W pracy przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów maksymalnych naprężeń ścinających oraz zwięzłości podłoży leśnych, na których prowadzono zrywkę drewna w sposób wleczony, półpodwieszony i nasiębierny. Sprawdzano czy i w jaki sposób liczba przejazdów przy różnych metodach zrywki wpływają na zmiany analizowanych właściwości podłoży. Na wartości mierzonych parametrów istotnie wpływała liczba przejazdów ciągnika LKT po szlaku zrywkowym. Wykazano istotny wpływ sposobu zrywki na analizowane parametry gleby.
The study presents results of the maximum shear stresses and firmness measures of the forest grounds, on which logging was carried out by means of cable logging, skidding logging and forwarding logging. The study examined whether and how the number of crossings, at various methods of logging, influences the changes of the analysed ground properties. The number of crossings of the LKT tractor on a logging route considerably influenced the values of the measured parameters. Considerable influence of the logging method on the analysed soil parameters was indicated.

W pracy przedstawiono ocenę współpracy kół napędowych z podłożem leśnym w aspekcie strat energetycznych towarzyszących generowaniu siły napędowej. Badania przeprowadzono na drodze leśnej zlokalizowanej w Leśnictwie Chrząstawa. Badano opony 7,5-16, 36x13,5-15 i 400x55-22,5. Wyznaczone zostały przebiegi sprawności trakcyjnych w funkcji poślizgu koła. Stwierdzono, że największe wartości sprawności osiągała opona 36x13,5-15. Dla wszystkich opon zwiększanie obciążenia pionowego skutkowało wzrostem sprawności trakcyjnej, przy czym najmniejszą wartość przyrostu stwierdzono dla opony 36x13,5-15.
The work presents the evaluation of interaction between a drive wheel and forest grounds in terms of energy losses that accompany the generation of driving force. The tests were carried out on a forest road located in the Chrząstawa Forestry. 7.5-16, 36x13.5-15 and 400x55-22.5 tyres were tested. Traction efficiency courses in the function of wheel skidding were determined. It was found that the 36x13.5-15 tyre presents the highest value of efficiency. Increasing the vertical load for all tyres resulted in the increase of the traction efficiency, while the lowest value increase was observed in case of the 36x13.5-15 tyre.

The objective of this study was to estimate the edge effect on the species richness in agriculturally maintained forest-grassland boundaries of coniferous forest and to determine how species respond to a forest edge. We hypothesised that species number, cover of herbs and mosses is higher in the edge, and species penetrates from nearby grasslands into forest interior. The study was conducted in the Southwestern Lithuania. The edge effect on overall herbaceous species composition of coniferous forests was evaluated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. The species richness of herbs and mosses in the coniferous forest was highest in the forest edge and declined towards interior. The highest decrease in the number of species occurred within 0 to 5 m to the edge. The highest cover of herbs and mosses was in the forest edge and decreased towards the forest interior. CCA biplot showed a good correlation of overall species composition and the distance to the forest edge. Distribution of species along edge to interior gradient depended on the species response to different ecological factors. Ellenberg value of light was higher in the edge. Ellenberg value of nitrogen was higher in the forest interior.

Every year forest soils are enriched with nitrogen and phosphorus compounds due to the fall of leaves and litter of conifer needles, mineralization of ground cover and decaying tree roots, as well as precipitation. The process has been examined in two forest ecosystems: a mixed forest (plot I) and a young wood (plot II). The overall fall of duff collected in the young wood of the Słowinski National Park (plot II) has been 3.014 t/ha·year, which constitutes 69.35% of the fall collected in the mixed forest (plot I) on this territory (4.346 t/ha·year). The maximum intensity of duff fall occurred in autumn months and constituted 62.36% and 64.20% of annual fall respectively. Totally, 46.96 kg/ha·year of N and P were supplied to the soil of the plot I and 22.04 kg/ha·year in the case of the plot II. The precipitation enriched the soils of the mixed forest by 33.66 kg/ha·year of nitrogen and 1.19 kg/ha·year of phosphorus, the soils of the young wood – by 23.06 kg/ha·year of nitrogen and 0.92 kg/ha·year of phosphorus.
Każdego roku gleby leśne wzbogacane są związkami azotu i fosforu pochodzącymi z opadających liści i igliwia, mineralizacji runa leśnego, gnijących korzeni drzew i krzaków oraz opadów atmosferycznych. Procesy te badano w dwóch ekosystemach leśnych Słowińskiego Parku Narodowego: w lesie mieszanym (działka I) i borze swieżym (działka II). Ogólny opad ścioły zebrany w swieżym borze wynosił 3,014 t ha-1rok-1 i był mniejszy niż zebrany w lesie mieszanym (4,346 t ha-1rok-1). Najbardziej intensywny opad ścioły obserwowano w miesiącach jesiennych i stanowił on odpowiednio 62,36% i 64,20% rocznego opadu. Ogólnie w ten sposób wprowadzono 46,96 kg ha-1rok-1 azotu i fosforu do gleby działki I i 22,04 kg ha-1rok-1 do gleby działki II. Opad atmosferyczny wzbogacił gleby lasu mieszanego w 33,66 kg ha-1rok-1 azotu i 1,19 kg ha-1rok-1 fosforu, a gleby boru swieżego odpowiednio 23,06 kg ha-1rok-1 i 0,92 kg ha-1rok-1.

In recent years researchers have focused increasingly on climatic changes taking place in nature (increasing air temperature, decreasing precipitation totals). These imply changes in components of water balances and in practice changes in water relations both on the global and local scale. At present site overdrying is considered to be the biggest threat [Pierzgalski 2007]. The aim of the study is to present water relations in the forest swampy areas in a forest district (the Marianka Forest District) of the Siemianice Forest Experimental Station in hydrological years of 2005 and 2006. The investigations showed that analysed catchments, despite being located in swampy areas, are characterized by periods of water depletion in ditches. In analysed watercourses runoff was recorded from mid-November 2004 to the beginning of June 2005, while in the next hydrological year it was recorded again from mid-November, but this time longer to mid-June 2006. In relation to ground water of the catchment area a predictable relationship was observed of the water table level at the locations of observation wells. The wells located in the top sections of the catchment had water table the deepest below the ground level, while wells in valleys had water tables at the most shallow levels. It may also be stated that wells situated in higher areas (watershed), are characterized by a slightly bigger variation in the ground water table during the year than it was the case with wells located at lower points (in valleys). Both analyzed hydrological years (2005 and 2006) showed a similar pattern of ground water table at individual sites. Moreover, a marked cyclicity was recorded in the elevation of the water table, i.e. water level rising in autumn and lowering in summer months (as a result of changes in plant transpiration). The relationship of ground water levels with different forest sites found in the analyzed catchments confirms the dependence on the site moisture level variant. Water was lying at the most shallow levels in the ash-alder swamp forest site – a marshy site, while it was markedly the deepest in fresh mixed coniferous forest sites – a fresh site type. When analyzing changes in the ground water levels in terms of stand age classes we may clearly observe the seasonal variation and similar patterns of changes. Water lay the most shallow in stands of age classes V and VI. The level was significantly deepest in age class IV. The above dependencies pertained both to the hydrological year 2005 and 2006.

Nowadays, forest perception is multi-layered and often very subjective. Forest can have three basic functions: economic, social and protective. These functions are of varying importance for local communities. The paper analyses the significance of particular forest functions for the inhabitants of Czarna Białostocka commune. Factors that motivate respondents to visit the forest were analyzed. The evaluation assessed, among other things, the purpose and frequency of visits to forests, the type of resources extracted from forests and for what purposes they are used. The research tool was a questionnaire consisting of 11 questions. The research was conducted in autumn 2016 among 100 inhabitants of towns and villages adjacent to the forest areas of Czarna Białostocka commune. According to the conducted interviews, for the residents of Czarna Białostocka commune, the forest is used primarily for harvesting ground vegetation such as mushrooms, fruits and herbs. To a lesser degree, it is a place of rest and recreation.

A decomposition study was carried out on the leaf litters of Leucaena leucocaephala to determine the rate of decomposition of its leaves with respect to its placement on above or below the ground levels in L. leucocaephala plantations of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. In the study, leaf litter were randomly handpicked from the forest floor, of this, 40 g each were weighed into thirty (30) litter bags of 2 mm mesh size in which 15 were randomly placed on the forest floor (above-ground) and the remaining 15 were buried in the soil between 5-10 cm depth (below-ground). Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as percentage, while inferential statistics (simple linear regression) was used to determine relationships between various nutrient elements and days of decomposition (DOD). We noted that the percentage of mass loss of leaf litter increased with time in days after deposit and was higher (29.93%, 32.43 % and 33.25%, 41.65%) at 80 to 100 days of placement above- and below-ground, respectively. Moreover, the exchangeable basic cations and chemical compositions of litters were not consistent with respect to DOD. Regression analysis of nitrogen (N) and organic carbon (OC) showed that these elements significantly contributed to the high (86 %) overall decomposition of litter (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) below-ground level. It is, therefore, concluded that decomposition of leaf litters occur faster below ground than above ground within the forest plantation.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w dwóch mokrych pod względem opadów latach hydrologicznych 2000/2001 i 2009/2010 w zlewni śródleśnego oczka wodnego nr 5 usytuowanej na terenie Leśnego Zakładu Doświadczalnego Siemianice, w leśnictwie Laski. Zlewnia oczka nr 5 o powierzchni około 20 ha i lesistości 100% usytuowana w zlewni Pomianki, która jest lewobrzeżnym dopływem Prosny. W badanej zlewni przeważają siedliska świeże zajmujące łącznie 95% powierzchni. W terenie bezpośrednio przyległym do oczka występuje siedlisko lasu wilgotnego i lasu mieszanego wilgotnego. Największą powierzchnię zlewni zajmują gleby płowe zbrunatniałe oraz brunatne kwaśne typowe, o uziarnieniu piasku słabogliniastego. Uzyskane wyniki badań potwierdziły, że w ocenie zdolności retencyjnych siedlisk leśnych, poza zmianami retencji w 1m warstwie gleby, istotne są również zmiany zapasów wód gruntowych. Badania wykazały w obydwu analizowanych okresach przyrosty zapasów wody, przy czym w roku hydrologicznym 2009/2010 przyrost zapasów był wyższy od tej wielkości z pierwszego analizowanego roku (2000/2001) o 160 mm.
The paper presents the results of the researches carried out in two hydrological years 2000/2001 and 2009/2010. These two years were wet ones with high precipitation sums. The researches were carried out at the catchment of water pond No 5, located at Laski Forestry of Siemianice Experimental Farm. The area catchment of pond No 5 is about 20 ha and its forestation totals 100%. It is situated in a part of Pomianka catchment – left-side tributary of Prosna River. In the investigated catchment predominant fresh habitats spreading through 95% area. Moist broadleaved forest and moist mixed broadleaved forest are located in the area neighbouring to the pond. The haplic luisol and haplic cambisol (dystric) are predominant in soils of the catchment area. Whereas, loamy sand a predominant soil there . The researches and analyses confirmed that retention changes in 1m soil layer as well as changes of groundwater storages had significant meaning in the evaluation of forest habitats retention. The research showed an increase of water storages in both analysed years, whereas in 2009/2010 hydrological year increase was higher than in the first analysed year (2000/2001) of about 160 mm.

Flood plain forests are the richest and highly picturesque forest ecosystems. Unfortunately, river regulation and flood control contribute to their degradation. In Poland only 0.2% of total area is covered by flood plain forests. The Uroczysko Warta forest district constitutes one of the most important clusters of these sites. The construction of the Jeziorsko reservoir in the middle course of the Warta River has contributed to changes in the river regime (reduced flooding areas and decreased flooding frequency). It seems that the use of simple land improvement systems, i.e. gates, river bars and culverts with flap check valves, may result in the recreation of advantageous hydrological conditions. In such a case storage volume of oxbow lakes would be increased and ground water would be maintained at a higher level over longer periods of time. This study presents a concept for protection of the Uroczysko Warta, thanks to the construction of appropriate engineering infrastructure.

Las Bielański covers 150 hectares, it is a unique remnant of the ancient Mazowiecka Forest. At present 130 hectares out of 150 hectares are a nature reserve, where the influence of humans is limited only to tourist paths. The aim of this research was to estimate a possible impact of use the path by humans on the development of nearby plants. Namely, whether the presence of the path induces any changes, and if so, what sort and scope of the changes is seen. A 125 m long section of a tourist path, located in an oak-hornbeam association was chosen. Three sampling lines parallel to the path were traced: line A – 15-30 cm distant from the path’s edge, line B – 5 m away, and line C – about 10 m away from the path’s edge (Fig. 1). Plants were collected using sample squares of 0.1 m2 in area, distributed evenly along each line (25 samples per line, i.e., 75 samples altogether). The data collected in the field were analyzed statistically. Most of the species exhibit a clumped distribution of the number of sprouts (Tab. 1). This phenomenon is seen in each line. In order to demonstrate the differences in the abundance of sprouts, as well as differences in plant cover between the samples taken along the three lines, nonparametric statistics were applied – the Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. The results of those analyses show for restricted plant cover in the line closest to the path: the percentage of the coverage and the number of sprouts per sample in line A are lower than those estimated for lines B and C (Fig. 3). The species occurring most frequently are those typical of the oak-hornbeam association. The estimate of frequency is the lowest for all the species directly in the closest vicinity of the path (Fig. 2). Seasonal variability is evident, too. No presence of animals was noticed within the distance of 5 m from the path’s edge. The majority of animal traces occurred around line C, about 10 m distance from the path. Particular attention was paid to the distribution of hornbeams (Carpinus betulus) – the species in the oak-hornbeam association. No significant differences were found between the three lines as far as the number of hornbeam sprouts and frequency is concerned (Fig. 4 and 5). The number of sprouts of this species is the highest in spring, and it decreases gradually, due to heavy mortality of seedlings and juvenile specimens, with the progressive light shortage. It means the tourist traffic is not the only factor affecting plant abundance.

Clear−cutting impacts site conditions seriously. However, in nutrient−poor sites the effects of stand removal can be minor than in nutrient−rich sites. The aim of this work was to assess whether the clear−cut can improve species diversity of ground Cladonia species, which decline has been observed in forest communities. In stands of different age classes (≤10, 11−20, 21−40, 41−60, 61−80, ≥81 years) in the Przymuszewo Forest District (northern Poland) ground Cladonia species and their cover were recorded on research plots (10×15 m). A total of 24 species were identified in the study area. There were more Cladonia species and they were more abundant in young stands (<20 years old) than in stands older than 60 years. Nine species are significantly more frequent and demonstrated high fidelity in young stands and only one was characteristic for old stands. Composition of Cladonia species depended primarily on stand age and subsequently on canopy or bryophyte cover. In nutrient−poor sites clear−cutting is favourable for Cladonia species diversity.

Opis:
The aim of the research described in this paper is to classify groundwater level patterns in pine stands of forest fresh sites. The approach has been employed with the view to facilitate explaining interactions between physiographic characteristics and groundwater dynamics in prospective research. The methods which have been employed so far for explanation of groundwater level dynamics interactions with local physiographic conditions do not let to draw firm conclusions. The classification of groundwater dynamics patterns requires employing more sophisticated methods, because of a relatively extensive range of groundwater dynamics site-to-site variability expressed, e.g., by amplitude and cycle period. The methods of groundwater patterns classification proposed in the literature focused either on hydrogeological criteria or, if related to forest ecosystems, focused on water balance elements in forest habitats. The area selected for investigation represented typical features for the Northern European Lowland forests defined by soil and form of terrain pattern shaped by the last glacial period (Vistulian glaciation) and dominant share of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in stand species composition. The research period covered the 2002-2007 hydrological years. The measurement used in analysis covered 35 sites equipped with measurement wells.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono wstępne wyniki badań w małych zlewniach leśnych, na których przeprowadzono zabiegi regulacji stosunków wodnych poprzez podpiętrzanie odpływów melioracyjnych. Do badań oceny skutków przeprowadzenia zabiegów technicznych wytypowano trzy leśne zlewnie eksperymentalne położone na terenie Nadleśnictwa Spychowo, zróżnicowane pod względem warunków hydrologicznych (wielkość zasilania), fizjograficznych (rodzaj zlewni), glebowych, siedliskowych oraz rozwiązań technicznych i spodziewanego efektu zabiegów regulujących stosunki wodne (zróżnicowana wysokość spiętrzenia, zasięg oddziaływania, funkcja w danym siedlisku). Badania prowadzono od września 2010 r. do czerwca 2011 r. z wyłączeniem okresu zimowego. W ramach badań zostały określone właściwości fizyczne i fizykochemiczne wód gruntowych, a także zmiany stężeń wybranych składników tych wód. Ustalenie hydrogeologicznych i hydrologicznych efektów spiętrzenia wody odbyło się na podstawie cyklicznej kontroli położenia poziomu wód gruntowych w zasięgu oddziaływania piętrzeń. W pobranych próbkach wód gruntowych co miesiąc oznaczono stężenia azotu azotanowego(V), azotu azotanowego(III), azotu amonowego, ChZT, magnezu, chlorków, siarczanów, węglanów, suchej pozostałości i substancji popielnych. Stężenia większości analizowanych składników w wodach gruntowych uległy obniżeniu po wybudowaniu piętrzeń. Jedynie koncentracje mineralnych form azotu wykazały odwrotną tendencję we wszystkich obiektach.
Recent years have witnessed increased awareness of the negative impacts of land drainage, which has spurred an interest in small-scale retention programs in small catchment basins in Poland. Actions taken as part of such programs at different administrative levels are aimed at improving the retention capacity of forest habitats. The effects of human-induced regulations of water conditions in small afforested catchments were studied in three experimental catchments located in the Forest Division of Spychowo, differing with respect to hydrological (water supply), physiographic (catchment type), soil and habitat conditions, as well as the applied technological solutions and their implications for water relations (damming level, range of impact, functions performed in a given habitat). The study was conducted from September 2010 to June 2011, excluding the winter season. The physical properties of soil and the ground’s retention capacity in the area affected by the damming projects were determined. The hydrogeological and hydrological effects of water damming and quantitative changes in water resources were estimated based on groundwater level monitoring in the affected area. The ground water parameters were determined according to the commonly accepted methods. The samples were tested for the following ingredients: nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, magnesium, sulphates, carbonates, chlorides, COD, dry residue, ash substances. Concentrations of most of the analyzed elements in groundwater were reduced after the construction of damming. Only the concentrations of mineral nitrogen showed the opposite trend at all sites.

Opis:
Studies on the soils in forest ecosystems in breaks of the rivers Jeleń and Sopot were carried out in the years 1997-1998. Although the rivers differ in length, catchment area, amount of water carried and breadth of the valleys, the most important factors affecting soil formation and their spatial differentiation are similar: bedrock, relief, water drainage, natural type of water management, position of the ground water-table relative to the river water level, and chemistry of spring and soil waters. Steep slopes of the valleys covered with poor and highly acidic podzolic soils are usually overgrown with fir and pine phytocenoses, or rarely, with mixed oak-pine forests. The bottoms are often characterised by longitudinal duality of the flood-plain benches. In the drier area close to the river beds under ash-alder forests, there are more fertile gley soils and gley podzols. Poorer and more acidic localities are occupied by mixed forests with spruce. In permanently moist fragments of the benches at the foot of the slopes and in depressions with stagnant water weakly acidic peat-mud and peat soils occur overgrown with bog-alder forests. Peculiarities of these areas are low peat-bogs suspended even up to 4-6 m above the water-table of the river.

Mid−forest ponds play a crucial role in shaping water management in micro−catchments by storing and sup−plying ground water in adjacent forest habitats. Supply of the ground water in adjacent areas by water from the ponds is particularly important during the summer half−year when forests are at full vegetation and periods of rainfall deficiency may occur.
