Natural gas is one of the potential combustion engine fuels whose proportion in the overall energy balance is expected to increase. Owing to some of its properties, its use requires a dual-fuel supply system; thus, the use of natural gas as a fuel for diesel engines is currently limited. Systems that supply gas fuel to diesel engines do not usually interfere with the engine control system. This solution significantly reduces system-installation costs. However, as demonstrated in the present study, it considerably changes the course of the combustion process, which increases thermal and mechanical loads. In this case, the combustion process can be controlled by changing the liquid fuel injection pressure or advancing the injection angle. This, however, requires interference with the engine control system.

The struggle against global warming necessitates the search for new sources of energy, which limit the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Among various fuels used to supply energy nowadays, the importance of natural gas is constantly growing. This is caused by the fact that this fuel is characterised by the lowest share of coal among all fossil fuels. Because of its properties, natural gas can be used directly to power spark-ignition engines. The use of this fuel for compression-ignition engines on the other hand is limited due to the high autoignition temperature of methane. Currently, research is being conducted in numerous centres on the possibility of using fuel gases to power CI engines operating in a dual-fuel system. The present article discusses the impact of the share of CNG in the supply dose on the operation of a CI engine. An engine with the Common Rail injection system programmed for mono-fuel operation was used in the research. Based on the conducted tests it has been proved that supplying this type of engine with fuel gas considerably changes the course of the combustion process, which is caused by the fact that the gas and air mixture present in the combustion chamber starts burning now of the autoignition of the first portion of liquid fuel. The obtained test results confirm the necessity to change the injection parameters of the pilot dose of diesel fuel (the timing angle of injection and the pressure of fuel) in cases when this type of engine operates in a dual-fuel system.

In recent years the use of alternative fuels based, among other things, on vegetable oil is causing increasing concern, which is also observed in our country. Such fuels have different physical and chemical properties (especially viscosity) with reference to the standard diesel fuel. Therefore it is important to know the effect of the additive of biocomponents on fuel injection process, in particular of its parameters, which play an important role in the combustion process and formation of pollutions in exhaust gases. In the paper is presented the test results of selected parameters of the injection process executing by four different electromagnetically controlled injectors using diesel fuel without the biocomponents and mixtures of such fuel with esters of rapeseed oil (FAME). Investigations were carried out on a specially prepared test stand which enables the measurement of fuel delivery and fuel returning from the injector together with its density and temperature. Additionally, beside mentioned parameters, there were recorded high-speed courses of pressure in the high-pressure pipe behind the rail and before the injector. Next, using a system of AVL Visioscope, the fuel injection into the visualization chamber filled with fuel was recorded. It determined the basic parameters of the fuel spray. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of fuel type on the injection process executed by the injectors with different constructional parameters.

The storage supply systems of Common Rail type are characterized by high possibilities in shaping the rate of injection. The possibility to implement multi-injection at high pressure, easiness of adapting the system to the engine, relatively easiness of compensation the arrangement of injector parameters resulting from work tolerance, as well as easiness of making changes in the electronic engine controller enabling the production of engines with various performances, cause that type of these solutions currently are widely used injection systems in diesel engines. Injection system should be characterized above all by high precision fuel dosing into engine cylinders, the accuracy in starts controlling of individual phase of injection, repeatability and reliability and durability, as well as the up keep of these parameters for long time during operating duration. Fuel injection system works in difficult conditions resulting from high pressure, vibrations, electromagnetic interference affecting electronic executive systems and high temperatures. Especially the injector and injection pipes are open to high temperatures. The dimensions of used elements are also important. The article presents selected results concerning the effect of the length of high-pressure pipes on injection process parameters such as fuel amount, overflow in injector, and the fuel pressure course in injection pipe in front of electromagnetic injector socket. The study was conducted with test stand with electronic measurement system of fuel amount. The tests were made at different pressures in the rail and for different durations of the injector opening.

Modern marine Diesel prime movers are equipped with so called ‘common rail’ as a part installed in the fuel injection system. This kind of design, gives a possibility to control fuel injection process in ways which were not available to carry out on conventionally designed engines. During the ship operation with a reduced speed and reduced load of the main engine, especially under the “Super Slow Steaming” conditions the waste heat recovery process in exhaust gas boiler is being disturbed. In the article, there is presented a possibility to increase the steam production of the waste heat boiler by interference in the fuel injection pattern for the engine. For the selected system “low speed main engine – smoke tube exhaust gas boiler” the test session has been carried out under the real ambient and operational condition of the ship to verify described possibility. Obtained results have been presented.

The article presents the laboratory tests results of the influence of the diesel oil content in a mixture with rapeseed oil on the operating parameters of a diesel engine with the CommonRail fuel supply system. Fuel mixtures with a rapeseed content of 0%, 50%, 70%, 100% were used. The article presents the results of tests carried out for various configurations of the object. The measurements included tests of exhaust gases: the content of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides as well as specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature. As a result of the research, it was noticed that the use of rapeseed oil causes a significant increase in fuel consumption and an increase in emissions. At a crankshaft speed of 2500 rpm and a torque generated by the engine crankshaft of 12 Nm, the specific fuel consumption for a 0% rapeseed content is 310 g/kWh. For the same engine operating conditions and the same rapeseed content of the fuel, the fuel consumption for 100% rapeseed content is 330 g/kWh. For the same engine operating parameters, analysis of the carbon dioxide content in the exhaust gas yields a value of 7.8x104 ppm for a rapeseed content of 0%. For the same engine operating conditions and for the oilseed rape content in the fuel is 100% 8.4x104 ppm. The mathematical models describing the effects of engine operating parameters and rapeseed oil content in the mixture on the observed values were created with the Scilab program. The degree of agreement of the determined mathematical models was checked by calculating the coefficient of determination (R2). The results are shown in 3D figures.

W artykule przedstawiono ocenę wpływu chemicznych zanieczyszczeń zawartych w oleju napędowym na parametry pracy turbodoładowanego silnika o zapłonie samoczynnym. Zakres prac obejmował przygotowanie paliwa, specjalnie zanieczyszczonego, zwłaszcza związkami metali, które mogą zostać wprowadzone zarówno w procesie produkcji paliwa, jak i eksploatacji silnika. Przeprowadzono analizę spektralną paliwa. W dalszej kolejności wykonano trwałościowe badania silnika, które miały na celu wyznaczenie przebiegów takich wielkości jak: mocy i momentu obrotowego silnika, godzinowego i jednostkowego zużycia paliwa oraz ciśnienia doładowania. Pracę podzielono na etapy, które obejmowały pracę silnika zasilanego zanieczyszczonym paliwem, pracę silnika zasilanego zanieczyszczonym paliwem z oczyszczonymi rozpylaczami, pracę silnika zasilanego czystym paliwem z oczyszczonymi rozpylaczami. W każdym etapie rejestrowano zmiany maksymalnej mocy silnika. Wykonano analizy spektralne osadów z rozpylacza. Przedstawiono analizy porównawcze parametrów pracy silnika.
This paper presents an assessment of the impact of chemical pollutants in diesel fuel on the parameters of the diesel super charged engine. The scope of work included preparation of fuel, especially polluted, especially metal compounds, which can be implemented in both the production of fuel and engine life. Spectral analysis was carried out of the diesel fuel. Subsequently engine durability test was performed, which aimed to appoint registration courses of parameters such as: power and torque, hourly and specific fuel consumption and boost pressure. The work is divided into stages, which included the work of contaminated fuel powered engine, the work of contaminated fuel powered engine with cleaned nozzles, powered engine run clean fuel with cleaned nozzles. At each stage changes in the maximum engine power was recorded. Spectral analyzes of sediments from the nozzles was carried out. The paper presents a comparative analysis of engine operating parameters.

The paper presents a new methodology for testing common rail fuel injectors, which extends the standard diagnostic procedure to include the analysis of the resultant fields of dosed fuel. The calculations were made on the basis of Gaussian formulas, also known as the shoelace formula. Their implementation in the digital environment was convenient from the practical side, as it eliminated the need to modify the test bench software. Thanks to the easy modification, the presented algorithms can be used in testing fuel injectors of other types or generations, for which clear assessment and verification of the technical condition is sometimes difficult. It is not required for this to increase the number of measuring points of the active experiment, which is one of the greatest advantages of the proposed solution.
W artykule przedstawiono nową metodykę testowania wtryskiwaczy common rail, która rozszerza standardową procedurę diagnostyczną o analizę wynikowych pól dawkowanego paliwa. Obliczenia prowadzono w oparciu o wzory Gaussa, określane również mianem formuły sznurowadła. Ich implementacja w środowisku cyfrowym była wygodna od strony praktycznej, gdyż wyeliminowała konieczność modyfikacji oprogramowania stołu probierczego. Dzięki łatwej modyfikacji prezentowane algorytmy można wykorzystać w badaniach wtryskiwaczy innych typów czy generacji, dla których jednoznaczna ocena i weryfikacja stanu technicznego bywa utrudniona. Nie jest przy tym wymagane zwiększanie liczby punktów pomiarowych eksperymentu czynnego, co stanowi jedną z największych zalet proponowanego rozwiązania.

The article presents a simplified methodology for testing Denso common rail electromagnetic injectors, which was based on an adjustment of idling fuel dosage. In order to determine the parameters significantly affecting this process, the design of experiments technique (DoE) was applied. Due to the non-linear course of the rates characteristics obtained on the diagnostic test bench, the trivalent fractional plan was used. Analysis of computational data has shown that the generated parabolic model is well suited to the actual measurement results, as the injector dosage is slightly out of projected values. The calculations were carried out in the STATISTICA computer program, which takes into account the specificity of the experimental theory methods and is one of the most universal tools available on the market. Innovation is the effective implementation of the proposed methodology in the repair process, which has not been taken into account in this regard yet.

The paper presents the author's own method for testing piezoelectric common rail fuel injectors, which for many years were considered non-repairable components. This was mainly due to the lack of availability of spare parts and dedicated measuring equipment, enabling full diagnostics under test bench conditions. As a result, their workshop and laboratory servicing was very limited, as effective disassembly concerned basically only the plunger and barrel assembly (needle with nozzle) for selected reference models. The situation has now improved to such an extent that an author’s own regeneration procedure has been proposed with the replacement of the most important controls and actuators. The tests were carried out on the example of Siemens VDO Continental PCR 2.3 fuel injectors from one engine, listing the most important stages of this process, including the correction of fuel dosage and returns.

The paper presents the methodology for testing Common Rail fuel injectors, which involved extending standard test procedures with additional measurement points and introducing a linear regression coefficient as a new diagnostic parameter. This allowed for a more precise checking of the fuel dosage method, as the active experiment was conducted at a wider range of nozzle opening times (actuation). The obtained results were used in the calculation stage, which was transferred to the popular spreadsheet environment. This eliminates the need to modify the test bench software. The proposed solution should be particularly useful in problematic situations in which a clear assessment of the technical condition of the fuel injector remains difficult, as shown in the example.
W artykule przedstawiono metodykę badań wtryskiwaczy common rail, która polegała na poszerzeniu standardowych procedur testowych o dodatkowe punkty pomiarowe i wprowadzeniu współczynnika regresji liniowej jako nowego parametru diagnostycznego. Pozwoliło to na bardziej precyzyjne sprawdzenie sposobu dawkowania paliwa, gdyż eksperyment czynny prowadzono przy szerszym zakresie czasów otwarcia rozpylacza (wysterowania). Uzyskane wyniki wykorzystano w fazie obliczeniowej, którą przeniesiono do środowiska popularnego arkusza kalkulacyjnego. W ten sposób wyeliminowano konieczność modyfikacji oprogramowania stołu probierczego. Proponowane rozwiązanie powinno być szczególnie przydatne w sytuacjach problematycznych, w których jednoznaczna ocena stanu technicznego wtryskiwacza pozostaje utrudniona, co pokazane zostało na przykładzie.

The paper presents the methodology of testing common rail fuel injectors, which consisted in extending the standard diagnostic procedures with the analysis of the resulting fuel delivery fields. The calculations were carried out in a popular spreadsheet, using Gauss's formulas (the so-called shoelace formula). The paper presents a method of testing piezoelectric fuel injectors in modern common rail systems, which allows them to be repaired almost to the full extent. The obtained results indicate that this process can be effectively carried out, even taking into account the existing technological limitations. The most important stages of the implemented activities are specified, first of all the scope of required maintenance activities in the pre- and post-assembly stages, as well as the types of diagnostic tests carried out on separate test benches. Although the presented analysis concerns a specific example, individual conclusions and observations can be applied to fuel injectors from other manufacturers, in which the actuator is not replaceable.

The paper presents an example of regeneration of a common rail piezoelectric fuel injector, which was carried out with using used parts. The most important stages of maintenance activities are listed, as well as the types of diagnostic tests performed on separate test benches. The obtained results indicate that this process can be effectively carried out with existing technological problems and lack of support from the manufacturer. At the same time, it was shown that, contrary to popular belief, cannibalisation does not have to be limited only to minor elements, but also to key components important from the point of view of the satisfactory technical condition and correct working of the fuel injector during further operation.
