Opis:
The paper is an attempt to reflect on whether hermeneutics can still be a cognitively fruitful approach in literary studies, especially in respect of contemporary output. The authoress analyses two currents in the literature, which could be named integrating and eristic. They seem to correspond with two paradigms in hermeneutics: affirmative, concentrating on “brightening an existence”, and radical, emphasizing “weakness”, “flux”, “collapsing” etc. A key issue is the doubt whether applying the name “hermeneutics” is not in itself misleading, as it concerns diametrically opposed points of view. The authoress proposes her own understanding of hermeneutics as a perspective of reading literature, which “cling on” to the protagonists’, author’s and interpreter’s experience. She also invokes the metaphors of scaffolding and house building, where the home is marked with an unrelenting “uneasiness” and lacks strong foundations, but does convey the situation of incessant common constructing the accidental and demanding protection of meaning.

The author of the article presents the concept of experience and experiencing in the field of Polonistic education. According to the scholar, Hans¬ Georg Gadamer’s philosophical her-meneutics can serve as an inspiring context in research and educational work of a teacher. Gadamer’s hermeneutics has been one of the influential ideas in philosophy and social sci-ences in recent years. The type of experience presented by the philosopher, that is more like a meeting, a talk than only a live stream, and whose task is to activate and rationalize what is primary in the process of common experiencing the world, can be used in school education in many ways.

Opis:
In the European literature and culture of the interwar period we can observe increased interest in the physicality and the process of dying. Novels which touch upon these subjects are described by some scholars and critics as “sanitarian literature”. The following text is discussing the issues of the works of Max Blecher; his novel “Scarred Hearts” can be included in the circle of mentioned “sanitarian literature”. Blecher’s novel presents certain strategies of dealing with a terminal illness and the finiteness of human existence, as well as the alientation associated with these. The most frequently cited interpretive trail in this case is the philosophy of Kierkegaard, Jaspers and Heidegger. In the first part of the article, I refer to Blecher’s biography and his reception, while in the next part I contrast selected excerpts from his novel with philosophical hermeneutics.

Opis:
In the interpretation of Revelation, as well as, documents of the Magisterium of the post-conciliar Catholic theology, strong tensions and differences have been exposed. They are a consequence of various hermeneutics. Each of the sides claims the right to define “a reform”.However, a careful and critical analysis of the three functioning types of hermeneutics (of absolute continuity, of a break, and of absolute fidelity to the tradition) is not fully satisfactory. In its external form of expression the symbols and dogmas of faith are historical, so with the flow of history they become anachronistic, despite the fact that the essence (the core) of the doctrine is not changed, because it comes from the Divine Revelation and is a subject of personal experience of the faithful. Therefore, a fundamental basis of faith lies in the event of Revelation, namely, the self-giving of the Triune God. Hence the Revelation must be understood not as a statement of truth, but as an event of truth. It is about personal experience of the Resurrected, and not just knowledge or information about Him. Therefore, the language and the manner of communication must be constantly verified and contemporized. While the truth is always not completely grasped. This is why the presented article is a small contribution in developing a fourth type of hermeneutics – a hermeneutics of substantial change, which though would allow to break the continuity at some points, nevertheless would not destroy the identity of faith.

Opis:
Gianni Vattimo, who is both a Catholic and a frequent critic of the Church, explores the surprising congruence between Christianity and hermeneutics in light of the dissolution of metaphysical truth. As in hermeneutics, Vatimo claims, interpretation is central to Christianity. Influenced by hermeneutics and borrowing largely from the Nietzschean and Heideggerian heritage, the Italian philosopher, who has been instrumental in promoting a nihilistic approach to Christianity, draws here on Nietzsche’s writings on nihilism, which is not to be understood in a purely negative sense. Vattimo suggests that nihilism not only expands the Christian message of charity, but also transforms it into its endless human potential. In “The Age of Interpretation,” the author shows that hermeneutical radicalism “reduces all reality to message,” so that the opposition between facts and norms turns out to be misguided, for both are governed by the interpretative paradigms through which someone (always a concrete, historically situated someone) makes sense of them. Vattimo rejects some of the deplorable political consequences of hermeneutics and claims that traditional hermeneutics is in collusion with various political-ideological neutralizations.

The thesis of this article is a conviction that narration as a research method can be stabilised methodologically by the means of making a reference to the whole process of bringing the hermeneutic tradition into existence. This will allow us, first of all, to defy criticism from the side of naturalistic trends; secondly – to emphasise a particular position of psychology in the opposition of humanities and science; and thirdly – to draw detailed procedures of the comprehension process. The aim of this article was to point out that narration cannot exist without the support of hermeneutics, even if it is defined under cognitive constructivism, because the methodological stabilisation of this psychological trend requires justification of the importance of people’s narration about their history as a text for interpretation. Thus, if a narrative story is treated as a text, then hermeneutics procedures can be applied.

Dialogue is a necessary way of inhabiting a shared world. However, the concept of dialogue at present has become ambiguous and often abused. The purpose of this article is to introduce order into this conceptual ambiguity. Ferdinand de Saussure distinguished language (langue) from speech (parole), and following him, Paul Ricoeur wrote about discourse of the event. Here different concepts of dialogue begin. Dialogue understood as the communication, in which the accent is located in the discourse, argumentation serving to elaborate a consensus of action taken and dialogue understood as a meeting of persons. Two first concepts of dialogue are found in Jürgen Habermas’ communication theory and in Ricoeur’s dialogue led in the form of ‘hospitality lent by language’. If the essence of communication theory of Habermas is a discourse, then the essence of Ricoeur’s ‘hospitality lent by language’ is an understanding of others. The essence of the third concept of dialogue, also called the meeting, developed by twentieth-century philosophy of dialogue, are presence and love. There is also a fourth form of dialogue introduced by Georg Simmel, constituting a priori foundations of social life. For him a function or a social role is the centre. However, we can also find the fifth form of dialogue in dialogical hermeneutics of Hans Georg Gadamer, trying to combine the discursive and personal dimensions. For him the centre is both the presence of other, as well as the truth happening in dialogue. All these conceptions of dialogue have important significance for pedagogy.

In this article, I am examining the role of categorization in understanding. The problem arises from well-known distinction between explanation and understanding, which has been for a century pursued in hermeneutic tradition. Categorization belongs to explanatory endeavor and its role in understanding is unclear. In order to delimit the scope of inquiry I am focusing on the weakest kind of categorization, so called categorization ad hoc. I am examining the hypothesis to the effect that categorization plays its role in hermeneutic circle as some sort of pre-understanding. Eventually, however, I reject this hypothesis. It is because it leads to hermeneutic paradox: The notion of pre-understanding has a meaning only in the context of full-fledged understanding, which is an unattainable ideal. Such ideal cannot be used as a personal criterion of the quality of one’s understanding. There is a tension between the feeling of understanding and the scarcity of personal means to justify this feeling. I am suggesting that similar, albeit weaker effect occurs also in more elaborate, scientific categorizations. What is really wrong in the passage from categorization to understanding is some form of self-understanding: We do not know whether we understand better, or at all when we put some categorical order onto our experience. We do not seem to have the required meta-understanding.

The focus of my reflections on hermeneutics and the humanities is the short story or comic tale by Anton Chekhov entitled “The Siren” (1887) where we encounter two irreconcilable conceptions of representation; the story contains within it a philosophical aporia, but makes no attempt one way or another to resolve it. I believe that the non-metaphysical “adhesion” of this aporia is precisely its humour. Is such a humorous hermeneutics of uncertainty (of oneself) or such a comic approach to what we call the humanities, which is not sceptical because it to a certain extent a priori affirms the world as well as one’s own imperfection, at all possible? If I understand Chekhov correctly, then he confronts us with the problem of the uinavoidability of precisely this “impossible” creation of the humanities.

Epistolary writing has been known for ages and has won a significant position in the history of literature. One of the most intriguing exchanges of letters known from the 20th century started nine days before the wedding of the renowned artist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz with an aristocrat Jadwiga von Urunh. The first letter is dated to the 21st of March 1923 and the last on the 24th of August 1939. The letters of Witkacy to his wife have been for many years surrounded by a veil of mystery. They can be read as a history of a certain relationship, a study of loneliness, a historical and social life chronicle or as a comment on artistic activity. The set comprises 1278 letters, postcards and wires. In this edition it is divided into two equal parts of which the first one includes the letters, while the second presents the commenting notes written by Professor Janusz Degler. The editors divided the whole set into four parts of which three volumes of Witkacy’s letters to his wife from the years 1923–1927, 1928–1931, 1932–1935 have already been published. Unfortunately, none of the letters written by Jadwiga to her husband has been found, so we know the correspondence exclusively from the side of a daily writer Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz.
