The paper contains some partial findings of a comparative research on the chivalry romance Buovo d’Antona as printed in Bologna and in Venice in the 1480s in a number of different, yet quite similar one to another, incunables; and its ottava rima adaptation in yiddish-taytsh, made by Elye Bokher (Elia Levita) in Padua around 1507, and then published as Bovo-Buch in Isny, Württemberg, as late as 1541. Respectively, the narratives implicitly deliver two different ideologies, meant as consequent sets of socially shared convictions about the good living. In particular, the place of women in society and the family, or better said, the male representation thereof, substantially differs in the Yiddish adaptation compared to the Venetian original.

Digital games represent a new media form dominated by men, either as characters or as players. The perception of digital games as ‘Boys’ Fun’ has been denied by the latest research that points to the fact that women are increasingly accessing this medium. But the analysis of digital games shows that gender roles appear in this media as real-world stereotypes. It means that there is discrimination against women who often have a passive role, whether they appear as victims or as sexual objects. When they are not damsels in distress helplessly awaiting their saviour or playing heroines, then, they are most often portrayed as rebellious beauties with oversized dimensions. The subject of this paper is female representation in digital games. Authors used content analysis of 30 digital games with female protagonists, published at J Station, to examine the female gender roles in such digital games. The aim of the empirical study is to demonstrate that the elements of gender discrimination are present in digital games and that they can lead to the creation of harmful stereotypes against women.

The text describes the question of gender roles individualisation and their redefinition in relation to the notion of family. The analysis focuses on a new vision of fatherhood, i.e. a model that allows male care and sensitivity, which translates into active and committed child care (“caring masculinity”). The article is the analysis of selected Internet blogs and portals edited by men – source that will serve as material for reflection on both the condition of the father in contemporary Poland and dilemmas related to this.

The dance hall in Britain had always served as the best place for women to meet available men. During the First World War, three million men had died in the battlefields, which created a gross imbalance between the men-women ratio. However Barbara Cartland remembered her contemporaries who “reddened their lips and [went] out to dance when all they loved most [had] been lost” (1942). After the Battle of Somme, hostesses changed their invitations from “Miss–“ to “Miss– and partner,” implying that women would have to bring their own partners. Hence in the dance halls and clubs, traditional gender roles and rules of courtship had been reversed: instead of men courting women, women were now hankering after the few available men. On the other hand, at the Cafe Royal, the Ham Bone Club, and the Cave of Harmony, homosexual women could dance together unafraid, as the dearth of men provided the perfect alibi. In this paper I will examine how dance halls and dance clubs became spatial sites of transgression to prescribed gender roles; how these transgressions led to the blurring of class distinctions; the perception of the problem of homosexuality as arising from the dearth of men; and above all the enacting of gender as performance. To this end, I will refer to Rosamond Lehmann’s Invitation to the Waltz (1932) and Robert Graves’s and Alan Hodge’s The Long Week-End (1941).

This article investigates gender role reversal in the feminist revisionist Western fi lm by exploring the notion of reversal (peripeteia). First, it demonstrates features of classical Western on the example of John Ford’s The Searchers (1956). It establishes genre’s reliance on gendered binary opposites i.e. civilization/wilderness, individual/community, passive/active, and draws attention to language. Then it analyzes how these fundamental conventions are changed in more recent films and what do differences signal rhetorically. Distinction is made between The Missing (2013) with its clear focus on reversal of generic features associated with dominant masculinity, and The Ballad of Little Jo (1993) which addresses critical concepts of agency, gaze, and performative aspect of gender.
W niniejszym studium autorka bada odwrócenie ról płciowych w westernach określanych jako feministyczne i rewizjonistyczne, powołując się na Arystotelesowską perypetię. Podstawą analizy są cechy klasycznego westernu ukazane na przykładzie „Poszukiwaczy” (1956) w reżyserii Johna Forda. Przywołane zostają typowe dla gatunku nacechowane płciowo przeciwieństwa, tj. cywilizacja/natura, jednostka/wspólnota, bierny/aktywny bohater ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem języka. Analiza kluczowych konwencji gatunkowych w nowszych filmach i ich retorycznego znaczenia pozwala na skontrastowanie dwóch podejść. Podczas gdy film „Zaginione” (2003) skupia się przede wszystkim na odwróceniu gatunkowych tropów i konwencji kojarzonych z męską dominacją, „Ballada o małym Jo” (1993) zajmuje się kwestiami aktywnej podmiotowości, kategorią spojrzenie, performatywnością gender.

Traditional masculinity has been thoroughly explored in psychological research, but its counterpart, progressive masculinity, has undergone relatively little scientific investigation. To determine whether this lack of attention to or understanding of progressive masculinity is mirrored more largely in mainstream culture, we examined how men and women conceptualize and experience gender roles in their everyday lives. Participants were randomly assigned to describe a time in which they had behaved either traditionally or progressively with regard to their gender. Over 80% of men and women in the traditional condition and women in the progressive condition provided condition-appropriate examples. However, men in the progressive condition only provided progressive examples 17% of the time, suggesting that many men may not have an understanding of progressive masculinity. Additional themes, implications, and directions for research on progressive masculinity are discussed.

The economic industrialization in the 1920s and 1930s influenced the structure of the society. It was also present in fiction, particularly in poetry. In understanding women the concept of progress had certain peculiarities, since it was associated with the changes of social roles women performed. Just examine the works of Z. Bandaryn, E. Pflaumbaum and other authors of Eastern Belarus. They are an evidence that understanding progress was connected with: a) development of science and technology; b) changing (or at least declaring such changes) gender roles and strengthening the position of women in society (in the party) and in literature. However, in female poetry of this period there is lack of reflection, a critical attitude towards the changes in women’s lives, especially with regard to the results of these changes. Progress was understood and portrayed unilaterally without analyzing women’s social status and their position in society.

This paper refers to a selected fragmant, which is about children’s gendered behaviours and children’s thoughts on gender issue, of an ethnographic study on children’s subjectivitation processes through digital technologies. For this whole study, philosophy for children approach was used as a technique to conduct focus group interviews with children in a periodical basis. The selected parts for this paper are based on three different sections of those interviews; first one is about children’s opinions on gender roles, referring to gendered occupations and plays for kids, the second one is also conducted to reveal the hidden discourses on gender in real society and virtual world which has been built on the existed world, and lastly adult-children hierarchical relations, was debated with children in order to connect this distinction to gender differences, will be mentioned.

　本論文は、植民地時代の朝鮮（1910-1945）における「新女子」の出現に光を当てる。第一に、筆者は19世紀の西洋文化および20世紀初頭の日本や中国に見られる「新女子」の起源を記述する。次に、前近代の朝鮮における女性の置かれた状況を、1920年代の植民地朝鮮における文化的・文学的動揺に焦点を当てながら簡潔に記述する。この動きは朝鮮文学と文化における「新女子」の出現の契機となった。論文の最後には、金明淳（1896-1951）、羅蕙錫（1896-1948）、金元周（1896-1971）といった、三人の朝鮮の「新女子」作家の業績を概観する。こうした作家達は、作品の中で性の不平等について表現し、偽りのない女性の声を現代朝鮮文学に知らしめた。本論文は、植民地時代の朝鮮における「新女子」の現象を理解・分析するのよりもむしろ、傑出した三人の朝鮮の「新女子」作家達の貢献を強調しながら、入門的に概観することが目的である。

This article looks at the mobility of highly skilled female migrants from the perspective of the post-socialist semi-peripheral countries in Eastern Europe. It analyses chosen aspects of the biographical experiences of highly skilled women from three post-USSR republics bordering the European Union – namely Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia – in Poland, a post-socialist country itself but also an EU member-state. The empirical analysis focuses on their lifestyle changes and choices, made through the experience of living in a new, though quite familiar Polish culture, which is both more emancipated (Western) while, at the same time, pertaining to some of the familiar (Eastern) patterns. Due to this liminal nature of the host country, the adaptation process of migrants is easier and comes at a lower biographical cost. In the analysis, I explore two notions: the gender roles renegotiation and the changes in the women’s approach towards the external manifestations of femininity, which I contrast with their reflections of the changes undergone. As for the gender role renegotiation, three main approaches were described varying by the degree to which the old, familiar patterns are maintained. In terms of the external notions of femininity, while taking care of one’s looks is still an observable element of the migrants’ identity, they do take advantage of the wider spectrum of options available in the host society, and try to blend in with the casual big-city crowd. The article was written on the basis of empirical material in the form of twenty in-depth, unstructured interviews, which were confronted with the selected subject literature.

Migration from the new European Union (EU) Member States to the United Kingdom (UK) has been identified as one of the most significant social phenomena of recent times and has been studied extensively, particularly since 2004. Although gendered studies of migration are now gaining recognition, there is limited literature in relation to Polish women. There is now much evidence to support the view that migrant women constitute a large proportion of international migrants; within the European context, migrant women already outnumber their male counterparts. Drawing on a review of secondary literature and preliminary findings from new qualitative research undertaken in Poland and the UK, this paper explores how Polish migrant women negotiate their lives in regard to work and welfare responsibilities when exercising their rights as EU citizens. It is argued that migrant women should be seen as active decision makers and that migration may be considered as an opportunity to bring about change in relation to gender roles. It is concluded that migration presents an opportunity to re-evaluate gender norms.
Migracje z nowych państw członkowskich Unii Europejskiej (UE) do United Kingdom (UK) zostały określone jako jeden z najbardziej znaczących procesów społecznych ostatnich czasów. Migracje te stanowią popularny przedmiot badań szczególnie po roku 2004. Pomimo tego iż studia genderowe zyskują uznanie, niewiele z nich uwzględnia polskie migrantki. Źrodła podają że migrantki stanowią dużą proporcję miedzynarodowych migrantów, zaś w kontekście europejskim, migrujące kobiety przewarzają nad migrującymi mężczyznami. Powyższy artykuł został stworzony na podstawie przeglądu źródeł zastanych oraz wstępnych wyników z nowych badań jakościowych przeprowadzonych w Polsce oraz UK. Artykuł ten opisuje jak polskie migrantki negocjują swoje obowiązki w odniesieniu do pracy na etacie oraz opieki nad domem/dziećmi kiedy przemieszczają się między krajami UE jako jej obywatelki. Autorka argumentuje iż migrantki powinny być postrzegane jako aktywne decydentki, zaś sam proces migracyjny niesie ze sobą potencjał zmian w kwestii ich ról płci. Konkludując, proces migracyjny może zainicjować ponowną ocenę ról związanych z płcią.

For pre-service students who have no professional experience, business English course books might become one of the main sources of information on how the corporate world communicates in English. Business English course books also provide students with an insight into the participation of men and women in international labour markets, as well as female and male positions on the corporate ladder. However, course books may understate the enormous variation in style and language which exists in the world of international business. They might also present a ‘false’ picture of gender roles in the labour market. The article presents results of an analysis of the sections developing oral communication in selected business English course books, with regard to speaking skills and their transferability across various speakers, branches of industry, national and corporate cultures, the variety(ies) of English students are taught, as well as female and male positions in the world of international business.
Dla osób, które uczą się języka angielskiego na lektoratach w szkołach wyższych i które nie posiadają doświadczenia zawodowego, podręczniki do języka angielskiego biznesowego mogą stać się jednym z głównych źródeł pokazujących w jaki sposób świat biznesu i korporacji międzynarodowych komunikuje się po angielsku. Podręczniki do języka angielskiego pokazują również uczącym się tego języka, jak wygląda sytuacja zawodowa kobiet i mężczyzn na międzynarodowych rynkach pracy i jakie pozycje zajmują kobiety i mężczyźni na szczeblach hierarchii korporacyjnej. Należy pamiętać jednak, że podręczniki do języka angielskiego biznesowego nie pokazują pełnego zróżnicowania językowego tak charakterystycznego dla międzynarodowego świata biznesu. Podręczniki te również pokazują nie do końca prawdziwy obraz mężczyzn i kobiet na rynku pracy. Artykuł prezentuje wyniki analizy ćwiczeń rozwijających sprawność mówienia w wybranych podręcznikach do języka angielskiego biznesowego na poziomie średniozaawansowanym wyższym pod kątem ćwiczonych umiejętności (np. negocjowanie, small talk, cold calling, itd.), komunikacji formalnej i nieformalnej, rodzajów języka angielskiego (np. język angielski brytyjski, język angielski amerykański, itd.), oraz ról kobiet i mężczyzn w międzynarodowym świecie biznesu. Na końcu artykułu znajdują się wskazówki pedagogiczne, których celem jest pokazanie, jak należy pracować ze studentami szkół wyższych korzystającymi z podręczników do języka angielskiego biznesowego, tak aby obraz świata biznesowego kształtujący się trakcie lektoratów był jak najbardziej wierny rzeczywistości.

Opis:
The paper offers a revision of the current knowledge concerning elderly Maya women, based on Maya and Spanish colonial sources, as well as iconographic artefacts such as vessels, figurines and mural painting. The main objective is to determine whether information derived from the above sources is congruent and whether it coincides with the current notions about these women. Moreover, special attention is paid to certain roles played by the elderly Maya women, which distinguish them from other female members of the community and, at the same time, bring them almost on a par with men.

Opis:
A venerable critical tradition has long flavoured the reception of Shakespeare’s plays with psychology. Characters are read as real people, and as a consequence, the plays are analysed from the starting point of an individual character’s inward personality. However, this literary reading of the plays fails to take into account not only the performance of character on the Renaissance stage but also the theatrical culture that predetermines forms of characterisation for that audience. The playing of roles within this drama needs to be continually re-investigated, and in the case of The Winter’s Tale and Othello, fully reimagined. The conventional ascription of the plot development entirely to the jealousy of both Leontes and Othello can accordingly be reworked. The modern obsession with psychology obscures a field of semantic forces that goes well beyond the purview of any individual to a social encoding of possible behaviours. This restores multiple potentialities to the plays in performance, freeing them from a narrow insistence that meaning is rooted entirely in the individual. This in turn provides a context for deeper analysis of gender roles and how they intersect with the impetus generated by patriarchal modes of inheritance.
