The main objective of the article is to discuss issues concerning the ‘tourist product’ and its historical evolution and the authors attempt to shed new light on the development of tourist flows and tourist services. The discussion is based on the four specific categories of tourist product (ancient, university, industrial and global with special attention paid to the non-historical character of tourist flows motivated by religion and health. In the summary development trends in tourism are pointed to, in particular the benefits and hazards for tourist areas.
Głównym celem artykułu jest uporządkowanie zagadnień związanych z produktem turystycznym i jego historycznym rozwojem. Autorzy podejmują próbę nowego spojrzenia na rozwój migracji i usług turystycznych. Podstawą rozważań są wyróżnione cztery kategorie produktu turystycznego (produkt antyczny, uniwersytecki, industrialny i globalny). Szczególną uwagę poświęcono ahistorycznemu rodzajowi migracji o charakterze religijnym i uzdrowiskowym. Wskazano kierunki rozwoju turystyki w przyszłości, a zwłaszcza korzyści i zagrożenia dla miejscowości (obszarów) turystycznych.

Omówiono czynniki wpływające na współczesną sytuację ekonomiczno-społeczną uzdrowisk. Z formalnego punktu widzenia można je podzielić na prawno-polityczne, ekonomiczne i społeczne. Na podstawie przedstawionych uwarunkowań należy wnioskować, że mimo upływu czasu sytuacja uzdrowisk nie wykazuje symptomów znaczącej poprawy. Podjęto zatem próbę zaprezentowania działań uprawdopodobniających osiągnięcie pozytywnych wyników ekonomicznych i konkurencyjnej pozycji.
The author discusses factors affecting the present economic and social situation of spas. Formally, they could be divided into statutory, economic and social. Based on the situation presented here it can be concluded that despite the passage of time the condition of spas has not improved. Thus the author attempts to present ideas which might bring about positive results and raise competitiveness.

In this study the topic of pioneering form of the cosmic tourism is described. The effect of this kind of travel on human being is discussed. The attention is also paid to the complexity of the man's body structure. The main directions of the development of the cosmic tourism are introduced and a few facts from the history of the conquest of space are reminded, and also there are considerations to this topic. The study consists of four chapters. In the first part the cosmic tourism is described. In the second selected elements of body structure and human body function are introduced, also its complex character and basic regulating mechanisms. A confrontation of human body possibilities with factors present during the flight to space is touched up, e.g. on G-force and weightlessness. A problem of the astronaut's sleep is described, as well. Then, the results of the poll carried out in the topic of an interest of flight in space are introduced. Furthermore, the problem of life's risk during flight in space is touched up as compared to extreme sports. At the end, words of the only Pole, so far, in the outer space about the cosmic tourism are quoted.

The paper reviews available literature on globalization processes in health services. The aim is to identify the main research challenges and basic trends in this area. The analysis is made with the use of SinceDirect, EBSChost, BMJ Journals, ProQuest Medical Library and MEDLINE-PubMed data and covers the 1990-2007 period. The author concludes that theoretical discussions and empirical studies on the globalization of health services are still at an early stage of development even though health services and related sectors have a considerable share in most countries’ GDP. The paper offers a modified version of a model for describing the influence of globalization on health. The author shows that the growing influence of globalization on national health care systems is accompanied by an increased share of the private sector in these systems. At the same time, countries are increasingly adopting measures to boost the role of private funds in financing their health care systems. Analyses show international medical services are almost exclusively provided by private businesses. This means that globalization is primarily benefiting private health service providers and private investors, the author says.

Przedmiotem kolejnego odcinka cyklu poświęconego ochronie prawnej walorów turystycznych jest ochrona walorów uzdrowiskowych. Jej podstawą są przede wszystkim przepisy ustawy z 28 lipca 2005 o lecznictwie uzdrowiskowym, uzdrowiskach i obszarach ochrony uzdrowiskowej oraz o gminach uzdrowiskowych. Najważniejsze prawne instrumenty ochonne to: 1) objęcie uzdrowisk i obszarów ochrony uzdrowiskowej szczególnym uzdrowiskowym reżimem prawnym, 2) zaostrzenie norm dopuszczalnych zanieczyszczeń powietrza i hałasu na obszarach uzdrowiskowych, 3) zaostrzenie opłat i kar za usuwanie i niszczenie drzew i krzewów w uzdrowiskach i obszarach ochrony uzdrowiskowej.
Next from the series of articles devoted to the legał protection of tourism values concerns protecting the values of health resorts. The basis for this protection is constituted by the regulations of the Act on Medical Care in Health Resorts, Health Resorts and Protected Health Resort Areas and Municipalities dated 28 June 2005. The key legal instruments include: 1) putting health resorts and protected health resort areas under special legal regime, 2) making the permissible norms for air pollution and noise in health resorts more restrictive, 3) increasing the fees and fines for cutting down or damaging trees and bushes in the protected health resort areas.

The paper presents the issue of the sustainable tourism which corresponds with the concept of the sustainable development. The work concentrates on the theoretical analysis of the sustainable tourism, often treated as a tool of accomplishment of the sustainable development or the tool of the development of tourism itself. The article is an attempt to state the basic rules of the sustainable tourism on the so-called rural health resort areas. The work shows what kind of tourism can be developed on the analysed rural areas, at the same time being in harmony with the concept of the sustainable tourism. In the paper the analysis of the national and foreign literature from the domain of the concept of the sustainable tourism, including rural areas, and the observation of the chosen indicators of the sustainable development of health resorts villages are presented. The concept of the sustainable development arose in the 1970s and it was an expression of the critical reaction to the growing interference in natural and social and cultural resources. The concept of the sustainable development is not opposite to the possibilities of economic growth, on condition that the pace of the reproduction of the environmental resources is not slower than the pace of the usage of these resources. The theoretical basis of the usage of the rules of the sustainable development in the world literature started to be seen at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. The document „Agenda 21 for Travelling and Tourism Economy” turned out to be fundamental for the development of the concept of the sustainable tourism. The practical use of the concept of the sustainable development in the rural areas economy needs devising indicators and indexes characterizing this development. The indicators are divided into: indicators of environmental pressure (danger, stress), indicators of condition (quality) of the environment and indicators of preventive activities. The economic significance of the tourism lies in its positive influence on the different departments of the economy, including agriculture. One of the more important impacts is stopping the migration of people from the rural areas.

W artykule omówiono w sposób syntetyczny problem rożnych czynników wpływających na popularność wybranych destynacji w sylwaturystyce. Przy charakterystyce ważniejszych walorów tej turystyki zwrócono szczególną uwagę na ich atrakcyjność w dziedzinie poznawczej, wypoczynkowej oraz zdrowotnej. Korzysta się z turystyki leśnej również w celu odzyskania pełnej zdolności psychofizycznej oraz dla wyciszenia organizmu i poprawy pogarszającego się stanu zdrowia. Organizowane w lasach ścieżki oraz tzw. izby przyrodnicze mają również znaczenie edukacyjno-kulturowe. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie szerszemu ogółowi czytelników - potencjalnym turystom - walorów i atrakcji sylwaturystyki; wskazanie władzy lokalnej, właścicielom obszarów leśnych i innym podmiotom rynku turystycznego na duże możliwości rozwoju rożnych form turystyki leśnej z korzyścią dla uczestników tego rynku.
The article concisely presents different factors which increase popularity of chosen sylvan tourism destinations. When describing major tourism prroducts, special attention was drawn to the attractiveness of their cognitive, leisure and health features. Sylvan tourism helps to regain one's psychophysical abilities, calm down and improve one's deteriorating health. By creating paths and other attractive forms of tourism arrangements, forests gain also an educational and cultural meaning.

In recent years several vector-borne, parasitic or zoonotic diseases have (re)-emerged and spread in Europe with major health, ecological, socio-economical and political consequences. The problem of increasing risk of vector-borne diseases in Europe is widely discussed at periodic international conferences like International Jena Symposium on Tick-borne Diseases or the conference organized by European branch of Society for Vector Ecology ESOVE. The problem takes also effect in establishment of international projects (e.g. EDEN, VBORNET). Mosquitoes and ticks are the most remarkable disease vectors transmitting microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, parasitic protozoans) or metazoan parasites (nematodes). In Europe mosquitoes have a strong effect on human life quality, tourism and economic development because of being a nuisance. However, the changing climatic conditions make mosquito-borne diseases which have already been eradicated, or newly appearing diseases, a threat to human health. Among tick-borne diseases in Europe, the most common is Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis, but the list of pathogens identified in ticks keeps increasing and it is expected to increase the number of cases of tick-borne infections. Assessment of vector-borne risk is enhanced by very helpful Geographic Information System – a notable technique for comprehensive analysis of both abiotic and biotic data.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań ankietowych dotyczących oceny atrakcyjności trzech polskich uzdrowisk (Krynica, Polanica i Kołobrzeg). Analiza dotyczy zarówno próby oszacowania, które z cech wpływają najbardziej na ogólną ocenę atrakcyjności uzdrowiska, jak i tego, czy występują różnice w ocenach kuracjuszy z uzdrowisk będących na odmiennym poziomie rozwoju funkcji uzdrowiskowej oraz między kuracjuszami, którzy sami decydują o miejscu kuracji oraz za których zdecydowali inni.
The publication presents the results of the survey concerning the evaluation of the attractiveness of the three Polish spas (Krynica, Polanica and Kolobrzeg). The analysis concerns both attempt to estimate which of the features affecting the total score of the attractiveness of the resort, as well as whether there are differences in the score of the visitors form spas who are at different stages of the development of spas function, and between the spa visitors, who themselves decided about location of treatment and this visitors who have not decided by themselves.

Spa tourism is part of health tourism. Its basic purpose is to stay at the resort and use its facilities and methods of spa treatment in order maintain and improve health. Spa tourism is thus defined as traveling to spa resorts. The main purpose of such trips is to improve physical and mental well-being. Spas and the related services play an important role in ensuring socio-economic conditions while providing rest, recuperation, rehabilitation and prevention and therefore it is contributing to the health of citizens. On the other hand, they play an important role in the economy of cities and regions, stimulating economic development of the resorts, creating new jobs and activating local communities. Tourism which includes the trips to spa resorts for therapeutic purposes is one of the most important and fastest growing sectors of the world economy. The results of studies and research indicate that every year more and more Poles and foreign visitors use the spa resorts on an individual basis and on a commercial basis. Spa resorts in Europe constantly enrich and develop their offer with new services and products to reflect changing needs and preferences of customers. This trend should also be followed by Polish spa resorts aside the traditional methods of providing a wide range of spa and wellness services. One of the most important challenges facing the Polish health resort industry is to go beyond the services related only to spa and healing, and to focus on broadening their range of cultural and leisure-related services. Polish spa resorts moreover have a unique opportunity for development of more commercial and specialized services.

Opracowanie jest poświęcone koncepcji projektu badawczo-wdrożeniowego pod nazwą Europejskie Centrum Zielonej Terapii i Rekreacji, zlokalizowanego na pograniczu polsko-litewsko-białoruskim. W artykule „zieloną terapię” i rekreację odniesiono do zmęczenia psychicznego i regeneracji kreatywnych sił człowieka. Adresatem tych przedsięwzięć w głównej mierze jest klasa kreatywna Richarda Floridy. W artykule omówiono trzy problemy. Pierwszy z nich to teoretyczne podstawy psychoterapeutycznego oddziaływania natury z odniesieniem do teorii biofilii E.O. Wilsona i teorii regeneracji uwagi R. Kaplan i S. Kaplan. Powołano się na wyniki badań A. Krzymowskiej-Kostrowickiej, R.S. Ulricha, P.A. Bella, S. Lyubomirsky i innych. Wskazano też wybrane metody badania przydatności ekosystemów do celów terapeutycznych i rekreacyjnych: metodę "transect walk" oraz „Indeks reakcji emocjonalnej na środowisko” J.A. Russela i U.F. Laniusa. Drugie zagadnienie to prezentacja wielkich obszarów przyrodniczych na pograniczu polsko-litewsko-białoruskim i możliwości ich wykorzystania do „zielonej terapii” i rekreacji. Uzupełnieniem różnorodności biologicznej i krajobrazowej tych terenów jest unikatowe zróżnicowanie kulturowe regionu. Trzecie zagadnienie to specyfikacja problemów do rozwiązania w projekcie badawczo-rozwojowy.
The elaboration is dedicated to the presentation of the concept of research and implementation project known as the European Centre of Green Therapy and Recreation, which is located at the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarussian border. In this paper, green therapy and recreation were related to physical tiredness and regeneration of man’s creative power. These undertakings are addressed mainly to the Creative Class theory by Richard Florida. The article presents three problems. The first problem regards the theoretical bases of psychotherapeutic influence of nature, with reference to the Biophilia theory by E. O. Wilson and the Attention Restoration theory by R. Kaplan and S. Kaplan. Reference was also made to results of the research conducted by A. Krzymowska-Kostrowicka, R. S. Ulrich, P. A. Bell, S. Lyubomirsky and other scientists. There were also demonstrated the selected methods of analysing the usefulness of ecosystems for therapy and recreation needs: the ‘transect walk’ method and index of emotional reaction to the environment by J. A. Russel and U. F. Lanius. The second issue is the presentation of large natural areas at the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarussian border and the possibilities of using them for green therapy and recreation. Supplementation of the biological and landscape diversity of these areas is the unique cultural diversification of this region. Third issue presented in this paper regards specification of problems that need to be solved in the research and development project.

Opis:
Regional competitiveness is an obligatory task for regions on the territorial, financial and referential level. Health and wellness tourism nowadays plays an important role in the regional policy of many European countries. It seems to be an element of the future competitiveness because of the ageing population or health and wellbeing oriented populations. The aim of the paper is to analyse the potential of Lublin region health services and their role in building sustained regional competitive advantage.
