Opis:
Ash dieback, caused by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, is a serious disease of common and narrow-leaved ash in Europe. The resistance of individual trees seems to be important for the maintenance of ash in European forests. In this in situ wound inoculation study, the susceptibility and differences in resistance to H. fraxineus between Fraxinus excelsior and F. angustifolia clones were assessed. Neither of the tested clones revealed total resistance to ash dieback; variety between the tested clones was observed. Differences in necroses lengths were significant between clones and between two ash species. Longer necroses were formed in F. angustifolia than in F. excelsior. Some clones exhibiting some resistance to the pathogen were identified.

Opis:
Invasive fungal infection (IFI) in patients with malignant solid tumours is rare, but it highly increases the risk of cancer recurrence because of prolonged discontinuation of cancer treatment. This paper presents a case of IFI induced by Candida glabrata in a 14-year-old girl with advanced Ewing’s sarcoma and metastases to the bone marrow. She was intensively treated with chemotherapy (CWS, CEVAIE, EWING 2008 + VIDE) and radiotherapy. As the treatment was ineffective, the tumour was surgically removed from the sacrum, and VAI chemotherapy was administered. Due to the symptoms of infection, antifungal treatment was initiated with caspofungin, followed by prophylaxis with posaconazole. In terms of anti-cancer treatment, the patient received megatherapy with auto-HSCT. Signs of infection and gastrotoxic complications developed, which is why broad-spectrum antibiotics and amphotericin B lipid complex were administered. Even so, a multisystem IFI appeared, causing the patient’s death. In multidrug chemotherapy with extended periods of agranulocytosis, primary prevention should be considered, similar to the one offered to patients with haematological malignancies.

In the years 2001-2004, the occurrence of parasitic fungi of plants of the genera Betula and Salix growing in the Słowiński National Park was investigated. The plant species examined included B. pubescens, B. pendula, S. aurita, S. caprea, S. cinerea, S. fragilis, and S. repens. Plants of the genus Betula were affected by 9 species of parasiting fungi. In Poland, three of them (Microsphaera ornata var. europaea, Phyllactinia guttata, Melampsoridium betulinum) occur commonly, five (Asteroma leptothyrioides, Discula betulina, Fusicladium betulae, Phyllosticta betulina, Septoria betulina) are rare, and Septoria betulae-odoratae has not been recorded to date. Three species, Asteroma leptothyrioides, Fusicladium betulae, Phyllosticta betulina), were found on new plant hosts. Plants of the genus Salix were attacked by 8 species of parasiting fungi. Four of them (Melampsora allii-fragilis, M. caprearum, M. epitea, Uncinula adunca var. adunca) are common in Poland, four (Marssonina salicicola, Phyllosticta salicicola, Septoria salicicola, Trimmatostroma betulinum) rarely occur here. Uncinula adunca var. adunca, Marssonina salicicola, Phyllosticta salicicola, Septoria salicicola and Trimmatostroma betulinum were associated with the plant species not reported earlier to be their hosts.

Opis:
Fusarium mycotoxins are secondary metabolites, bio-synthesized by filamentous fungi of the genus Fusarium, which, due to their diverse toxicity and difficulty in their removal from food and animal feeds, are the subject of research by scientists around the world. The most important mycotoxins found in wheat are: deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), and the T-2 and HT-2 toxins. Bearing consumer safety in mind, the levels of these substances in grain, food and animal feeds are regulated by law. In order to meet the health safety requirements imposed on grain, it is important to minimise the risk of fungal infection at individ-ual production stages. Weather conditions are the most important factor influencing the development of fungi and the accumula-tion of mycotoxins in grain. High temperature, combined with rainfall, are factors favouring the spread of fungal spores. Apart from weather conditions, individual elements of the production technology, such as appropriate variety selection, soil cultivation method, preceding crop, use of fungicides, and fertilization may reduce the quantity of mycotoxins in grain. In the conditions of the emerging climatic changes, favouring the development of fun-gal diseases, creating wheat varieties resistant to fungal diseases is a considerable challenge. Acquiring more in-depth knowledge on the relationship between the phenotypic features of a wheat variety and mycotoxin content would be helpful. This work is of review character and aims to indicate the basic factors influenc-ing the production of fusarium mycotoxins in winter wheat grain. The focus was placed on factors independent of human activity (weather conditions) and on individual elements of cultivation technology.

Opis:
Introduction. Although airborne fungal diversity in tropical countries is known to be considerable, aerobiological research to-date has identified only a part of the fungal mycobiota that may have an impact both on human health and on crops. Previous studies in Havana city identified only 30 genera and 5 spore types; therefore, new research is required in these latitudes. This study sought to investigate airborne spore levels in Havana, with a view to learning more about local fungal diversity and assessing its influence in quantitative terms. Materials and method. A Hirst type volumetric sampler was located on the rooftop of a building 35 meters above ground level, in a busy area of the city. Sampling was carried out continuously (operating 24hours/day), at 10 L per minute during the year 2015. The fungal spores were collected on a Melinex tape coated with a 2% silicone solution. The results were expressed as spores per cubic meter (spores/m3) of air when to referring to daily values, and spores count if referring to annual value. Results. Fourteen new genera were identified in the course of volumetric sampling: six produce ascospores and eight conidia. Morphobiometric characteristics were noted for all genera, and airborne concentrations were calculated. These genera accounted for 56.4% of relative fungal frequency over the study year. Conclusions. Many airbone fungi are primary causes of both respiratory disease and crop damage. These new findings constitute a major contribution to Cuba’s aerobiological database.

Bacterial biomass, carbon biogeochemistry, climate change, fungal biomass, protozoan biomass, soil carbon enrichment
Opis:
The ecology of tundra terrestrial environments has gained increasing attention due to potential major changes resulting from global warming and climate change. However, the composition of terrestrial microbial communities and their role in the biogeochemical carbon cycle are less well studied. This is the first report of the C-biomass of bacteria, fungi, and representative protozoa (heterotrophic nanoflagellates, naked amoebae, and testate amoebae) in Alaskan tundra soil samples, and the effects of glucose solution enrichment in laboratory studies simulating release of soluble organic compounds as may occur during permafrost melt and increased plant root exudates due to global warming. The data for three moss-rich surface samples, two in spring and one in summer (2011), are reported for C-supplemented (8,000 μg glucose-C) and non-supplemented treatments in laboratory culture. Seven days after supplementation, fungal C-biomass in the glucose-treated and untreated samples were similar in the range of 5 to 11 mg g–1 soil dry weight, the highest values in the summer samples. The bacterial C-biomass was the next highest in the range of 20 to 120 μg g–1 soil dry weight, followed by heterotrophic nanoflagellates (2 to 14 μg g–1 soil dry weight). The naked amoebae (0.13 to 0.94 μg C g–1 soil dry weight) and testate amoebae (2 to 20 ng C g–1 soil dry weight) contributed the least C-biomass. All of the bacterial and protozoan treatments showed increased biomass with glucose supplementation. Based on size, and C-biomass estimates, the phagotrophic protozoa appear to be organized in a classical bacterial-based trophic hierarchy (i.e. bacteria – nanoflagellates – naked amoebae – testate amoebae, in ascending order). Correlations of the C-biomass of bacteria to each of the protozoa, provided further evidence of a trophic pyramid; bacteria vs. nanoflagellates (r = –0.986), indicating top-down control by predatory flagellates, bacteria vs. naked amoebae (r = –0.361) and bacteria vs. testate amoebae (r = –0.131), each of decreasing magnitude as would be predicted for higher level consumers. Estimates of bacterial predation indicated strong predatory pressures on bacteria by the protozoa, greater with C-supplementation compared to the non-supplemented treatments.

The influence of aluminium oxide particles in the culture medium on laccase biosynthesis and fungal morphology was studied. The results show the positive effect of microparticles at all tested concentrations of aluminium oxide. The concentration of 15 g/l was selected as the optimal one because of high laccase activity and complete incorporation of aluminium oxide to biomass. The higher concentration of aluminium oxide caused the decrease in pellets size and their surfaces got more hairy up to transformation into dispersed morphology at the concentration of 30 g/l.

Opis:
Cayratia trifolia Linn. Domin Syn. Vitis trifolia (family: Vitaceae ) contains polyphenols as major bioactive compounds. Plant polyphenolics, such as stilbenes, possess a broad spectrum of pharmacological and therapeutic effects, including antioxidative, anticancerous, antiatherosclerotic, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects. Elicitation is one of the important strategies to enhance secondary metabolite production in cell suspension cultures. In the present study, the effect of two biotic elicitors, namely one fungal (Fusarium sp., and Helminthosporium sp.) extract and another higher plant-originated gum (Anogeissus latifolia ), was evaluated for enhanced production of stilbenes in cell suspension culture of C. trifolia. For the fungal elicitor, the cell suspension cultures of C. trifolia were treated with varying concentrations of Fusarium extract (FE) and Helminthosporium extract (HE) on the 7th day of culture. Increasing concentration of FE in the medium resulted in slightly decreased cell growth but increased the production of stilbenes, with the optimal concentration at 1000 mg/l. This increase in the yield of stilbenes was -5 times (9.30 mg/l) higher than the control value. HE was less effective than FE in increasing stilbene production at optimal concentrations. The addition of 50 mg/l A. latifolia plant gum sieved through a 150 mesh (0.1 mm) to C. trifolia cell culture enhanced stilbene accumulation and yield by 8- to 9-fold over the control value.

Background: Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection affecting people with impaired immunity. The aim of this study is to shed light on the epidemiology, incidence, and outcome of patients with mucormycosis hospitalized at a tertiary care center in Pondicherry. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review between January 2008 and January 2018. All patients with proven or probable mucormycosis were included. Results: A total of 24 patients were included. Their median age was 49 years and the majority were males. Comorbidities included mainly hematologic malignancy and diabetes mellitus. A liposomal amphotericin B formulation alone or in combination with other antifungals was used as a first line agent in all patients. Conclusion: The incidence of mucormycosis has significantly increased over the past 10 years at our institution, most likely due to increased risk factors.

The aim of the study was to determine the causes of dying down of sprout and needles of Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.) and its cultivar ‘Glauca’ in the park collection of the Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University in Cracow. For several years, the disease symptoms described in the article have led to the loss of decorative values of these trees. The study was conducted in the years 2002 and 2003 by means of the control of plant healthfulness, phytopathological diagnostics, isolation of microorganisms from tissues exhibiting diseases symptoms, as well as the culture and identification of the isolated fungi. Both, the control of tree healthfulness, and specialized laboratory techniques proved that the symptoms diagnosed in plants had an infectious character, and that the fungi might be the main causing agents. The analysis of the fungal populations isolated from the affected tissues indicates the combined occurrence of fungi in tissues of the studied plants and the domination of the following species: Alternaria consortiale, Aureobasidium pullulans, Penicillium canescens, Phoma pomorum, Ulocladium consortiale, Zythiostroma pinastri.
W latach 2002 i 2003 przeprowadzono badania w oparciu o ocenę zdrowotności roślin, diagnostykę fitopatologiczną, wyosobnienie mikroorganizmów z tkanek z objawami chorobowymi oraz hodowlę i identyfikację wyosobnionych grzybów.

The aim of the presented mini-review is to review the literature data referring to opportunistic mycoses in pet dogs and cats suffering from other concurrent diseases, comparable to human medical disorders with high risk of secondary mycoses. This review also presents the preliminary results of a project aimed at understanding the fungal colonization and occurrence of secondary mycoses in pets suffering from metabolic disorders, neoplasms and viral infections. The incidence of opportunistic mycoses is higher in such individuals, mostly because of their impaired immunity. The main risk factors are primary and secondary types of immunodeficiency connected with anti-cancer treatment or neoplastic disease itself. Moreover, literature data and the results of our investigations show that Candida yeasts are prevalent among diabetic animals and indicate that these fungi are the main etiological agents of secondary infections of the oral cavity, GI and urogenital tracts. Other important conditions possibly favoring the development of mycoses are concurrent infections of cats with FeLV and FIV viruses. Thus, in all cases of the mentioned underlying diseases, animals should be carefully monitored by repeated mycological examination, together with inspection of other parameters. Also, the prophylaxis of opportunistic mycoses should be carefully considered alike other factors influencing the prognosis and the outcome of primary diseases.

Until recently, triticale was considered to be a species of low disease susceptibility. Research results indicate, however, that it is more and more frequently infected by stem-base, leaf, and spike diseases, and the loses caused by disease occurrence may reach 1/3 of yield. The aim of the study was the determination of leaf and spike disease occurrence in winter triticale protected with fungicides, in the conditions of diversified nitrogen fertilization doses. Study material was winter triticale plants cultivar Gniewko, obtained from a three-year-long (2009-2011) filed experiment at the Production and Experimental Station in Bałcyny near Ostróda. First factor was nitrogen fertilization: 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 kg·ha-1. Second factor was the level of protection against fungal diseases: seed dressing, seed dressing and one on-leaf treatment, and seed dressing and two on-leaf treatments. Weather conditions in the study years significantly differentiated the intensity of disease symptoms. Nitrogen fertilization significantly affected winter triticale wholesomeness and caused a decrease in flag leaf infection by Rhynchosporium secalis only in the second research year. However, in the case of chaff septoriosis, an increase in infection was noted under the effect of increasing nitrogen doses. The applied fungicides effectively inhibited the development of flag and sub-flag leaves (leaf septoriosis, brown rust, powdery mildew) and spikes (chaff septoriosis and powdery mildew). Significant inhibition in fungal disease intensity was noted only after the application of two on-leaf treatments.
Czynnik drugiego rzędu stanowił poziom ochrony przed chorobami grzybowymi: zaprawa nasienna, zaprawa nasienna i jeden zabieg nalistny oraz zaprawa nasienna i dwa zabiegi nalistne. Użyte fungicydy skutecznie hamowały rozwój patogenów liści flagowych i podflagowych (septorioza liści, rdza brunatna, mączniak prawdziwy) oraz kłosów (septorioza plew i mączniak prawdziwy). Istotne ograniczanie nasilenia chorób grzybowych odnotowano dopiero po zastosowaniu dwóch zabiegów nalistnych.
