This article presents in the first part the concept of Schelerian phenomenology of religion and claims that pre‐phenomenon of Holiness could not be take in the bracket of existence as usual because the religious act raised by Holiness itself is an heteronomic act of God‐Holiness realized in the man and giving evidence of the existence of its Reasoner. In the second part of this article two types of unity are presented: unity due to joint feeling with others (unmittelbares Mitfühlen — “Two parents stand beside the dead body of a beloved child”) and unity due to co‐operation of personal acts (Mitvollzug — “I live, yet not I, but Christ in me”). This two types of unities present the Other in a primordial way, which launched several criticism against Max Scheler’s mysticism. Phenomenology of act and mysticism seems to merge together in one point, calling Maieutic Birth, a their method becomes enactment of meaning (Vollzugstheorie der Bedeutung — Karl Friedrich Gethmann).

This presentation examines B. P. Bowne’s view of God. God is an active and self-determining being. Nature is understood by Bowne as activated by the intellect and will of God. Bowne stated that each person has the attributes of awareness and self-awareness, freedom and the ability to act, and self-control – in a perfect way possessed only by God. Bowne’s theistic personalism shows the human person to be a spiritual being, ultimately deriving from God, the Most-High Person.

The article aims to show that the connection of the metaphysics of being with Aristotle’s philosophy of nature allows for the composition of anthropology per se which involves the concept of a person as it emerges from the two fundamental issues: the metaphysical approach to a person ontologically connected with nature, and the concept of a person as relation. The article concludes with the claim that, in Thomistic anthropology, the supernatural world of persons coexists with the natural world of persons who are subject to cosmic order and legal relations. Thus, a person’s inclusion in the framework of legal relations and its ontological liberation in the supernatural field open up the way for the social acknowledgement of the human person.

The theory of values by Max Scheler became one of the most influential theories in XX century. However, the term ‘value’ is insufficient to build a particular moral behavior. Under the Scheler’s concept of ‘value’ there is the concept of ‘love’ by Saint Augustine of Hippo. Thus, if the Augustinian influence is followed, one may go beyond the lacks of the Scheler’s theory. Through these lines one can trace the way leading from the concept of Christian love to the concepts of value, love and person by Scheler. There is, however, a question whether it is possible to teach values. According to the author if values are to be taught, the education of values is to be preceded by teaching love as a virtue.

The thought of the Cappadocian fathers is linked to the Trinitarian nature of God. They strive for formulating a definition of divine person. The extent of the Cappadocian notion of person covers two other important ideas which refer to being someone: an ability to be in a fraternal relation with others, and a disposition to enter such a relation voluntarily. The Christian idea of divine person also implicates a concept of infinite dignity. The authoress shows that at the grassroots of the Western concept of person, associated with human inalienable rights, there are ceratin metaphysical intuitions.

Artykuł prezentuje podejście Paula Tillicha do kwestii wiary w Boga. Nie jest to ujęcie apologetyczne, ale takie, które sytuuje ją na poziomie egzystencji każdej istoty ludzkiej. Autor dowodzi, iż pojęcie wiary, Boga, pytania i troski tworzą wspólny horyzont rozumienia osoby ludzkiej. Człowiek jest istotą stawiającą pytania, włączając w to pytanie o Boga i świętość. Jego istotą jest wierzyć, ale wiarą popadającą ciągle w niepewność, ale także zaufanie, powierzenie się Tajemnicy. Każda osoba jest ukonstytuowana przez wiarę, fenomen odsłaniający egzystencję, jako przeżywająca pytanie. Artykuł przekonująco dowodzi, iż wspomniane wymiary dotyczą ostatecznych i nieredukowalnych aspektów ludzkiej istoty.
Through a close reading of Paul Tillich this article argues that the human being asks questions because its existence is a question, pensive concern with the meaning of its own being. A chief task, then, is to explicate the impossibility of absolute despair and absolute apathy. Even despair and doubt witness to a concern with meaning insofar as it mourns its absence. In this respect, every person has a `god,' namely something regarded as holy, something concerning the individual ultimately or, in Tillich's terms, an object of ultimate concern. Even the atheist who dedicates her life to refuting belief in God testifies to this as her ultimate concern. Ultimate concern is thus Tillich's definition of faith: subjection to the holy. The author convincingly shows that faith, the question of and ultimate concern with the holy, is the primary phenomenon constituting human existence as a human person. Faith is the condition of personhood.

Kluczową tezą artykułu jest ta, iż człowiek to nie tylko ciało, ale przede duch połączony z ciałem. Kiedy ciało osłabnie, i sił jest coraz mniej człowiek, złożenie materii i ducha, nadal może być aktywny, użyteczny dla rodziny, dla najbliższych i dla społeczeństwa. Artykuł „Starość jako zadanie dla człowieka - inspiracje w nauczaniu Jana Pawła II” podzielony został na na pięć etapów. W pierwszym przeprowadzimy charakterystykę antropologicznych poglądów Jana Pawła II. W drugim przedstawimy diagnozę społeczną ludzi starych. W trzecim przybliżymy co Kościół robi na rzecz ludzi trzeciego wieku. W czwartym naszkicujemy zadania dzieci i wnuków; a w piątym skupimy się nad powinnościami ludzi starych. Refleksje zakończymy przytoczeniem słów pocieszenia Jana Pawła II skierowane do ludzi starszych podczas spotkania w Monachium.
The principle of this paper is that a human being is not merely a body, but the spirit connected with the body. Thus when the body goes weak, and human power diminishes, an individual, as a combination of matter and spirit, may still be active, useful for the family, the loved ones, and for the society. The article “Old age as a man’s task – inspirations of John Paul II’s Teachings” has been divided into five stages. In the first part we conduct anthropological views of John Paul II. In the second we present a social diagnosis of the elderly. In the third we approach what the Church is doing for the people of the third age. In the fourth we discuss the tasks of children and grandchildren; and in the fifth we focus on the duties of the elderly. Our reflections end with John Paul II’s words of comfort addressed to the elderly during a meeting in Munich.

Joseph Ratzinger w autobiografii zatytułowanej Moje życie pisze o swoim spotkaniu z personalizmem, który potem odnalazł jako jasno wyeksponowany u Marcina Bubera: „Stało się [spotkanie z personalizmem] dla mnie istotnym duchowym przeżyciem. Personalizm ten kojarzył mi się mimowolnie z myślą Augustyna, który w Wyznaniach wyszedł mi niejako naprzeciw z całą swoją ludzką namiętnością i głębią”. Od tamtego momentu cała teologia Ratzingera zaczęła emanować personalizmem. Jest on przekonany, że „Wiara chrześcijańska nie przedstawia jakiejś idei, lecz Osobę” (Wprowadzenie w chrześcijaństwo). Personalistyczne myślenie Josepha Ratzingera uwypukla się bardziej, gdy Ratzinger analizuje sakrament chrztu oraz treść wyznania wiary w Jednego a zarazem trójosobowego Boga. „U początku bycia chrześcijaninem nie ma decyzji etycznej czy jakiejś idei, ale natomiast spotkanie z wydarzeniem, z Osobą” (Deus Caritas est 1). Joseph Ratzinger/Benedykt XVI podkreśla znaczenie osoby w całej swojej teologii. Przedstawia on jednak personalizm w najczystszej postaci, szczególnie kiedy bada koncepcję osoby pod kątem trynitologicznym i chrystologicznym.
Joseph Ratzinger, in his autobiography entitled My Life, writes about his encounter with personalism, later found explained by Martin Buber, as: “A spiritual experience that left an essential mark, even if I spontaneously associated such personalism with the thought of St. Augustin, who in his Confessions had struck me with the power of all his human passion and depth.” From that moment on, all his theology emanates with personalism. He is convinced that “Christian faith does not relate to an idea but to a Person” (Intruduction to Christianity). The personalistic thinking of Joseph Ratzinger becomes evident when he describes the essence of the Sacrament of Baptism as well as the contents of the profession of faith in One and – at the same time – Three-personed God. “Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person” (Deus Caritas est, 1). Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI underlines the significance of person in all his theology by focusing on the concept of person in Trinitology and Christology, in which he develops a personalism in the purest form.

The aim of this analysis is to show the categorical imperative as the cornerstone of human dignity and form of revelation of God in the work of Immanuel Kant and Karol Wojtyla. The suspicious and distant attitude of Christian philosophers, as well as the Catholic Church compared to Kant has a long history. To this day there are only a few researches that analyse from this point of view (Kantian influences) the philosophical thinking of Karol Wojtyla. Though Kant identified the question of God as the cardinal question of our abstract rationality, he believed in God and future life, even in his lifetime he was underestimated, misunderstood and treated with hostility. The experience of duty is”ratio conoscendi” of freedom in Kant and Wojtyla. For the two thinkers the question of freedom is the basic category of there philosophies. Through which authority moral law challenges the human being? Kant and Wojtyla, both philosophers comprehend the highest authority as divine power which formulated the moral law before man. The “holy lawmaker” – God – reveals himself in the human act.

The authoress claims that the experience of the man’s own existence is genetically earlier than all other types of cognition. It can be called the man’s primordial, basic, radical, fundamental experience: the experience of human existence immersed in the world. It constitutes a foundation and place wherein the problem of God arises in the most natural and spontaneous way, and where the very roots of the problem are to be sought. She emphasizes that it is extremely important that the affirmation of the man’s existence is achieved along with cognitional contact with extra-subjective reality whose affirmation allows for man to more deeply penetrate the affirmation of his own existence, to know his existence as connected with other personal and non-personal beings—and ultimately connected with the existence of a higher and stronger reality, the reality of God. These are not man’s impressions or desires, but facts stated by man. The authoress concludes that it is human experience which reveals man as a correlate of a higher, stronger and transcendent reality. Man thus turns out to be a religious being—homo religiosus.

The considerations of the article circulate around the Christian hope, its loss and conditions of restoration. The foundation of these reflections as its source for understanding of hope contained in the Benedict XVII Encyclical Spe salvi. Hope concerns what is given in faith, which is proof of things that will finally come, and therefore hope requires the recognition of two objectivities – now given and eschatological. The next elements of hope are the subject („homo viator”), directed towards Transcendence, tension and effort of the will and participation in the community. Factors of deconstruction may concern one or all elements of the structure of hope. The article discusses the phenomenon of deconstruction of hope in various dimensions of contemporary culture. The final reflection focuses on the restoration of hope. This can be done contrary to the deconstruction way, mainly by regaining the faith. The footing of this turn is the indication of St. Augustine - to believe in God one must first believe in God, that is, among others, to realize the common good, recognize the personal dignity of the man and the transcendent value of human life.

In his deliberations John Paul II, taking under consideration the description of creation of man, takes up the important issue of man's loneliness. The problem has an anthropological character. It is Yahweh who recognized that the first human being (a man) is lonely despite his very close relation with the Creator. This is why God brought into being another human being (a woman). The man then sang a song of admiration of the woman. However, creating a woman did not change the situation that God considered wrong for mankind. The Pope points to man's unconquerable, ontological loneliness resulting from the person's subsistence and subjectivity. The loneliness contains a hidden message. The first married couple mutually complementing each other by strength of the specific mystery of the human being's unity and the duality of the sex comes to their common fall. This event reveals the weakness of human reference that is based on ontic loneliness and contingency of man. An imperfect creature cannot give perfect support to God's image that is craving for perfection. Appearance of another human being, awakening the feeling of gratitude for the gift of her, and at the same time of disappointment with insufficiency of this gift, leads by the way of history of salvation and revelation towards recognizing the final rest and happiness only in God. As a consequence, inter-human loves appear to be a real panacea for personal loneliness, however, not „in itself” but they doubtless point to Absolute Love, that is to God as the only fulfillment of man's longings.

The article considers the grounds for man’s fulfillment through his union with God. It analyzes the problem through the writings of St. John of the Cross. The analysis is focused on: (1) the need for accommodation of bodily elements to the soul in man, (2) the ways of knowing God as the highest degree of qualities present imperfectly in man, and experiencing God as the One who supports man’s life, grants him His graces, and loves him, (3) the adaptational relationship between man and God. The author concludes that man’s union with God transforms him into God through his personal (i.e., conscious and voluntary) participation.

In the second part of her arguing for contemplative listening as a fundamental act of the new evangelization, the author turns to the theological perspective of Jesus Christ as the eternal Listener and, thus, focuses upon his act of listening, which is the unique personal form of his eternal divinity. The author addresses the following issues. Granted that listening has to do with obedient readiness, how can one say it is in the eternalSon, who, being God, would seem to be naturally exempt from obedience? In order to answer this question, the author looks at the Balthasarian “enfleshment” of Thomas’ notion of the divine persons as subsistent relations. In brief, to say that the Son is the subsistent relation of sonship means that the Son receives himself from the Father. But this self-reception implies, the author argues, an obedient readiness. And, since the Son is Word, this obedient readiness translates into a “listening.” The Son is not only the eternal Word. He is also the eternal listener of the Word he is. Within the Godhead, each person is his relation (of “opposition”) to the others and there is no difference between the person and his action. For example, the Son is his relation of sonship to the Father. But, one might ask, how could one speak of the Son’s obedience? How does one avoid subordinationism? The key is to see how the Son’s possession of divinity is compatible with a reception of it. If the Father is the “source and origin of all divinity,” the Son does, in fact, receive his divinity from the Father while, at the same time, he is co-equal and co-eternal with the Father. That the Father generates the Son does not mean, as Arius asserted, that there was a time when the Son was not. Rather, the Son always possesses his divine sonship as being given fromthe Father, while the Father possesses divinity as being given away. Divinity is compatible with relationality in the mode of reception. In the Godhead, reception is perfection. There are a number of texts from Thomas that the author presents in favor of this argument. Having established that reception is perfection in the Godhead, the author develops how this receptivity encompasses obedience and listening. For, in his receiving, the Son performs an act that, by an intrinsic analogy, one may describe as the taking of the gift of the Father into himself. In this sense, the Son is obedient to the “sense” of the Father’s self-gift. But, in the case of the Son, he isthe gift. Not only that, he isthe gift as Word. This suggests, as the author argues, that the obedience that characterizes him as a divine person is something intrinsically analogous to listening. Here, then, we find the ultimate theological reason that we are listeners: we are listeners because we are created on the model of Christ, the eternal Listener.
