Rotating element bearings are the backbone of every rotating machine. Vibration signals measured from these bearings are used to diagnose the health of the machine, but when the signal-to-noise ratio is low, it is challenging to diagnose the fault frequency. In this paper, a new method is proposed to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio by applying the Asymmetric Real Laplace wavelet Bandpass Filter (ARL-wavelet-BPF). The Gaussian function of the ARL-wavelet represents an excellent BPF with smooth edges which helps to minimize the ripple effects. The bandwidth and center frequency of the ARL-wavelet-BPF are optimized using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Spectral kurtosis (SK) of the envelope spectrum is employed as a fitness function for the PSO algorithm which helps to track the periodic spikes generated by the fault frequency in the vibration signal. To validate the performance of the ARL-wavelet-BPF, different vibration signals with low signal-to-noise ratio are used and faults are diagnosed.

This work presents an analysis of vibration signals for bearing defects using a proposed approach that includes several methods of signal processing. The goal of the approach is to efficiently divide the signal into two distinct components: a meticulously organized segment that contains relatively straightforward information, and an inherently disorganized segment that contains a wealth of intricately complex data. The separation of the two component is achieved by utilizing the weighted entropy index (WEI) and the SVMD algorithm. Information about the defects was extracted from the envelope spectrum of the ordered and disordered parts of the vibration signal. Upon applying the proposed approach to the bearing fault signals available in the Paderborn university database, a high amplitude peak can be observed in the outer ring fault frequency (45.9 Hz). Likewise, for the signals available in XJTU-SY, a peak is observed at the fault frequency (108.6 Hz).

To meet the needs of future wireless optical networks, this paper introduces a high-speed, hybrid multiplexed, coherent free-space optical (FSO) communication system that integrates an orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed signal with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique. Two independent QAM polarized beams, each carrying in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) phase 16-QAM-OFDM modulated data, are combined using mode division multiplexing (MDM) to increase the capacity of the proposed system. The reason of choosing OFDM is its capability to support higher data rate, and mitigating intersymbol interference (ISI). The signal is detected using a coherent detection-based digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm at the receiver end. The proposed hybrid FSO system is evaluated in low and heavy dust environments using bit error rate (BER), link distance, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), and received optical power performance matrices. The simulation results demonstrate the successful transmission of a 120 Gb/s single carrier over the longest link ranges of 1.5 and 0.40 km, respectively, under low and heavy dust weather environments below the signal degradation threshold value (forward error correction (FEC) limit) of BER 2.2 × 10–3 in strong turbulent conditions.

Earlier publications of the paper authors have shown that the use of code keying mixed with the CW FM sound signal allows the significant reduction in the distance measurement error, compared to classic silent CW FM sonar. In addition to the code modulation parameters, the magnitude of this error is influenced by the received input acoustic noise. The article shows the dependence of the input signal-to-noise ratio and the sound signal parameters on the target distance measurement error and the detection conditions, such as the output signal-to-noise ratio and the side lobe level. The results of the analysis were compared to the same parameters of the CW FM silent sonar without code modulation.

A review of the existing literature shows that modern pulsed eddy current (PEC) technique for flaw detection in aircraft structure inspection is typically carried out in aperiodic mode. At the same time, the unstable characteristic points of the EC signal usually used as informative parameters can restrict the potential of this excitation mode due to significant measurement errors. This article considers an advanced PEC method of NDT based on the oscillatory mode. To obtain the conditions concerned with different modes of EC probe response oscillations, an equivalent scheme of the "testing object - EC probe" system was developed and analyzed. The frequency and attenuation coefficient of natural oscillations are proposed as the informative parameters of the probe signals. The obtained mathematical model of the probe signals allows for the dependence of proposed signal parameters on the characteristics of the testing object to be evaluated. Herein, we first develop algorithmic software for determining and analyzing the discrete amplitude and phase characteristics of PEC NDT signals based on the simulation results. The errors of the natural frequency oscillations and the attenuation coefficient determination as well as the optimal time for its determination are analyzed in order to minimize the possible errors. Next, the proposed informative parameters are experimentally investigated using a set of specimens. The obtained results confirm the possibility of the proposed methodology to enhance the inspection procedures related to the electrical conductivity and geometric parameters measurements as well as the detected defect sizing.
Przegląd istniejącej literatury wskazuje, że nowoczesna technika impulsowych prądów wirowych (PEC) do wykrywania wad w inspekcji konstrukcji lotniczych jest zwykle prowadzona w trybie aperiodycznym. Przy tym, niestabilne punkty charakterystyczne w sygnale prądów wirowych, które zwykle są używane jako parametry informacyjne, mogą ograniczać potencjał tego trybu wzbudzenia ze względu na znaczne błędy pomiarowe. W niniejszym artykule rozważano zaawansowaną metodę PEC dla badań nieniszczących (NDT) opartą na trybie oscylacyjnym. W celu uzyskania warunków związanych z różnymi trybami oscylacji odpowiedzi sondy prądów wirowych, opracowano i przeanalizowano równoważny schemat układu „obiekt badany - sonda”. Jako parametry informacyjne dla sygnałów brano częstotliwość i współczynnik tłumienia drgań własnych.Tak powstały model matematyczny sygnałów pozwala na ocenęzależności proponowanych parametrów sygnałów od właściwości obiektu badanego. Najpierw na podstawie wyników symulacji opracowano algorytmiczne oprogramowanie do wyznaczania i analizy dyskretnych charakterystyk amplitudowych i fazowych sygnałów PEC NDT. Analizowano błędy wyznaczania częstotliwości drgań własnych oraz współczynnika tłumienia, a także optymalny czas jego wyznaczania w celu minimalizacji możliwych błędów. Następnie, zaproponowane parametry informacyjne badano eksperymentalnie z wykorzystaniem zestawu próbek. Otrzymane wyniki potwierdzają możliwość zastosowania proponowanej metody do usprawnienia procedur inspekcyjnych związanych z pomiarami przewodności elektrycznej, parametrów geometrycznych oraz oceny rozmiarów wykrywanych defektów.

The topology of low-voltage distribution systems changes with the load or the on/off position of the circuit switch. This will affect power flows, losses, and so on. This paper submits a new method to identify the topology of a low-voltage feeder using the injection high-frequency signal. An inductor can block the high-frequency signal. It can change the propagation direction of the injected high-frequency signal to make it propagate unidirectionally along the low-voltage feeder. By injecting a 5 MHz sinusoidal signal from the upstream direction of the low-voltage feeder, all the line segments and devices on the feeder can be identified. The wavelength of the high-frequency signal is short. The wavelength of the 5 MHz signal is 60 meters. Through the delay of different observation points on the feeder, the length of the line section can be roughly calculated. The high- frequency signal has an obvious reflection on the feeder. Using this feature, we can roughly calculate the length of the line segment. The correctness of the method is demonstrated by MATLAB simulation verification.

The article presents the issues of interpretation of non-stationary vibroacoustic diagnostic signals. The reasons of the incomplete usefulness of the traditional analysis solely in the field of time or frequency for such cases are explained. The use of time-frequency methods is presented as the proposed solution. The literature was reviewed in aspect of the methods currently used or on which the research is carried out. Older applications, such as the short-time Fourier transform and more complex and contemporary applications such as the Hilbert-Huang transform, are mentioned. Further development directions were also assessed, taking into account the combination of methods and the use of artificial neural networks, assessing the latter as giving the greatest potential in aspect of the evolution of signal processing methods.
W artykule zaprezentowano problematykę interpretacji niestacjonarnych wibroakustycznych sygnałów diagnostycznych. Wyjaśniono przyczyny niepełnej przydatności tradycyjnej analizy wyłącznie w dziedzinie czasu lub częstotliwości dla takich przypadków. Jako proponowane rozwiązanie przedstawiono wykorzystanie metod czasowo-częstotliwościowych. Dokonano przeglądu literatury w aspekcie metod obecnie wykorzystywanych lub nad którymi prowadzone są badania. Wymieniono zarówno zastosowania starsze jak krótkoczasowa transformata Fouriera oraz bardziej złożone i współczesne jak transformata Hilberta-Huanga. Dokonano również oceny dalszych kierunków rozwoju z uwzględnieniem kombinacji metod oraz wykorzystania sztucznych sieci neuronowych oceniając te ostatnie jako dające największy potencjał w aspekcie ewolucji metod przetwarzania sygnałów.

At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) dominated navigation in air, sea, and land. Then, medium-range and long-range terrestrial navigation systems (TNSs) ceased to be developed. However, with the development of GNSS jamming and spoofing techniques, the TNSs are being re-developed, such as the Enhanced Loran. The Polish Ministry of Defense plans to develop and implement a medium-range backup navigation system for the Polish Navy which will operate in the Baltic coastal zone. This plan is a part of the global trend. This paper presents the concept of a reserve TNS (RNS) that is based on the signal Doppler frequency (SDF) location method. In 2016, the concept of the RNS, which is based on stationary radio beacons located on coastal lighthouses, has been presented. From the military viewpoint, the use of the mobile radio beacons, which may change their location, is more justified. Therefore, the paper presents an idea of using the mobile beacons for this purpose. In this paper, effectiveness of the mobile RNS is shown based on simulation studies.

This paper presents a new simple and accurate frequency estimator of a sinusoidal signal based on the signal autocorrelation function (ACF). Such an estimator was termed as the reformed covariance for half-length autocorrelation (RC-HLA). The designed estimator was compared with frequency estimators well-known from the literature, such as the modified covariance for half-length autocorrelation (MC-HLA), reformed Pisarenko harmonic decomposition for half-length autocorrelation (RPHD-HLA), modified Pisarenko harmonic decomposition for half-length autocorrelation (MPHD-HLA), zero-crossing (ZC), and iterative interpolated DFT (IpDFT-IR) estimators. We determined the samples of the ACF of a sinusoidal signal disturbed by Gaussian noise (simulations studies) and the samples of the ACF of a sinusoidal voltage (experimental studies), calculated estimators based on the obtained samples, and computed the mean squared error (MSE) to compare the estimators. The errors were juxtaposed with the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). The research results have shown that the proposed estimator is one of the most accurate, especially for SNR>25dB. Then the RC-HLA estimator errors are comparable to the MPHD-HLA estimator errors. However, the biggest advantage of the developed estimator is the ability to quickly and accurately determine the frequency based on samples collected from no more than five signal periods. In this case, the RC-HLA estimator is the most accurate of the estimators tested.

In this paper, an innovative active seat suspension system for vehicles is presented. This seat suspension prototype is built with a shear guidance mechanism, an air spring, a hydraulic shock absorber and end-stop buffers. The acceleration particular signals are measured by using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) placed on the seat and the human head. As the excitation, the horizontal vibrations are applied. As an alternative to the classical Fourier approach, the Wavelet Transfer Function (WTF) is introduced to describe the effectiveness of particular seat suspension. In both of the system cases, the human head reaction is investigated by using the Matlab package.

The work considers the applicability of signals coming from rotor-mounted sensors in machine diagnostics. In the experiments, such sensors were implemented by piezoelectric patches bonded to the surface of a shaft. The laboratory stand also included more common sensors: laser sensors that measured the displacement of the central disc, as well as accelerometers mounted on the supports. The signals measured are analysed using the so-called full FFT method and the spectra are compared. The results show that the signals from piezoelectric sensors can be processed so that their spectral content is similar to typical spectra obtained using stator-mounted sensors.

To overcome the detrimental influence of impulse noise in power line communication and the trap of scarce prior information in traditional noise suppression schemes , a power iteration based fast independent component analysis (PowerICA) based noise suppression scheme is designed in this paper. Firstly, the pseudo-observation signal is constructed by weighted processing so that single-channel blind separation model is transformed into the multi-channel observed model. Then the proposed blind separation algorithm is used to separate noise and source signals. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by experiment simulation. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm has better separation effect, more stable separation and less implementation time than that of FastICA algorithm, which also improves the real-time performance of communication signal processing.

A novel scheme for photonic generation of broadly tunable radio frequency signal using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is demonstrated. A continuous wave emitted from the laser diode is modulated by a Mach–Zehnder modulator, then the modulated optical carrier is injected into the RSOA. Due to the four-wave mixing effect in the RSOA, the limited frequency components of the modulated signal are expanded, which directly lead to the generation of a wide frequency comb. Two optical tunable bandpass filters are parallelly connected to select the desired sidebands, which are launched into a photodetector or photomixer to generate radio frequency signal by beating. Using the proposed method, the bandwidth of generated radio frequency signal can range from 20 to 300 GHz.

The human voice is one of the basic means of communication, thanks to which one also can easily convey the emotional state. This paper presents experiments on emotion recognition in human speech based on the fundamental frequency. AGH Emotional Speech Corpus was used. This database consists of audio samples of seven emotions acted by 12 different speakers (6 female and 6 male). We explored phrases of all the emotions – all together and in various combinations. Fast Fourier Transformation and magnitude spectrum analysis were applied to extract the fundamental tone out of the speech audio samples. After extraction of several statistical features of the fundamental frequency, we studied if they carry information on the emotional state of the speaker applying different AI methods. Analysis of the outcome data was conducted with classifiers: K-Nearest Neighbours with local induction, Random Forest, Bagging, JRip, and Random Subspace Method from algorithms collection for data mining WEKA. The results prove that the fundamental frequency is a prospective choice for further experiments.

The most commonly used time-frequency representation of the analysis in voice signal is spectrogram. This representation belongs in general to Cohen’s class, the class of time-frequency energy distributions. From the standpoint of properties of the resolution, spectrogram representation is not optimal. In Cohen class representations are known which have a better resolution properties. All of them are created by smoothing the Wigner-Ville’a distribution characterized by the best resolution, however, the biggest harmful interference. The used smoothing functions decide about a compromise between the properties of resolution and eliminating harmful interference term. Another class of time-frequency energy distributions is the affine class of distributions. From the point of view of readability of analysis of the best properties are known so called Redistribution of energy caused by the use of a general methodology referred to as reassignment to any time-frequency representation. Reassigned distributions efficiently combine a reduction of the interference terms provided by a well adapted smoothing kernel and an increased concentration of the signal components.
