Opis:
According to one hypothesis, the exopods of extinct lamellipedian arthropods functioned as gills. To evaluate this hypothesis, the growth rates in Limulus polyphemus for total gill surface, average area per single gill lamella and number of gill lamellae are documented. The rates are compared with corresponding rates in decapod crustaceans in order to make deductions on morphological constraints in multi−foliated gills. The growth rates are given as allometric scaling exponents relative to the animal dry−body weight. The comparisons reveal that each allometric exponent is similar among examined species irrespective of differences in gill morphology or animal body plans. The numerical growth of lamellae obviously is much smaller than the growth of the total respiratory surface. To fulfill these trends in multi−foliated gills, the overall profile tends to become conical, with the result that the surface area is a couple of magnitudes larger at the base of the cone than at the tip. This geometrical shape appears to keep the numerical value of the total respiratory area (total lamellar surface) proportional to the cube of the total number of lamellae. The situation is entirely different in animals with lamellipedian exopods. In the latter, lamellae are slender structures carried in a straight row and, as exemplified by Naraoia, their increase in number during the growth is only half that required for the exopod lamellae to have functioned as an arthropod multi−foliated gill cone.

Opis:
Hairtail fish (Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus, 1758) are a major commodity of high economic value in Pangadaran. This study aims to determine the most selective fishing gear for hairtail fish commodities based on the frequency of hairtail fish length, the proportion of the main catch and by-catch in Pangandaran District. Data collected are primary and secondary data. Primary data consists of catch data and fish size length. The catch is obtained by collecting the results of landing fish with gill nets and beach seines. Fish size length data obtained through direct measurement when the fish is landed. Secondary data collected is data on capture fisheries production in Pangandaran District. Data analysis consisted of calculation of length size distribution and comparison of main and by-catches with fishing gears. The analysis was carried out with the help of Microsoft Excel software. The results of this study indicate that hairtail fish in Pangandaran District were captured using gill nets and beach seines. Based on the results of the research conducted on August 2018 until January 2019, it can be concluded that gill net fishing gears are more selective compared to beach seines based on several parameters observed, namely the length distribution and the proportion of main catch : by-catch. The results showed that the comparison of the length distribution of hairtail fish that was appropriately caught between gill nets and beach seines was 85.74% : 30,74%. Comparison of the proportion of main catch : by-catch between gill nets and beach seines was 52.38%: 23.57%.

Opis:
This study used light and electron microscopy to describe a myxosporean, polysporic, histozoic plasmodium infecting the gill filaments of the freshwater teleost, Semaprochilodus insignis, specimens of which were collected from the Trombetas River (Central Amazonian Region, Brazil). Ultrastructural analyses of the fish-infecting spores identified the parasite as Myxobolus insignis, an organism that occurs within whitish unequal-sized plasmodia located in the intralamellar epithelium of the gill. Based on the observed morphological and ultrastructural features of the plasmodia in this study three stages in the plasmodial evolution were distinguished, related to the sporogonic stages of Myxobolus insignis. The plasmodium walls were also found to constitute a number of layers of fibroblasts, surrounded by collagen fibres, which displayed different morphological arrangements according to the different phases of evolution. This represents the first time such ultrastructural features have been described in detail for Myxobolus insignis plasmodia and offers potentially significant points of comparison with plasmodia from other species of myxosporea.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of oral vaccination against Yersinia ruckeri based on oxidative stress biomarkers in different tissues of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum). Vaccine consisted of three Y. ruckeri strains (O1 serotype) that originated from rainbow trout cultured on the different farms, where fish exhibited clinical signs of enteric redmouth disease. Concentrated vaccine was incorporated in the fish food; treatment was delivers three times at one day intervals. One month after immunization, gills, hepatic and cardiac tissues were sampled. The vaccinated trout showed tissue-specific oxidative stress responses in the gills, liver, and heart. The gill tissue was the most sensitive to oxidative damage among the samples. Accumulation of oxidative stress biomarkers in the rainbow trout was tissue-specific with following accumulation: gills > heart > liver. These results suggest that the trout expressed tissue-specific oxidative stress mechanisms due to anti- Yersinia vaccine treatment. There were no statistically significant alterations in the activities of antioxidant defenses instead superoxide dismutase activity in the hepatic and cardiac tissue and glutathione peroxidase activity in the gills of vaccinated trout. Correlative analysis confirmed the role of catalase in the antioxidant defense in vaccinated trout. The oxidative stress biomarkers, i.e. content of oxidative modified proteins in the gills, and liver, and 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances level in the gills, and total antioxidant capacity in the liver, were sensitive to vaccination of trout against Y. ruckeri and may potentially be used as biomarkers in evaluating vaccine toxicity in rainbow trout.
Szczepione ryby wykazały specyficzne zmiany poziomu markerów stresu oksydacyjnego w skrzelach, wątrobie i sercu.

Opis:
The present analysis discusses the solute transport process in a steady 2D (axial and radial) laminar flow of blood through a permeable, finite length capillary. Blood is treated as a homogeneous Newtonian fluid and the solute is absorbed at the capillary wall with a linear irreversible reaction rate. The velocity profile is obtained by a regular perturbation technique, whereas the transport coefficients depicted by the Gill generalized dispersion model are solved numerically. A number of different scenarios are considered, namely transport with no-reaction, weak absorption, strong absorption, low filtration or high filtration, etc. In the initial stages, the temporal behaviour of the dispersion coefficient is identical to those cases when there is no radial velocity. For the combined effect of radial and axial velocities, however, the dispersion coefficient is lower for a high absorption rate than for a weak absorption rate. Diffusion is accelerated with higher values of filtration coefficient. Owing to the opposite effects of radial diffusion and radial velocity, the solute particles require more time to reach the steady state. The analysis finds applications in, for example, reactive nutrient and pharmacological transport in capillary hemodynamics.

Opis:
In this study, the total mercury concentration was determined in the muscles, liver and gills of six fish species (rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walb., carp Cyprinus carpio L., bream Abramis brama L., perch Perca fluviatilis L., ide Leuciscus idus L. and flounder Platichthys flesus L.). The fish were acquired from October to November 2012. Mercury was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry using thermal decomposition, compounds of mercury and amalgamation. The mercury content in fish organs reached 0.006-0.168 (in mg kgˉ¹ wet weight) in muscles, 0.001-0.027 in gills and 0.003-0.045 in the liver. The muscles of perch and ide had significantly more Hg compared to the other fish’s muscles (P≤0.05). The liver and gills of perch, ide and flounder contained more Hg than the same tissues of the other fish (P≤0.05). Generally, the highest Hg content was determined in muscles (except rainbow trout) (P≤0.05), whereas the lowest Hg content was found in gills (except perch) (P≤0.05). The content of Hg in gills of perch did not differ from the one in the liver (P>0.05). There was a positive correlation between the weight or length of a fish and the Hg concentration in its tissues, except for the length and Hg in the gills of carp. However, a statistically significant positive correlation between the body weight and the Hg levels in fish appeared only in the case of the organs of ide (P≤0.004) and muscles of carp (P≤0.038). The correlation between the factor condition and the content of Hg, albeit positive (0.106 < r < 0.811) except for the organs of flounder, was not statistically significant (P>0.05).
