Opis:
Toxic pollutants of industrial origin can be dangerous for professionals who come into contact with them at work, and also for the people who live near the sources of environmental hazards. There is a known relationship between the soil pollution with heavy metals and the morbidity of the population. This paper reports a study of the soil pollution with ions of heavy metals in the Turkestan region, Kazakhstan. The study found technogenic geochemical anomalies of various size, intensity and origin in the soils of the Turkestan region. The distribution of lead, copper, barium, zinc, molybdenum, phosphorus and arsenic was mapped based on the ecological and geochemical survey of the upper soil layer. The most polluted city is Kentau, where concentrations of Pb, Mo, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Mn, Cr, Ni in the soil exceed the allowable level. The cause of pollution is erosion that occurs in the areas of technogenic waste storage. In some communities, the concentration of only one metal exceeded its MAC or the Clarke number, for example, only scandium exceeded its Clarke number by 1.1 in Lenger and only exceeded its Clarke number by 2.75 in Sholakkorgan.

Opis:
This paper focused on the fate of pollution and management of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) and heavy metals in the Zarqa River Basin in Jordan. The Zarqa River basin was selected in this research because it contains the majority of Jordanian industries, which are the main source of pollutants including Cr(VI) and heavy metals. This will help in assisting water resource management organizations in decision making when coping with pollution. Industries related to sources and impacts of Cr(VI) and heavy metals were identified, and the administration measures were highlighted according to their role in improving water quality. An analysis of water samples along the Zarqa River was conducted between 2016-2019 to evaluate the heavy metals concentrations and compare the results with the Jordanian standards. Findings showed that Cr(VI) was below the allowable limits (<5 μg/l), and the heavy metals were within the allowed limits set forth in the Jordanian Standard. The ranges of water analysis values (μg/L) were; DO 4640–6480, Fe <40–80, Mn 20–128, Co <20–30, Pb 80–190, Zn 70–100, and Cu <80–190, Al 700–730, V <70–100, B <300–351, Si 1100–1800, Ni 30, and Cd <10. These findings indicated that the quality of the Zarqa River would not cause hazardous effects. However, this was not the case few years ago due the current protection measures. At present some industries have been relocated from the Zarqa Basin to an area that does not pose any environmental hazards, while the rest of industries remained in the basin, but they have established an on-site treatment plant for industrial waste under the control of Jordanian government, and the enforcement of the environmental protection law. These measures must be monitored and updated by decision makers in a sustainable manner to prevent any water pollution.

The aim of this study was to examine Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) xylem changes caused by heavy metal pollution. Annual rings width, number of tracheids in radial rows and the length of tracheids in the wood from trees growing on post‑flotation tailings have been measured. Dimensions of tracheids have been examined separately for earlyand latewood of each radial increment. The most demonstrable changes are observed in the tracheids length, which appears to be shorter in the xylem from the industrial area than in the control samples. In the wood from the polluted site, the variability of length of tracheids is increased. Microscopic observations revealed numerous deformations in the xylem tissue and deviations from the standard cell arrangement. Circumferential deformations occurring in the wood structure may indicate the increasing spring frost vulnerability of these trees.

Opis:
The Dombivli city near Mumbai has rapid industrialized. However the improper environmental planning has resulted in discharge of industrial waste effluents from the industrial belt into the Ulhas River. These wastes from these industries include various toxic heavy metals which subsequently accumulate in the sediments of Ulhas River. This day by day increasing tremendous pollution load has provoked us to carry the systematic and detailed study of heavy metal content in the sediment samples collected along the Ulhas River along the Dombivli City, near Mumbai. The study was conducted in year 2012 and 2013. The study was carried out in along the banks of Ulhas River near the discharge of effluents from Dombivli Industrial belt Phase I and Phase II. Accordingly the sampling points were identified. The analysis for the majority of the toxic heavy metals like Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Arsenic (As) and Zinc (Zn), in sediment samples was done. From the results of our study, it can be concluded that there is a need of systematic and regular monitoring of pollution level along the Ulhas River so as to generate the data on accumulation of heavy metals in the river sediments which will further help in improving the industrial waste treatment technology adopted along the Dombivali industrial belt. It is expected that such scientific studies will help to gauge the extent of pollution in order to avoid long term irreparable damage to the ecosystem.

Opis:
Soil contamination of areas covered by industrial plants and farms is one of the major environmental problems whose weight is underestimated in Poland and Europe. Such regions are usually not as exposed to direct pollution as highly urbanized industrial areas. On the other hand, they are usually less strictly monitored than protected areas. The District of Olkusz, an example of such a region, is characterized by well-developed agriculture, regressing local industry and growing tourism industry. However, it borders with Silesia, a heavily industrized area. The study reports the condition of arable soils in Olkusz District in terms of their contamination with lead, cadmium, zinc and copper. The atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) method was used to determine the concentrations of the metallic elements. The parameters like pH, content of the clay fraction and content of organic matter have been also taken in consideration to assess the bioavailability of the metals. The analytical results showed that, despite the decreasing impact of the local industry, levels of concentration of all the studied metals are significantly higher than their average concentration in Polish soils. Moreover, all the calculated Pearson correlation coefficients between concentrations of the metals were above 0.9, which means they correlate each other strongly. The impact of the local pollutants (mainly Bukowno smelter) in connection with the proximity of the Silesia and the high vulnerability for contamination of the soils precludes agricultural use of the ground in at least half of the cases.

The paper deals with monitoring of pollution arising due to textile based industries located along the Dombivali industrial belt of Mumbai, India. The study was carried for the period of one year from June, 2012 to May, 2013 to study the level of toxic heavy metals and the physico-chemical properties of waste water effluents discharged from the above industries. The concentration level of majority of toxic heavy metals like Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were reported to be maximum of 45.58, 2.00, 2.06 and 9.20 ppm respectively in the month of April, while Cr and Fe concentration levels were found to be 2.50 and 55.30 ppm in the month of March. The effluent samples collected in the month of July was reported to show high BOD content of 564 ppm, while COD content was maximum of 2436 ppm in the month of October. The effluent samples collected in the month of January was having very low DO content of 3.21 ppm and high cyanide content of 0.09 ppm. The alkalinity, hardness and chloride content were maximum of 2158, 198 and 2765 ppm respectively in the effluent samples collected in the month of February. The effluents were having high total solid content of 8269 ppm during the month of April, while the salinity and phosphate contents were reported high of 5.64 and 125.70 ppm during the month of May. It was observed that the concentration level of majority of toxic heavy metals and the values of various physico-chemical parameters were above the tolerable limit set for inland surface water. The present experimental data on environmental risk assessment studies due to textile industries may be regarded as an aid towards a better understanding of the problem arising due to such industries. There is a need to convey the message that prevention of adverse health effects and promotion of health are profitable investments for employers and employees as a support to a sustainable development of economics.

Opis:
Contamination of surface soil horizons with heavy metals is usually related to long-lasting air pollution and might potentially affect soil fauna, as well as plant growth, harvesting and health of plant consumer. In order to estimate potential health risk, we investigated surface and subsurface soil contamination with heavy metals in avable area in one of the most industrialized region of western Ukraine, western Podole Upland. In total 80 samples from the area of about 35 km2 were sampled and analyzed for content of zinc, nickel, copper, cobalt, lead, arsenic and quicksilver. The research revealed several anomalies, where the content of these elements exceed 3-5 Ukrainian quality guidance for avable soils. Soils are the most contaminated with arsenic and quicksilver, with maximum concentrations exceeding local geochemical background about 20 times. Maximum nickel and zinc concentrations are about 10 times higher than the background while the content of copper and cobalt is elevated up to several times.
Stężenie niklu i cynku wynosi maksymalnie około 10 razy więcej, niż przewiduje norma, podczas gdy zawartość miedzi i kobaltu jest podwyższona kilkukrotnie.

Zjawisko to należy monitorować i kontrolować, aby zapobiec nieodwracalnym zmianom w ekosystemie.
People have changed their environment since the beginning of the civilization - it is an inevitable process. However, this phenomenon is accompanied by emission of many harmful chemicals to the environment, and recently there has been an increase in the amount of pollution. Having regard to the increase in environmental contamination with heavy metals due to the expanding industry and its impact on soil microorganisms, this study attempted to determine the effect of the selected heavy metals: cadmium, copper, lead and zinc, on the growth of actinobacteria (belonging to the genus Streptomyces) isolated from soils of ArcelorMittal steelworks in Cracow. Five soil samples were selected for the analysis, from which 2 isolates of Streptomyces spp. were selected for further analyses. The number of Streptomyces spp. in the soil samples was determined using the serial dilutions method. The systematic affiliation of microorganisms was confirmed by macroscopic as well as microscopic observations of Gram-stained smears, catalase reaction test and the sequencing of 16S rDNA region. Additionally, soil physical and chemical properties were examined - pH, moisture and heavy metal content - using atomic spectrometry. The heavy metal resistance of the examined Streptomyces spp. strains was analyzed using a well method with increasing concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc. After the incubation results were recorded as the growth inhibition zones (diameters) and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the heavy metals were determined. The conducted analyses revealed that heavy metal concentrations in two out of five examined soils exceeded the admissible values given by the Regulation of the Minister of Environment on soil quality standards. The number of actinobacteria in soils was varied (from 6700 to almost 250 thousand CFU per gram of soil dry weight). There was a negative correlation between the heavy metal concentrations in soils and the number of the studied microorganisms. The analyzed soils were alkaline - the lowest pH value was 7.7. Regarding the heavy metal resistance of the analyzed Streptomyces spp. strains, diverse in vitro susceptibility was recorded. The bacterial reactions differed even between strains isolated from the same soil samples. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of the examined heavy metals were as follows: Cd and Cu - 100 μg • cm−3, Zn - 3000 μg • cm−3 and Pb - 8000 μg • cm−3. There was a negative correlation between the concentration of heavy metals in soils and the growth inhibition zones (in the case of cadmium this correlation was high), indicating that the soil contamination with cadmium may have modified the soil population of Streptomyces spp., causing extinction of the susceptible strains while the ones with reduced sensitivity survived. The results of the presented research indicated that the ArcelorMittal steelworks contaminates the soil environment, which may affect the microbial community of soils, not only by reducing the population, but also by decreasing biodiversity of soil microorganisms, which was particularly visible in the case of cadmium - a strongly toxic heavy metal. This study demonstrates that the heavy metal contamination is a serious environmental problem. This phenomenon needs to be monitored and controlled to prevent irreversible changes to the ecosystem.

Opis:
For the sustainable development of urban areas, it is necessary to identify if environmental pollution exists and where hot spot pollution sources lie. In this study, 280 topsoil samples were collected from an industry estate in Zlin (the Czech Republic). In these samples, the presence of toxic metal was analyzed by wave dispersed X-Ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), and statistical analysis revealed that the major anthropogenic contaminants in the topsoil were Pb, Zn and Sn. Further contaminant analysis by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) determined the maximum contents of 28558.47 mg/kg for Pb, 1132.35 mg/kg for Sn and 2865.22 mg/kg for Zn in selected topsoil samples. According to soil pollution index results, the main proportion of topsoil is contaminated, with the possible sources of contamination being traffic and a nearby municipal heating plant. This study proves that the combination of preliminary ED-XRF topsoil analysis, a multivariative statistical approach, AAS analysis and the geographical information system (GIS) is effective and together form a powerful tool for mapping topsoil contamination and conducting an environmental risk assessment.

Until recently, the level of industrial air pollution in the Sudetes (a mountain range extending on the Czech Republic and Poland border) was very high. This caused a large-scale forest decline, especially in the western part of the Polish Sudetes: in the Izerskie and Karkonosze Mts. An analysis of data on fir defoliation in that area, collected directly after the period of heavy industrial pollution, showed a clear dependence of the degree of defoliation of the primary crown on canopy density: the lower the density, the higher the degree of defoliation.

The leaf blades of white ash Fraxinus americana L. and London plane tree Platanus acerifolia Willd. growing in heavy polluted industrial areas were studied for morphological and anatomical changes developed under the influence of industrial contamination. The aim of the investigation was to determine and compare the influences of air polluted with SO2, NxOx, Pb, As, Zn, Cu etc. on the morphology and the structure of the leaves of these deciduous trees. Both species are tolerant to environmental changes but with different environmental characteristics and tolerances and they are widely used for planting. Under polluted conditions, the trees strengthened the anatomic xeromorphic characteristics of their leaf structures, which gave them the opportunity to mitigate the stressful conditions of the environment. The observed responses are regarded as adaptive and compensative to the adverse effects of air pollution.

Opis:
This work was undertaken to determine lipids changes in needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations growning on polluted stands near a phosphate fertilizer factory in Luboń, and copper smelter in Głogów and in a control area in Kórnik. Needles from polluted areas had a lower content of total phospholipids than samples from the unpolluted site. Greater changes were detected in membranes of needles collected in October and January. In comparison with the control total phospholipid in needles of populations from polluted areas were 14 to 33% lower. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylglicerol (PG) were the dominant phospholipids. The analysis of fatty acids in phospholipid fraction showed a decrease of linoleic acid (18:2) and linolenic acid (18:3) contents. The level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in needles of three populations from polluted areas was up to 40% lower as compared with the control. Moreover, phospholipids and their fatty acids showed seasonal fluctuations. The contents of PC, PG and PE increased in autumn and in winter, during the process of cold acclimation. In July, current-year needles did not show significant differences in membrane lipid composition between the polluted areas of Scots pine populations. The results suggest that the lipid changes of needles could be associated with disturbances in phohospholipid metabolism, caused by environmental pollution.

Opis:
Zinc-lead waste dumps belong to the type of industrial waste areas which are unyielding to natural reclamation techniques. Heterogeneous composition of waste results in numerous complex physical and chemical processes causing serious air and water pollution in the surrounding areas. Moreover, industrial waste is characterized by high concentration of heavy metal compounds and other toxic substances which constantly affected all living organisms exposed to them. The present research shows the results of research aimed to establish degree of the sensitivity of Betula pendula seedlings to the adverse conditions of zinc-lead waste from the "Silesia Steelworks" in Katowice. Two kinds of substrate, i.e. slag and post-flotation waste was placed in pot cultures (17 cm in top diameter) and for each kind of waste a different soil variant was applied: (I) dump soil, (II) dump soil fertilized with NPK fertilizer, (III) dump soil covered with a 2.5 cm layer of garden soil, (IV) dump soil mixed with peat. In the experiment each variant of the soil type was used in 3 pots (repetitions). Additionally, pots with garden soil were used as control. Each pot received 25 seeds. The seeds of Betula pendula growing on smelter waste dumps had been collected in the vicinity of the dumps. At the end of the experiment, the seedlings were counted and the leaf colouring, height, root length of each seedling was measured. The results of the experiment showed that the most favourable soil type for Betula pendula seedlings were variants Nos (III) and (IV).
