Opis:
Over recent decades, the Arctic region has been subjected to rapid climate change stemming from global warming. The advance of Atlantic waters to high latitudes is notable. The increased abundance of fish, such as cod (Gadus morhua) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), has been reported near the western coast of Spitsbergen and entering fjords together with Atlantic waters. This study used multifrequency acoustics to measure fish distribution and abundance in 2013–2014 in two Arctic fjords, the colder Hornsund, which is typically of Arctic character, and the warmer Kongsfjorden, which is more of Atlantic character. The study revealed a bimodal fish size distribution with larger fish in the deep parts of fjords, and smaller fish distributed in more shallow waters. An evident increase in the abundance of large fish, most probably Atlantic cod, was observed in Hornsund and especially in Kongsfjorden in 2014 in comparison to 2013. The intense inflow of Atlantic water on the shelf in 2014 is suggested as the explanation for this phenomenon.

Opis:
An important question stated in the presented paper is: Could rotifers be the indicators of climate change in the Antarctic environments? Rotifers are one of the most important components of the invertebrate fauna of the Antarctic freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. However, investigations of their distribution, diversity and an ecological role in the environment have been widely neglected, mainly due to the methodological and taxonomical difficulties. During the investigations 176 species of rotifers were found, including the endemic and cosmopolitan species. Their existence is directly proportional to microvariations of humidity factor. Scientists still have poor knowledge about the occurrence of rotifer species in recently studied habitats e.g. cryoconite holes, nunataks or soil. Probably rotifers could be the indicators of climate change in the Antarctic freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems but more investigations and monitoring studies are needed.

Opis:
One of the effects of globalization is the increasing number of transnational ties that central governments not only ceased to control but also ceased to participate in; therefore, in recent decades, cities have been increasingly motivated to respond to international issues and initiate various contacts with foreign economic, cultural, and political centres. This article examines practices of city diplomacy in light of the current climate crisis. Albeit cities could be in conflict with their central government, they are executing the global climate agenda. Nonetheless, how do we frame cities’ autonomous activities in the global governance agenda? The article seeks to determine whether the framework of hybrid multilateralism is the niche for cities to assume the role of the central government in defending common global values such as preservation of the environment when the state fails to do so. Based on a dataset consisting of various subnational initiatives responding to climate change, we suggest a remarkable growth in the pledges to the international climate agreements’ commitments involving many subnational actors. Through these pledges, cities enter the international negotiations with various partners under hybrid policy architecture. Cities hold an enormous potential to influence the global conversation on climate change agenda. Furthermore, we conclude that cities are taking on the states’ role in global issues when they identify the inadequacy of the central governments’ action. Their conflict position forces them to carry out autonomous activities and fosters the new phenomenon of hybrid multilateralism.
Konfliktowa pozycja zmusza je do prowadzenia autonomicznych działań i sprzyja nowemu zjawisku hybrydowego multilateralizmu.

Opis:
The main focus of my research lies within the psychology of human development, especially in late adulthood. There are many reasons why psychologists are interested in climate change. One of the fathers of modern medicine, Hippocrates, proclaimed that the climate affects the mood (liquids) existing in the human body. I wrote an article about climate change and its relationship to the psychological functioning of people in old age. As we enter adulthood, the new generation will severely experience increasingly extreme weather events. Already this phenomenon is more frequent than several decades ago and takes a deadly toll. Heat waves will be more frequent and so the children and older people will be often exposed to that phenomenon. It may have a detrimental effect on those in the declining period of their lives. In my opinion, an important question is to what extent modern living should (in a moral sense) limit the current consumption of many goods because of the duty to care for the standard of living and its quality and the interests of people who will live in the future.

The world we live in has witnessed some drastic environmental imbalance in recent times. These imbalances have threatened sustainable development- which is the ultimate goal of man-environment relationship. This paper reviews the causes and effects of climate change on man and his environment with a view to using science education to solve the problems posed by climate change. Literature shows that climate change results mainly from human activities such as rapid deforestation for agricultural and industrial purposes, carbon dioxide emission from fossil fuel burning, carbon dioxide emission from burning gasoline for transportation, usage of chemical fertilizers on croplands and methane emission from animals, agriculture and arctic sea beds. The consequences of these activities include global warming, ozone layer depletion, greenhouse effect, rising sea level and acid rain. It is recommended here that the whole educational process be re-packaged to emphasize science education as a panacea for sustainable development. The argument here is that the educational institutions are the best media for the inculcation of proper morals and values. It is also recommended that teacher education programmes should allocate more funds to research in, and teaching of science in schools.

Opis:
Devastating flash floods and uncontrollable soil erosion, largely fallout of the effects of climate change, have been taking their toll on Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Apart from disrupting the ecosystem, their overwhelming effects are felt in the agricultural sector as farmlands are washed away. The media are expected to enlighten the residents of FCT, Abuja, about the impact of climate change. They have to be aware of global warming and its effects. Hence, this article sought to determine the level of awareness about the existence of climate change discourse among the residents of the FCT, Abuja; to ascertain respondents’ perception about the media creating enough awareness around climate change and how it exacerbates flooding, and to confirm if the press is mobilising residents enough on how to mitigate flooding. The study was anchored on Status Conferral and Media Development theories. A questionnaire and question guide served as instruments for data collection. Findings showed that the FCT residents’ awareness level about climate change was generally low, whereas improvement on the awareness level will result in activities that reduce flash floods; they perceived the media as not creating adequate awareness about climate change and educating the populace enough on how to mitigate the flash flood problem. In their sensitisation exercises, the media should partner with relevant government agencies and traditional rulers to educate residents on safety issues, particularly human activities that tend to exacerbate flash floods in the area.

Forests are one the main natural factors that regulate and determine climate, weather patterns and amount of CO2 of an area. With rapid industrialization and rapid urbanization there is a significant increase in deforestation and as a consequence rise in global mean surface temperatures. Rapid and unchecked cut down of forest cover has resulted in some of the worst disasters during the last decades. This paper focuses on studying the role of deforestation, its influence on climate change phenomena and its consequences in Pakistan.

Differential biomass and carbon stocks were investigated in vegetation of natural and artificial ecosystems in Akwa Ibom State. Three vegetation plots were used for each site. In each plot, three belt transects were laid and in each transect, vegetation were sampled systematically in ten 10 m × 10 m quadrat. Vegetation variables such as DBH, height of species were measured while their ages were estimated. The biomass and carbon stocks of species were estimated standardized allometric functions. The result revealed a total of 15, 30, 19 and 19 species in the mangrove, forest, arboretum and orchard, respectively. The biomass allocation in the various woody species components followed this decreasing order; stem > branches > leaves. The standing biomass in the ecosystems followed this decreasing order; forest (179.14 tons) > arboretum (53.94 tons) mangrove (33.03 tons) > orchard (17.14 tons). The carbon stock in the vegetation also followed this decreasing order: forest (89.65 tons) > arboretum (28.51 tons) > mangrove (16.52 tons) > orchard (8.57). Species such as Elaeis guineensis (in mangrove), Coula edulis (in forest), Temarindus indica (in arboretum) and Anacardium occidentalis (in orchard) had the highest values for biomass and sequestered carbon while species such as Alchornea cordifolia (in mangrove), Maesoboytra dusenii (in forest), Rauwolfia vomitoria (in arboretum) and Anthocleista vogelli (in orchard) had the least standing biomass and sequestered carbon. Conclusively, these results have practical implications in environmental monitoring and management, afforestation, forest protection and conservation, climate change and global warming.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to determine the mechanisms of climate change impact on the yield of the main exportoriented crops in the agro-climatic zones of Ukraine. The study of the problem of changing the acreage of the main export-oriented crops was conducted according to the data of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine on the time horizon 2000-2018 in the following order: first, the dynamics of the change of the acreage under corn, sunflower and wheat by the agro-climatic zones of Ukraine was analyzed; secondly, the trends of yield changes of these crops were investigated based on the increase in the difference in yields between the northern and southern zones; and, finally, the temporal and spatial expansion in the area of crop propagation were investigated by applying the panel regression method. The findings obtained indicate that the applied models confirm the assumption of the effects of climate change on crop yield changes and the zones expansion in the northern direction. If the country’s wheat area can be considered stable (variation is insignificant), then the corn and sunflower areas have grown steadily under the influence of increasing demand from national and world markets. At the same time, the growing acreage under corn and sunflower occurred in all climatic zones. Stable expansion of corn crops in the north direction in all three agroclimatic zones of Ukraine has been statistically confirmed. The article presents the findings of empirical analysis, which confirm that if the boundaries of soil and climatic zones change, the conditions of growing crops and their yield will consequently change as well. Thus, based on current global forecasts, the impact of weather on Ukraine’s agriculture will increase, and the most negative effects can be expected in the Steppe zone, where the likelihood of weather and climate risks increases, requiring the development of adaptation and mitigation measures as well as exploitation of new potential opportunities that are being opened. Studies have shown that there is an expansion in crops to the north and a change in their pattern, including a significant increase in the area under corn.
