Opis:
In the article I present “today-here” as a time and place without proper names, but full of traces and vectors leading in different directions, in an undefined direction in sum. Contemporary philosophy, extremely diverse and aware of its finitude, in its own way expresses and even intensifies such an experience of the present. I argue that the position of philosophy is not good, but it is not bad either, and that indeterminacy itself has a positive effect on philosophical thinking. I show the multitude of “objects” that can be related to philosophy and the paths it can follow, for instance reflecting on social and political phenomena or on problems related to the sciences. Noting little public interest in philosophy today, I defend, nevertheless, the role it can play in contemporary society.

Alice BalestrinoSapienza University of Rome Placing Time, Timing Space. Memory as Border and Line of (Hi)Stories in Richard McGuire’s Graphic Narrative Here.  This article interrogates the Cartesian understanding of time and space in narratives grounded in memorial endeavors. It focuses on the lines that define the interconnectedness between these two dimensions in relation to the introduction of the phenomenological category of memory as a third element providing a perspective on reality and blurring the borders between present and past; here and there. This composite, operative category is tested in the analysis of Richard McGuire’s graphic narrative Here (2014) that, both on the level of the format and on that of the story, outlines the porosity and the ultimate disappearance of the spatiotemporal borders by means of memories. This work conceives of a historical simultaneity that soaks a particular space in its past and of the margins of contingency that separate what pertains to History, what to individual stories and what gets forgotten instead – a representation which is studied against the background of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s speculations on memory in A Thousand Plateaus. Keywords: Spacetime as a narrative category, Richard McGuire, Here, The American border

Opis:
This article places Graham Swift’s latest novel Here We Are (2020) in the context of his previous writing and argues that much of his fiction is underpinned by the characters’ desire to transcend the limitations of their ordinary lives and to seek solace or a temporary escape within the realm of illusion. The analysis aims to demonstrate that the opposition between the two realms is the central preoccupation in Here We Are. The wish to surmount the mundane is fulfilled quite literally through the protagonist’s dedication to the practice of magic. The meaning of magic as a craft is briefly discussed, especially its quasi-religious connotations. It is also suggested that magic may be a tentative, personal answer to the problem of the “disenchantment” of the world, as diagnosed by Max Weber a hundred years ago. In Swift’s novel, far from being only a set of professional skills, magic creates an illusory realm, alternative to and more appealing than daily life.

Opis:
This article reflects on Samuel Beckett’s A Piece of Monologue (1979) and Caryl Churchill’s Here We Go (2015) as plays that engage with the theme of “the dying and the going”. Both playwrights are internationally renowned for their theatrical innovation, hence this article investigates how their plays explore the propensity of old age to transgress the limitations of theatrical representation and to induce heightened awareness of the audience. Beckett’s play resembles an extended poetic image whose minimalism parallels the diminishing powers customarily associated with ageing. Yet Beckett’s minimalism redirects the focus on what almost perishes, ceases to be, and affirms Speaker’s urge to tell a story and to persist with “the one matter.” As such, the limited resources of old age are not considered as a hindrance to addressing the mystery of human existence and instead become empowered by the artistic arrangement of the text. Caryl Churchill’s Here We Go resembles a triptych and its three parts employ first dialogue, then monologue, and finally resort to silence to address our mortality. The play’s brevity and the diversity of applied aesthetic and structural solutions are matched with a script that gives the director and actors ample scope for artistic freedom and creativity. Therefore in their investigation into old age and death both playwrights escape the demands of chronology and teleological narratives and employ daring and imaginative techniques to challenge the medium they work in and to confound the conventional expectations of the theatre audience.

Tadeusz Kantor’s Theatre Academy in Hucisko
„Do not come back here anymore ...”
Opis:
„I won ’t come back here anymore ...” – the concept of Tadeusz Kanor ’s „return ” to his home in Hucisko (municipality Gdów)In the nineties of the twentieth century, Tadeusz Kantor built a house in Hucisko, a small town located in the municipality of Gdów. The design of the artist’s office definitely served a practical aesthetic. It is therefore not surprising that the rhythm of the windows is determined by the functional layout. The artist distributed them so that they could encompass the widest possible view. „Kantorówka” is very modest and intimate, but not without fancy elements. It was built in three months by a highland carpenter. In „Kantorówka” one finds the workshops of Tadeusz Kantor and his wife – Mary Stangret. Today the house is empty. Maria Stangret comes here but rarely. Also, „Cricoteka” no longer organizes activities and trips to the village near Cracow. Yet the manor house in Hucisko is the home of the artist’s „soul” and is ideal for conducting creative workshops and the development of artistic imagination. Kantor wanted his home in Hucisko to become a place for meetings, conferences, exhibitions and educational activities aimed at the local population. He tried to create a meeting place for people of different views, to discuss the art and science, and thus encourage and educate the public. However, his death meant that this vision was never fully realized. Kantor’s house is deserted, and the title of one of his recent dramas „I’ve been here not to come back” takes on an added significance... The Foundation „Given a Chance”, whose statutory aims are based on educational and cultural activities, has proposed to create a summer Theatre Academy in the home of Tadeusz Kantor in Hucisko. The Academy would organize a wide variety of different classes devoted to drama activities, painting and photography workshops, as well as literary – journalistic activities. At the end of each cycle, the Academy would organize a conference and a series of exhibitions of works by people who participated in the workshops. It is proposed that classes should be available to foreigners, so that the work of Tadeusz Kantor could return to his home in Hucisko. This paper also proposes that the above projects should be financed from the European Union funds available for the years 2007–2013.

Opis:
Teksty poezji liturgicznej są ważnymi czynnikami w tworzeniu dzieł sztuki muzycznej na przestrzeni wieków europejskiej historii muzyki. Niniejszy artykuł omawia zagadnienie teologii poezji liturgicznej w przestrzeni sztuki. Recepcja określonego dzieła liturgicznego w sztuce muzycznej powoduje odpowiednie odczytanie jego treści w świetle konkretnego chrześcijańskiego paradygmatu teologicznego. Nikołaj Andriejewicz Rimski-Korsakow we współpracy z librecistą Władimirem Belskim w operze-legendzie Legenda o niewidzialnym grodzie Kiteziu i dziewicy Fiewronii wykorzystał aluzje tekstowe cerkiewnego śpiewu Oto Oblubieniec nadchodzi. Zapożyczenie śpiewu cerkiewnego z okresu Wielkiego Postu wyraża w finale opery teologiczne idee Drugiego Przyjścia Jezusa Chrystusa (paruzji), a także przedstawia obraz błogości raju życia wiecznego w Królestwie Niebieskim.
The texts of liturgical poetry are important factors in the formation of works of musical art over the centuries of European music history. This article discusses the theology of liturgical poetry in the space of musical art. The reception of a particular liturgical work in the canvas of musical art creates a corresponding reading of its content in the light of the relevant Christian theological paradigm. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in collaboration with librettist Vladimir Belsky in the opera-legend The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya used the textual allusions of the Ortodox church singing Here’s the Groom going. The use of church singing from Lent expresses in the finale of the opera the theological ideas of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and also presents a picture of the bliss of paradise being in the Kingdom of Heaven.

One of the successful tools used in creative contemporary advertising is the intentional modification of texts taken from popular literature (Gajewska 2011, also Bralczyk 2004). This paper offers a conceptual blending analysis of an advertisement for Ranigast®, a medicine used in the treatment of dyspepsia, which relies on a paraphrased  fragment of The Sick Kitten, a famous Polish poem for children written by Stanisław Jachowicz. The linguistic analysis of the proposed advertisement will be carried out in the light of conceptual blending theory, in particular with the aid of Line Brandt and Per Aage Brandt’s model of conceptual integration (Brandt and Brandt 2005) Assuming that each advertisement is, to some extent, an interplay between the speaker and the hearer, a particular emphasis is going to be laid upon the complexity of the so-called Semiotic Base Space which serves as a “prerequisite for meaning construction” in the analyzed ad (Brandt and Brandt 2005: 225). For further elaboration of the Semiotic Base Space, which I consider of vital importance for an analyzed instance, Ronald Langacker’s notion of Current Discourse Space (Langacker 1999, 2001) as well as Esther Pascual’s notions of the Verbal Space and Here-and-Now Space (Pascual 2009) will also be taken into account.
