons were emitted similar to each other with a peak at energy, 280 GeV. The emitting rates of gluons, quarks, neutrinos, W±, e±, μ±, τ±, Z0, photons, and Higgs bosons are in decreasing order respectively. As the mass of the black hole is reduced to 1.06×108 g, quarks were emitted at the highest rate 2.826×1022 GeV-1s-1 at 4010 GeV peak energy and at energies between rest mass energy of Higgs boson and 1.25×105 GeV, the emission of Higgs bosons exceeded the emission of quarks. For maximally rotating Kerr black hole of mass 3.53×1013 g, W±, Z0 and Higgs boson were emitted at higher emission rates 1012 – 1015 GeV-1s-1 and for mass 1.06×108 g, the gluons had the highest overall emission rate at the peak energy. At extremely high energies, the gluon emission rates are less than the emission rates of Higgs bosons, quarks, neutrinos, and e±, μ±, τ±. The spin-dependent behaviour of spectra is also present.

We investigated whether high−intensity road traffic affects the nestbox occupancy pattern of secondary hole−nesting birds. Field studies were carried out in two forests in south−eastern Poland (Lasy Janowskie forest and Polichna forest). Both complexes were included in NATURA 2000 network. In our knowledge it was first field experiment on road−traffic noise influence on forest birds, conducted in the Polish environmental conditions. The results of this experiment can be used in work on the impact of road projects on forest birds. Nestboxes were hung at twelve linear transects located perpendicularly to the busy road and they were regularly inspected in 2011−2012. Road noise was measured by use of a digital measurer of sound level at each nestbox. Monitoring the activity of predators on the study area was done with the help of digital trail cameras and experiment with use of artificial nest with eggs. Noise level decreased with distance from the road. In the first year of experiment we observed that the birds settled preferentially habitats in the vicinity of road. However in next season the number of occupied nestboxes was independent from the distance from road. We found that the pressure caused by predators on the study area was very low, creating safer nesting places for birds. Our results provide evidence that these birds are well adapted to cope with anthropogenic noise. Some species of birds preferred nesting in neighbourhood of road.

During regular use of the steering wheel mounted on a boat, two cracks emanating from a fastener hole were noticed which, consequently, caused final fracture of the wheel. To determine the behavior of a boat steering wheel with cracks present, assessment of a fractured wheel was performed. Torque moments of the fasteners were measured prior to removing the steering wheel from the boat. Visual and dye penetrant inspection followed along with the material detection. Besides using experimental procedures, assessment of the fractured wheel was performed using finite element analysis, i.e. stress intensity factor values were numerically determined. Variation of stress intensity factor with crack length is presented. Possible causes of crack occurrence are given and they include excessive values of fastener torque moments coupled with fretting between fastener and fastener hole that was poorly machined. Results obtained by this assessment can be taken for predicting fracture behavior of a cracked steering wheel and as a reference in the design, mounting and exploitation process of steering wheels improving that way their safety in transportation environment.
