Opis:
The development of weldable steels was discussed together with the methods of obtaining them. The influence of these methods on steel properties was explained. Research was performed on quenched weldable S540Q steel of high strength. Basic mechanical properties of this steel were determined. The results of a static tensile test and technological bending test were given. Next, steel sheets were welded by semi-automatic MAG method. The welds quality was examined and their future suitability was stated. Mechanical properties of the joints welded of this steel were determined. Mechanical properties of native material and welded joints were compared. Joints microstructure was examined in the weld axis, in the heat influence zone and in the native material. Fatigue tests were conducted in the cycle of nonsymmetrical tension – compression of welded joints. The analytical fatigue strength was obtained and it was compared with fatigue strength of welded joints. Tests results were elaborated with the static analysis of linear regression. Wohler diagrams were made after conducting fatigue tests. Finally, weldable joints were melted by TIG method without adding filler metal. The angle and radius of welds nobs entrance into the native material was measured. The increase of fatigue strength is related to the decrease of geometric notch on the edges of weld nobs.

The paper shows the results of non-destructive and destructive tests carried out on high strength martensitic steel – Weldox 1300. It is used for the construction of crane lorries, mining equipment and submarines. During testing a test joint of the following dimensions was used: length – 600 mm, width – 300 mm, and thickness – 9.5 mm. Welding was executed using flux-cored wire Union x90. The results obtained in the following tests were analysed: nondestructive tests, tensile and bend test, impact test, hardness test, and macrotexture test. Non-destructive testing: visual, magnetic particle and ultrasonic inspections showed no irregularities. The material met the acceptance requirements. The results of the tensile test of the examined steel amounted to 1047 MPa on average. The samples were broken in the weld. During root bend and tensile test the specimen was bent up to the 180° angle during which no welding discontinuities were observed. During face bend and tensile test, the sample was bent to the angle of approx. 40°– visible cracks. Rupture of the sample in the weld and cracks created when bending are due to the reduced flow stress of the additional material against the tested steel. Energy of the impact test for specimens notched in the weld was 37.9 [J], and for specimens notched in the heat affected zone was 41.5 [J]. The average hardness of the specimen was determined at the level of 317 HV. Macroscopic testing did not show any delamination or welding discontinuations. In addition, strength tests of the base material were carried out. The results were compared with the product certificate provided by the steel manufacturer. The paper presents the results of tests, which can be used during factory production control of high strength steel.

The effect of low-alloy additions on low-C steels hardenability is reported. Various as-quenched materials with microstructures consisting of low-C (granular) bainitic (B), mixed bainitic (B)/martensitic (M) and fully martensitic microstructures were produced. Results show that for a given cooling rate, an increase of austenite grain size (AGS) and of Mo and Cr contents decreases the transformation temperatures and promotes martensite formation.

Opis:
The hydrogen embrittlement of metals is caused by the penetration and accumulation of hydrogen atoms inside the metal. The failure of the product due to hydrogen embrittlement is delayed in time and does not occur immediately after its manufacture, but several hours, days, or even weeks later. Therefore, the chances of detecting hydrogen embrittlement when checking the quality of the finished product are very slim. The use of high-strength bolts in industry is associated with the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. This phenomenon poses a threat to the safe use of devices by limiting or completely losing the functionality of the bolt joint. Even a low influence of moisture can trigger failure mechanisms. The article proposes a method for assessing the risk of hydrogen embrittlement for high-strength bolts in class12.9. For this purpose, bolts made of material grade 32CrB4 were prepared and in a controlled manner the grain flow inconsistency was made, leading in extreme cases to the production of the forging lap. To perform the study, the device proposed by the European Assessment Document (EAD) was adapted to the testing of hydrogen embrittlement of threaded fasteners in concrete. The concrete substrate was replaced with metal spacers that were preloaded with a bolt. The use of the wedge distance under the bolt head led to the generation of two stress states - tensile and compressive, which translated into an increased risk of hydrogen embrittlement. After being tested, the bolts were visually and microscopically inspected to assess potential locations for cracks and hydrogen propagation. As a result of the conducted tests, it was found that the prepared test method allows to assess the resistance or susceptibility of the bolt to threats related to hydrogen embrittlement.

The aim of this work was to develop basic parameters of hot rolling and controlled cooling technology allowing to obtain the microlaminated (lamellar) microstructure in a lean-alloy structural steel containing 3÷5 wt % Al. Thermo-mechanical rolling tests of two experimental steels were carried out in a semi-industrial line comprising a one – stand reversing rolling mill. The final microstructure of the specimens subjected to rolling in the γ + α stability region characterised with the microlaminated morphology composed of lamellae of ferrite with thickness down to 1 μm or less and lamellae or grains of phases developed during transformation of the austenite. Determined parameters of the thermo-mechanical processing allowed to achieve very attractive mechanical properties of the experimental steels: tensile strength over 1.0 GPa and ductility level (total elongation) better than 15%.

The paper presents results of metallographic investigations of spot welds made of high-strength steel HSLA340 and dual-phase DP600 steel. Low-carbon martensite microstructure was found in the weld nugget of HSLA steel. The DP600 steel shows martensite and bainite microstructure. For both steels, no carbides of microadditives were found because they dissolved in liquid nugget and could not precipitate again because of rapid heat abstraction. Moreover, no transcrystallisation was found in both steels, which proves good mixing of the materials within the weld.

The participation of high strength steels in marine and offshore structures is increasing, which makes it necessary to develop recommendations for underwater repair welding works. The article presents the results of bead-on-plate welded specimens made of S700MC high strength steel in underwater wet welding conditions by covered electrodes. Three specimens with heat input values in the range 0.91-1.05 kJ/mm were made. The specimens were subjected to visual, metallographic, macro- and microscopic tests as well as hardness measurements using the Vickers method. It was found that the higher heat input leads to formation of mixed bainite-martensite microstructure in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). Lower heat input value results in presence of martensite in HAZ. It was shown that in the scope of the performed tests, the maximum hardness of HAZ did not exceed the critical value for the material group, and the increase in heat input caused the decrease of hardness by about 25 HV10.

Opis:
This paper presents experimental testing of the mechanical characteristics and properties of samples made of high-strength low-alloy steel with two different multi pass V grove butt welded joint. Two sample groups are tested: the root pass is made by manual metal arc welding process for the former and metal inert gas welding process for the latter. Other passes of those multi passes welded joints are made by metal active gas welding process. Further, the research included analyses of the experimentally obtained mechanical properties and load response of the samples in correlations to microhardness distribution and microstructural state at specific zones of the welded joints. Since both the chemical composition and microstructural state of high-strength low-alloy steel originate from special production processes their nature must be fully understood. Accordingly, the nature of the steels should directly impact not only the selection and definition of welding but the design process of mechanical constructions, too. From the practical aspect, mechanical characteristics and properties as well as load response of welded joints are crucial. But, sensitivity of those steels to inadequate welding technology and improper parameters or filler metal is high. On the other side, design codes and recommendations are not yet fully developed and precise. Results obtained in this research implicate that even small changes of welding technology causes the change of characteristics itself. Consequently, the steels development must be accompanied with the improvement of the welding processes and design modifications.

Parent material as a delivered condition (quenched and tempered) had a bainitic-martensitic microstructure at hardness about 290 HV0.5. After welding, the microstructure of heat affected zone is composed mainly of martensite (in the vicinity of the fusion line) of hardness 420 HV0.5. It should be noted, however, that the microstructure of steel in the heat affected zone varies with the distance from the fusion line. The observed microstructural changes were in accordance with the CCT-S transformation diagram for the examined steel.

The compression test was also carried out without the use of breaking rings and then true strain was about 0.3. The split Hopkinson pressure bar test take only few milliseconds to complete during which time it is impossible to transfer the excess heat out of the specimen, therefore the test must be carried out in adiabatic conditions and so the increase of the temperature caused by the work of plastic deformation had to be calculated. The stepping load method was used in order to evaluate the effect of adiabatic heating on the properties of steel which allowed to maintain the isothermal deformation conditions. The paper presents the comparison of results obtained during deformation under adiabatic and isothermal conditions in correlation to structure changes occurring in course of dynamic compression.

The hardness distributions, tensile properties and fracture toughness were determined for the weld material and heat affect zone material for both types of the welded joints. Tests results shown on advantage the laser welded joints in comparison to the convention ones. Tensile properties and fracture toughness in all areas of the laser joints have a higher level than in the conventional one. The heat affect zone of the conventional welded joints is a weakness area, where the tensile properties are lower in comparison to the base material. Verification of the tensile tests, which carried out by using the Aramis video system, confirmed this assumption. The highest level of strains was observed in HAZ material and the destruction process occurred also in HAZ of the conventional welded joint.

In the present study, the investigation of weldability of ultra-high strength steel has been presented. The thermal simulated samples were used to investigate the effect of welding cooling time t8/5 on microstructure and mechanical properties of heat affected zone (HAZ) for a Weldox 1300 ultra-high strength steel. In the frame of these investigation the microstructure was studied by light and transmission electron microscopies. Mechanical properties of parent material were analysed by tensile, impact and hardness tests. In details the influence of cooling time in the range of 2,5 ÷ 300 sec. on hardness, impact toughness and microstructure of simulated HAZ was studied by using welding thermal simulation test. The microstructure of ultra-high strength steel is mainly composed of tempered martensite. The results show that the impact toughness and hardness decrease with increase of t8/5 under condition of a single thermal cycle in simulated HAZ. The increase of cooling time to 300 s causes that the microstructure consists of ferrite and bainite mixture. Lower hardness, for t8/5 ≥ 60 s indicated that low risk of cold cracking in HAZ for longer cooling time, exists.

This research paper shows the influence of a repeated SPD (Severe Plastic Deformation) plastic forming with the DRECE technique (Dual Rolls Equal Channel Extrusion) on hardening of low carbon IF steel. The influence of number of passes through the device on change of mechanical properties, such as tensile strength TS and yield stress YS, of tested steel was tested. The developed method is based on equal channel extrusion with dual rolls and uses a repeated plastic forming to refinement of structure and improve mechanical properties of metal bands [1-2]. For the tested steel the increase of strength properties after the DRECE process was confirmed after the first pass in relation to the initial material. The biggest strain hardening is observed after the fourth pass.
