Opis:
The as-cast microstructure of ductile cast iron (DI) was investigated using light microscopy (LM) and SEM techniques. Further the influence of hot plastic extrusion at 1000°C with plastic strain in the range of 20-60-80% on the transformation of the as-cast microstructure and on the mechanical properties was studied. Besides this, the microstructure of DI subjected to hot extrusion after the fracture of the corresponding samples induced by compression tests was thoroughly investigated. It was found that compression had a dramatic influence on a shear deformation and hence shear fracture of the compressed samples. It was shown that the shear fracture of the hot deformed ductile iron is accompanied by the occurrence of a narrow zone of severe plastic deformation. The fracture surfaces of the extruded samples subjected to the tensile tests and the compression tests were examined.

Opis:
Since fatigue cracks nucleate and initiate generally at the surface of the rotary components such as blades and discs, the surface condition is the most important factor affecting the fatigue life. Surface scratches are suitable sites for stress concentrations and therefore the nucleation stage of fatigue cracks will be shortened. In the present work, the influence of surface roughness on the low cycle fatigue life behavior of nickel-based superalloy Rene®80 at the temperature of 900°C was evaluated. Results of low cycle fatigue tests (LCF) under strain-controlled condition at 900°C for R = εmin/εmax = 0 and strain rate of 2×10-3 s-1, at a total strain range of 1.2% showed an inverse relationship between fatigue strength and surface roughness of the specimens. In this study, increasing the surface roughness of Rene®80 from 0.2 μm to 5.4 μm led to the decline in the final LCF life from 127 cycles to 53 cycles which indicated a 58.3% reduction in fatigue life at the same condition. Fractography evaluation also exhibited that fatigue cracks initiated from the notch in the rough specimens, whereas in the smooth specimen fatigue cracks nucleated from the internal imperfections and carbides.

Opis:
In the context of PZL-130TC-II full-scale fatigue test, several strategies of fatigue loadings that create fracture surface markings were considered. One block of spectrum is made of 200 flights. By reordering those flights, a block which should create a fracture marker, was developed. It was very important that reordering the load spectrum or adding overloads or underloads did not change spectrum severity. Pilot tests of aluminium alloys specimens were carried out to finalise appropriate marker intervals before commencing full-scale tests. The experiment was conducted with the MTS machine with 810.23 system. The results and conclusions are presented within this paper.

The article will be focused on monitoring the influence of the structure on the fatigue properties of aluminium alloys for the casting of type Al-Mg. As an experimental material were used aluminium alloys EN AC 51200 and EN AC 51500, supplied in a cast state without a heat treatment. They were produced by the continuous casting method. These alloys were selected on the basis of the chemical composition, where the content of most alloying elements is comparable, only in the case of the concentration of magnesium are these alloys significantly different. Fatigue properties of aluminium alloys were tested by three-point bending cyclic loading. The fracture surface of the testing sample was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), where samples were observed on various stages of the fatigue process, their characteristics and differences of fracture surfaces.

Opis:
In this work, experiments were carried out to quantify the behaviour of friction stir welded (FSW) AA5082-AA7075 butt joints under tensile loading and completely reversed fatigue loading. Different samples were prepared to identify optimum tool rotational and travel speeds to produce FSW AA5082-AA7075 butt joints with the maximum fatigue life. ANOVA was performed, which confirmed that both tool speed nad tool rotation speed affect the tensile strength of the weld. The samples exhibit a considerable difference in their fatigue life and tensile strenght. This difference can be accounted to the presence of welding defects such as surface defects and porosity. S-N curve plotted for the sample shows a significantly high fatigue life at the lower stress ranges. Fracture surfaces were also analysed under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Study of the fracture surface of the sample that failed under fatigue loading showed that the surface was mainly divided in two zones. The first zone was the area of fatigue crack growth where each stress cycle, slowly and gradually, helped in the growth of crack. The second zone was the region of fast fracture where the crack growth resulted in the failure of the joint instantaneously. The fracture surface study of the sample that failed under tensile loading showed that the mode of failure was ductile in nature.

Opis:
In this paper, the results of the investigation into the fractured surface microstructure of the amorphous samples of Fe36 Co36 Si19 B5 Nb4 in the shape of rods of diameters: 1 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm in the as-cast state are presented. The samples were prepared by injection of molten alloy into cooled copper dies. The process of diffusion in the investigated material has a different speed depending on the temperature gradient within the volume of the rod. The atomic diffusion leads to the creation of different zones within the rod fracture: the zone in contact with the copper die, the intermediate fracture zone, and the zone in the vicinity of the rod core; the three zones have been found to exhibit different amorphous structures.

In order to study the effect of different surface crack parameters on the fracture failure of steel plate, the model was established by FEM. The results showed that the edge surface crack has the greatest influence on the fracture failure of the steel plate, and for non-edge surface cracks, the central surface crack has the greatest influence on the fracture failure of the steel plate. The larger the a/t and the smaller the a/c, the easier the steel plate fracture failure occurs. The a/c has a certain influence on the variation law of K and the position where Kmax appears.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of analysis of surface roughness parameters in the Krosno Sandstones of Mucharz, southern Poland. It was aimed at determining whether these parameters are influenced by structural features (mainly the laminar distribution of mineral components and directional distribution of non-isometric grains) and fracture processes. The tests applied in the analysis enabled us to determine and describe the primary statistical parameters used in the quantitative description of surface roughness, as well as specify the usefulness of contact profilometry as a method of visualizing spatial differentiation of fracture processes in rocks. These aims were achieved by selecting a model material (Krosno Sandstones from the Górka–Mucharz Quarry) and an appropriate research methodology. The schedule of laboratory analyses included: identification analyses connected with non-destructive ultrasonic tests, aimed at the preliminary determination of rock anisotropy, strength point load tests (cleaved surfaces were obtained due to destruction of rock samples), microscopic analysis (observation of thin sections in order to determine the mechanism of inducing fracture processes) and a test method of measuring surface roughness (two- and three-dimensional diagrams, topographic and contour maps, and statistical parameters of surface roughness). The highest values of roughness indicators were achieved for surfaces formed under the influence of intragranular fracture processes (cracks propagating directly through grains). This is related to the structural features of the Krosno Sandstones (distribution of lamination and bedding).

Opis:
Modern methods of testing materials require the use of the latest technologies and combining measurement and calculation methods. It is important to find a quantitative way of describing, among other things, the failures so that it can help to design with high accuracy. This paper studies loading orientations on crack shape and fracture surface changes. The advantage of the entire fracture surface method is simplicity and applicability in studies on other materials, shapes and loadings. A higher values of fracture surface parameters (Sx, Vx) was observed in failure specimens with lower σ/τ (B/T) ratios. It has been observed that largest crack lengths with a small number of cycles occur for loading combinations different then B=T. As well as analyzed surface parameters Sx, Vx, are higher for larger number of cycles to crack initiation (Ni) values.

Opis:
PVD coatings are widely used in the tool industry. They use hard materials, such as carbides, borides, and nitrides of metallic elements, because these materials have good wear resistance and stability at elevated temperatures. Titanium diboride-TiB2 is a very interesting compound used for coatings in the tool industry. The results of the analysis of research directions in the field of coatings and layers with special operating properties (high hardness, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and good corrosion resistance) indicate that coatings and layers based on TiB2 are one of the most effective materials that improve tool durability. The paper presents the mechanical properties of TiB2 coatings obtained using the magnetron sputtering method in the function of sputtering process power of TiB2 target. The paper includes hardness and Young' s modulus measurements performed with nanoindentation method, and phase composition analysis, and the evaluation of the microstructure and topography using a Hitachi TM3000 scanning electron microscope.
Analiza literatury w zakresie powłok funkcjonalnych (powłok o dużej twardości, dobrym przewodnictwie cieplnym i elektrycznym, dobrej odporności korozyjnej) wskazuje TiB2 jako jeden z najbardziej efektywnych materiałów zwiększających trwałość narzędzi przeznaczonych do obróbki powierzchniowej stopów metali nieżelaznych. W artykule przedstawiono właściwości mechaniczne powłok TiB2 otrzymanych z wykorzystaniem metody rozpylania magnetronowego w funkcji mocy rozpylania targetu TiB2. Artykuł zawiera pomiary twardości oraz modułu Younga, analizę struktury fazowej, badania mikrostruktury oraz badania odporności na pękanie cienkich powłok.
