Opis:
It was shown in this study that isolated porcine coronary arteries (PCA) contracted by depolarization with high Ko or by histamine are dose-dependently relaxed by glutamic acid, aspartic acid, N-methyl-asparate (NMDA) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Zn2+ was also shown to relax dose-dependently PCA contractions induced by 50 mM KCl with an ED50 value of about 1.5 mM and to inhibit dose-dependently histamine-induced contractions, shifting ED50 values from 6μM to 40 μM, not affecting however corresponding cumulative concentration-response (CCR) curves established for acetylcholine-induced contractions. Furthermore, since Zn2+ ions are co-localized in many glutamatergic synapses of the central nervous system, it has been postulated in analogy to glutamate neurotoxicity that perturbations of the synaptic zinc concentrations might be a triggering factor in several cerebral diseases, such as ischemic strokes and sustained seizures. Unfortunately, little is known so far about effects of glutamate and zinc ions on the vascular tone. Although the nature of the glutamatergic receptors occurring in the blood vessels investigated in this study remains unclear, the results suggest that glutamate and Zn2+ ions interact with voltage-gated as well with ligand-operated Ca-channels. An interesting aspect might be the putative role of glutamate and zinc as long-term toxic agents in the early steps of the pathomechanisms leading to degenerative vascular lesions.

Opis:
Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) is an ornamental bulbous plant and a famous cut flower in tropical and subtropical regions. Post-harvest senescence of the cut flowers is the main factor limiting the marketability of most of these species including tuberose. From the perspective of metabolic changes, senescence happens as the result of oxidative processes induced by active oxygen species production. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and salicylic acid (SA) are compounds with some functions in the post-harvest physiology of some plants. The present study focused on the effect of GABA and SA on vase life and some post-harvest traits of cut tuberose flowers. The plants were sprayed with GABA (5, 10, or 15 mg L–1) and SA (50, 100, or 150 mg L–1) at three stages during growth and before harvest in a greenhouse (30, 45, and 60 days after the planting of the bulbs) and were observed after harvest until senescence. Results showed that GABA and SA positively affected the vase life, water uptake, fresh weight, ion leakage, total dissolved solids, chlorophyll, protein, and catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase enzymatic activity. They postponed senescence. The highest and lowest vase lives were observed in plants treated with 10 mg L–1 GABA (11 days) and control (distilled water) (7 days), respectively. It was found that the treatment of tuberose with GABA and SA during growth can improve its post-harvest quality. However, it is recommended to conduct further studies on them.

Opis:
Efforts have been made during the past three decades to develop insecticides with selective properties that act specifically on biochemical sites present in a particular insect group, but whose properties differ from those present in mammals. This approach has led to the discovery of compounds that affect the hormonal regulation of molting and developmental processes in insects such as ecdysone agonists, juvenile hormone (JH) mimics and chitin synthesis inhibitors. The search for potent acylureas has led to the development of novaluron (Rimon) developed by Makhteshim Chemical Works. The LC-50 value of novaluron on 3rd-instar Spodoptera littoralis fed on treated leaves is approximately 0.1 mg a.i./liter. This value resembles that of chlorfluazuron and is tenfold lower than that of teflubenzuron. Novaluron affects nymphs of Bemisia tabaci more than chlorfluazuron and teflubenzuron. Artificial rain, at a rate of 40 mm/h applied 5 and 24 h after treatment in a cotton field had no appreciable effect on the potency of novaluron on both S. littoralis larvae and B. tabaci nymphs. Hence, novaluron can be used in tropical areas and during rainy seasons. In general, benzoylphenyl ureas had no direct effect on parasitoids and phytoseiids and are considered mildly affect other natural enemies. Novaluron has no cross-resistance with conventional insecticides, the JH mimics pyriproxyfen and neonicotinoids. As such, it is considered an important compound in pest management programs.
