In the following article, taking into account the difficulties in defining the concept of oral history, I would like to propose a multifaceted approach to the problem. Instead of trying to define the main issue in a traditional, explicit way, I will try to define it from different perspectives. In this way I would like to prove that oral history and its complex construction cannot be defined in a short and explicit way and the multitude of existing definitions lead to chaos and some kind of reduction. My way of defining, which focuses on highlighting significant characteristics and all the necessary elements, is supposed to overcome the previous limitations. Instead of one definition, I present several subsequent formulations, which result from the multifaceted construction of this research practice.

The starting point for this paper is a general interest in the faint presence of methodologically oriented analyses within the history of education. The methodology of history of education is a rare term on the map of scientific categories (likewise the theory of history of education). One can multiply reasons for such situation, pointing institutional deficiencies of science or stressing the fact that this term is for some researchers unwelcome and should be criticized. Although such statements are worth tackling, the present considerations focus on different research trail, being an analysis of obstacles for crystallization of the methodology reflection within history of education. These are, e.g., the lack of paradigmatic clarity and also definitional instability of contemporary methodology of history as such. Nevertheless, one should not treat this situation as disadvantage, rather as a need of different historical imagination. Responses to this need should be developed and potential contexts of such historical imagination are presented in the final part of this paper.

In this article, the author discusses the unanswered subject of the methodology of researching the history of safety. The starting point of his deliberations is the presentation of safety issues, the subject of safety history and discussion of the directions and methods of history research indicated in the literature. Next, the author justifies the necessity to start work on the methodology of safety history, then indicates the emergence of separate safety subdisciplines such as: safety philosophy, sociology of safety, safety psychology, safety culture. The natural consequence of this development of science, which is safety, should be the introduction of a safety history. An additional argument is the conduct of a subject in this field at Polish universities. In the further part of the article periodical patterns of history are presented. It is intended as a starting point for conducting safety history research. Finally, the author analyses the possibilities of the research.

The article concerns the problem of a lack of both academic tools as well as a catalogue of basic epistemological objectives that could serve oral history in Poland. It has to be stated, however, that there are already many institutions, conferences and journals, that focus on the issue of oral history. The author proposes some solutions that could improve this methodological gap, based on her own experience in oral history, such as introducing a research diary as a scientific research tool.

The presentation methodology of the summary of these pupils' explorations of private family materials used in history lessons forms an inseparable part.

In recent years, a canon of modern German literature has been widely discussed, particularly in the context of educational reforms. The discourse has taken place both in the public sphere of (print) media and within the fields of literary studies as well as teaching mehodology, with obvious interferences. Positions reach from demands to foster and revise a canon to its complete rejection as an educated middle-class phenomenon. While literary studies have developed a nomenclatura of the canon concept and reflected on criteria for its compilation, teaching methodology recommends – in view of competence-oriented literature courses – to focus on the teaching of a basic knowledge of literary history, which seems to make the consideration of a canon indispensible in a certain framework.

The author discusses an issue of forming questions in oral history. There are two types of them – research questions and interview questions. Instead of analyzing how to ask questions, the interviewer should rather focus on why to ask them. The article proves that asking questions in oral history is less about formal elements such as what language should be used or what matters should be raised, but more about such elements as emotions or the overall atmosphere of an interview. The author gives some clues on how to prepare proper questions, what difficulties may appear and what to avoid in order to carry out a good interview.

The geopolitical changes in Central and Eastern Europe which began in 1989 influenced also changes in the status of the field of history. In an attempt to change the perception of the field, a turn to the Middle Ages could be observed, as the times of prosperity in the Kingdoms of Bohemia, Hungary and Poland could serve as an excellent foundation for building a national identity. Thus, the authors propose a complex picture of historically and artistically oriented Medieval Studies in Poland against the backdrop of the situation in Central and Eastern Eu‑ rope, trying to ascertain how and to what extent the events of 1989 influenced the status and development of the discipline. Thirty years after the Yalta Conference, what can be observed is a gradual process of opening the discipline onto new methodologies and technological changes, as well as realizing its capabilities, which were hitherto suppressed by the oppressive political system. The natural generational change contributes to solidifying practices which the youngest generation of art historians takes for granted. However, the influences of inertia, deeply-rooted complexes and post-mortem victory of communist propaganda cannot be omitted. For the ma‑ jority of academic centers in Poland, it is virtually paradigmatic to talk about art in a very nar‑ row geographical context, accompanied by the tendency to isolate phenomena with clear ties to the European context. Too often is art in Poland seen as an expression and a consequence of its peripheral status, while almost overlooking the uniqueness and originality of many artistic phenomena. Moreover, a vision of Poland as a homogenous entity in its contemporary borders persists in the subconscious of the society, which constitutes a serious hindrance in the spread‑ ing of knowledge and is often used as a tool in historical politics. In addition, it should be noted that, unfortunately, many good practices, such as the obligation of familiarity with the entirety of the literature on the subject, begin to disappear, perhaps in connection with the “publish or perish” mentality and the need to fulfill the obligations towards the academic institution. Para‑ doxically, then, the political upheaval of 1989 brought in the discipline of art history, as well as the field of humanities as a whole, both positive as well as detrimental changes.

The article deals with an issue of the possible applications of oral history to teaching history at Polish schools. The author states that oral history as an element of educating young people should become a natural part of teaching processes. It can become a factor increasing their awareness of their local history and of the links connecting them with the previous generations. It is also an efficient way of avoiding teaching based only on archival facts and events. This statement is illustrated by chosen examples of the use of oral history at schools and discusses the possibilities of its further use.

The article presents a critique of a research method whereby historical sources could not have possibly lied as they were targeted at the addressees who knew the actual course of the events described or referred to. This attitude toward the sources has its antecedence in Snorri Sturluson’s argument on the reliability of skaldic poetry. To his mind, the poems were biased but still valuable, in a way, as they were declaimed before the rulers who would have perceived an untrue account “as a mockery, rather than a praise”. The question arises, what kind of a situation Snorri tried to preclude: one where a mean warrior would have been shown as a great hero? Or, perhaps, one where a defector would have been portrayed as a warrior bravely marching in the first rank? The story of Giffard from the Morkinskinna saga seems to offer the answer. Giffard fled from the battlefield but had a praise poem dedicated to him, which the (real) character aptly deciphered as derision aimed at him.

When Aristotle asked at what particular moment we can say that an army is fleeing, which is certainly not when individual soldiers start leaving the battlefield, he formulated a problem that is important also for today’s art history: are there any moments in the history of art that can be called turning points? In individual artistic careers, such points are related to crises, allowing the artist to overcome an impasse and find a way toward reaching a goal. Quite often, such a turn occurs suddenly, at some particular moment which ancient Greeks called the kairos. The changes in art approached en bloc also happen thanks to the background of values and some goal of artistic creation. A turning point may imply overcoming a crisis or a period of decline and decadence – always a state of affairs defined in negative terms. A separate case is definitely a political decree that triggers off a change, which implies violence committed on culture. Finally, in academic art history a turning point may be related not only with a crisis, but also with evolution. It’s perception is relative, but because of that the history of art can be rewritten.

Artykuł ma na celu analizę porównawczą powieści Teodora Parnickiego Muza dalekich podróży i Lodu Jacka Dukaja, w zakresie technik artystycznych oraz świadomości filozofii i przebiegu procesu historycznego. Mimo iż pisarze ci przynależą do zupełnie innych formacji kulturowych, pokoleniowych i literackich i dzieli ich warsztat pisarski, to obie powieści łączy zainteresowanie historiozofią i metodologią historii oraz literacki namysł nad polskością i jej mitami. Powieści te zaliczyć można do gatunku historii alternatywnych. Parnicki zniechęcony do historii w pozytywistycznym sensie (á la Ranke), odrzuca możliwość dotarcia do zdeponowanej w źródłach prawdy historycznej.
The paper is focused to comparative analysis of the novels Muza dalekich podróży by Teodor Parnicki (“A Muse of Distant Journeys”) and Lód (“The Ice”) by Jacek Dukaj. The author compares the artistic techniques as well as the historiosophical consciousness and the awareness of the historical process in the aforementioned novels. The two writers belong to different cultural and literary generations and employed different poetics, still, it is possible to compare the historiosophical and methodological aspects of their works and their ways of thinking about Polishness and cultural myths. The two novels may be treated as realizations of the alternate history genre. Muza dalekich podróży called by the author himself a “historical-fantastical novel”, includes a part entitled “It could have been like that” („Mogło być właśnie tak”) describing the rebirth of Poland after a successful November Uprising. In Jacek Dukaj’s science-fiction novel history “froze” in 1908. Poland still remains divided in the years 1924–1930, never freed after the Partitions. For both Parnicki and Dukaj, creating alternative versions of Polish history was the way to criticizing the model of writing “to uplift hearts” introduced by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Their attitude towards the methodology of history is worth deeper analysis. Parnicki, who lost his enthusiasm towards the 19th century type of history á la Ranke, rejected the idea of historical truth preserved in historical sources. Dukaj, on the contrary, created a postmodernist methodology of history out of the paradigms of the 19th century historiosophy, thus undermining the status of the historical knowledge as “science”.

Thomism
Opis:
Etienne Gilson relied his concept of doing history of philosophy on Thomistic metaphysics, so it enable him to distinguish between the proper history of philosophy and history of philosophical texts or history of philosophical doctrine; the former concerns philosophical problems disregarding their historical contexts. He referred to the way of studying history of philosophy, which was worked out by St. Thomas Aquinas as well as Aristotle and Alexandrian scholars before him, who were distinguishing between publication, understanding, interpretation and valuation of the text in text studying. Such history of philosophy allows not only to make synthesis within its framework, but also to pose a question on the adequacy of historical solutions of philosophical problems to real being; in that way history of philosophy becomes auxiliary and supporting science.

Opis:
The article concerns Wojciech Kętrzyński (1838–1918), the long-term director of the Ossoliński National Institute in Lviv. He was above all an outstanding historian, a passionate researcher with great methodological background. For the contemporaries, he was undoubtedly a scientific authority, an expert in the Polish Middle Ages, Prussian lands, genealogy and diplomacy, and a publisher of historical sources. Less known are his other merits in the field of research, such as interest in the history of law. There is no doubt that they remained beyond his main scientific interests; nevertheless one may say that Kętrzyński was also a researcher in the history of law. It should also be noted that he received a good education in this respect during his studies in Königsberg, especially in the field of Roman law and German law. Mostly, his research concerned the history of law in the Prussian lands and the original socio-legal system of Polish lands. It should be emphasized, however, that in these disciplines Kętrzyński usually limited himself to searching for sources of law and the system, their analysis and explanation. He rarely made detailed analytical or wider synthetic conclusions. He kept up to date with the historical and legal literature; he also maintained intense contacts with the entourage of Polish and foreign (German-speaking) scholars dealing with the history of law. Kętrzyński’s findings were scarcely maintained, but they undoubtedly constituted a step forward in the development of historical and legal sciences. The source publications and possibly their translations remain valid, as do numerous extracts from archival sources, which are nowadays partly missing.

Opis:
Ewa Domańska, Professor at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Poland) and Stanford University (USA), historian of historiography and methodologist of history, formulated interesting comments about the state of humanities and social sciences. The development of interdisciplinary research causes the interpenetration of different disciplines. Although this kind of research is promising, inspiring as well as influencing the development of science, careless research may cause some threats in the longer term. According to Domańska, the lack of qualifications and reliability in this area (especially in the area of theory and methodology) undermines the authonomy of the main disciplines and decline in the professionalism of research. This led the author to create the project, which aims to defend the independence of the threatened disciplines as well as their ‘re-professionalisation’. It can be achieved by strongly emphasizing the role of theory in science; a strong embeddement of a discipline in the theory. Domańska’s concept can be a recipe, which is a dichotomic project. Firstly, it supposes a ‘practical methodology’, which is a constructing of the theory thanks to empirical research material. Secondly, it supposes a ‘virtue epistemology’, which is the ethical aspect of the researcher’s attitude and his work. The aim of the paper is to discuss Domańska’s project and underline the originality of her concept in the context of economic and social sciences. The economic history is a specific discipline which develops at the crossroad of history and economics. It lets me put forward the thesis that Domańska’s suggestions are relevant to the research of economic history. I will show what cognitive chances are the result of the ontology of economic history. I will question what the possible threats are for the main disciplines (history and economics) as a result of the lack of professionalism in the interdisciplinary research of the economic past, and ask if Domańska’s project is attractive for the economic history research thanks to the strong setting in the ‘practical methodology’ in the theory. I also ask what the role of new theoretical approaches in that area is, and whether it is possible to formulate innovatory conceptions in the economic history. Finally, I question the role of ‘virtue epistemology’ or the ethical aspect of an economic historian’s work.

Opis:
Ewa Domańska, a distinguished historian of historiography and the methodologist of history, has provided an insightful commentary on the state of humanities and social sciences. The development of interdisciplinary research in social sciences and humanities has resulted in varying outcomes and interpenetrations. Interdisciplinary research helps the development of science. However, studies undertaken with less rigor may pose some threats into the long term. According to Domańska, the lack of qualifications and care (especially with respect to theory and methodology) may undermine the autonomy of a disciplines and the credibility of research in the given field. This timely warning prompted the author to create the project with the aim to assert the independence of the threatened disciplines and to “re-professionalize” these areas of study. This is to be achieved by emphasizing the role of theory in science-a strong embeddedness of a discipline in the theory. Domańska’s concept, in the form of a dichotomous project, seems to be a recipe for achieving this goal. It presupposes, on the one hand, a “practical methodology”, i.e. constructing the theory basing on empirical research material, and on the other hand the so-called “virtue epistemology”, which stresses an ethical aspect of the researcher’s attitude and labour. The aim of the paper is to discuss Domańska’s project and to draw attention to the originality of her concept in the context of economic and social sciences. The economic history is a peculiar discipline founded at the intersection of history and economics. Thus, it is possible to put forward the thesis that Domańska’s suggestions are relevant to the research of economic history. The author will seek to determine what cognitive opportunities arise from the ontology of economic history and their potential threats to the main disciplines of history and economics. The article will also examine if Domańska’s project is appropriate for the economic history research as it is deeply embedded in “practical methodology”, and so in theory. Next, the author aims to consider the role of new theoretical approaches in this field, and whether it is possible to formulate novel concepts within the scope of the economic history. Finally, the author will attempt to assess the significance of “virtue epistemology” or the ethical aspect of an economic historian’s work.
