Opis:
Groundwater is a very important natural resource to support the activities of the residents of Pakis District, Malang Regency. On the other hand, increased activity puts pressure on groundwater quality. Agricultural intensification, urbanisation, and industrialisation can be sources of pollutants. Hydrological factors, topography, lithology, and surrounding rainfall are triggers for contamination of groundwater. The main objective of this research is to determine the characteristics, quality of groundwater, and its susceptibility to pollution. To complete this research, geoelectric measurements were carried out at 43 points spread throughout the study area and sampling of 18 shallow wells in agricultural, residential, and industrial areas for chemical analysis. All data obtained were analysed to create a map of the spatial distribution of groundwater vulnerability. The results show that the groundwater in the study location is in the transition zone and flows through the volcanic rock layers. The level of groundwater pollution is in the uncontaminated status to heavily polluted with pollutants in the form of heavy metal manganese and Escherichia coli bacteria. The spatial distribution of groundwater intrinsic vulnerability shows low, moderate, and high levels of vulnerability, respectively 32.99%, 60.87%, and 6.14% of the research area. Groundwater specific vulnerability associated with land use factors shows that 26.25% are negligible, 42.46% are low, and 31.29% are moderate. From this it can be concluded that the study area has been polluted both geogenically and anthropogenically, therefore, special actions must be taken to restore the quality of groundwater.

Opis:
This study aims at assessing and interpreting groundwater quality using statistical techniques in Otuoke and environs, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Fourteen (14) groundwater samples were collected in the rainy season and analyzed for their physico-chemical and heavy metal contents. Heavy metals were analyzed using Atomic Adsorption Spectrometer. Assessment for drinking purposes revealed that the water is predominantly acidic, with iron and manganese contents exceeding regulatory guidelines in most locations. All other parameters were within WHO and NSDWQ regulatory limits for safe potable water. Water Quality Index revealed that over 73% of the groundwater in the area (11 samples) had good to excellent quality; while the remaining 27% of the groundwater (3 samples) have poor to unsuitable quality for consumption. Assessment of water quality for irrigation purposes was achieved using Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Potential Salinity (PS), Permeability Index (PI), Sodium percentage (Na%), Kelly’s ratio (KR), and Magnesium Adsorption Ratio (MAR). On average SAR (4.19), PI (68.51%), MAR (37.45%) and PS (0.77) revealed excellent water quality, whereas Na% (66.46%) revealed doubtful water quality while KR (2.00) revealed unsuitable water quality. Using Piper and Stiff diagrams, hydrochemical facies defined from groundwater in the area includes; Na+K – Cl facies; Na+K - Mg – Cl facies; and Na+K - Ca – Cl facies. Gibb’s diagrams revealed that the dominant control on the hydrochemical facies and overall groundwater quality in the area has been attributed to precipitation and chemical weathering of subsurface rocks. Various ionic ratios including Mg/Ca (0.642), HCO3ˉ/Cl (0.040), (Na+K)/Cl (7.026) and Cation Exchange Values (-6.026) revealed low salt inland origin with respect to provenance. Pearson correlation matrices showed both positive and negative inter-relationships between the physico-chemical and heavy metals in groundwater within the study area. This study has proven the effective use of water quality index as a tool for defining the overall quality of water in Otuoke and its environs, along with hotspots that needs immediate attention. The results could also serve as a decision making tool that will aid in establishment of treatment facilities to improve the quality of water in the study area.

Opis:
In the year 1966 a well field supplying the city of Zielona Góra with water was opened in the ice-marginal valley of the Odra River, near the village of Zawada. After three years of water pumping from 22 wells tapping the shallow valley aquifer, a significant deterioration of water quality, especially involving the increase of concentrations of iron, sulphates, manganese and water hardness, as a result of the process of sulphide oxidation accumulated within the recent Holocene deposits, was observed. Despite drastic changes in quality (the increase of iron concentration to approximately 30 mg/l and sulphate concentration to above 300 mg/l), the well field was still operated as its water was used for purifying (coagulation) of the polluted surface water supplying the city of Zielona Góra. Based on the analysis of over 30-year-long period of water pumping, it was stated that the effect of the sulphide oxidation process on the quality of water was noticeable for the period of 19 years. The period of persisting very high concentrations of iron of above 15 mg/l amounted to approximately 6 years. It was also stated that the process of reducing the concentrations following the period of their maximum increase proceeded in two stages – the stage of rapid reduction of concentrations which lasted for about 4 years and the stage of slow changes which took about 10 years. The first one was related to the exhaustion of sulphides within the formations marked by good permeability, and the period of semi-decomposition of sulphides, which lasted for about 3 years, was determined based on the changes in iron concentrations. On the other hand, the reduction of concentrations at the stage of slow changes may be linked to the oxidation of sulphides occurring in the formations marked by weak permeability (silts, clays, peats).

The GIS-aided spatial interpolation was applied on collected groundwater data to predict selected parameters (i.e., pH, electrical conductivity, and temperature) for the selected water wells distributed over Mosul City in Iraq. A descriptive statistical analysis was conducted on collected samples to explore the statistical indices. The skewness test was also employed to test the distribution of data sets around their mean values. The natural logarithms function achieved least skewness values and thus was applied to transfer data sets in order to adjust normality of the data sets distribution. Among all applied semivariogram models, the J-Bessel semivariogram model was optimal in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) values. The average standard errors were 0.2217, 740.5, and 1.209 for pH, EC, and temperature, respectively.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare the physical-chemical quality parameters of shallow groundwater quality in peat bogs of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District in the context of the occurrence of selected boreal species of plant relics: dwarf birch (Betula humilis Schrank), downy willow (Salix lapponum L.) and swamp willow (Salix myrtylloides L.). Analyzes of shallow groundwater quality parameters included physical-chemical parameters: reaction (pH), electrolytic conductivity (EC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH4), nitrite nitrogen (NO2), nitrate nitrogen (NO3), total phosphorus (TP), phosphate (PO4), sulfate (SO2), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) by certified laboratory tests. It was found that the natural hydrochemical specification of peat bogs is characterized by fluctuations associated with the dynamics of internal metabolism of peat ecosystems without the visible impact of anthropopressure. This is confirmed by the concentration of nutrients: TN at the study sites were within a broad range of mean values: 16.92–45.31 mg·dm–3; NH4 (0.55–0.76 mg·dm–3); NO2 (0.06–4.33 mg·dm–3); and NO3 did not exceed 0.2 mg·dm–3, and concentration of TP adopted mean values in a range of 0.22–0.42 mg·dm–3. The studied physical-chemical factors of shallow groundwater were within the habitat preferences of the studied species, but in differentiated qualitative and quantitative ways determined optimal conditions for building the population of the studied species. Particularly values of TP lower than other obtained values in a range of: 0.08–0.32 mg·dm–3; PO4 = 0.1 mg·dm–3; TN = 2.2–21.2 mg·dm–3; NH4 = 0.1–0.46 mg·dm–3; DOC = 24.6–55.9 mg·dm–3, as well as higher than average pH values in a range of: 5.34–5.95 and concentration of Ca = 5.67–28.1 mg·dm–3 and Mg = 0.56–2.41 mg·dm–3, as well as EC = 72.1–142.3 μS·cm–1 can be treated as a condition favouring proper development of the population of dwarf birch. For Salix lapponum: a reduced level of values of nitrogen fractions (TN = 3.01–18.84 mg·dm–3; NH4 = 0.1–0.41 mg·dm–3), a reduced level of values of phosphorus fractions (TP = 0.09–0.44 mg·dm–3; PO4 = 0.1–0.44 mg·dm–3), part of ions (Ca = 4.39–19.63 mg·dm–3; Mg = 0.77–3.37 mg·dm–3), pH = 5.9–6.4, EC = 124–266 μS·cm–1 and DOC = 24.1–57.5 mg·dm–3. For the equally studied Salix myrtylloides, such conditions were met by: TP = 0.1–0.41 mg·dm–3; PO4 = 0.1–0.18 mg·dm–3, DOC = 27.5–50.9 mg·dm–3, pH = 5.3–5.94 and EC = 62.2–139.3 μS·cm–1.

The research was conducted around reclaimed landfill, located on the suburb of Otwock, around 25 km south-west of Warsaw. The objective of this study was to identify the chemical composition of groundwater and to determine the landfill impact on the chemical composition of groundwater downgrading from the landfill. Otwock landfill is located in very permeable area, where leachate quickly seeps into ground-water and plays a key role in controlling redox condition (and chemical composition of groundwater) of the downgradient area. High concentrations of HCO3-,Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Fetot. as well as DOC in groundwater downgradient from the landfill (in comparison to background water) likely indicate that groundwater quality is being significantly affected by leachate percolation. Currently, the load of contamination is released from landfill periodically and slowly moves (70 m/y) in the aquifer along the flow direction. The effect of distance of the piezometer from the pollution source was also investigated. As expected, water from the nearest piezometer to the land-fill showed the highest values of contaminant (water temperature, specific electrical conductivity, sodium, iron, chlorides (except for summer and autumn analysis) and calcium (except for winter analysis)). Chemical status of groundwater downgradient from the landfill is poor.

Groundwater is a key source of drinking water in Jordan. This study was conducted to assess the suitability of groundwater in major groundwater basins in Jordan for drinking purposes. The groundwater quality data from sixteen sampling stations within one-year-monitoring period from March 2015 to February 2016 were used. Weighted arithmetic water quality index (WQI) with respect to the Jordanian standards for drinking water was used for quality assessment. Sixteen Physical, chemical and microbiological parameters were selected to calculate WQI. The result showed that all physical and chemical parameters were almost below the maximum allowable level based on the Jordanian standards for drinking. On the other hand, the microbiological parameter (i.e. E.coli count) was exceeded the maximum allowable limit in all the studied locations based on the Jordanian standards for drinking water. The computed WQI values range from 40 to 4295. Therefore, out of 16 studied locations, three locations are classified in the “Excellent water” class, nine locations as a “Good water” class, one as a “Poor water” class, two as a “very poor water” class, and one as a “water unsuitable for drinking purpose” class. Furthermore, Escherichia coli is considered the most effective parameter on the determination of WQI in this study. This result highlighted the importance of including the microbiological parameters in any drinking water assessment, since they reflect with other physical and chemical parameters the actual condition of water quality for different purposes.

The result of human activity is polluting the soil and water. Based on the results of heavy metals studies it can be stated that the level of contamination of soil and water in urban areas is not high. This image is changing after taking into account other types of pollution. Besides some heavy metal contamination urban areas are contaminated with petroleum. Contamination of oil derivatives has a significant impact on the soil and water environment. In addition, some petroleum substances, such as petrol, have high vapour pressure. This causes a displacement of soil air from the vadose zone through the hydrocarbon gases, which creates a risk of explosion, especially in urban areas. This paper describes the pollution of ground-water oil derivatives in an urban area on the example of an oil filling station, operated for several years. In order to assess the condition of soil, 90 soil samples from different depths and 20 samples of groundwater were taken. Samples were taken for laboratory oil content tests. Using a computer program, a map of quality standards exceedances of soil and groundwater at the oil filling station and its vicinity was created. Results of laboratory tests of water samples are presented in tables and based on them, the classification of the underground water quality was made. Results of this study indicate a significant pollution of soil and groundwater exceeding the applicable standards. Condition of the soil and the quality of underground water in the oil filling station indicate the necessity of reparation.

Knowledge of the quantity and quality of groundwater is a prerequisite to encourage investment in the development of a region and to consider the sedentarisation of populations. This work synthesises and analyses data concerning the chemical quality of the available water acquired in the Foum el Gueiss catchment area in the Aures massif. Two families of waters are observed, on the one hand, calcium and magnesian chlorated-sulphate waters and on the other hand, calcium and magnesium bicarbonate waters. Multivariate statistical treatments (Principal Component Analysis – PCA and Discriminant Analysis – DA) highlight a gradient of minerality of the waters from upstream to downstream, mainly attributed to the impact of climate, and pollution of agricultural origin rather localised in the lower zones. These differences in chemical composition make it possible to differentiate spring, well and borehole waters. The main confusion is between wells and boreholes, which is understandable because they are adjacent groundwater, rather in the lower part of the catchment area. The confusion matrix on the dataset shows a complete discrimination with a 100% success rate. There is a real difference between spring water and other samples, while the difference between wells and boreholes is smaller. The confusion matrix for the cross-validation (50%).

The article presents the causes of groundwater quality deterioration resulted from bacterial and chemical contamination of the Tursko A well-field supplying water for the town Pleszew and surrounding villages. Presented problem is an example of serious consequences resulted from the lack of properly functioning rules of groundwater monitoring systems and regulations of groundwater protection, particularly in cases of high vulnerability of an aquifer exposed to influence of diverse groundwater pollution sources. Particular notice was made to the influence of the land reclamation drainage system on groundwater quality. The problem discussed demonstrates meaningfully negative consequences of the obligatory of groundwater protection zone abolition in 2001. The serious consequences of these law circumstances give rise to restore them according to its former state at least in cases of public well-fields.

Opis:
Analysis of groundwater quality in the alluvial aquifer of the lower Soummam Valley, North-East of Algeria, was realised through the application of multivariate statistical methods: hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) in Q and R modes, factorial correspondence analysis (FCA), and principal component analysis (PCA), to hydrochemical data from 51 groundwater samples, collected from 17 boreholes during periods of June, September 2016 and March 2017. The objectives of this approach are to characterise the water quality and to know the factors which govern its evolution by processes controlling its chemical composition. The Piper diagram shows two hydrochemical facies: calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. Statistical techniques HCA, PCA, and FCA reveal two groups of waters: the first (EC, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO42- and NO3-) of evaporitic origin linked to the dissolution processes of limestone rocks, leaching of saliferous soils and anthropogenic processes, namely contamination wastewater and agricultural activity, as well marine intrusion; and the second group (Na+, K+, and HCO3-) of carbonated origin influenced by the dissolution of carbonate formations and the exchange of bases. The hermodynamic study has shown that all groundwater is undersaturated with respect to evaporitic minerals. On the other hand, it is supersaturated with respect to carbonate minerals, except for water from boreholes F9, F14, and F16, which possibly comes down to the lack of dissolution and arrival of these minerals. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the utility of multivariate statistical methods in the analysis of groundwater quality.

Opis:
The research was aimed at identifying groundwater contaminants in the inflow area of the Gdańsk intakes of “Czarny Dwór” and “Zaspa Wodna”, and determining their origin. The hydrochemical study covered an area of over 12 km2; it also included the vertical variation in the chemistry of the aquifer. The study shows that the most common parameters decreasing the water quality are typical municipal sewage components, communication pollutants and, locally at several locations, compounds derived probably from some industrial plants or service facilities. In most of the area, the poor groundwater quality in the upper part of the aquifer, caused by anthropogenic influence, does not affect the quality of water in the central and lower parts of the aquifer. However, the water is mixed near the intakes, because of the induced groundwater inflow from the entire vertical section to the active wells. Migration of VOC compounds, which are heavier than water and gradually sink toward the aquifer's bottom, occurs in a different way. Based on a hydrochemical model, a prognosis of the time and direction of contaminants migration has been made.

The paper presents the water quality of the Quaternary aquifer in the area of reclaimed open pit Maczki-Bór in the light of results of monitoring investigations carried out in 1995-2014. The area consists of mine workings, the reclaimed field of Bór Zachód, and the area of Bór Wschód, which is under reclamation. Processing and mining material from coal mines is mainly deposited in the mine excavations. In the northern part of the Bór Zachód field, there is a municipal waste dump for the Sosnowiec city. The monitoring network consists of 12 piezometers monitoring groundwater of the Quaternary aquifer, 3 monitoring points on the major dewatering canals, and 2 points on the Biała Przemsza River (upstream and downstream of the cumulative mine dewatering discharge). The monitoring of the leachate is carried out in 2 observation wells located in the deposited rock on the dumping ground of Bór Wschód. This article discusses the significantly spatially diverse chemistry and quality of groundwater and surface water affected by varied anthropopressure.

Opis:
The paper presents the first stage of research on a geostatistical hydrogeochemical 3D model dedicated to the horizontal and vertical spatial and time variation in the topographical, hydrological and quality parameters of underground water in the Kłodzko water intake area. The research covers the period 1977–2012. For this purpose various thematic databases, containing original data on coordinates X, Y (latitude and longitude) and Z (terrain elevation and time – years) and on regionalized variables, i.e., the underground water quality parameters in the Kłodzko water intake area determined for different analytical configurations (22 wells, 14 wells, 14 wells + 3 piezometers), were created. The data were subjected to spatial analyses using statistical methods. The input for the studies was the chemical determination of the quality parameters of underground water samples taken from the wells in the water intake area in different periods of time. Both archival data (acquired in the years 1977–1999, 1977–2011) and the latest data (collected in November 2011 and in January 2012) were analyzed. First, the underground water intake area with 22 wells was investigated. Then in order to assess the current quality of the underground water, 14 wells out of the 22 wells were selected for further chemical analyses and a collection siphon wall was included. Recently, three new piezometers were installed in the water intake area and so new water samples were taken, whereby the databases were supplemented with new chemical determinations. The variation in the topographical parameter (terrain elevation) and in the hydrogeological parameters: water abstraction level Z (with and without the land layout being taken into account) and the depth of occurrence of the water table, was examined. Subsequently, the variation in quality parameters was studied on the basis of data coming from 22 wells, then 14 wells and finally from 14 wells and 3 piezometers. The variation in: Fe, Mn, ammonium ions NH4+, nitrite anion NO3 – and phosphate anion PO4 –3 content values, total organic carbon (TOC) C content, the pH reaction and temperature (°C) of the water was investigated. The basic statistics and distribution histograms of the topographical, hydrogeological and quality parameters (22 wells, 14 wells, 14 wells + 3 piezometers; the years: 1977–1999, 2011, 2011–2012) were estimated and detailed characteristics of the variation in the parameters in the whole underground water intake area over the years were obtained. Generally, the behaviour of the underground water quality parameters has been found to vary in space and time. Thanks to the multidirectional spatial analyses of the variation in the quality parameters in the Kłodzko underground water intake area some regularities in the variation in water quality have been identified.

Landfills of solid waste are among the potential sources of groundwater pollution. To avoid polluting by strongly contaminated leachate, the Gniewino landfill has been designed. It has a leachate collection system to collect leachate by a drainage system into retention tanks. The purpose of the research was to assess the groundwater quality near the Gniewino landfill and to analyze the temporal and spatial diversity of contamination. The authors analyzed the results of groundwater monitoring of the Gniewino landfill and compared the concentrations of selected indicators between the period of the monitoring system construction and the recent times. The study showed that the groundwater quality in the Gniewino landfill area was variable in each sampling well and was changing in time.

Opis:
Groundwater quality study was conducted in the Drini basin situated in the northern part of the Albanian territory. The objective of this study was to identify the quality of groundwater in four different well-defined monitoring sites. Groundwater is vital for the population and is considered to be subject to continuous exploitation with high growth intensity, and permanent risk of pollution from natural and human activities. Contamination of groundwater occurs when synthetic products such as gasoline, oil, road salts and chemicals get into the groundwater and return it unsafe and unfit for human use. Groundwater monitoring was carried out according to a network, which aimed to include mainly the most intensive areas of exploitation and distribution in the aquifer. Samples were collected in two different months of June and October in four monitoring drilling sites and were analysed for those key indicators defined by the rules and procedures for the drafting and implementation of the national programme of environmental monitoring in Albania. The study results reveal that geological formation, human activities as well as environmental conditions affect groundwater quality. Complete chemical analysis revealed that the groundwater in this area results in medium hardness, has good physico-chemical properties, local pollution is encountered, and there is no massive pollution of the basin. They are waters with low mineralisation. Further, they are neutral waters, which meet the allowed norm for drinking water. The pollution displayed is occasional, as the presence of NH4+ and NO2- are isolated cases, manifested mainly by the non-application of areas of strictness and sanitary protection around the drill and the small cover of the subaxillary layer. The analysis performed for microelements shows that the content of some heavy metals is below the maximum allowed amount; this demands serious future attention to the density of the network and the monitoring frequency in this basin. The risk of pollution in the Drini basin is high due to the small protective cover, especially in the source of Dobrac. Intensive exploitation can lead to the mixing of fresh water with water with high mineralisation. The concentration of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Na+, K+ and Cl− in the water samples known as the major pollutants from the urban transport sector, has shown that the values are within the water quality standard. The low concentration of these pollutants was due to the distance of the drilling sites from the roads in these areas.

Opis:
In the recharge area of the Tursko B well field supplying water to the town of Pleszew, the contamination plume that flows towards the wells has been evidenced. The intensive groundwater contamination is caused by infiltration of surface water from ameliorative channels, which receive water from agricultural drainage systems as well as treated wastewater from the Goluchow sewage treatment plant. Hydrochemical research shows that drainage water is heavily polluted as a result of agricultural activities. It is reflected particularly by high concentration of nitrates. Their impact on groundwater is the most intense during the spring, when drainage systems transport considerable amounts of water. Treated wastewater from the Goluchow sewage treatment plant is characterized by very high concentrations of almost all dissolved components, but the most hazardous to the groundwater are periodically very high concentrations of ammonium and nitrate. The presented research shows the necessity of rebuilding the channel in order to reduce the amount of infiltrating wastewater.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wybranych parametrów jakościowych próbek wód gruntowych i powierzchniowych, pobieranych w latach 2011–2012 w pięciu towarowych, rodzinnych gospodarstwach rolnych, położonych na terenie Żuław Elbląskich.
This paper presents results of analyses of selected surface and ground water parameters made in 2011–2012 in several market family farms located in Żuławy Elbląskie. Potential risk of water pollution by reactive forms of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium was estimated on the background of economical-productive factors including the efficiency of macronutrient utilization in market production with the use of method called “at the farm’s gate budget”. Average nutrient surplus in farms was 109–190 kg N·ha-1, 2–38 kg P·ha-1 and 3–103 kg K·ha-1. The majority of ground water samples contained excessive amounts of ammonium nitrogen often exceeding 2.33 mg·dm-3 N-NH4. Similarly high were concentrations of potassium that exceeded 20 mg K·dm-3 in most of ground water samples. Measured phosphate concentrations did not exceed 1.63 mg·dm-3 P-PO4. No excess of nitrates or extreme pH values were recorded in analysed ground waters. The quality of surface waters sampled exclusively from mid-field drainage ditches raises some objections. Periodical worsening of surface water quality was caused by high concentrations of ammonium nitrogen and phosphates which often exceeded 1.00 mg P-PO4dm-3.
