Purpose: Children obesity consists a fundamental problem of public health in Greece. The understanding of the factors which is correlated to is a requirement for the implementation of intervening policy and treatment. The aim of the study was to investigate the dietary habits of the students in Lemnos Island and their correlation to obesity and overweight rates. Materials and methods: 130 students of the 4th, 5th and the 6th grade from three primary schools of Lemnos Island completed a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). A weigh measurement followed BMI calculation with the use of growth charts in order to estimate the rates of obese, overweight and underweight children. Correlations were carried out between children dietary patterns and their BMI. Results: Τhe majority of the children follow a balanced diet according to the nutritional recommendations. The obesity prevalence and the overweight rates of the Lemnos students was 8.2% and 16.4%, respectively. 72.4% of the students had normal weight, whereas 3% of them were underweight. There was no correlation of obesity/overweight rates with the dietary patterns and physical activity. Boys consume breakfast more frequently in comparison to girls and are more occupied with athletic activities. In the 4th grade the breakfast consumption was more frequent in comparison to the 6th grade. Conclusions: The students of Lemnos appear low rates of overweight, in comparison with other studies in Greek land, by following a balanced diet. The environment and the living conditions of the children on the island may contribute to adapting a healthier way of living.

Opis:
Introduction: Nutrition is one of the most essential factors conditioning normal human growth and development. Nutritional errors can be the basis for the emergence and development of obesity, hypertension, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis or postural defects. Purpose: The study aimed to learn about the dietary habits of urban high-school youth. Materials and methods: The study was conducted using the original questionnaire in 2013 and covered 200 students of randomly selected high schools. Results: Among the subjects, 70.8% consumed 4 or 5 meals during the day. The boys have eaten five meals significantly more often during the day than girls. The first breakfast was consumed by 76.5% of students and the second breakfast with 69.7%. Of the subjects, 80% indicated the eating between meals. The girls preferred sweets, fruit, and sandwiches, and the boys had sandwiches, sweets, and dairy drinks. The highest percentage of the examined youth ate sweets 3-4 times a week (41.6% girls and 35.6% boys). The respondents who consumed fast food once a week constituted of 60.9% of girls and 48.7% of boys. The girls consumed sweetened drinks most often once a week, and boys 3-4 times a week. Conclusions: Nutritional errors of adolescents consisted of irregular consumption of meals, late time of the last meal before bedtime, consumption of a large number of sweet and spicy snacks and sweetened beverages were found. Wrong nutrition concerned both girls and boys

Introduction. Healthy nutrition is very important during pregnancy for both a baby and a mother. Modification of metabolic and hormonal processes i.e. metabolic programming occurs already at the prenatal stage. This process significantly affects the baby’s health and eating habits at a later age. The diet of a pregnant woman should supplement the demand for energy, nutrients, vitamins and minerals. An expecting woman needs to also avoid products that are contraindicated during this period, such as raw milk, eggs or meat. Aim. Assessment of nutritional behavior of pregnant women from the Podkarpacie province. Materials and method. 228 women living in the Podkarpackie province were enrolled in the study. Surveys were collected via the Internet. An anonymous questionnaire developed by the authors was used. Results. Women’s eating habits are primarily influenced by education. Most women had knowledge about proper nutrition and awareness of its impact on the health of the baby. A worrying fact was a very low intake of dairy products. 44% of women consumed dairy products only once a day. Fruit and vegetables consumption was also low (40% of the respondents ate only from 100 to 200 g during the day). Conclusions. Although part of the eating habits of pregnant women is correct, nutritional education should be introduced in this group, especially related to the adequate supply of dairy products, fruit and vegetables to supplement the necessary vitamins, minerals and protein.

Opis:
Introduction Due to the fact that care about health, where proper eating habits are one of its constituents, exerts a strong impact on both social and economic life of a country, it is not just an individual case of each person, but a public matter.  The state of health status is obviously subject to a number of factors. However, the habits and customs with regard to daily habits are of particular importance due to the significance of food for the physical existence of each human body. These habits are formed in childhood and youth, however they undergo modifications throughout the whole life. Quite frequently the possessed knowledge is not a sufficient motivation to make great changes in the manner of eating, thus it does not change the eating habits. The aim of the paper is to determine the level of knowledge of clinic patients, selected at random, on proper eating habits.Materials and methodsThe research was conducted during the period of January-February 2016 year in a Lublin clinic. The investigation comprised 148 respondents. The method used in the research was a diagnostic survey, and the selected technique was a questionnaire conducted among the respondents, using a birth certificate, an interview and an anthropometric study. The study included 148 persons, who were further divided into two groups: students and workers. The respondents were the inhabitants of Lublin and nearby villages. The survey findings underwent a static programme analysis in Statistica 9.1 software (StatSoft, Poland).ConclusionsThe identification of nutritional knowledge and dietary behaviours of consumers as well as determination of the level and diversity of their nutritional awareness should become the basis for the preparation of guidelines on the content of broadcasts in order to promote healthy eating habits among consumers of different groups.

In this article, we take a closer look at the way in which names of habits operate in dictionaries and therefore in the Polish language. We refer our observations to an analysis of sixteen dictionary entries of our interest. What is more, we have confronted these entries with the results of questionnaires distributed among the students of the Poznań and Kalisz Institutes of Polish Philology. The analysed dictionary material provides an interesting insight and, more importantly, highlights the considerable discrepancy between dictionary theory and the practical command of the analysed words.

Opis:
Introduction: Aging is accompanied by several physiological and psychological changes in the organism of an individual (e.g., decreased sense of taste and smell, disruption of satiety, depression), which affect the nutritional intake. Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study is to highlight the nutritional habits of elderly people. Materials and methods: Extensive review of the recent literature in electronic databases (Pub med, Google scholar) and journals. Exclusion criterion for the articles was the language than the Greek and English. Results: The increase life expectancy is important to be accompanied by physical and mental health, quality of life and, where possible, from participation in social, economic, cultural and spiritual life. Adopting healthy dietary patterns, combined with daily physical activity, and factors such as avoiding smoking, could help considerably in reaching these goals. The physical and psychological changes occurring during aging may adversely affect nutritional status. Instead, a proper diet can positively influence the physical and emotional state of elderly people. Conclusions: Diet and generally nutrition habits of the elderly play an important role in their health.

We introduce consumption habits into a real-business-cycle setup augmented with a detailed government sector. We calibrate the model to Bulgarian data for the period following the introduction of the currency board arrangement (1999- 2018). We investigate the quantitative importance of the presence of internal consumption habits motive for the propagation cyclical fluctuations in Bulgaria. Allowing for internal habits in household’s consumption improves the model performance against data, and in addition this extended setup dominates the standard RBC model framework without habits. Therefore, the computational experiments performed in this paper suggest that habits are a quantitatively important model ingredient, which should be taken into consideration when analysing the effects of different policies in Bulgaria. This result can be viewed as an empirical validation of the habit model, and a rejection of the model without habits in the case of Bulgaria. In addition, we also demonstrate that internal habits are quantitatively more important than external habits for the Bulgarian business cycle.

This article is part of a wider research study about sporting habits which was carried out with young people between 10 and 16 years old from Majorca Island. In this paper we are analyzing what is the profile of Majorcan young athletes by gender, socio-demographic and sport level. A sample of 4301 boys and girls from Majorca were surveyed. The sample was obtained from multistage sampling. A specifically designed questionnaire was used. The results obtained in this study confirm a clear regression in physical activity to increment age of males and females. Also noteworthy are the clearly significant differences between men and women in this age group in terms of sports, frequency, and type of sport practiced. The practicing of sport by parents promotes a greater participation in children. Also, gender marks some differences in relation to the practice of sports in these ages.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of consumption of high energy products, dishes and drinks among high school students with different level of physical activity. The investigated population included 592 students at the age of 18.2 ± 0.03 y (girls DZ = 294, boys CH = 298) with different level of physical activity [adequate physical activity WAF (n = 352), inadequate physical activity NAF (n = 240)]. Dietary intake data was obtained using a Food Frequency Questionnaire FFQ, and physical activity was assessed by the use of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire IPAQ. BMI and skinfold thickness was also measured. The results showed that boys and students with inadequate physical activity significantly more often consume most of the products which lead to overweight and obesity. Moreover, it was found that the higher the level of physical activity, the higher was the consumption of sweet drinks. The frequency of consumption of juice, sweets drinks and energy drinks positively correlated with BMI and skinfold thickness. The findings of this study showed that the level of physical activity is a significant factor affecting dietary habits of students. It was also shown that excessive consumption of energy drinks could be one of the main reason of overweight and obesity.

Self-report questionnaire My Eating Habits was developed to assess influence eating habits and psychological factors in pathogenesis of overweight and obesity. It consist of 30 items, which include statements regarding weight, dieting, behaviours, attitudes associated with eating. My Eating Habits questionnaire was validated on a normal and overweight sample. Reliability of the questionnaire was assessed by internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and it was high – 0.89. Factor analysis yielded three factors, which explained 37.5% of the total variance: factor 1 – habit overeating, factor 2 – emotional overeating, 3 – restraint from eating. My Eating Habits questionnaire can distinguish reliably between subjects with overweight and normal weight. It may also identify subjects in the general population who are at risk for developing eating disorders, in particular overeating. The results of the study indicate that My Eating Habits questionnaire is a reliable and valid method, but it should be invaluable in long-term studies and in different groups, among them in subjects with anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Psoriasis isa quite common, chronic and immune-mediated skin disorder. The prevalence of psoriasis differs in various countries, but it is said to affect 2% of the world’s population in general. Psoriasis has many different clinical features but all lesions have the same characteristic: erythema, thickening and scale, although other clinical features are also connected, such as psoriatic arthritis, obesity and metabolic syndrome. All of these may lead to conditions impairing the quality of life. This review is an attempt to summarize recent data regarding environmental factors, together with epigenetic markers and processes playing an important role in psoriasis. State of knowledge. Many different environmental factors play a role in genetically predisposed patients. This is causes epigenetic alternations which may be a linking part in the whole process. Many studies have indicated a connection between psoriasis and various genes and antigens. The presence of HLA-Cw6 is common as well a strong link between its presence and the onset of psoriasis being observed. The main alternations are DNA methylation, histone’s modifications and the role of microRNA. Excessive reaction is usually not present without a triggering factor. Environmental factors are mostly rated, such as drugs, life style and habits (smoking, alcohol), diet, physical trauma (skin injury provoking Koebner phenomenon), stress, microorganism and infections. Conclusions. The correlation between pathogenesis of psoriasis and environmental risk factors, together with epigenetic alternations still require more investigation. Education about diet habits, nutrition, weight loss and healthy lifestyle seems to be important during the treatment of psoriasis.

Introduction and objectives. An increased incidence of depressive disorders observed in recent years in the Polish and world population is a serious health problem. The aim of the study was to compare dietary habits and nutritional status of patients with recurrent depressive disorders, depending on their place of residence. Their impact on selected metabolic parameters was also considered. Materials and method. The study group comprised 96 women and 84 men reporting to the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic at the Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of Bialystok in north-eastern Poland. The average age of the women was 46.7±11.7 years, and of men 47.0±11.3 years. In the quantitative assessmentof diets, 24-hour food recall interviews were conducted. Assessment of the nutritional status of the respondents consisted of anthropometric measurements, body composition analysis and biochemical parameters. Results. It was show that the diets of female urban inhabitants were characterized by a significantly lower energy value and total fat content, compared to their rural counterparts. The food rations of men living in the city had a significantly higher energy value, protein content and total FAT, compared to rural residents. It was also noted that urban residents of both genders were characterized by a lower percentage of body fat, both visceral and subcutaneous (women), and a higher water content than rural residents. Conclusions. The study showed dietary errors in all compared groups, regardless of place of residence, which was reflected in the nutritional status of the respondents. The results also indicated that during the declared change in dietary habits, the treatment of depressive patients should include dietary instructions in order to ensure an optimum supply of nutrients.

The number of migrants in contemporary Germany is constantly growing. There are also increasing problems arising as a result of cultural differences between the immigrants and the local population and also due to different habits of both groups. These differences, foreign traditions and their perception in Germany seem to be important topics from viewpoint of cultural studies not only for scientist, but also for students of German Studies, especially if the customs and forms of life become the subject of literature. In the following article the authoress is trying to bring near some of the main cultural differences between migrants and the local community depicted in the literature. To achieve this goal she analyses selected texts of German writers of Turkish origin. She also makes an attempt at answering the question whether and to what extent such a kind of literature can be useful for the audience outside Germany.

Opis:
Background. The sporting habits of parents have a very strong effect on the involvement of preschoolers in sports. Objectives. The aim of the study was to evaluate the physical activity (PA) of preschool children depending on their socioeconomic status and to determine the relationship between body mass and sporting habits. Material and methods. The research sample consisted of 252 Hungarian children (134 boys and 118 girls) of preschool age and their parents. A questionnaire was developed based on EU guidelines and it was used to evaluate PA and sporting habits. Results. A correlation was found between sporting habits and the percentile values of Body Mass Index by age. The survey showed that 86.5% of the children falling into the underweight category and 81.3% of those with normal weight were regularly involved in sports with their parents; these values were significantly higher than those of their overweight counterparts, of whom only 66.2% did sports with their parents (chi2 = 9.8, p = 0.028). Furthermore, 59.5% of underweight children and 63.3% of those with normal weight reported that their parents were involved in sports, while in the case of overweight children, this was observed in only 43.1% of parents (chi2 = 7.68, p < 0.05). Most of the children who were underweight or had normal weight did sports with their parents 2 to 3 times a week or more than 3 times a week (chi2 = 28.7, p = 0.000). Conclusions. The physical activity of preschool children was low. Obesity was more likely to occur in families with lower incomes. The development of educational programs for children, their families, preschool teachers, family doctors and pediatricians is needed to promote healthy diets and encourage more frequent physical activity.

Opis:
Lifestyle determines human diet. Such factors as school environment, aggressive advertising or nutrition fashion affect the diet during adolescence. The aim of this study was to assess selected eating habits in relation to the assessment of the nutritional status of adolescents in upper secondary school age. Studies on students, mainly from rural areas, were carried out in the school year 2010. The study included 114 students aged 16-18 years, from upper secondary school with diversified educational profiles in Lesko. To assess the diet a qualitative method, that is, an anonymous food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) of consumption of selected products and beverages, was used. Assessment of nutritional status was based on the interpretation of BMI and WHtR (Waist to Height Ratio) obtained from the students’ anthropometric measurements results. The statistical significance in the interpretation of BMI in gender groups (p=0.0075) and groups with various educational profiles (p=0.0013) has been observed. On the basis of the interpretation of WHtR the abdominal obesity was more common among girls (18.42%) and students of the secondary technical school of catering (24.24%). Gender was a significant factor differentiating the number of meals (p=0.0221). Eating irregular meals was proven in the study and the intervals between meals in distinguished groups were up to 4 hours (45.85% of the total). Adolescents from the region of Podkarpacie declared lower frequency of consumption of “fast-food” products. Occurring abnormal eating habits were characteristic for the examined age group. Occurring dietary mistakes did not significantly affect the assessment of body mass.

Opis:
Common millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and foxtail millet, also known as Italian millet (Setaria italica P. Beauv.), are among crop grasses that in the Antiquity and the early Byzantine period were grown on a relatively large scale. Yet although the sources indicate that they were among popular crops, they were neither as widespread not as highly regarded by consumers as wheat and barley. Views pertinent to the dietetic doctrine with regard to those to plants evolved before Galen’s lifetime and were very consistent, considering that they did not change over the period from the 2nd to the 7th century. This doctrine pointed to the less beneficial qualities of both these crop plants in comparison to the most highly values grains used in bread-making, especially to wheat. Also, common and foxtail millet were constantly present in the cuisine of the period in question, both being used as food in the rural areas rather than in cities. They were usually put in boiled dishes, because millet bread was unpopular owing to its brittleness and disagreeable taste. Both common and foxtail millet were included among the fármaka used in the period between the 2nd and 7th century, although they certainly were not as favoured in medicine as wheat and barley. Common millet was more often mentioned in the healing role. Both grains were used in medical procedures as components of healing diets, especially foods helpful in alleviating gastric disorders. Flour ground from common millet was applied as powder, whereas the grain itself found use as a component of warming cataplasms and poultices which usually had a drying quality. In addition, millet to was considered to be an efficacious antidote against poisons.

Opis:
Obesity is a significant social and health problem of societies world wide. Nowadays, the percentage of children suffering from overweight is increasing. This is the result of nutrition mistakes done during the first years of a young person’s life, and the lack of parental knowledge about the rules of proper nutrition. School-aged children suffering from overweight are clearly exposed to obesity in adulthood. The authors undertook to assess the nutritional habits of children attending primary schools located in the province of Lublin. The survey was conducted among a group of 150 students from three primary schools in the Lublin province. As a research method, the authors set up a survey in the printed version. The data obtained were compiled and analyzed in the Statistica 13™ (DellSoftware, USA). Over one-third (36.7%) of the children taking part in the study eat the recommended daily number of meals. Eating in the intervals between the main meals is often observed among the respondents (77.3%). Daily consumption of dairy products was declared by 20.8% of girls and 35.6% of boys. In questions about the promotion of healthy eating programs carried out at schools, the “Fruit and Vegetables at School” program was the most popular. The children who took part in the study showed mostly incorrect eating habits. The current situation requires further research and taking decisive steps by healthcare professionals, educators and parents. Consistent steps in existing programs promoting a healthy eating style will improve the epidemiological situation of abnormal nutrition among early-childhood children in the near future.

Background. Eating habits are mainly shaped at the first stages of human life. Incorrect eating habits in young individuals may in the future lead to eating disorders and predispose to abnormal body weight. Objective. The aim of the study was to investigate eating habits among adolescents and verify whether there are any differences in eating habits between girls and boys. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 337 post-primary school students, including 126 girls and 211 boys. A standardised questionnaire "My eating habits" was used as a research tool. Results. Secret snacking was slightly more common among girls (27.78%) than boys (24.17%). It was also girls who mostly admitted that other people comment on their diet, as indicated by 33.33% of girls and 18.96% of boys. Girls are also more likely to be dissatisfied with their body weight (41.27% vs. 27.49%) and to occasionally avoid eating despite feeling hungry (42.06% vs. 27.01%) compared to boys. Conclusions. The eating habits of young people are mostly varied. There are differences in the dietary habits of girls and boys; girls are more likely than boys to overeat under the influence of emotions and to apply dietary restrictions to themselves. In order to promote healthy eating habits and support the mental well-being of young people, it is recommended to provide nutritional education and to implement psychological support for those in need.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: Recent years have seen a significant increase in the incidence of diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes in particular, which closely correlates with the growing problem of overweight and obesity. The aim of the study was to compare eating habits among type 2 diabetic patients with varying body weight as well as to verify whether there was a relationship between dietary habits and the body mass index in these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted in diabetology outpatient clinics. A total of 353 diabetic patients participated in the study. The study consisted of two parts, i.e. authors' questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. RESULTS: The recommended number of 4–5 meals a day was declared by 48.6% of subjects with normal body weight, 50.3% of overweight and 48.4% of obese patients. Daily consumption of breakfast was confirmed by 77.1%, 73.9% and 77.8% of respondents, respectively. Daily consumption of whole-grain bread and coarse grits was mostly declared by subjects with normal body weight (62.8%), followed by overweight and obese patients (22.9% and 23%, respectively). Daily consumption of milk and fermented dairy beverages was reported by 24.3% and 15.7% of subjects with normal body weight, 22.3% and 14.7% of overweight patients as well as by 16.7% and 12% of obese patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Eating habits among patients with type 2 diabetes are varied, with healthy eating habits dominating in subjects with normal body weight. A relationship was found between the patients’ BMI values and some of the eating habits as well as consumption rates of various food products.
Codzienną konsumpcję pełnoziarnistego pieczywa i gruboziarnistych kasz najczęściej deklarowały osoby z prawidłową masą ciała (62,8%), rzadziej osoby z nadwagą i otyłością, odpowiednio 22,9% i 23% wskazań. Spożycie mleka i mlecznych napojów fermentowanych każdego dnia deklarowało odpowiednio 24,3% i 15,7% osób z prawidłową masą ciała, 22,3% i 14,7% z nadwagą oraz 16,7% i 12% z otyłością. WNIOSKI: Nawyki żywieniowe badanych pacjentów z cukrzycą typu 2 są zróżnicowane, przy czym największą liczbę prawidłowych nawyków żywieniowych zaobserwowano u osób z prawidłową masą ciała. Stwierdzono, iż występuje zależność pomiędzy BMI badanych pacjentów a niektórymi nawykami żywieniowymi i częstością spożycia poszczególnych produktów spożywczych.
