Nitric oxides emissions for a given engine will depend on charging air parameters. Change of air parameters in this method of reducing NOX emissions involves cooling the air and changes in pressure at the beginning of compression stroke. The process of cooling the scavenging air means decreases the inlet air temperature and at the same time decreases the maximum cylinder temperature. The paper presents the results of investigations concerning a new method used for predicting the allowable time of storage of biocomponents – FAME. The method was based on laboratory research carried out with the use of a storage tank simulator. The aging process was carried out in the conditions increasing the reaction rate – at high temperature. There are several methods/procedures used for predicting the allowable time of storage of fuels and biocomponents – FAME, but all of them are based on tests at the temperature so high that the mechanism of aging process is different than the one observed in storage tanks. It was assumed that the aging process could be divided into two stages: at the first stage, the aging precursors are created and at the second stage, precursors are converted into the fuel aging products. These products lead to changes in fuel properties. The kinetics of precursor creation determines the rate of all reactions, which lead to the final aging products. It was found that the rate of reaction at the first stage of fuel aging can be effectively increased by an increase in temperature and even relatively high temperature does not change the mechanism of the creation of aging precursors. The method that has been worked out makes it possible to control the mechanism of aging process during quick laboratory tests. The products of aging processes were detected with the use of the IR-VIS spectrometry. The allowable time of storage was determined for several FAME samples on the basis of quick laboratory tests. The results of laboratory quick tests were verified by comparing them with the results of the aging process of FAME in storage tanks. On the basis of the test results, the algorithm of allowable time of FAME storage calculation was worked out.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to examine the current views on the mechanism of the formation of a protective film by mineral fuels and biocomponents (FAMEs and alcohols). As the experimental data show, the ability of fuels / biofuels to form a protective film under different conditions is very important to the efficient operation of fuel pumps. The mating parts of pumps are protected against wear and seizure because of the interactions between the metal surfaces and the lubricant (fuel / biofuel) at the molecular level. The tribochemical research focuses on the tribochemical reactions of lubricating additives because the base fuel is frequently treated as a solvent only. Today, most fuels for CI engines contain FAME, a biocomponent that may differ in the chemical structure depending on the type and properties of the vegetable oil used. The current trend is to produce fuels from biomass hydrocarbons, which are blended with mineral diesel fuel. It has been found that the chemical structure of biohydrocarbons is responsible for changes in the lubricity of the blends. Lubricity is determined using a standard high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) test because of one parameter, i.e. the wear of the ball. The results of the authors’ previous studies were used to create a new model of the protective film formation by fuels containing biocomponents (oxygenates) and biohydrocarbons. The model makes it possible to describe the tribochemical processes quantitatively. The quantitative analysis is based on the parameter αi, which is the measure of reactivity of lubricating additives and/or biocomponents related to the properties of the mating parts and the operating conditions in a tribological system. The new approach to the mechanism of the protective film formation, based on the quantitative description of tribochemical reactions, enables us to begin research on new criteria for the lubricity of fuels containing lubricating additives and biocomponents.

Vision of depletion of fossil fuels and associated with the usage negative impact on the environment, resulted in increased interest in finding alternative sources of materials, which may be used to power internal combustion engines. Usage of biofuels to power diesel engines offers a wide range of benefits for the user and also the environment. Biodiesel interpreted as fatty acid methyl esters obtained from renewable resources by transesterification of fatty acids, can be used as an alternative fuel to petro-diesel, as well as pure fuel or as an additive to diesel. Due to its “renewable” origin and characteristics, such as biodegradability or lower emissions of toxic components in the exhaust gases, biodiesel is a highly attractive alternative to fossil fuels. Although it is possible to feed CI engines with pure biodiesel, many researchers points lot of, operational and related to combustion processes, problems with usage 100% biodiesel in modern engines, equipped with technologically advanced injection systems. In order to maintain best performance properties, a number of standards have been made. These standards clearly define the parameters that biodiesel must met to be used for powering CI engines. This paper presents comprehensive analysis of properties of pure biodiesel and its mixtures with diesel in terms of usage to feed modern CI engines. Also procedure of obtaining biodiesel, laboratory equipment and procedures were presented. A number of key parameters (density, viscosity, acid value, cold filter plugging point, oxidation stability, sulphur content and flash point) were examined for pure biodiesel and its mixtures. Tests were performed according to procedures outlined in the PN-EN 14214. Based on the results the utility of biofuels and their mixtures was presumed for use in compression ignition engines.

The demand to control the amount of oil discharged to the seawater is the consequence of increasing shipping activities. Oil products enter marine environment on daily basis in the form of fuels, engine oils or crude oils. Each of them have a significant impact on marine life and the coastal water management. Oil content influences many environmental factors, like water quality and bio-optical parameters (e.g. water-leaving radiance, inherent optical properties, seawater fluorescence). It should be measured on regular basis to avoid over or underestimation of those parameters. Currently there are several methods used to estimate the total hydrocarbon content in seawater, mostly based on fluorescence measurements. We present a unique method suitable to determine the concentration of oil products in two forms: the amount of dissolved oil and the amount of oil-in-water emulsion. The method consist of several steps: seawater sampling, vacuum filtering, extracting of oil in n-hexane, fluorescence measurements and calculation of oil concentration in comparison to the reference samples, i.e. the solutions of different types of crude oil in n-hexane. The results have been measured for the samples collected in Southern Baltic Sea during several ship cruises in 2012. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of presented method in the context of radiative transfer modelling and potential remote detection of dispersed oil.

Petroleum substances are a mixture of many hydrocarbons of various structures; some of them are toxic for marine organisms. In case of pollution of the aquatic environment, these compounds may enter seawater organisms and adversely affect gas exchange and inhibit photosynthesis. Therefore, it is important to take measures to reduce the emissions of these compounds into the aquatic environment and quickly to remove possible spills of uncontrolled pollution. Sorbents are materials that soak up oil from water. They are best suited for the absorption of oil – derived substances. They are used to absorb leaks in open and closed tanks, particularly in hard – to-reach places. Sorbents can be natural organic, natural inorganic or synthetic. Natural sorbents are divided to organic materials such as peat moss or wood products, and inorganic materials such as vermiculite or clay. Sorbents are available in a loose form, which includes granules, powder, chunks and cubes. Synthetic sorbents are used to wipe other oil spill recovery equipment such as skimmers and booms after a spill clean-up operation. The thesis deals with the issues related to the analysis of the possibility of using sorbents to combat oil pollution in port and coastal areas. The article discusses the types of pollution occurring in coastal waters, as well as the types of sorbents used and the forces and measures to combat pollution. The characteristic features of sorbents are rate of absorption and adsorption, oil retention and ease of application. Absorption tests were carried out and the best sorbents for combating oil pollution were selected.

Due to a growing demand for liquid fuels in Poland, there is a need to organize their transport and distribution. Companies involved in extraction, processing and distribution and wholesale of crude oil and its products, have been operating on the fuel market for almost one century. In Poland, 700-900 thousand tons of crude oil is extracted every year, whereas the demand of Polish oil refineries for this resource is 20 mln tons, yearly. This paper describes the liquid fuel distribution system and the quality of services available at the filling station known international oil company. Characterized demand for liquid fuels in terms of their kind on the Polish market, using the results of the Polish Organization of Oil Industry and Trade in 2012. As the description of the test stations and characterized the sale of liquid fuels (type and quantity of fuel sold). It provides guidance on the company's distribution and service quality. Using the available literature shows you how to evaluate the effectiveness and quality of the distribution system. In times of global crisis, it is advisable to seek to improve the sales of liquid fuels, better organize the transport of fuel to the station to meet the demand for liquid fuels using economic methods. The company, to which the station has developed a distribution system according to your requirements, set the quality level of customer service. These activities are aimed at by increasing the efficiency of distribution and quality of services to increase sales and increase cooperation with regular customers.
