In the present article I examine autobiographical works in which writers reveal their illnesses. I am interested not so much in the description of a givenailment, but rather in the embroilment resulting from being ill and from the persistent conflict between memory and forgetting. Becoming aware of the illness  turns out to be a critical point, forcing the writers to re-evaluate their own lives. Consequently, memory and forgetting assume a new status. I also attempt to juxtapose the universal nature of being ill and the intimacy of this experience; I point out the similarities and differences involved in dealing with illnesses, the common denominator of which seems to be the necessity of confronting the limits of memory and the expansiveness of forgetting.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the role modern apocrypha play in the processes of collective remembering. From the perspective of cultural studies the modern apocrypha can be seen not only as literary or religious texts but also as an important element of cultural autocommunication. And if we understand autocommunication as a crucial mechanism of cultural memory, we can describe intertextuality (which is a form of cultural autocommunication) as an autoimmune technique of preventing the basic cultural meanings from the oblivion. The canon is a basic tool of collective memory in the so called ‘literate cultures’ or ‘Cultures of the Book’. That is the reason why the apocrypha, which deal with canonical contents, build the unique set of texts playing an essential role in protecting the source myth and tradition from the ‘semiotic death’.

One of main features in financial investment problems is that the situation changes very often over time. Under this circumstance, in particular, it has been observed that additional learning plays an effective role. However, since the rule for classification becomes more and more complex with only additional learning, some appropriate forgetting is also necessary. It seemms natural that many data are forgotten as the time elapses. On the other hand, it is expected more effective to forget unnecessary data actively. In this paper, several methods for active forgetting are suggested. The effectiveness of active forgetting is shown by examples in stock portfolio problems.

This study uses authentic interviews from field research into the Roma people of Slovakia to search for partial answers to questions concerning the functioning of collective and individual memory of the marginalised ethnic group that to this day almost exclusively leans on oral presentation instead of written recordings when sharing stories and experiences between generations. Witnesses to wartime events are dying out. Their stories need to be reinterpreted. They are too often lost, however, in the chasm of oblivion caused by ostracisation, neglected education, politics and, above all, poverty. The state has failed in the past and continues to fail today, albeit differently, by enabling the process of forgetting.

Recognition that societies will not be able to build a future as long as they do not face the ‘demons of the past’ has become a kind of universal truth over the last decades of the 20th Century (Gibney et al., 2008, p. 1). This view, though challenging and ambiguous, is reflected in the globally present attempts to improve or rebuild relations within and between different communities at the domestic and international level. The question concerning, on the one hand, the essence and most essential elements and, on the other hand, the instruments and the limitations of rebuilding relations, as well as the political implications of those processes have become the broad area of interest and the discourse leading to significantly different ideas and solutions. The article aims at presenting different approaches referring to dealing with the conflicted and traumatized past both at the domestic and international level. Some selected instruments and methods which enable movement from a divided past towards a common future are discussed namely the strategy of engagement with the past versus the strategy of avoidance of the past. The special attention is paid to the notion of reconciliation understood as a process of rebuilding of relations through the multi-dimensional transformation of former adversaries after the period of violence and repression.

For the contemporary business, the crucial factor is making smart decisions on the basis of the knowledge hidden in stored data. Unfortunately,m traditional simple methods of data analysis are not sufficient for efficient management of modern enterprizes, because they are not appropriate for the huge and growing amount of the data stored by them. Additionally data usually comes continuously in the form of so-called data stream. The great disadvantage of traditional classification methods is that they assume that statistical properties of the discovered concept are being unchanged, while in real situation, we could observe so-called concept drift, which could be caused by changes in the probabilities of classes or/and conditional probability distributions of classes. The potential for considering new training data is an important feature of machine learning methods used in security applications (spam filtering or intrusion detection) or decision support systems for marketing departments, which need to follow the changing client behavior. Unfortunately, the occurrence of concept drift dramatically decreases classification accuracy. This work presents the comprehensive study on the ensemble classifier approach applied to the problem of drifted data streams. Especially it reports the research on modifications of previously developed Weighted Aging Classifier Ensemble (WAE) algorithm, which is able to construct a valuable classifier ensemble for classification of incremental drifted stream data. We generalize WAE method and propose the general framework for this approach. Such framework can prune an classifier ensemble before or after assigning weights to individual classifiers. Additionally, we propose new classifier pruning criteria, weight calculation methods, and aging operators. We also propose rejuvenating operator, which is able to soften the aging effect, which could be useful, especially in the case if quite ”old” classifiers are high quality models, i.e., their presence increases ensemble accuracy, what could be found, e.g., in the case of recurring concept drift. The chosen characteristics of the proposed frameworks were evaluated on the basis of the wide range of computer experiments carried out on the two benchmark data streams. Obtained results confirmed the usability of proposed method to the data stream classification with the presence of incremental concept drift.

Sentiment analysis is a useful tool in several social and business contexts. Aspect sentiment classification is a subtask in sentiment analysis that gives information about features or aspects of people, entities, products, or services present in reviews. Different deep learning models that have been proposed to solve aspect sen‐ timent classification focus on a specific domain such as restaurant, hotel, or laptop reviews. However, there are few proposals for creating a single model with high performance in multiple domains. The continual learn‐ ing approach with neural networks has been used to solve aspect classification in multiple domains. However, avoiding low, aspect classification performance in contin‐ ual learning is challenging. As a consequence, potential neural network weight shifts in the learning process in different domains or datasets. In this paper, a novel aspect sentiment classification approach is proposed. Our approach combines a trans‐ former deep learning technique with a continual learning algorithm in different domains. The input layer used is the pretrained model Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. The experiments show the efficacy of our proposal with 78 % F1‐macro. Our results improve other approaches from the state‐of-the-art.

Retrieval Induced Forgetting (RIF) refers to the fi nding that the retrieval of some items from memory (RP+) impairs the retrieval of related items (RP-). The RIF effect is indicated by a comparison of RP- with unrelated but also tobe- remembered items (NRP). Since RIF appears during intentional memorizing of words, therefore we checked whether it depends on attentional control (AC) involved in goal maintenance, and also if implicit evaluations of to-be-remembered (RP) contents moderate this process (causing e.g. inhibition). In three experiments, each including AC as the independent variable, we found AC to be related to the RIF effect. Only high but not low AC subjects showed the presence of RIF. The results of the affective priming procedure showed that implicit evaluations of NRP items moderate the relationship of high AC and the RIF effect. The explanation why temporarily devaluated NRP could enhance the RIF effect and suggestion concerning future research summarize the article.

Dzieciństwo i młodość są ważnym tematem w pamiętniku z epoki napoleońskiej. W artykule zamierzam zrekonstruować specyfikę i zanalizować pamięć obrazów dzieciństwa w jego najistotniejszych fazach granicznych w Trzy po trzy. Celem jest omówienie tego stanowiącego sumę gatunków (gawęda, pamiętnik, i in.) tekstu, deszyfrujące, jak autor uruchamia pamiętanie i zapominanie. Jak uruchamia on kategorię „pamięć wertykalna” (Proust), dającą gwarancję prawdziwości wspomnienia, wydobywającego się z wnętrza wspominającego, dla którego „niematerialne” zmysły woni, wzroku, słuchu pozwalają pamięci przez asocjację czuciową „odpominać” to, co istotne z dzieciństwa.
Childhood and youth are an important theme/topic in Fredro’s diary from the Napoleonic era. In this article, I intend to reconstruct the specificity and analyse the memory of images of childhood in its most crucial liminal phases in Trzy po trzy (Topsy Turvy Talk). The aim is to discuss this text, which constitutes the sum of genres (storytelling, diary, etc.), deciphering how the author starts remembering and forgetting. How he activates the category of “vertical memory” (Proust), which guarantees the veracity of recollection, emanating from within the recollector, for whom the “immaterial” senses of smell, sight, hearing allow memory, through sensory association, to “recollect” the essentials of childhood.

The aim of the article is to present the theatrical performance for children entitled Stories from Oblivion as a tool for shaping the cultural identity of a child and introducing the youngest audience to the subject of memory as an ethical category. In the research, the analysis of the content of the play is used and interpreted in the context of philosophical considerations of Paul Ricoeur concerning stories, time, memory and forgetting. Particular parts of the article concern: the pedagogical role of memory; Slavic mythology; stories as a narrative genre; memory and forgetting and their social consequences; identity and its shaping; educational values of the presented performance. Based on P. Ricoeur’s opinion on stories, memory and forgetting, as well as on B. Milerski’s pedagogical views, it was concluded that the content  of  the  analysed  performance  and  the  way  it  deals  with the above mentioned subjects can be an example of upbringing for memory and recognizing a story as a significant educational tool in the process of identity formation.
Celem artykułu jest prezentacja spektaklu teatralnego dla dzieci Opowieści z niepamięci jako narzędzia kształtowania tożsamości kulturowej dziecka oraz wprowadzenia najmłodszej widowni w tematykę pamięci jako kategorii etycznej. W badaniu wykorzystano analizę treści spektaklu i zinterpretowano go w kontekście filozoficznych rozważań Paula Ricoeura dotyczących opowieści, czasu, pamięci i zapominania. Poszczególne części artykułu dotyczą: pedagogicznej roli pamięci; mi- tologii słowiańskiej; opowieści jako gatunku narracyjnego; pamięci i zapominania oraz ich społecznych skutków; tożsamości i jej kształtowania; wychowawczych wartości prezentowanego przedstawienia. Opierając się na przekonaniach Ricoeura dotyczących opowieści, pamięci i zapominania, oraz poglądach pedagogicznych B. Milerskiego, stwierdzono, że treść omawianego spektaklu i sposób poruszania w nim wspomnianej tematyki mogą być przykładami wychowania do pamięci oraz uznania opowieści za znaczące narzędzie w procesie kształtowania tożsamości.

In his hermeneutics of memory, Ricoeur points to the dialectic character of the interrelation between remembering and forgetting. He abandons an understanding of forgetting as limited only to oblivion, or to deletion in the Bergsonian use of the term. He supplants the negativity of forgetting by the productivity of disremembering, and stretches forgetting to its reserve, to the dynamic unveiling of the details of past events, with varied degrees of truthfulness and accuracy. This article attempts to demonstrate that the positivity of forgetting in the context of reconciliation is a tangible possibility. Forgetting is viewed here as a positive, constructive faculty, which influences the future, makes it possible to create and shape it, and is opposed to a slavish adherence to memory anchored wholly in the past. The totality of the anchorage in the past results in an exclusive focus on remembering, and causes the impasse of being entrapped in a disconsolate past. We ascertain that forgetting is not a failure but rather a productive possibility, either self- -creative or purgative, to educate oneself and the Other towards a more promising future.

Since the (re) structuring collective memory always implies particular political processes, in the case of Ivan Goran Kovačić and his narrative poem The Pit (Jama), the fundamental text of the Partisan canon of Croatian literature, it may be divided into two periods with a transitional watershed of the 90s (or the disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) as a historical turning point. Post-Yugoslav revisionist processes of the memory of World War II, which then started, inevitably had to influence the “myth about Goran”, up to that time in the conventional memory constructed around three key points. The first was his leaving Zagreb, together with Vladimir Nazor, to join the Partisans; the second was the revelation of Ustasha crimes in the epic poem The Pit and third his death by a “chetnikʼs knife”, which he prophetically hinted at in his poem “My Tomb”. Furthermore, the critical reception of The Pit from its first edition takes place on two plans of expression – artistic (fine arts) and literary. These “two lives” of one epic poem had different destinies and also attached to themselves different memories including forgetting strategies of (re)structuring collective memory.

Este texto tem como objetivo refletir sobre os dilemas da memória e esquecimento presentes em relatos de sujeitos históricos que vivenciaram a experiência do deslocamento forçado. Para tanto, recorremos às narrativas de uma imigrante de origem polonesa, cuja trajetória pessoal foi marcada, de modo irreversível, pela experiência do recrutamento compulsório, no contexto da Segunda Guerra mundial. O registro de sua história de vida resultou de uma longa entrevista realizada a partir da metodologia da história oral, na qual ela fornece importantes elementos para refletir sobre a potencialidade das narrativas autobiográficas no exercício de reconstrução do passado, cujas imagens e representações emergem, sempre mediados pela relação interativa e inseparável com o tempo presente, no movimento dialético entre a história e a memória, a lembrança e o esquecimento, o silêncio e a narratividade, o dito e o sentido.
This text aims to reflect on the dilemmas of memory and forgetfulness present in reports by historical subjects who experienced the experience of forced displacement. For that, we resort to the narratives of an immigrant of Polish origin, whose personal trajectory was irreversibly marked by the experience of compulsory recruitment, in the context of the Second World War.The recording of her life story resulted from a long interview conducted from the methodology of oral history, in which she provides important elements to reflect on the potential of autobiographical narratives in the exercise of reconstructing the past, whose images and representations emerge, always mediated for the interactive and inseparable relationship with the present time, in the dialectical movement between history and memory, remembrance and forgetfulness, silence and narrativity, saying and meaning.

Pour vérifier l’hypothèse avancée que Dannemark réussit à illustrer le fonctionnement complexe de la mémoire, nous soumettons à l’examen les techniques de l’écriture, les dispositifs narratifs et de nombreuses constructions métaphoriques employées par l’auteur, et nous les décrivons en fonction des « instances mémorielles » (auteur, personnage, lecteur). Il se révèle que le roman n’est pas une simple variation sur le thème de la mémoire, ses mécanismes, mais qu’il contient une importante réflexion sur le processus de l’écriture, le jeu avec la fictivité de l’œuvre littéraire comprise, et l’acte de la lecture. Rappeler des souvenirs, rédiger des mémoires, écrire un roman et le lire, toutes ces activités ressemblent à un puzzle à reconstituer.
This paper deals with the theme of memory in the novel Mémoires d ’un ange maladroit by Francis Dannemark, a Belgian author writing in French. In order to verify the hypothesis that the writer succeeds in depicting the complex functioning of memory, we examine writing techniques, narrative devices and numerous metaphorical constructions used by the author, and describe them, taking into consideration “memory authorities” (author, hero, reader). The analysis proves that the novel is not a simple variation on memory and its mechanisms but also contains essential observations on the writing process, including the play with the fictionality of a literary work, and on the act of reading. Recollection, memoirs writing, novel writing, reading: all these activities resemble a puzzle.
