Multilayered coatings established on parts of internal combustion as well as jet engines may be used as TBC systems providing their better thermal-mechanical efficiency, tribological properties, wear resistance and ability to withstand the influence of aggressive media. The example coating system was established on a beryllium copper substrate and consisted of the NiCr midsurface and TiN external layers. The system was analyzed as a functionally gradient material (FGM) with an assumed linear gradient function of material properties in transition zones between volumes of the pure materials of the substrate, midsurface and the external coating. The influence of the chosen microstructure features onto distribution of residual stresses was investigated. . These features were: transition zones, porosity and roughness of the external surface of the coating. Transition zones are the areas at the borders between particular layers of different materials where they are mutually interpenetrated. Different types of porosity were taken into comparisons: evenly dispersed and forming clusters. The 5, 10, 15 and 20% porosities of both of the types were investigated. At last roughness of the coating surface was introduced into the models. All the features were automatically generated with the use of random procedures.

Opis:
Based on the Donnell theory of shells combined with the von-Karman type of geometrical nonlinearity, three coupled equilibrium equations for a through-the-thickness functionally graded cylindrical shell embedded in a two parameter Pasternak elastic foundation are ob- tained. Equivalent properties of the shell are obtained based on the Voigt rule of mixture in terms of a power law volume fraction for the constituents. Properties of the constituents are considered to be temperature dependent. The temperature profile through the shell thick- ness is obtained by means of the central finite difference method. Linear prebuckling analysis is performed to obtain the prebuckling forces of the cylindrical shell. Stability equations are derived based on the well-known adjacent equilibrium criterion. Three coupled partial dif- ferential stability equations are solved with the aid of a hybrid Fourier-GDQ method. After validating the numerical results, some parametric studies are conducted to investigate the influence of various parameters, especially foundation interaction. It is shown that elastic foundation enhances the critical buckling temperature difference of the shell and violates the buckled pattern.

This contribution deals with the modelling and analysis of stability problems for thin composite annular plates interacting with elastic heterogeneous subsoil. The object of analysis is an annular plate with a deterministic heterogeneous microstructure and the apparent properties smoothly varying along a radial direction. The aim of contribution is to formulate two macroscopic mathematical models describing stability of this plate. The considerations are based on a tolerance averaging technique. The general results are applied to the analysis of some special stability problems. The obtained results of critical forces with those obtained from finite element method are compared.

Complementary Functions Method
Opis:
A novel approach is employed to a general solution for one-dimensional steady-state thermal and mechanical stresses in a hollow thick cylinder made of a functionally graded material (FGM). The temperature distribution is assumed to be a function of radius, with general thermal and mechanical boundary conditions on the inside and outside surfaces of the cylinder. The material properties, except Poisson’s ratio, are assumed to be exponentially-varying through the thickness. Forcing functions applied to the inner boundary are internal pressures which may be in form of steps. These conditions result in governing differential equations with variable coefficients. Analytical solutions to such equations cannot be obtained except for certain simple grading functions and pressures. Numerical approaches must be adopted to solve the problem in hand. The novelty of the present study lies in the fact that the Complementary Functions Method (CFM) is employed in the analysis. The Complementary Functions method (CFM) will be infused into the analysis to convert the problem into an initial-value problem which can be solved accurately. Benchmark solutions available in the literature are used to validate the results and to observe the convergence of the numerical solutions. The solution procedure is well-structured, simple and efficient and it can be readily applied to cylinders. It is also well suited for problems in which mechanical properties are graded.

The study describes the microstructural analysis of cylindrically-shaped functionally graded products sintered from iron powder with scheduled graded structure on the cross-section running from the core to the surface layer of the sinter. Different types of structure were produced using Distaloy SE powder in two compositions - one without the addition of carbon, and another with 0.6wt% C. Two methods were used to fill the die cavity and shape the products. The first method involving a two-step compaction of individual layers. The second method using an original technique of die filling enabled the formation of transition zone between the outer layer and the core still at the stage of product shaping. As part of microstructural analysis, structural constituents were identified and voids morphology was examined. Studies covered the effect of the type of the applied method on properties of the graded zone obtained in the manufactured products.

Opis:
Fabrication of functionally graded materials (FGM) can be obtained by layeredmixing of two materials of different thermo-mechanical properties with different volume ratios gradually changing from layer to layer such that the first layer has only a few particles of the second phase and the last has the maximum volume ratio of the first phase. Consider a simple model of the functionally graded materials as a multilayered beam bonded to planes having shear modulus Gi and Poisson's ratio [ni]I, respectively, subjected to bending. The behaviour of cracks depends on cracks configuration, size, orientation, material properties, and loading characteristic. The fracture mechanics problem will be approached by making use of photoelastic visualisation of fracture events in the model structure.
Sposób wykonania materiałów funkcyjnie zmiennych -- FGM, polega na nakładaniu (lub napylaniu) kolejnych (możliwie cienkich) warstw. Warstwy te składają się zazwyczaj z dwóch składników o różnych własnościach (mechanicznych, termicznych itp.) np. ciekły metal (plazma) i ceramika. Technologia wykonania jest następująca: najpierw nakłada się warstwę czystego ciekłego metalu, następnie warstwę ciekłego metalu z niewielką domieszką ceramiki, następne warstwy to ciekły metal ze zwiększającą się ilością ceramiki, aż do ostatniej warstwy składającej się z czystej ceramiki. W ten sposób (po zastygnięciu) otrzymuje się powłoki izolacyjne stosowane do komór spalania silników, warstwy termoizolacyjne promów i kapsuł kosmicznych itp. W pracy podano metodę doświadczalno-obliczeniową stanu naprężeń i odkształceń dla kompozytów warstwowych zbudowanych z materiałów gradientowych. Podano także dla takich kompozytów ze szczelinami kryterium zniszczenia. Opracowana metoda jest metoda hybrydową - opierając się na wynikach badań doświadczalnych, opisano stan naprężenia i odkształcenia, stosując metodę potencjałów zespolonych. Na podstawie wyników badań doświadczalnych opisano stan naprężeń i odkształceń dla materiałów liniowo-sprężystych i sprężysto-plastycznych w formie funkcji potencjałów zespolonych. Zastosowanie metody potencjałów zespolonych w postaci szeregów do analizy pól naprężeń umożliwia analizę wyników badań doświadczalnych modeli kompozytów, z uwagi na budowę równań, które w kompleksowy sposób opisują stan naprężenia w formie sumy i różnicy naprężeń normalnych. Przeprowadzone obliczenia i badania mają na celu weryfikację modelu, który można zastosować do obliczeń kompozytów warstwowych.

The present investigation aims at fabricating a functionally graded Al-6Cr-Y2O3 composite and its microstructural and property characterization. Al-6Cr-alloys with varying percentage of Y2O3 (5-10 vol. %) have been used to fabricate FGM by powder metallurgy route. The samples were subsequently subjected to solution treatment at 610°C for 4h followed by artificially aged at 310°C for 4h. The microstructure, hardness and wear behavior of these FGM have been evaluated. FGM exhibited superior hardness (360 ± 5 VHN) as compared to the unprocessed composites (220 ± 5 VHN) due to the uniform dispersion of Y2O3 particles. Wear resistance of Al-6Cr-10Y2O3 FGM were compared that of with pure Al-6Cr alloy by dry abrasive wear test. Al-6Cr-10Y2O3 FGM composites were found to exhibit higher wear resistance with the minimum wear rate of 0.009 mm3/m compared to the Al-6Cr alloy wear rate 0.02 mm3/m.

The objective of this study is to present a numerical modeling of mixed-mode fracture in isotropic functionally graded materials (FGMs), under mechanical and thermal loading conditions. In this paper, a modified displacement extrapolation technique (DET) was proposed to calculate the stress intensity factor (SIFs) for isotropic FGMs. Using the Ansys Parametric Design Language APDL, the continuous variations of the material properties are incorporated by specified parameters at the centroid of each element. Three numerical examples are presented to evaluate the accuracy of SIFs calculated by the proposed method. Comparisons have been made between the SIFs predicted by the DET and the available reference solutions in the current literature. A good agreement is obtained between the results of the DET and the reference solutions.

Tungsten is a prime candidate material for the plasma-facing components in future fusion devices, e.g. ITER and DEMO. Because of the harsh and complex loading conditions and the differences in material properties, joining of the tungsten armor to the underlying construction and/or cooling parts is a complicated issue. To alleviate the thermal stresses at the joint, a sharp interface may be replaced by a gradual one with a smoothly varying composition. In this paper, several techniques for the formation of tungsten-steel composites and graded layers are reviewed. These include plasma spraying, laser cladding, hot pressing and spark plasma sintering. Structure, composition and selected thermal and mechanical properties of representative layers produced by each of these techniques are presented. A summary of advantages and disadvantages of the techniques and an assessment of their suitability for the production of plasma-facing components is provided.

Artykuł prezentuje zastosowanie Metody Elementów Brzegowych (MEB) w odniesieniu do środowisk niejednorodnych na przykładzie badań zawilgocenia murów. Realnym obiektem badań jest zawilgocony mur o zmieniającej się wraz z wysokością i wzdłuż grubości muru wilgotnością i związaną z nią przewodnością. Wyniki obliczeń porównywane są z pomiarami dokonanymi metodą suszarkowo-wagową i za pomocą tomografu impedancyjnego. Tego typu zastosowania wiążą się bezpośrednio z nieniszczącymi pomiarami efektów osuszania budynków. Zmodyfikowany algorytm MEB jest zasadniczą częścią obliczeniową tomografu pozwalającego na odtworzenie obrazu niedostępnego wnętrza obiektu.
The object of non-destructive testing (NDT) based on the electric impedance tomography (EIT) were damped walls. Wall moisture and related salinity or mycosis are an important problem for buildings and people's health. The humidity changing along the wall height and depth creates non-homogenous testing environment in which the object property - conductivity - varies together with one ore more co-ordinates. The boundary element method (BEM) with implemented functionally graded materials (FGM) was used to solve the EIT forward problem. Due to taking measurements only from the object surface, which is typical of BEM a very convenient tool for NDT is received. The calculation results obtained from BEM were compared with those from the EIT measurements made on 26 electrodes. Those were again verified with the drying-weighing method for samples taken from bore-holes. Some theoretical aspects and the practical results mentioned above are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Horizontal centrifugal casting is an effective method for the production of hollow metal with good mechanical properties, low defect, cast to size and relatively cheap. The ability of a metal to satisfy the above requirements highly depends on its microstructure. In this study, the relationship between microstructural parameters such as grain size and the amount of phases with bulk hardness of SnCu4Pb3 is concerned in three areas of the product. Consequently, to achieve the desired hardness of the product in a particular area, the interaction of two factors of the microstructure including, grain size and particles amount of the hard intermetallic compositions (Cu6Sn5) should be noted.

In this study, finite difference method is used for the numerical analysis of the transient heat transfer analysis of a convective-radiative fin with functionally graded materials under the influence of Lorentz force is presented. Three cases of developed nonlinear thermal models of linear, quadratic, exponential and power-law variations of thermal conductivity are considered. The accuracy of the developed numerical code is verified as the results of the numerical solutions established good agreements with the results of the exact analytical solutions. Through the numerical solutions, parametric studies are carried out. From the results, it is shown that increase in radiative and magnetic field parameters as well as in-homogeneity index improve the thermal performance of the fin. Also, the transient responses reveal that the FGM fin with linear-law and power-law function shows the slowest and fastest thermal responses, respectively. This study will provide a very good platform for further studies on the design of extended surfaces where the surrounding fluid is influenced by a magnetic field.

In this contribution a problem of heat conuction in a laminate with functionally graded macrostructure is considered. This composite is made of two components, which re non-periodically distributed in laminae with constant thickess. Macroscopic (effective) properties of this composite are continuously varied along an axis perpendicular to laminae. In this note an averaged model of heat conduction is applied. This model is based on concepts of the tolerance averaging technique, cf. Woźniak and Wierzbicki |9|.

Opis:
The simplified approach to the modelling of low cycle fatigue (LCF) of functionally graded materials (FGM) based on the continuum mechanics is presented. The fatigue damage model takes into account the mechanical part of the load and a constant service temperature. The concept of FGM as a particle-reinforced metal-matrix composite with gradual change of the reinforcement fraction is used. The FGM is considered as a material consisting of homogeneous layers containing different volume fractions of the reinforcement. The variation of the reinforcement fraction changes the material properties for each layer. The different material properties are obtained according to modified rule of mixture. Since the fatigue damage of metal matrix composites is strongly influenced by the inelastic deformation of the metallic matrix, the constitutive equations of LCF damage model are taken into consideration. The combined isotropic/kinematic hardening model with linear behaviour of isotropic and kinematic parts of hardening is adopted. The damage scalar parameter is associated with the plastic energy dissipation which is used to update the material properties. The fatigue damage model presented in this paper is applied to the fatigue damage analysis of the cooling channel of thruster used in space shuttles and rockets.

Wheel-rail thermoelastic contact problem is analysed and numerically solved in the paper. The surface of the rail is assumed to consist from layers having distinct constant material parameters and a functionally graded material layer between. Thermal and mechanical properties of the graded layer are dependent on its depth rather than constant as it is considered in the literature. Numerous laboratory experiments indicate that graded materials layers or coatings covering the conventional steel body can reduce the magnitude of contact and/or thermal stresses as well as the noise and the rolling contact fatigue. The contact phenomenon includes friction as well as frictional heat generation and wear. Quasistatic numerical approach is used to solve numerically this contact problem. Numerical results are provided and discussed.
