Opis:
This article is an attempt to analyse the portrayal of the body in the lyrics of Polish hip hop songs. The analysis focuses on one hundred randomly chosen songs which include the lexeme ciało ‘body’. All the analysed songs were written by Polish rappers after the year 2000. The paper begins by describing the hip hop subculture; it also presents an overview of the definitions of the term ciało ‘body’ offered by dictionaries of contemporary Polish. The analysis of the collected lyrics reveals that rappers use the noun ciało ‘body’ to refer to ‘an organism, alive or dead, seen as a whole’ as well as to ‘a female’ presented as a sexual object.

Opis:
This article was developed on the basis of my master’s thesis on hip-hop culture as a factor shaping young people’s identity. In today’s world, young people are increasingly looking for ways to express themselves and their values, which may be associated with belonging to different types of subcultures. Growing individuals manifest their independence by disagreeing with the surrounding reality and defying the prevailing social principles. It seems appropriate to belong to a chosen youth subculture. I will devote my attention to the subculture originating among the black Americans, namely the hip-hop subculture. The rap environment is very often associated with a pejorative phenomenon, vulgarisms, blockers derived from the social margin. In today’s times, in the era of ubiquitous openness and availability of mass media, in the consumer-oriented environment, hip-hop has become a part of the lives of most young, adolescent audiences. The article will also present the development of hip-hop culture in Poland and around the world, as well as the effects that it brought in the process of shaping the identity of young people.

Opis:
The article deals with the topic of contestation in hip-hop songs. The author goes through historical sources that have created hip-hop and notices that this subculture has been built upon cultural tradition of contestation. This fact allows to include hip-hop in a wider aspect. The analysis of selected examples shows how the subculture in question creates the image and the concept of power. The author observes that the hip-hop subject defines social reality as a cause of imprisonment. The study of rappers’ textual self-creations allows to deduce that they claim to know the only path to freedom. As a result, hip-hop culture is constructed around the dichotomy, exemplified in a division into “us” and “them”. The author detects that hip-hop songs use propaganda language and war stylizations, thus they foreshadow and fight for a total reformation of power scheme.

Text passagesin Polish hip-hop. An analysis of description of the urban space in selected rap lyricsThe goal of this article was to analyze the issue of how discourse of polish hip-hop describes cities. Mostly polish artist’s lyrics were discussed, they were investigated in the context of the whole hip-hop culture. Article was divided into three main analytic parts. The first one presents, how rappers “read” the city. Analyzed works treat the city space as structure, which expresses deeply hidden substance. The next chapter discusses the ways of representing city, they are considered to be “textual passages” – poetics of such texts is based on discontinuity, it tries to represent dynamics of ever changing space. The last part of article examines the topic of “district”, which in hip-hop is understood as the central space, building foundations of hip-hop’s ontology. This research shows unique coherence of many different texts, that were created in one subculture. Also, this research can be a point of departure for further examination of the presented topics.

Author’s interest in the subject stems from the mnearly 20-year presence in hip-hop in Poland and everyday and abusive relationships often convinced of hip-hop to the areas of social pathology. The study involved 60 people who identify with the subculture of hip-hop teenagers aged 16 – 18 years in the majority of high school students. The research method was a structured interview. The results show an interesting and internally varied image of hip-hop subculture. Interesting may be differences in views on the environment from the perspective of respondents gender. Girls look more critically on their own subculture and often admit that the group use drugs and violence occurs. Respondents represent a complex picture of the world highlighting the significance of musical texts in the description of their reality. Participants evaluate their own subculture rather as a happy people, with life goals related to the plans of other ordinary teenagers. Everyone in hip-hop subculture express aversion to the police and presenting its own internal code of conduct and values. They are reluctant to paint graffiti on monuments, but didn’t bother of destruction the facade of other buildings, and railcars. They have no sense of uniformity required by declaring that hip-hop is not only the dress code, but a lifestyle.
