Opis:
Estimation and application of water retention curves in heavy soils have own specifics. The reason for these specific properties is the composition of the high clay texture. This is manifested by volume changes of soil depending on moisture. Up to 40% change in the volume compared to the saturated state was recorded in the conditions of the East Slovakian Lowland. The results described in this work are based on research work carried out in the East Slovakian Lowland and represent an analysis of selected 42 samples out of a total of 250 samples in which laboratory measurements of soil water retention curves and volume changes were performed. Selected samples represent the localities Senné and Poľany. Volumetric changes were measured in a laboratory by measuring the dimensions of soil samples. Appropriate changes in the volume of soil samples should be measured when determining moisture retention curves. Neglecting this physical effect leads to a distorted determination of the water retention curves in heavy soils. In the laboratory measurement of water retention curves points, changes in the volume of the sample were measured in the range of 0.24–43.67% depending on the soil moisture potential during drainage. In the case of neglecting the effect of shrinkage during the drainage of samples, a certain error is occurring in the calculation of the volumetric moisture. The range of this error was 1–13% of volumetric moisture.

Badaniami objęto teren i roślinność łąkową doliny rzeki Ina w pobliżu miejscowości Sowno. Warunki geomorfologiczne i hydrologiczne, a także cechy morfologiczne występujących tam gleb (mady próchniczne, mady brunatne i gleby torfowo-murszowe) omówiono w pierwszej części opracowania. Badania wykazały, że gleby doliny Iny, mimo różnej przynależności typologicznej, miały odczyn od kwaśnego do lekko kwaśnego oraz dużą pojemność sorpcyjną. Stopień wysycenia gleb kationami zasadowymi w badanych madach był korzystniejszy niż w glebach torfowo-murszowych. Powierzchniowe poziomy mad zawierały znaczne ilości węgla organicznego (mady próchniczne średnio 35,4, a brunatne - 30,9 g.kg-1), stosunek C:N był w nich korzystny i wynosił średnio 10,3:1,0.
The area and grassland vegetation of the Ina River valley near Sowno were studied. Geomorphologic and hydrological conditions as well as morphological features of the soils (humic and brown alluvial soils, peat-muck soils) were discussed in Part I of the paper. The studies showed that despite different typology, the soils of the Ina River valley were characterised by acid to slightly acid reaction and a high sorption capacity. However, the alkaline cation saturation was more favourable in studied alluvial soils than in peat-muck soil. Surface layers of alluvial soils contained considerable amounts of organic carbon (on average 35.4 and 30.9 g.kg-1 in humic and brown soil, respectively) and favourable mean C:N ratio of 10.3:1, whereas in the muck layer of organic soils this ratio fluctuated being 14.9:1 on average. Available resources of potassium and phosphorus were low or very low but soils had favourable content of available magnesium, which was confirmed by the chemical composition of grassland sward. The sward, especially on alluvial soil, was deficient in potassium, calcium and sodium. Only magnesium content was within the recommended amounts.

Badano plonowanie oraz cechy struktury plonu pszenicy, pszenżyta oraz żyta mieszańcowego i populacyjnego. W doświadczeniu brały udział odmiany wzorcowe COBORU: pszenicy ozimej — Tonacja, pszenżyta ozimego — Moderato oraz żyta populacyjnego — Dańkowskie Diament i mieszańcowego — Balistic. Odmiana pszenżyta Moderato posiadała największą liczbę ziaren w kłosie, a odmiana pszenicy Tonacja osiągnęła najwyższą masę 1000 ziaren.
In the paper, yielding and yield components of winter wheat, triticale, open-pollinated rye and hybrid rye are presented. The investigations were carried out on four standard cultivars from the Research Centre for Cultivar testing (COBORU): winter wheat — cv. Tonacja, winter triticale — cv. Moderato, open-pollinated rye — cv. Dańkowskie Diament, and hybrid rye — cv. Balistic. The studies were conducted on medium-heavy soils (valuation class: 4a–4b) at three localizations in Poland. The same cultivation technology was applied for all the cultivars. Significant differences in yielding between the tested cultivars were found. The interaction between yield and localization appeared to be positive. Significant regression relation between yield and environment was shown but also the deviations from regression were also found to be significant. The highest main yield in both years of the study was obtained with cv. Balistic. The open-pollinated rye cv. Dańkowskie Diament yielded evidently lower in the first study year, and winter wheat cv. Tonacja in both years. The cultivar Balistic was characterized by the highest number of ears per unit area, cv. Moderato produced the greatest number of grains per ear, and cv. Tonacja achieved the highest weight of 1000 grains.

Opis:
The present research was carried out with the main aim to evaluate the levels of heavy metals in some contaminated or expected to be contaminated by industrial effluents and some non contaminated soils of district Swabi. A total of 30 soil samples were collected from 15 different selected soil series of Swabi area at 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm depths and analyzed for various chemical properties using standard analytical techniques and for extractable heavy metals Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Co, Ni, Cd and Pb using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. All soil samples were found non saline having EC values between 0.13-0.56 dsm-1. Soil reaction or pH value ranged from 7.21-8.60 except Mansabdar soil which had pH value of 9.21. It was found that swabi soil was moderately to strongly calcareous in nature, alkaline in reaction having deficient to marginal in organic matter content. Furthermore all soil samples were found almost adequate in Fe, Cu and Zn for most of agriculture crops. The higher concentrations of Ni (22.21 and 21.9 mg kg-1) and Cr (8.02 and 5.11 mg kg-1) at both surface and sub surface were recorded in Gadoom Amazai soils located near ghee mills and many other industries. Higher levels of heavy metals were observed in contaminated soils as compared with non contaminated soils. Decreased in concentration levels of metals were observed in majority of soils with increase in depth. No correlation was found between AB-DTPA extractable heavy metals and soil chemical properties and it might be due to samples collected from different locations with different thermodynamic characteristics.

Opis:
The sewage treatment facility of a paper mill at Konstancin-Jeziorna was opened to process industrial and domestic wastewater. After closure of that mill, the sewage treatment facility had to be rebuilt and modernized. Therefore, it was necessary to analyse the chemical and phase composition of the sediments from facultative lagoons used for biological treatment of wastewater. Eight samples of sediments were taken to identify a general phase composition by X-ray diffraction and ten to determine concentrations of selected main and trace elements with the use of ICP-AES and AMA methods. The analyses showed that the sediments consisted of over 90% of mineral fraction, mainly kaolinite, calcite, and quartz and also neomorphic smithsonite. They contained low quantities of Hg, Cd, Co and Mo, and elevated concentrations of Zn, Ba, Mn and Sr. Comparisons of the obtained mean values with admissible concentrations of metals, as defined by Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 9 September 2002, showed that the mean concentrations of As, Sn, Co, Mo and Ni (and also of Hg and Cr in the southern lagoon) met quality standards for soils in areas under protection (group A). Mean concentrations of Pb (both lagoons), Ba, Cu, Cd (northern lagoon) as well as Cr and Hg (southern lagoon) in sediments are higher. However, they still meet standards for areas usable for agricultural and other purposes (group B). The highest concentrations were recorded for Zn, Cd, Cu and Ba in samples from the southern lagoon. These continued to be lower than all the limits acceptable for industrial areas.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to determine the total content of cadmium, lead, nickel, copper, zinc and their fractions in organic soils of Podlasie used as permanent grassland. The research material were samples taken from 30 soils of the Podlasie province in 2011-2013. The samples were taken from the determined layer to depth of 0-30 cm. Basic physicochemical properties were determined in the taken soil samples: organic carbon content, pH in 1 M KCl potentiometrically. The total content of metals after mineralization in aqua regia was determined, and cadmium fractions were determined with a modified BCR method. The measurements were conducted by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy with electrothermal atomization using Varian AA-100 spectrometer. It was found that only 2 soils can be included in the soils with first pollution degree due to the cadmium content. The content of other metals was at geochemical background level. The distribution of investigated metals in the fractions in studied organic soils was different comparing to mineral soils. Most of the analyzed elements were present in the fraction associated with organic substance, which limited their mobility, as evidenced by their low share in the available and potentially available fraction. The proportion of metals in the residual fraction was low, which is typical for organic soils. The share of studied metals in particular fractions varied depending on the sampling date, which may be related to the climatic conditions course in the study period and the treatments performed on these soils.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine soils pollution by heavy metals (Zn, Cu and Cr) and their content in pine needles taken from terrain of Krakow Agglomeration. It was found large changeability of individual trace metals content in analyzed plants and soils material. The metals content in soils amounted to: 12.64–631.9 mg Zn, 1.24–35.06 mg Cu and 2.39–158.9 mg Cr kg–1 dm. The average content of zinc, copper and chromium in soil samples from the city of Krakow terrain was visibly higher than in the analogous material taken from neighboring localities. Variation coefficients of individual trace elements content were: 102.8 % for Cr, 72 % for Zn and 54.2 % for Cu. The highest amounts of analyzed heavy metals was found in soils from places of Krakow Agglomeration located in zones of large intensity of road traffics and in Old Town where the influence of anthropopressure lasts the longest. High their contents were observed also in soil samples taken from the periphery of Krakow and in localities with dense one-family buildings situated along the main traffic routes. The relatively low content of these metals in soils were observed in multifamily dwelling housing estates and in smaller villages from the periphery of the Agglomeration. On average, the most pollution of studied soils with Cu and Zn was found in the eastern part of the Agglomeration, while the lowest in western one. The highest average Cr content was observed in the soil samples taken from northern part of the Krakow Agglomeration while the lowest in southern part. Contents of zinc and copper in soil were significant positively correlated with organic matter content in soil. The average contents of analyzed trace metals in pine needles taken from the city of Krakow terrain and from neighboring localities were differed slightly. The average content of these metals in pine needles from the Agglomeration terrain amounted to: 55.45 mg Zn, 4.76 mg Cu and 2.54 mg Cr kg–1 d.m. Individual metals content in plant was differentiated in diverse extent. The largest variation was found in case of Cr (V = 40 %), lower for Zn (V = 30.8 %), and the lowest in case of Cu (26.4 %). The highest average analyzed heavy metals content was found in needles of pine grown in southern part of the Krakow Agglomeration. The smallest Cu and Cr contents were observed in needles taken from the trees grown in northern part of the city and neighboring localities, while the smallest Zn content was noted in samples from the northern part of the Krakow Agglomeration. Obtained results did not prove a substantial correlation between heavy metals content in soil and in pine needles, what points at origin of Zn, Cu and Cr from deposition from the atmosphere. The bioaccumulation coefficients of analyzed elements had higher values in case of samples taken from countryside than those taken from city Krakow terrain.
Stwierdzono duże zróżnicowanie zawartooeci poszczególnych metali oeladowych w analizowanym materiale glebowym i rooelinnym. Gleby zawierały: 12,64–631,88 mg Zn, 1,24–38 mg Cu oraz 2,39–158,9 mg Cr kg–1 s.m. OErednie zawartooeci cynku, miedzi i chromu w próbkach glebowych z terenu miasta Krakowa były wyższe niż w analogicznym materiale pobranym z okolicznych miejscowooeci. Średnio największe zanieczyszczenie badanych gleb Zn i Cu stwierdzono we wschodniej częoeci aglomeracji, a najmniejsze w częoeci zachodniej. Największą średnią zawartością Cr odznaczały się gleby z północnej, a najmniejszą z południowej częoeci aglomeracji krakowskiej. Zawartość cynku i miedzi w glebie były istotnie dodatnio skorelowane z zawartością materii organicznej. Przeciętna zawartość tych metali w igliwiu sosen rosnących na terenie aglomeracji wyniosła: 55,45 mg Zn, 4,76 mg Cu i 2,54 mg Cr kg–1 s.m. Zawartości poszczególnych metali ciężkich były zróżnicowane w niejednakowym stopniu. Największą zmienność stwierdzono w przypadku Cr (V = 40 %), następnie Zn (V = 30,8 %), a najmniejszą w przypadku Cu (26,4 %). Średnio najwięcej wszystkich analizowanych metali stwierdzono w szpilkach sosen rosnących w południowej części aglomeracji krakowskiej. Najmniej Cu i Cr zawierały igły pobrane z drzew z północnej części miasta oraz z graniczących z nią miejscowości, natomiast najmniejszą zawartość Zn zanotowano w próbkach pobranych w północnej części aglomeracji.

Opis:
The exposure of heavy metals in the Drenas site – Kosovo has risen dramatically in the last 30 years because of mining and smelting activities. The study investigated the heavy metal in soil, accumulation in different parts of apple trees near the industrial sites of Drenas. The accumulation ratio values of heavy metals were calculated to assess the potential health risks. The mean concentrations of the heavy metals in the soil were in the following order of magnitude Ni > Zn > Fe > Cr > Cu > Pb > Cd > As, while that in the apples were in the order of magnitude Ni > Cr > Fe > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd > As, in the leaves – Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As and in the shoots – Zn > Fe > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As. Compared to control, the contents of analyzed metals from plant tissues of apple trees in the contaminated area were significantly higher (p<0.001). The concentration of Ni, Pb, Cr, Fe etc. in the apple tissue increased along with the heavy metal content in soils in the polluted area. The high accumulation ratio values for Pb (1.1), Cd (0.62), Cr (0.93) and Ni (0.46) were characteristic for the investigated species and indicate the accumulation ability.

Opis:
The studies were conducted in the years 2012–2014 on agricultural areas affected by the gas and dust emissions of the Copper Smelter “Głogów”. The content of five trace elements – copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadium (Cd), arsenic (As) – was determined in soil samples collected on the borders of the protection zone of the smelter by means of the AAS method. Additionally, the collected samples were used to determine the pH of the analysed soil. The studies showed that the contents of the analysed trace elements in the soil depended on the location of the soil in relation to the sources of the emission of the pollution and were the result of a strong concentration of these elements in a period of intensified emission from the plant. The element which caused the greatest soil pollution was copper. A strong variation in pH values was observed in the analysed soils (ranging from acid to alkaline reactions). The pH of most of the soils was ≥5.6. The conducted studies formed the basis for determining the initial isoline of the areas which exceeded the legal standards for soil quality in the discussed area. These studies are an integral complement to existing work on the evaluation of the local variability of soil pollution with heavy metals and arsenic in an area affected by smelter emissions.

Opis:
This article presents the results of field research, as well as the results of the use of remote-sensing data in the geochemical study of the soil cover of the Yertis River basin. In the work, the content of the gross form of heavy metals in the soil of the river basin was investigated. The atomic absorption method determined the content of the Poor configuration of elements of elements in soils. Statistical processing of the obtained data from N. A. Plokhinsky was carried out using the Statistica program. Also, using the performed indices in the remote sensing of clay minerals, iron oxides, and carbonates, the spatial distribution and comparison of pollutants in the soil cover of the river basin were revealed. The methods and means of image processing tested in this study can be used to create maps of the distribution of pollutants. Also, the data obtained reflect the patterns of distribution of heavy metals in the soils of the basin and can be used to optimize landscapes and improve the organization of ecological and geochemical monitoring.

Taraxacum officinale agg.
Opis:
Common dandelion Taraxacum officinale agg. (T. officinale F.H. Wigg) is a plant species commonly found on urban areas. It is characterised by low habitat requirements and proven bioindication properties. The aim of this study was to assess the possibility of using T. officinale agg. for monitoring of the urban soils in the City of Kielce with regard to selected heavy metal concentrations, i.e. Pb, Cu and Zn. Twenty-one soil and dandelion samples (roots and leaves) were collected from the area of Kielce. The study areas were designated with regard to land-use types, i.e. industrial areas, urban parks and forests, urban green areas, and urban allotment gardens. The total heavy metal concentrations were determined in the soil and plant material by the ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy) method, after mineralisation of the samples in a mixture of HCl-HNO3 (3:1). Moreover, the soil samples were analysed in terms of pH values. The concentrations of heavy metals in the analysed soils were oscillating at: 16.5-290 mg/kg d.m. for Pb; 7.11- 41mg/kg d.m. for Cu; 55.7-338 mg/kg d.m. for Zn In the case of dandelion leaves, the concentration range was recorded at: 1.07-3.11 mg/kg d.m. for Pb; 3.11-14.1 mg/kg d.m. for Cu; 19.7-121 mg/kg d.m. for Zn. Regarding the dandelion roots, the concentration range was as follows: 0.54-2.09 mg/kg d.m. for Pb; 2.89-8.11 mg/kg d.m. for Cu; 15.8-67.1 mg/kg d.m. for Zn. The study indicated that the concentrations of analysed heavy metals adopted the sequence of soil>leaves>root. The above relationship may indicate a significant impact of heavy metals contained in the air on their concentrations in the upper parts of plants. The pH of analysed soils were oscillating at 3.99-7.92 and was not correlated with the concentrations of heavy metals in the soils. Heavy metal concentrations were not significantly affected by the land-use types, which may indicate that urban pollution emission zones are not limited only to industrial and transportation areas.
