Opis:
Purpose: To study the effects of socioeconomic variables on health stock using Grossman model in Shiraz, Iran. Materials and Methods: This was an applied, cross-sectional and analytical-descriptive study conducted in Iran, Shiraz in 2012. A sample of 1538 individuals from 769 households was determined using stratified sampling proportional to size and systematic random sampling methods. Health stock was measured using Quality of Life SF36 questionnaire, and an ordered probit model was used to econometrically estimate the demand for health equation. Results: The results showed that being male and having high school and university degrees had positive and significant effects on health stock (p<0.05). Also, ages over 44 years and being unemployed had negative, and significant effects on health stock (p <0.05). However, the estimated effects of monthly income level, public health insurance coverage status and supplementary health insurance coverage status were positive, but not significant. Conclusions: According to the results, the following suggestions can be made for improving individuals' health status: providing education opportunities and facilities for all, increasing health and wellness education programs at different education levels, providing health education for all people through the media at the appropriate time, implementing health subsidies and exemption from payment policies for the elderly, increasing recreational, and sports facilities for women, etc.

Opis:
Analiza empiryczna obejmuje 27 krajów OECD i lata 1990–2007.
The purpose of analysis conducted in the paper is to investigate socio-economic determinants of life expectancy in OECD countries. Life expectancy is used as a measure of population health and health production function is the theoretical basis for analysis. The empirical analysis is based on the data from 27 OECD countries and comprises period 1990–2007. The equations of female and male life expectancy at ages 0, 40, 65 and 80 were esti-mated using regression analysis for panel data (fixed-effects models). The results indicate that income (represented by per capita GDP) is important determinant of life expectancy. Other factors positively influencing life expectancy are health care expenditures and education (proxied by employment in services). The factors that influence life expectancy negatively are alcohol, tobacco and sugar consumption as well as sulphur oxides emission. The results suggest that periods of economic downturns may cause negative health consequences.

INTRODUCTION The dynamics of social, environmental and economic factors that we are facing presently leads to a situation in which the question of the real impact of these factors on the population health status remains unanswered. AIM The aim of the study is to identify and quantify the impact of these factors on the population's health. MATERIALS AND METHODS Aggregated data from 66 subregions of Poland (for 2010) was used. The measures of male and female life expectancy at ages 0, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 65 were used. The impact of the following factors on life expectancy was investigated: health care, remuneration, education investment, accessibility of sewage systems, divorce rate and air pollution. The health production function was the basis for the empirical analysis and regression analysis was used in estimating 12 models. RESULTS (1) the factor influencing life expectancy of both genders most intensively is investment in education; (2) the importance of health care for life expectancy is significant for females at almost every age, while it is significant only for older males; (3) female life expectancy is not affected by the remuneration level, while it is important for male life expectancy; (4) the impact of divorce rate is much more significant for males as compared to females. CONCLUSIONS 1. The factors affecting life expectancy depend on age and gender. 2. The actions targeted to increase life expectancy should involve – apart from health policy – also other actions of income, environmental and education policies.
Oszacowano 12 modeli.

Opis:
Introduction: In an average Polish person aged 35–44, more than 16 teeth have or had been affected by dental caries. Of that number, almost half of the teeth have already been extracted. Oral health behaviours contribute to this civilization disease in 50%. Such poor oral health status limits the ability of the affected people to take many social and professional roles. Objectives: To evaluate current oral health behaviours and their trends among 35–44 year old Polish people during the period of recent 30 years. Material and Methods: The data were obtained from the International Collaborative Studies conducted in 1978 and 1988 at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Łódź, Poland, under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as from 3 stages of the study on Nationwide Monitoring of Oral Health Status and Its Conditioning performed in 1998, 2002 and 2010. The researchers evaluated oral health behaviours and oral health condition of 5425 subjects. Results: Despite a noticeable improvement, poor oral health behaviours are observed in 30%–40% of the adults. In the analysed period, the number of people brushing their teeth at least twice a day increased by more than 10% and the number of people using dental floss increased by 38%. Only 60% of the adults visited a dentist at least once a year. Reduced accessibility of state-run, free-of-charge dental care has caused that over 58% of Poles paid for their dental services. Every 3rd person of working age has not visited a dentist for longer than 2.5 half years, primarily due to behavioural and financial reasons. Oral health behaviours of Polish people are among the poorest in Europe. Conclusions: Despite a noticeable improvement of the behaviours, gap between the Poles and citizens of other highly developed countries is around 20 years. A health promotion programme including oral health issues, if implemented in workplaces, might considerably reduce this gap.

Public service delivery has never been the area of a state monopoly, but the process of the “destatization” of public service delivery accelerated with the wave of new public management (NPM). The competition between private suppliers of public services was expected to reduce public expenditures and improve the quality of services. However, current scepticism towards NPM triggered the revival of the idea of co-production, i.e. direct participation of citizens in public service delivery. This paper reviews the practices of co-production in European health care systems. It is based on an extensive definition of co-production, not only including co-delivery, but also co-planning, co-financing and co- -evaluation. The existing evidence regarding the effects of co-production is also reviewed.

Opis:
Purpose – Environmental degradation resulting from human activities may adversely affect human health in multiple ways. Until now, policies aimed at mitigating environmental problems such as climate change, environmental pollution and damage to biodiversity have failed to clearly identify and drive the potential benefits of these policies on health. The conducted study assesses and demonstrates how specific environmental policies and instruments influence perceived human health in order to ensure input for a data-driven decision process. Design/methodology/approach – The study was conducted for the 2004–2020 period in European Union (EU) countries with the use of dynamic panel data modeling. Verification of specific policies’ impact on dependent variables allows to indicate this their effectiveness and importance. As a result of the computed dynamic panel data models, it has been confirmed that a number of significant and meaningful relationships between the self-perceived health index and environmental variables can be identified. Findings – There is a strong positive impact of environmental taxation on the health index, and the strength of this relationship causes effects to be observed in the very short term, even the following year. In addition, the development of renewable energy sources (RES) and the elimination of fossil fuels from the energy mix exert positive, although milder, effects on health. The reduction of ammonia emissions from agriculture and reducing noise pollution are other health-supporting factors that have been shown to be statistically valid. Results allow to identify the most efficient policies in the analyzed area in order to introduce those with the best results or a mix of such measures. Originality/value – The results of the authors’ research clearly indicate the health benefits of measures primarily aimed at improving environmental factors, such as environmental taxes in general. The authors have also discovered an unexpected negative impact of an increase in the share of energy taxes in total taxes on the health index. The presented study opens several possibilities for further investigation, especially in the context of the rapidly changing geopolitical environment and global efforts to respond to environmental and health challenges. The authors believe that the outcome of the authors’ study may provide new arguments to policymakers pursuing solutions that are not always easily acceptable by the public.

Objectives The Health Impact Assessment (HIA) was conducted to evaluate the potential community health implications of a proposed oil drilling and production project in Hermosa Beach, California. The HIA considered 17 determinants of health that fell under 6 major categories (i.e., air quality, water and soil quality, upset conditions, noise and light emissions, traffic, and community livability). Material and Methods This paper attempts to address some of the gaps within the HIA practice by presenting the methodological approach and results of this transparent, comprehensive HIA; specifically, the evaluation matrix and decision-making framework that have been developed for this HIA and form the basis of the evaluation and allow for a clear conclusion to be reached in respect of any given health determinant (i.e., positive, negative, neutral). Results There is a number of aspects of the project that may positively influence health (e.g., increased education funding, ability to enhance green space), and at the same time there have been potential negative effects identified (e.g., odor, blowouts, property values). Except for upset conditions, the negative health outcomes have been largely nuisance-related (e.g., odor, aesthetics) without irreversible health impacts. The majority of the health determinants, that had been examined, have revealed that the project would have no substantial effect on the health of the community. Conclusions Using the newly developed methodology and based on established mitigation measures and additional recommendations provided in the HIA, the authors have concluded that the project will have no substantial effect on community health. This approach and methodology will assist practitioners, stakeholders and decision-makers in advancing the HIA as a useful, reproducible, and informative tool.

Antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria isolated from nasal swabs and lungs of pigs, to 16 commonly used antibiotics, was determined by disc diffusion test, ß-lactams showed the best activity against Streptococcus suis (S. suis) (> 99% of susceptible strains). The lowest sensitivity of S. suis was evidenced to: tylosin, tetracycline and neomycin (50%, 40% and 25%, respectively). Isolates of Escherichia coli (E. coli) demonstrated the highest susceptibility to cephalosporin (85% strains), gentamicin and norfloxacin (over 74%). The lowest susceptibility of E. coli was demonstrated to tiamulin and penicillin (11.3% and 1.9%, respectively). Over 80% of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) strains were susceptible to all antibiotics tested. The highest resistance of App, but demonstrated by below 20% of tested isolates only, was evidenced to neomycin and LxS. Isolates of Pasteurella multocida (Pm), Haemophilus parasuis (Hps) and Arcanobacterium pyogenes (A. pyogenes) were highly susceptible to the most antibiotics included in the analysis. The comparison of the in vitro susceptibility of pathogens to the chemotherapeutics used on Polish farms for the therapy of bacterial infection of pigs within the last five years and the last 10 years, showed an increasing percent of E. coli and S. suis strains resistant to commonly used antibiotics. It is also shown that Pm, Hps, App and A. pyogenes isolates were continuously susceptible to the most chemotherapeutics applied.

In this paper, the authors focused on the analysis and evaluation of factors affecting the level of occupational risk in "small" enterprises, with a particular emphasis on psychophysical factors in the manufacturing sector. The study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. The results were verified using the strucla interview method with elements of observation. The purpose of the paper was to draw attention to – often overlooked in the assessment of occupational risks by employers – psychophysical hazards with particular emphasis on psychosocial hazards. Respondents – employees of enterprises with a particular focus on the manufacturing sector – point to psycho-physical hazards as those that, right after hazardous (accident) hazards, significantly affect the level of occupational risk. However, the assessment of factors determining the level of occupational risk changes with the age of respondents. Older workers, more often than younger ones, perceive the factors that affect the level of occupational risk. Their experience and ability to reliably identify risks can be very useful in creating awareness of safe behavior among the youngest workers, who are most vulnerable to occupational accidents. The article also presents analyses and assessments of the symptoms of occupational stress, which is one of the factors shaping psycho-physical risk that is so often underestimated by many workers and employers.

Opis:
Spośród wyizolowanych z ziarniaków badanych zbóż gatunków, największy udział w ogólnej populacji grzybów miały saprotrofy, zwłaszcza Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium herbarum, Nigrospora oryzae i Papularia arundinis.
Seed health of four cultivars of spring barley (Rataj, Atol, Rodos and Stratus), four cultivars of spring wheat (Torka, Koksa, Korynta and Nawra) and four cultivars of oat (Polar, Chwat, Sławko and Szakal) originated from organic farming and harvested in the years 2004–2006 was tested. The studies showed that barley grains were infested by numerous fungi. Among them, most frequent were the saprophytic fungi: Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium herbarum, Nigrospora oryzae, Papularia arundinis and the pathogens: Fusarium spp. (mean from 1.5 to 43.7% of all fungi depending on species, cultivar and year of harvest) and Bipolaris sorokiniana (mean from 0.3 to 48.4%). All the examined seeds were infected to a large degree by Fusarium fungi (depending on year of harvest, mean 14.4–51.6% infected oat seeds, 14.2–25.0% infected wheat seeds and 9.0–51.6% infected barley seeds). Besides, barley seeds were often infected by B. sorokiniana — mean from 13.5 to 45.6%, depending on year of harvest.

Opis:
Dla procesów przechowywania surowca (CP1) i przechowywania wyrobów gotowych (CP2) mających określoną dolną i górną granicę tolerancji skuteczność procesów określono poprzez analizę wyliczonych wskaźników zdolności procesu Cp i Cpk.
The paper presents results of temperature measurements, which provided grounds to determine efficiency of the progress of key cold cured meat production processes in the HACCP system on the example of one of Meat Plants in Małopolskie Voivodeship. The efficiency of processes was assessed in predetermined control points (CP) and critical control points (CCP). In case of the processes involving raw material storage (CP 1) and finished product storage (CP2), which have specific lower and upper tolerance limits, process efficiency was determined through the analysis of calculated process capacity indicators - Cp and Cpk. In case of cold cured meat heat treatment process, process efficiency has been determined on the grounds of obtained temperature values. It has been proved that the process of raw material storage in cold room (CP1) is unstabilised (Cpk2 = 0.81), and corrective measures are necessary. The other analysed processes are stabilised.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the effect of replacing triticale (high rumen degradable starch) with maize grain (low rumen degradable starch) during the transition period and the first 120 days of lactation on metabolic and hormonal profile indices, milk production and fertility performance in cows. Forty-eight Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were divided into 4 groups: TT (2.5 kg triticale grain/cow per day supplemented from 14 days prepartum to day 120 postpartum), TM (2.5 kg triticale grain/cow per day supplemented from day 14 before parturition to calving, and then 2.5 kg maize grain to 120 days of lactation), MT (2.5 kg maize grain/cow per day supplemented from day 14 before parturition to calving, and then 2.5 kg triticale grain to 120 days of lactation), MM (2.5 kg maize grain/cow per day supplemented from 14 days prepartum to day 120 postpartum). Blood samples were collected 3 weeks and 1 week before calving and on days 14, 56 and 70 of lactation, and they were analyzed in terms of concentrations of glucose, insulin, leptin, insulin-like growth factor I, nonesterified fatty acids, triglycerides, cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen and activities of aspartate aminotransferase and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase. Milk samples were collected twice a day at weekly intervals and analyzed for fat, protein and lactose. Milk yield and individual dry mater intake were recorded at weekly intervals. Body condition was estimated 3 weeks before calving, on parturition day and on days 14, 56 and 120 of lactation. Replacing triticale grain with maize grain in the transition period and during lactation positively affected fertility of lactating cows. An increased first service conception rate and shortening of the days open period was observed in MM and TM groups in comparison to those found in group MT (P ≤ 0.05). The lowest number of services per conception was recorded in groups MM and TM (P ≤ 0.05). Although the impact of milk production and the most of the blood indices were not significantly affected by this treatment, the results of the study suggest that maize grain in the transition period and lactation might be a more effective energy source for dairy cows than triticale grain.

The fungi Trichoderma harzianum, T. polysporum, T. viride, Paeciliomyces fumosoroseus, P. lilacinus, Verticillium/lecanicillium lecanii, Ulocladium oudemansii, U. atrum and Beauveria bassiana are used or considered to be used for biocontrol of pests and plant diseases. Human exposure to these fungi in environments where they may naturally occur or are used as biocontrol agents has not been directly investigated to date. This review aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge of human exposure to fungi from the relevant genera. The subject of fungal taxonomy due to the rapid development of this issue is also discussed. B. bassiana, V. lecanii, T. harzianum, T. polysporum, P. lilacinus and U. oudemansii were infrequently present in the air and thus people in general seem to be seldom exposed to these fungi. However, when V. lecanii was present, high concentrations were measured. Fungi from the genera Trichoderma, Paecilomyces and Ulocladium were rarely identifi ed to the species level and sometimes high concentrations were reported. T. viride and U. atrum were detected frequently in different environments and sometimes with a high frequency of presence in samples. Thus, people seem to be frequently exposed to these fungi. Sequence data have led to recent revisions of fungal taxonomy, and in future studies it is important to specify the taxonomy used for identifi cation, thus making comparisons possible.

This article presents a brief analysis of the Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2015 on novel foods. The aim of this analysis is to understand how the objective of free movement of foodstuffs in the EU and the objective of public health protection are achieved within this Regulation. In this context, it is important to establish how the European legislation provides for the safety of novel foods. Also, the analysis of the preliminary rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union is crucial to understand what are the main issues of European legislation related to novel foods.
