Opis:
A Si-Fe-Al ternary oxide-based micropowder coating was used to prevent the formation of a Zn coating on steel during the hot-dip Zn galvanizing process to reduce the welding fume and defects generated during the welding of Zn-galvanized steel. The composition ratio of the oxide powder was optimized and its microstructure and weldability were evaluated. The optimized oxide coating was stable in the hot-dip galvanizing bath at 470°C and effectively inhibited the formation of Zn coating. The Zn residue could be easily removed with simple mechanical impact. The proposed coating reduced Zn fume and prevented the residual Zn from melting in the weld bead during high-temperature welding, thus reducing the number of welding defects. The results indicated that this pretreatment can simplify the manufacturing process and shorten the process time cost-effectively.

Opis:
Zinc coatings obtained by immersion metallization are an effective and economical way to protect against corrosion also for high carbon steels, foundry iron alloys. However, the difficulties encountered in surface preparation due to oxide contamination, as well as the presence of carbon (graphite) from the casting process or cast iron sludge, make cast irons zinc-plated by manufacturers reluctantly. The technological properties of the zinc baths and the technological properties of the coatings obtained vary considerably depending on the various impurity and alloying additives. The effect of zincing time significantly affects the thickness of zinc coatings and is dependent on the mass and thickness of the sample. The submerged object heats up faster or slower, depending on the thickness, and its temperature first reaches and then exceeds the melting point of the zinc. However, to avoid zinc over time, it is appropriate to respond to the current ISO standard EN 1461:2009, which specifies the minimum thickness of zinc coatings on steel substrate. The subject of the study was the optimization of parameters metallization using the Taguchi Method. The analysis took into account the influence of the immersion time and temperature of the bath of molten zinc on the thickness of the zinc coating. The test was conducted for three different times, i.e. 30, 60 and 150 seconds and for three different values of the temperature of the bath: 440, 460, 480 [°C]. In order to predict the thickness of the coating, multiple regression analysis was applied, which showed that the experiment was carried out correctly and falling within the limits of tolerance error.

The paper presents the results of studies on the preparation and properties of composite granules produced by phase inversion from cellulose (CEL) solutions in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazole acetate (EMIMAc), containing nano-addition in the form of graphene oxide (GO) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Water absorption and sorption of such compounds as FeCl3, methylene blue (MB) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were studied. In addition, attempts were made to investigate the sorption properties of the obtained cellulose granules in terms of metals removal from galvanizing wastewater. Among the many components, iron and lead were found to have the highest concentration (~ 1 mg Fe/dm3; ~2 mg Pb/dm3) in the tested wastewater sample. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the wastewater was examined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The studies show that doping of cellulose with Graphene oxide clearly affects the physical properties of this biopolymer. GO improves the water absorption of CEL/GO composite cellulose granules only in the concentration above 0.05% w/w. For a concentration of 0.1% w/w of GO in cellulose, water absorption is increased by ~108% compared to pure cellulose granules. In addition, the use of dry and wet granules in the study changes their sorption properties with respect to all tested substances. Studies on test solutions have shown that the sorption of cellulose granules decreases with increasing molar mass of test compounds, in the following order: FeCl3, methylene blue (MB) and bovine albumin (BSA). This means that the cellulose granules obtained in the experiment are made up of small micropores, which makes the diffusion of compounds of high molecular weight difficult. The best sorption results were obtained for ferric ions and amounted to 66–72% for FeCl3 solution, and ~92% for the wastewater that was sorbed on pure cellulose granules.

Opis:
Many wire products (e.g. nets) are made from galvanized material. The hot dip galvanizing process gives the possibility of applying in a respectively thick coat of zinc (also depending on the time of staying wires in the bath) which provides the protection of the product against corrosion. In the available literature there were no research concerned with the influence of hot dip galvanizing process on the mechanical properties TRIP structure steel wires. Therefore, an experiment was carried out in laboratory conditions allowing the determination of the influence of hot dip galvanizing process parameters on the mechanical properties (tensile strength UST and yield strength YS) of TRIP steel wires as well as on the amount of retained austenite in their structure. It has been stated that the hot galvanizing process of TRIP steel wires influences, proportionally to the time of staying wires in zinc bath, on their plastic properties (the increase in yield strength YS) as well as the decrease in the amount of retained austenite in their structure. Such a phenomenon can be caused by stresses responsible for rapid heating of the wire put in the zinc bath in temperature of 450°C and by the strengthening of the materials resulting from the transformation of retained austenite.

This paper analyses the heat treatment of the hot-dip zinc coating deposited on both cast iron and steel. The aim of research is to increase coating hardness and wear resistance without decreasing its anticorrosion properties. Hot-dip zinc coating was deposited in industrial conditions (acc. PN-EN ISO 10684) on disc shape samples and bolts M12x60. The achieved results were assessed on the basis of microscopic observation (with the use of an optical and scanning microscope), EDS (point and linear) analysis and micro-hardness measurements. It was discovered that the heat treatment of zinc coating results in an increase in hardness which is caused by the corresponding changes in microstructure.

The paper discusses experimental studies to determine the effect of the die working portion angle on the lubrication conditions, zinc coating thickness and the mechanical properties of medium-carbon steel wires. The test material was 5.5 mm-diameter wire rod which was drawn into 2.2 mm-diameter wire in seven draws at a drawing speed of v = 10 m/s. Conventional drawing dies of a working portion angle of α = 3, 4, 5, 6, 7°, respectively, were used for the drawing process. After the drawing process, the quantity of the lubricant on the wire surface and the thickness of the zinc coating were determined in individual draws. Testing the finished 2.2 mm-diameter wires for mechanical properties, on the other hand, determined the effect of the die working portion on the yield point, tensile strength, uniform and total elongation, reduction in area, the number of twists and the number of bends.

This article presents the research on corrosion resistance of Zn-Al-Mg coatings with varying aluminium and magnesium content. Aluminium and magnesium were added directly to the zinc bath at 10:1 rate. There was found more than sixfold increase in corrosion resistance of zinc coatings with aluminium content at the level of 4% of weight and magnesium content at the level of 0.4% of weight. In contrast to the amounts applied in the literature, such content of these alloy additives in the zinc bath limits to a significant extent the amount of intermetallic phases in zinc coatings obtained from such baths. This, in consequence, results in high resistance to corrosion with simultaneous retention of high plasticity of these coatings.

Opis:
The paper deals with the fabrication of the surface layer enriched with Zn on AlSi17 aluminium alloy to modify the microstructure and surface properties of the alloy. The continuous surface layer was fabricated on the AlSi17 substrate by the hot-dip galvanizing of AlSi17 for 15min in a Zn bath heated to 450°C. The thickness of the layer was about 100 μm. The layer was characterised by a multi-component microstructure containing the regions of a solid solution of Al in Zn and dendrites of a eutectoid composed of a solid solution of Al in Zn and a solid solution of Zn in Al. In the layer, fine particles of Si with a regular shape were distributed. The results indicated that these Si particles formed by the action of Zn on the eutectic Si precipitations in the AlSi17 substrate. In the microstructure, large primary Si crystals and multi-phase precipitations, originating from the substrate, were also observed. The surface layer had much higher microhardness than the AlSi17 substrate. The results showed that hot-dip galvanizing can be used to modify the microstructure and properties of the surface layer of AlSi17. The study indicates the possibility of conducting further research on the fabrication of joints between AlSi17 and other metallic materials using a Zn interlayer fabricated by hot-dip galvanizing.

In this study, the surface roughness of galvannealed low carbon Al-killed and Ti-Nb stabilized interstitial free steels was investigated using the industrial galvannealing process parameters. The iron content of the coatings was also analysed to establish a relationship with the surface roughness and coating composition. The surface roughness displayed an exponential behaviour with increasing of annealing time at each annealing temperature in both steel coatings, which was in an increasing order in the galvannealed low carbon Al-killed steel coating, whereas it was a reverse order in the galvannealed Ti-Nb stabilized interstitial free steel coating. The craters were observed on the galvannealed coatings resulting in high surface roughness. Increasing the iron content of the coatings leads to a reduction in the surface roughness with δ1k phase.

The article discusses the future of the production of protective coatings based on the hot-dip galvanizing of iron-carbon alloys, such as steel or cast iron. Currently exploited zinc deposits will be exhausted in the next two decades and it will be necessary to start the exploitation of new deposits in order to maintain the supply or quantity of Zn on the global market. In both cases, it will be related to the increasing cost of zinc on world markets. Zinc-based protective coatings (one of the best corrosion protection methods) constitute almost 50% of the world’s zinc consumption. Economic issues with the constant increase in the price of Zn will force the change or modification of hot-dip galvanizing technology. The article presents data on the production, consumption and development of zinc prices on the global market. Possible directions are presented which producers of zinc coatings will have to follow in order to maintain sales markets, such as the modification of chemical compositions of protective alloys which could be an alternative to pure zinc coatings and the possibility of limiting zinc consumption based on the influence of the surface of galvanized elements, i.e. its metal matrix, and surface roughness.

The article presents the method to assess the diffusion coefficient D in the sub-layer of intermetallic phases formed during hot-dip galvanizing “Armco” iron and ductile cast iron EN-GJS-500-7. Hot-dip galvanizing is one of the most popular forms of long-term protection of Fe-C alloys against corrosion. The process for producing a protective layer of sufficient quality is closely related to diffusion of atoms of zinc and iron. The simulation consist in performed a hot-dip galvanizing in laboratory condition above Fe-C alloys, in the Department of Engineering of Cast Alloys and Composites. Galvanizing time ranged from 15 to 300 seconds. Then metallographic specimens were prepared, intermetallic layers were measured and diffusion coefficient (D) were calculated. It was found that the diffusion coefficient obtained during hot-dip galvanizing “Armco” iron and zinc is about two orders of magnitude less than the coefficient obtained on ductile cast iron EN-GJS-500-7.
