Opis:
In this study, cassava starch cross-linked using sodium trimetaphosphate was used as basic material to prepare the preservation coating agent. The addition levels of β-cyclodextrin, phytic acid and glycerol were optimized by response surface methodology with the comprehensive index of oil permeability (OP) and the water vapor permeability (WVP) of starch-based coating. The optimal formulation of the cross-linked cassava starch-based coating was as follows: 3 g/100 g cassava cross-linked starch, 0.7 g/100 g β-cyclodextrin, 0.5 g/100 g phytic acid, and 0.5 g/100 g glycerol. The preservation coating solution prepared by the optimized formula was applied to the postharvest storage of ‘Shatangju’ mandarins. The coating treatment effectively slowed down the decline of firmness during storage for 20 days at room temperature, reduced the decay rate (by 111.73%) and weight loss rate (by 43.40%), and inhibited the postharvest respiration (by 42.06%) of fruit. The soluble solid content, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid content of the coated ‘Shatangju’ mandarins were higher 1.32 times, 1.55 times, and 1.52 times, respectively, compared with the corresponding indexes of the control fruits. All these results indicate that the coating treatment could effectively reduce the loss of nutrients, delay the wilting and decay, prolong the shelf life after harvest, and improve the commercial value of ‘Shatangju’ mandarins.

Opis:
Polymers derived from renewable sources which are additionally subject to degradation processes are currently an interesting alternative to conventional polymers of petrochemical origin. One of such polymers is poly(lactic acid) (PLA), which can be used in the packaging, textile and also medical industries. Its great advantage is the susceptibility to biodegradation and the nontoxicity of the degradation products. Because of high brittleness and stiffness, the modification of PLA is necessary to improve its plastic deformability, which can expand the new application possibilities. As part of the research work, the modification of PLA by plasticisation was undertaken to improve its plastic deformability properties. The low molecular mass esters from the citrate group and glycerol triacetate were used. The samples extruded from plasticised polymer were characterised using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Gel Permeation Chromatography/Size Exclusion Chromatography (GPC/SEC). The mechanical properties and melt flow rate after modification were determined. The aim of the research was to determine the relationship between the structure of a plasticiser and its ability to reduce the interactions in the polymer chain in order to develop an optimal polymerplasticiser arrangement. Based on this research, there was no relationship between the efficiency of the plasticisation process and the increasing molecular mass of the plasticiser. The additional chemical (acetyl) group in the plasticiser also does not increase the efficiency of the PLA plasticisation process. In the next steps of the research, functional forms will be produced, i.e. fibers, films, and fittings from the selected polymer-plasticiser systems.

Opis:
Nitrocellulose (NC) with a semi-rigid polymer chain is one of the typical traditional cellulose derivatives. Optimization of its mechanical properties is of great significance for improving the performance of NC-based propellants. The nitrate glycerol ether cellulose (NGEC) was prepared by introducing glycerol onto the unreacted, free hydroxyl groups on NC through a three-step process (alkalization, etherification, and nitration). The effects of both the nitration process and the degree of etherification on the NGEC nitrogen content were qualitatively explored. By adding NGEC into modified double-base propellant, a standard engine grain with a diameter of 50 mm was produced by adsorption, granulation, and screw extrusion. The heat of explosion, and other physical properties of NGEC were characterized and the variation in mechanical properties and performance after storage for 6 years was investigated. The results indicated that the sensitivity was improved, and the stability was slightly decreased on increasing the nitrogen content of NGEC. Compared with NC containing similar nitrogen levels, NGEC exhibited a slightly higher heat of explosion, similar compatibility, and lower sensitivity. Additionally, the solubility of NGEC in ethanol/ether exceeded 99.7%. Through branched-chain chemical modification, the glycerol ether played a significant role in achieving internal plasticization among the cellulose chains.

Opis:
Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) is a polyester that is particularly useful for tissue engineering appli- cations. Many researchers have focused on the application and characterization of materials made from PGS. Synthesis is often superficially described, and the prepolymer is not characterized before crosslinking. Considering the different functionality of each monomer (glycerine – 3, sebacic acid – 2), materials with a branched structure can be obtained before the crosslinking process. Branched struc- tures are not desirable for elastomers. In this work, method to obtain linear PGS resins is presented. Moreover, synthesis was optimized with the use of the Design of Experiments method for minimizing the degree of branching and maximizing the molecular weight. The process was described via mathe- matical models, which allows to the association of process parameters with product properties. In this work ca. 1kDa and less than 10% branched PGS resin was produced. This resin could be used to make very flexible elastomers because branching is minimized.

Opis:
Gracilaria sp. is well known as one kind of species of red algae. The major component of polysaccharide in this alga is agar that mostly used for making thin film. In this study, the Gracilaria sp.-based thin film had been prepared using two plasticizers (glycerol and sorbitol, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt %), and chitosan (1, 2, and 3 wt %). The FT-IR analysis confirmed the interaction that happened among the component of the mixture of Gracilaria sp., plasticizers, and chitosan was based on hydrogen bonding due to the presence of -OH and -NH2 groups. The plasticizers and chitosan concentration have significant role to the mechanical properties of Gracilaria sp.-based thin film. The optimum concentration of plasticizers and chitosan based on mechanical testing result was found at 0.2 and 3.0 wt %, respectively. At those concentrations, the thin film that prepared with sorbitol showed the highest mechanical properties. Other characterizations, i.e. TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and WVP (Water Vapor Permeability) also brought the same result. The antimicrobial properties of the as prepared thin film in the presence of chitosan on agar medium and as a packaging on selected bread showed the Gracilaria sp.-based thin films was able to inhibit the growth of microbes. This antimicrobial activity can be used to declare the potential of Gracilaria sp.-based thin film as a new active food packaging.
Gracilaria sp. to dobrze znany gatunek krasnorostów. Najlepsze właściwości mechaniczne uzyskano z zastosowaniem 0,2% mas plastyfikatora i 3% mas. chitozanu. Badania metodami analizy termograwimetrycznej, skaningowej mikroskopii elektronowej i oznaczona wartość przepuszczalności pary wodnej (WVP) potwierdziły te ustalenia. Wykazano, że otrzymane folie hamowały rozwój drobnoustrojów, mogą więc być stosowane jako nowe aktywne opakowania do żywności.

Socio-economic changes generate the need for the rationalization of economic processes. The risk of failure to achieve the appropriate recycling level by Poland in 2020 required by the EU gives rise to the necessity of the analysis and improvement of processes carried out in the framework of the waste management system. The municipal waste collection comprising transport processes to the indicated locations and processes of waste collection from waste collection points (WCP) has a significant influence on the achieved recycling level. Therefore, the authors attempted to assess the municipal waste collection process in Wrocław. The assessment was carried out based on irregularities in notifications related to waste collection sent by the residents of Wrocław to a company managing the waste collection. The application of the indicator of notifications per resident and the indicator of notifications per WCP as well as carrying out the analysis of time dependences of notifications number enabled the authors to identify the areas in Wrocław characterized by a high intensity of notifications and the reasons for this phenomenon.

Opis:
In this study, the environmental impacts of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) treatment and its conversion in anaerobic digestion to glycerol tertiary butyl ether (GTBE) were assessed. The production process is a part of the innovative project of a municipal waste treatment plant. The BioRen project is funded by the EU’s research and innovation program H2020. A consortium has been set up to implement the project and to undertake specific activities to achieve the expected results. The project develops the production of GTBE which is a promising fuel additive for both diesel and gasoline. It improves engine performance and reduces harmful exhaust emissions. At the same time, the project focuses on using non-recyclable residual organic waste to produce this ether additive. The aim of this paper is the evaluation through Life Cycle Assessment of the environmental impact GTBE production in comparison with a production of other fuels. To quantify the environmental impacts of GTBE production, the ILCD 2011 Midpoint+ v.1.10 method was considered. The study models the production of GTBE, including the sorting and separation of municipal solid waste (MSW), pre-treatment of organic content, anaerobic fermentation, distillation, catalytic dehydration of isobutanol to isobutene, etherification of GTBE with isobutene and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The results indicate that unit processes: sorting and hydrothermal carbonization mostly affect the environment. Moreover, GTBE production resulted in higher environmental impact than the production of conventional fuels.
W artykule przedstawiono ocenę wpływu na środowisko konwersji frakcji stałej komunalnych odpadów organicznych (MSW) w procesie fermentacji beztlenowej do eteru tert butylowego glicerolu (GTBE). Proces produkcji stanowi część innowacyjnego projektu instalacji do przetwarzania odpadów komunalnych. Projekt BioRen finansowany jest w ramach unijnego programu badań i innowacji „Horyzont 2020”. W celu realizacji projektu i podjęcia konkretnych działań zmierzających do osiągnięcia oczekiwanych rezultatów powołano konsorcjum.

Glycerine as waste from production accounts for about 10% of the obtained amount of biodiesel. It is a very attractive substance for the industry, however, currently the industry is not able to absorb such a large amount of glycerine produced during the production of fuel. Therefore, one should look for other ways of disposing of glycerol with simultaneous benefit in the form of energy yield or useful products / semi-finished products. The development of glycerine is necessary due to the continuous development of the biofuel market. In the near future, surplus glycerine may pose serious problems in the growth of biodiesel production. The publication presents the results of scientific research on the use of liquid technical glycerine and its processing products in the gasification process, as engine fuel.

The paper examines results of thermal analysis biocomponents, biofuels in reference to commercial light fuel oil. The biocomponents were: glycerol from biorafinery, by product of the transesterfication process with methanol of higher fatty acids of rapeseed oil, foreshot and fusel, waste from a distillery. The purpose of tests was to compare thermal properties of biofuels obtained with the use of biocomponents in reference to fuel oil. Thermal analysis was carried out by the TG/DSC method by TG-DTA/DSC machine produced by SETARAM. The measurements were carried out in oxygen, in the temperature range from 17 to 800°C, with a constant temperature increase of 10 degrees per minute. The obtained values enabled a comparative analysis of the effects of chemical and thermal transformations, which occur during the combustion of fuels of a different composition. From all considered biofuels, the most energy-efficient was two-component, one-glycerol with methanol, characterized by an exothermic peak with the largest thermal effect.

Opis:
This study aims to determine the effects of the addition of the best glycerol concentration as a plasticizer on edible film alginate for tensile strength test, thickness test, percent elongation, and transparency test. The research method used was experimental with a Completely Randomized Design consisting of five treatments and three replications. The treatment of the addition of glycerol concentration was 0.3% based on the volume of solution, 0.5% based on the volume of solution, 0.7% based on the volume of solution, 0.9% based on the volume of the solution, and 1.1% based on the volume of the solution. Observations on the physical characteristics of edible films include thickness, tensile strength, percent elongation, and transparency. The results of the study of physical characteristics of thickness, tensile strength, percent elongation, and transparency concluded that the addition of glycerol concentration in edible films as much as 0,9% was the best treatment based on Japanesse Industrial Standard (JIS) with an average value of 0,094 mm thickness, tensile strength 8,25 MPa, elongation percent value 10,83%, and transparency value is 1,86.
